Trying to learn How to flash my TyTN II. - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

So this is my first post on this forum and I hope im posting in the correct place, but as stated in the title I am trying to learn how to flash my TyTN II.
I have been surfing around for several hours and have found and downloaded many things, however most of the stuff I read seems Greek to me. I know flashing can be dangerous so I wanted to make sure I have this completely right before I do anything.
I have already DL:
[Apr 29] Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid v2 5.2.19716/5.2.19700
XDAtools
Hard-SPL-V7.zip
I have a verey general idea about what to do but not enough to feel ready to fool around. If anyone can write me or point me in the direction of a beginers guide to phone flashing I would be very grateful. Also I need to backup my current ROM and I dont understand the prog in XDAtools, so any insight or explination would be very, very helpfull.
Thanks

check the wiki for the flashing guide..you should get everything you need there...

Hi & Welcome,
I'm not sure how you ended up with XDATools (I don't have it) or what Hard SPL you have (it's not the Kaiser any of the ones for sure), but anyway...
The beginners flashing guide is here:http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
A list of usefull reading is in the Getting Started link in my signature.
Edit: Damn too slow

advice to a newbie..

Hello there...
I ordered my herald...actually a p4350 and i will be receiving it in a few days..
But as i know it will come with WM5 installed.
So,
i am trying to understand the procedures explained here but..
Theres some modified roms as i see.
So what should be the path to follow...
Upgrading to WM6 from htc's webpage ? or is there any modified wm6 images around?
And what is rom called for? A kind of theme that should be installed after upgrading?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance..
The best advice each one of us could give you is to start reading the posts your interested in. Make sure you have read enough to know what you are going to do and what to do when it goes wrong.
If your Herald comes packed with WM5 and you simply want to upgrade it to WM6, the best way to do this is by downlaoding the official RUU (Rom Upgrading Utility) for the HTC website (europe.htc.com).
If you're familiar with WM6 and you want to use a customized package then start reading the posts on how to upgrade, the (im)possibilities and it's pro's and cons. Start with reading the topics by ITje on how to upgrade to his rom. The latest version is Touch-IT V3 for Herald/P4350.
Make sure you have the official RUU before you start upgrading to the customized ROM, because you need that one incase you brick your Herald (means something went wrong during upgrade and it isn't working anymore).
All the answers to any question you might have can be found in these forum's. To make sure you don't piss of people or ask redundant question search the forum until you're desperate before you ask something.
Good luck!

Which ROM can I upgrade to?

I am a newbie and browsed this site for a ROM upgrade for my Tilt. I have seen quite a few ROM's made by members, some with Radio, some AT&T, some from Dutty and trying to work out which if any will work on my UK Tytn II.
Could someone please list what the ROM's are and what they will work on? and what is the deal with Radio? I read that a hardware upgrade is required to activate radio, is this the case?
I have CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2), bought about a month ago
Please help!
i'm very new with this to and i would also like to know the answer to the same question. i've read quite a few threads but i just don't get it so all the help is welkom.
Read the sticky posts in the "Kaiser Upgrading" forum. There's enough info there to get you started. There's also a sticky regarding the different ROMs available. To make sure you don't do anything that will cause your device not to work make sure you HardSPL your device first. Again, read the posts to do this. Everyone here has been in the same position you guys were at one point and they just read, read, read... the more info you know, the better you understand how everything works.
Good luck!

some noob questions

I would really appreciate it if someone could answer a few of these questions. I tried searching, but I couldnt find them.
Why is there a seperate hearald mobile 6 thread? Is there a difference? And how do you get windows mobile 6.1? I couldn't find a download for that.
Also, is installing something like touch IT just a faster way to install a bunch of different cabs? I'm asking because I wanted to know if I could just download the cabs I wanted and not have to download a whole pack. And what is hard-spl? I've seen the forum for it but it gives no clue on what it really is.
Herald mobile 6 is for discussions regarding windows mobile 6 on herald (herald is default wm5, while wing is wm6), whereas rom development is for discussion in regards to roms.
To get wm6.1, install a wm6.1 rom (read the stickies for instructions on installing roms).
While custom roms do include fixes that can be installed via cabs, they are also built on new bases that are faster or more stable than the present ones. These cannot be installed via cab.
Hard-SPL is a way of getting around the CID lock on the phone that prevents it from being flashed with custom roms. It is more or less permanent.
This is your free noob question. Welcome to the forums
thanks so much for your reply
i'm sorry, but there are still a few more things I wanted to ask, if you don't mind.
I understand hard-spl, but what is soft-spl? and what is a radio? also, is there a reason for choosing one rom over the other, other than personal preference? and whats an ipl?
If these are really obvious questions, please point me to a thread I could read up on. I've modded razrs and iphones, but I haven't done anything as complicated as a wm device.

