I'm looking into getting the Tilt but I was wondering if the GPS is a-GPS or true standalone GPS. I have a Sprint Touch (Vogue) and I know the Mogul is the same way and its a-GPS and requires an internet connection to get the initial fix.
If I got the Tilt, I'm not sure if I would get the internet on the plan or not since most places I go would have WiFi access anyway.
This might be a deciding factor for me.
Thanks!
Well, the tilt already has a gps antenna in it. Thus you can install your favorite gps software. The initial fix can be faster with an internet connection, but not required. (Such as a handy tool called QUICKGPS, allows you to downloading the latest satellite data for a faster initial fix. Can be done via wifi, and is valid for about a week) It takes about 20 seconds to 1 minute for me to get a fix.
I too only use wifi and its more than enough!

Thanks for the reply! I can easily download the data with WiFi and that should be enough for me.
Can you disable the internet connection so I don't accidently use it? Like a way to force it to use WiFi for internet instead of EDGE/3G?
Yeah you just have to make sure GPRS is not configured. There is also a few programs around like NODATA that turns it completely off, so you dont have to worry about it.
The easiest way I have found to stay out of an internet connection is:: Start/settings//connections/connections/manage existing connections: Tap and hold over connection for option to delete internet connection.
anytime something tries to connect it will prompt you to connect first. Also most cooks have connection setup wizard that runs when you first install ROM. You can safely cancel it with no problems. It is only for data connections.
Also you might want to make sure that MMS tests is off as well. I know I have friends who just had to send me pictures and could not figure I paid for it.
Most ROMs if you go into messaging then into sms\mms account to show you your inbox the menu has MMS options with a few check boxes. If you uncheck save sent messages it will prompt you for what messages you want or you can reject all messages. You will not be prompted it will just reject them automatically

Can I still get MMS over WiFi, or will I have to get people to send it to my AT&T email address?

I don't believe that you can get MMS through WiFi.
Actually, the Mogul has a stand alone GPS chip in it as well... We have both a Tilt and Mogul here.,... no data plan on either.. and both GPS's are functioning using TomTom

Try creating a connection setting with no APN set.
Or simply use Modaco NoData... Google it, it's free!
It's basically a toggle to activate/deactivate data connections.
I use it to avoid roaming data costs!
wow, just what i needed, thank you!!
No problem, glad I could help!
you can tell your service provider and tell them to stop ANY data connection, ATT does that, now even if I use PIE to open google ( without activating wifi) or start fring, it shows there is no data connection available.
Also if ur using fring, u can set the rule for it to connect only through wifi.

Im not sure if tmobile will do that, as all everyone wants it money. Anyways, yes as i stated in the first post, i had set it to "wifi only" yet the phone still connected through data if the wifi connection failed.
But problem is solved.
thanks for the info just what i needed
I am trying to setup my Diamond so 3G only connects when I want it to. I've added the 3G button to the comm manager. Even with this set to off it reconnects when the web browser is opened.
I also have the advanced config manager installed with the Auto GRPS set to disabled but still the 3G connects automatically.
Does anyone have the same problem and/or know a fix?
It will connect whenever anything requests data, as far as I know, there's no way to stop this.
Thought there may be a hidden setting maybe in the registry that could stop this. It is annoying that the comm manager says 3G is off yet there is data connection after loading up the browser. And I'm sure it just connects even without actively requesting a data connection through the browser.
What happens when you set both options in Connections to use "My Work Network" and set your WLAN as your Work Network?
use no data
then this way you don't start it unless you want it to
hope this helps

Use no data? Am I missing something or is this as simple as it sounds!? Are you suggesting that by not using programs requiring data then I will not activate the 3G connection?
It certainly is a shame that upon activating a program requiring a data connection that you cannot select the source of this data ie. 3G, wifi etc or just cancel the request entirely.
if you want it to use wifi, simply connect to wifi before you launch the application. Windows Mobile is very different from Symbian in that way (Symbian will ask for each app).
Hi,
I have a problem with the GPRS and Wireless connection. I am using Windows Live mail and and set it up so it is manually synchronized! Same with other mail accounts.
But, every time I connect to the internet using wireless and then press Send/Recieve, it keeps opening GPRS and use it to retrieve new e-mails and ignores my wireless connection!!! Which is really annoying.
How do I fix that?
I have exactly the same... but then with internet sharing with my laptop... keeps using my gprs/3g instead off the wifi that is 100 times faster.
annoying
and it is really annoying as you said, it is much faster with wifi and for people like me where I do not have monthly GPRS data included, it's really annoying and costs a lot.
Earlier, I had my e-mail to automatically download new emails daily and suddenly, I got a huge phone bill because of that problem!! So, e-mails are downloaded manually now until I fix the problem!!

