I thought I would be able to find this, but the last hour of searching hasn't produced what I'm specifically looking for. Forgive me if I simply looked in the wrong place.
I'm in the US. The AT&T factory ROM comes with the HTC Home that you can drop on your today screen. One of the options launches you straight into the text message author screen.
I have already re-mapped the retarded PTT to launch Google Maps, which was cake, but try as I may, I can't remap the mail button (or any button) to author a text message.
I wouldn't mind making this a cube function if I can't make it a button function. I'm trying to save "today" space.
Thank you kindly for any time you can give me!
For me I put Google Maps on the apps screen, installed HTC Action screen and mapped that to the PTT button. I figure what do I do more, use google maps or compose text messages...Works like a champ and 2 quick button pushes and im writing a text.
I was hoping the outlook mail client executable would take some sort of an arguement to launch the compose text screen. I could then map that link to a button.
I didn't know about HTC Action. I'll give this a shot.
Thank you kindly for your time!

I know that this was addressed before, but after searching LITERALLY for about 30 minutes I cant find the registry edit needed to make the email tab in HTC Home default to Outlook (and not whatever the last previously used messaging program was). Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
bump, someone please reply
bumping..........
I recall this being discussed quite a bit in the Hermes forum, and my conclusion was that the email icon has a mind of it's own and is not controllable by any reg settings or xml file. On my Hermes, it would always open the last one I used, but on the Tilt (with a later build of HTC Home) I always get the 'select an account' screen.
no matter, use the hard button for messaging. easier to hit without the stylus anyway. just keep hitting the button to cycle through your messaging accounts.
while looking for something else, i stumbled on this tidbit...
When I press the Email button on the "Home" tab, it takes me to my MMS/SMS messages. How can I fix this?
This is a known issue with the HTC Home Plugin. The workaround is to create a POP account on your device, then press the Email button again. It should now take you to your email messages. You can then remove the POP account if unneeded.

1) It should point to the last one you have used. Or view the list of email accounts and the one with the * beside it will be the one that loads up when you click the email icon on home screen. Also make sure you have unchecked the option taht says somethign about showing a list of email accounts.
2) what?
3) What buttons, the actionscreen ones? You will have to use the search function or google it, the answer is around here somewhere. Have to do some reg key editing (not hard). Search for "changing htcactionscreen links" or something. I am to lazy to find it for you.
umm u confused me...
I got the HTC Home plugin, the one with the big digital clock.. When I hit email button it goes to Email Sample... I want it to go to my Outlook/Exchange email
to #2, the HTC Cube, the rotating application, I want to add the HTCActionScreen program as one of those slides
and again, in HTCActionScreen, email goes to Email sample, not my Outlook Exchange account
Can you help me with a shortcut?
At the moment, to send a text message I currently go messaging, SMS/MMS, menu, new , SMS, which seems very longwinded!
Surely there's a quicker way?
Do you have something against installing the HTC home plugin?
Ya know wit da big clock, my main man.
Sorry my friend, I'm new to all this. What's HTC home plugin?
you can install HTC Action Screen (you can find it here on xda) and then asign it to some hardware key.
check this out. It has a nice little spot on the main screen that shows when you have email waiting, or sms/mms waiting or even a missed call. I love it.

HTC Action screen is my vote - handy for everything 'new' you want to do....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340803
What I have done is put the attached "Newsms" into windows folder, go to settings then buttons and assign a hardware key to this attachement so "1 click" and you can type a new sms. Thats if you want to assign a heardware key.
Thanks all. I've assigned a button somehow!
I was wondering if someone could help out here. I finally put HTC home on my Tilt and love it, but... I do a lot of SMS messaging, and I cant seem to find a shortcut/optioon from the home screen straight to composing a new SMS like there is in the At&T HTC plugin. Its a pain in the ass to have to go to messaging, then select new, sms.
Thanks...
there are apps that enable this kind of things.
i would recommend "HTC action screen". it has lots of "new" options (sms, task, appointment,...). you can find cab for this here on forums. after you install this you should assign this app to some hardware button for quick and easy access.
Thanks man. I was kinda hoping to find a way to map it to the PTT button or one of the HTC home tabs...I really didnt want to run an app just to do that but I will give it a look.
Thanks again!
There are plenty of programs that let you change soft key settings, search around. Also a bunch of threads that explain how to set up a shortcut to the new SMS screen, which you can then set to a soft key.
HTC Action Screen is just simple app which pops up dialog with "new" options. if you don't select anything it will auto close in few seconds.
another thing is that if you send messages to people in your contact list, it is much easier to use some contact manager to do that than "new sms" option. i use Finger Friendly Friends, but this is not free. with FFF i'm able to find desired contact and make some action (send mail, sms, mms, call home, mobile...) in few seconds without using stylus.
but if you really need only "new sms" option, kmorris89 is right, just remap one of softkeys to do that. you will find info on softkey remaping here on xda.
When I'm compiling emails on my TyTN II, I find that often my email will be unintentionally sent when I'm only part way through due to a keyboard combination being used. Section 7.7 of the TyTN II user manual (page 134) refers to keyboard shortcuts and mentions holding down the S key is a shortcut to send the message but as in this (much) earlier thread I found relating to Accidentally pressing keyboard shortcut to send SMS, it refers to SMS sending and I'm having the issue with email. Is this pressing the softkey still the cause (I'm pretty sure it seems more like pressing a combination of keys around the S that are doing it in my case). More importantly, has anyone found a Cab, fix or even a WWE HTC ROM to stop this happening?
It's very annoying and I would have though some solution must have been found by now. I'll mention it in a letter to HTC but based on their past 'performance', I don't hold out much hope of a quick (or even eventual) fix from them. I'm therefore hoping for a solution from forum members so please let me know.
For me, its happened when i accidentally hit the send soft key between the R and T. I know its pretty bad sending half an uneditted email to a client and then having to send another email explaining why it happened and carrying on from there.. very unproffesional.
My solution to this problem is to simply cut and past the recipients email address from the to field to the subject field. Then once i'm done editing and everythings squared off and ready to go, i'll just cut and paste from the subject field back into the to field.
hope this little work around helps you. As for a hotfix or a confirmation message before sending it, i haven't heard of one.
I press that goddamn softkey all the time.....
It is really embarassing when you send a message half complete!
Good tip about the subject line
AEBPlus
I use AE Button Plus and have set the soft keys to ignore a single press. If I need to access the single-press application, then I just need to press on the screen.

Thanks for that work-around, that'll certainly do the trick if I remember to blank the 'to' field before creating the email. I've also emailed the AE Button Plus email address to see if they are willing to make a version of the product that works just with the TyTN IIs email and SMS program when thats in operation. I've also unticked the 'send messages immediately' box in my Windows Live Options on the TyTN II (since I use my Hotmail account through this device). I've found that this puts my email into the drafts folder and it's only when I then send the draft that it actually leaves - it's a bit of a pain though given keyboard short cuts are supposed to help rather than hinder.Definitely one for HTC and Microsoft to address.