I explain the differences between HardSPL and USPL in this thread.
A radio is... how do i explain this... the GSM software on the device? Put it this way, the newer the Radio, the better reception and phone quality you will get, usualy.
When it comes down to choosing between ROMs, its all personal preference, I strongly recommend trying the Open Touch V4.0 Biggy.
Please search and read, all of your answer can be found that way. Just like we all did.
thanks so much everyone, hopefully when i get on track I can help out newer noobs

Cooking Roms, Need your kindly help

Hello all.
Since English is not my native language and I'm some sort of new and not familiar here, I may need your help.
Bought X1 last week, after trying some nice guys' rom in xda, I'm wondering if I could able to cook my own rom, I mean to customize my system. I was wondering if I could ripped those things come along with offcial rom but not need, and those things I needed but some really good guys' roms don't have.
So, I am thinking of cooking a rom for what I need, can modify system file it self, such like, rip out "Block Recognizer" and replace it with "PlumSIP" (A really nice Chinese input method), just for example.
And in 2003Se I know some external softwares can be customize installed by extrom, I found out WM6.1 seemed used a special way, like build into a single image file...
Well, generally speaking, I am hoping someone could help me, to show me some tutorial to read and do myself.
Thanks a lot.
PS:Have downloaded kitchen pack, but don't know what all of those soft. would do... For now, I just know how to decomplie an offcial rom in to nb files..
I would also like some info on cooking. I have searched and read a lot on this site but I'm no closer to getting anywhere. I tried to follow the instructions to backup my ROM as they are very easy to follow, but it didnt work.
Does anyone cook with Vista?
What kitchen programs are out there?
Do you have to have a specific kitchen program for each model of phone?
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448809&highlight=kitchens but its outdated

X1 got its kitchen app pak, check this:
ftp://x1:[email protected]/XperiaX1/TOOLs/KovskyKitchen.zip
for now I am trying to figue out each module's really would do....
Try jerpleas kitchen in the sticky at the top to start out with. It'll give you the basic kitchen with which you can build a working rom (and simple customization)
Then search for ervius multilang gui for bepes tools (i've linked to it a few times now in this forum).
That's the best I've seen so far, you can dump a stock rom using it and start adding from there.
Cheers dude, i appreciate that :thumbs up:

that may help, thanks. but i'm still looking for tutorials for how to modify dumped rom files to fulfill my own needed.
The only advice i can give is to search search search... There was a large area of trial and error when i cooked my first rom. Some tutorials worked some didn't and its like a combo of everything that will get u going.
IMHO; ervius has the better kitchen, but not for beginners
I agree with Fards: your best bet is to start with the sticky posted one and get used to the basic cooking process on a first place
i think so too. use sticky.
to get feeling for cooking its not needed to read the "X1-TUTORIAL".
check tutorials for diamond, ralphi, hermes and kaiser ... than you will get some aha-effects and you will see some identical rules for syntax and how-tos for cooking with this sticky kitchen.
normaly its not realy possible to make a tutorial for every pda-type cause ...
i dont know why but its o.k., if i look to me i see me dont like reading but more not writing anything ...

good idea, you've pointed me a way.
but i wonder if that is something different from x1 to those diamond, kaiser, raphel blah blah blah...
if you need more petrol for starting i can say only "begin now".
its not realy the same but its realy realy realy near the same.

A beginners question...

Good morning Gents,
I have had a Touch HD for a while now and used your site for all sorts of info but there is something i am struggling with and after searches on here and google and other places i can't seem to find an answer.
I wanted to flash my device using one of the ROM's posted on here but i have noticed that most are now stating they user 6.5 rather than 6.1.
Now my question is, can i flash a 6.5 ROM onto my device or do i need to upgrade the operating system to 6.5 first?
If that's the case, where can you get 6.5 from as it doesn't seem to be released yet?! I have read the No Warez point in the posting rules so don't get yourself in trouble if it's done using slightly dodgy sites, i can do that legwork myself.
Thanks for your help with this cos it's driving me nuts!
The ROMS include the software.
All you have to do is make sure your spl is correct.
Best thing to do is follow crackwhores guide, here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377
And you shouldn't go wrong

WM6.5 is not official released yet. All wm6.5 roms on this forum are using leaked builds.
To flash wm6.5 onto your device read and follow this guide. All future flashing related queries should be directed to that thread.