Newer Windows Live always tries to connect using your default Internet Connection even when you are already online. To solve this, you need to go to:
Start->Settings->Connections->Advanced->Select Networks. Change everything to My Work Network.
With this, Windows Live won't try to connect when you have active internet connection. The problem now is, if you have no active internet connection, it will force your device to connect to your gprs/3g but will fail to work. You will need to reset the setting above to your gprs/3g connection.
yes but
Yes but chaning preferences for my network would result in not having my mms working, or gprs when I need it?
However, I have to go back to settings and change everything again to get things to work!!!! I would rather have a solution than a workaround
not working

Have you tried NoDATA with HTC Diamond with WM6.1?? NoData seems to be an old cab file for older versions of WM?
ok first of all i did google this but didn't find anything specific
alright so under my "connections setting i have my "select automatic network" to MY ISP.....i thought that was enough to avoid data charges (since i only want to use wifi for internet browsing and emails...and i dont have a data plan).
So i was playing around with the email options and under the "server" settings i noticed the connection was set to Medianet....my heart came in my mouth since i've been going crazy with the e-mails thinking im connected to wifi I changed the connection to MY ISP and now i cant receive e-mails.....so right now im hoping i didn't get charged (somehow) or if i did.....what would be some good bs excuses to get it waived
so my query is..can i send/receive emails via wifi connection? If so, how do i set that up.....
Before i use to turn off "phone" and leave wifi on and i did receive emails with that setup.
so my 2nd qs is....does disabling phone disable medianet or mms capabilities ?
Disabling all Data services from isp
I'm right there with you. I do not want to get a data plan, as I only need internet every once and a while. I have enabled my wi-fi by doing this on my phone:
Start>Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi
then from there you can turn it on, find and join networks...
As to removing all access to your ISP, I am not sure. I keep trying but no matter what i do, every once and a while I notice the little "E" logo at the top symbolizing the EDGE network is being accessed. Which is not what I want. Anyone who can shed some light on disabling the data service from being accessed, it would be greatly appreciated.
hmm well I also do not use the 3G network. The best way I've found to do this is by using the Comm manager and going to the communications manager and disabling 3G and disabling Data Connection. Then if you keep wi-fi enabled it won't ever use the 3G network. If the ROM your using doesn't have a good comm manager then you can download one that has those controls because there are many on this website. Hope this helps,
-John
Modaco No Data is what I use
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
i have issues sending e-mails from the built in client, it always tells me i dont have access or some crap which makes no sense since i can sign into my account and check my e-mail from my phone so i normally have to go to the website for my e-mail to send an e-mail which is a pain
I am an amatuer with xda, as well as my pocket pc (I have the htc fuze{touch pro for att}), however I enjoy both and am learning more and more all the time about both. However I have not been able to find this, and was wondering if such a thing existed: a program to toggle between wi-fi and internet for other programs. You see, I don't have a data package, and don't like to pay for the internet. So I was just wondering if anyone knew of a toggle for something like that.
I'm in the same boat. I use this, and have it mapped to the PTT button. Works great.
I cliked the icon and it turned on my wifi. Is that all it does?

Not really, don't get me wrong, I will use that app on my ptt button too because it is very useful, but I was looking for an app to change other programs kind of. It seems like other functions on the phone, such as downloading a MMS, or updating your email inbox require the internet. I didin't know if stuff like tat could be changed to wi-fi instead of the data connection
Well the best solution I know of would be to use Modaco's NoData (attached) which will disable any kind of data connection. Another thing I personally do is to go into the "Phone" settings and then "Bands" and select "GSM" for the top box and "Auto" for the bottom box. Basically that turns off 3G.
If you are connected via Wifi the Wifi connection will take priority over any other connection. So whenever I want to check my email for instance, I push the PTT button to turn on Wifi and then send/recieve and no data is used.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, that does, thanks a lot!
My experience with nodata have not been all that good. Since the wifi reciver is pretty weak I find that if I fall out of wifi cover the phone will connect with 3g even if I'm running nodata.
If anyone know about a program that both activates wifi AND deactivate all other means of internett connections that would be great. I'd rather surf for free on a wifi connection that have a low signal than to pay for surfing with 3g.
I'am also searching for such a solution. I use Exchange server sync for my contacts and appointments. This sync should not go over the Mobile Internet connection, i need it only in our intranet by using WLAN/WiFi
Regardless if WIfi is enabled or not: The Touch Pro tries to connect by Mobile Internet to the Intranet-Server(!), this fails, of course. When i disable the Mobile data connection on the connections settings tab, anything is fine.
In the advanced settings of the exchange server config, i found a drop down box for the connection. But all it shows is "Internet" meaning the mobile connection. The office/business connection (=intranet config) is not available there...
