AT&T Fuze HERE WE COME!

It's not quite free if you need to take a two year contract (with a data plan), is it?
I'd hate to be tied to a phone for that long

Good deal if you want the two year contract.
I got mine for $150 refurb w/ Premier 9 months ago though.

I'm not a big fan of contracts
I like prepaid or month by month billing better, but the phone is more expensive :S

"available on new service activations only"
That's from the email I got, the fine print That really chaps my hide, why can't I, as a current Premier customer, get that price as an upgrade? Places like Best Buy do it too, upgrades are more than new activations, so basically they're saying you're more important to them as a new customer than as a longtime existing one.

That's why you just cancel out your service and get new service to take advantage of the best deals (way better deals out there then anything AT&T offers). It really makes no sense to me. Only thing is, that on family plan, you'd have to make sure your contracts expire at the same time.

Buying a tilt from newegg?

Hey, i am planning on buying a tilt from newegg for 149.99 with 2 year activation. I am wondering if anyone here has done that yet, and if i need to make a whole new att account or if i can just add another 2 years to my old one that has already expired. Thanks much!
you need a whole new individual account with a new number.

This is not true, you do not need a whole new individual account or need to sign up with a new number. If your contract is expired (as mine was) you can purchase this as an upgrade. At the end of the purchase process there is a field for number portability. You leave the box for "carrier" default, put your current number in the "number portability field", and enter your account number with the word "upgrade" at the end. This information was told to me by newegg's AT&T rep. I just purchased my phone from newegg tonight and successfully upgraded my account to a new 2 year plan all while keeping my current number and getting the $150 price.
rate plans and options from newegg
i bought the 8525 about 6 months ago from them. under there deal for 6 months. my contract with them is about up and i was going to cancel cingular (i know about the fee) and put a new account to buy the new phone.
i was originally going to pay the full price at the att store until one of the people there told me they couldnt sell it to me unless i got a pda plan. (there loss)
now, are there any special requirements from buying from newegg? are they going to require me to buy this data plan as well? currently im on the media net plan, and thats because of the cheaper price, and the fact that i dont use that much internet. is new egg or att going to "force" me to get that pda plan? and as far as newegg goes, when i bought the 8525, i was able to get the cheapest rate plan, nation 450. will i still be able to do this when getting the tilt?

There are no "special" requirements for buying from newegg. The only requirements are that you sign up for a 2 year plan (either as a new customer or as an upgrade) and get any of the voice plans. All the voice plans that are available on AT&T's website are also available through newegg. They also have numerous additional data/text/media packages that slightly differ from what AT&T has on their website, but its generally the same. The only problem I had is that they do not have the Unlimited PDA data connect plan when signing up through newegg. I called AT&T and they said when I activate the phone I can upgrade my plan to the PDA connect without losing the newegg discount. (As part of the contract thru newegg, if you change any part of your plan, voice or add ons, to a lower cost plan within 181 days you lose the discount and have to pay back newegg $250. After 181 you are free to change your plan.)
Also, whoever at AT&T told you that you *must* get a data plan with the 8925 is full of sh*t. You are not required to buy a data plan with any phone besides the iphone. I would have asked to speak to their superior or called AT&T corporate on the spot to clarify.
You must have a plan when the rebate goes through. Dunno if ATT still has one but that was my experience buying it the Friday it came out.
That is a really good deal. Does anyone think AT&T would match that price if I go into the store? I guess if they cant I could always return it and go with New Egg.
Terms And Conditions
* If you purchase a new wireless communication service plan from AT&T (which is not a substitute for an existing service plan you have with AT&T) through Newegg.com, and purchase a new wireless communication device, such as a cell phone, from Newegg.com, as part of the same order, the price for the device will include a discount of $250.00 (the "Equipment Discount"). YOU MUST REIMBURSE NEWEGG.COM THE AMOUNT OF THE EQUIPMENT DISCOUNT, IF YOU DO NOT MAINTAIN THE WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SERVICE PLAN PURCHASED AS PART OF THE ORDER IN GOOD STANDING FOR A MINIMUM OF 181 DAYS AFTER ACTIVATION. The wireless communication service plan will be considered "not to be in good standing" if:
You fail to pay the balance due by the payment due date in any month.
You cancel the service.
You change the service plan to a different service plan with a lower monthly service rate.
You transfer the equipment to another service plan.
You transfer any phone number associated with the service plan to another service plan.
You use the service plan purchased as part of the same order to replace an existing service plan you have with the same company.
You authorize Newegg.com to initiate a charge to the credit card or other payment method you used to purchase the Equipment in the amount of $250.00, the Equipment Discount, if it is due.

Do you mean just a voice plan? When I ordered mine on friday I do not think you were required to have a data plan added on, only a voice is required IIRC. I got a data plan anyways so it didn't make much of a difference to me.
I think the part that is screwing most people up in the terms that slcui56 posted is this part:
"* If you purchase a new wireless communication service plan from AT&T (which is not a substitute for an existing service plan you have with AT&T) through Newegg.com, and purchase a new wireless communication device, such as a cell phone, from Newegg.com, as part of the same order, the price for the device will include a discount of $250.00 (the "Equipment Discount")."
You can not substitute for an existing plan if you are still under contract. I had a plan with AT&T but my contract was up, so this replaced my existing plan. I think newegg/AT&T could have worded this better.

So if I'm interpreting this correctly it looks like this offer is not eligible for a upgrade and only for new customers.

Yes, I did read the whole thread and you dont need to be rude about it. I do realize that you spoke to their AT&T rep but it seems to contradict their own terms and conditions that you need to agree to when you purchase the phone on their website. To me it seems that they could potentially charge you $250 when you do it as an upgrade. Did you ask the rep about this when you spoke to them?
I notice one can select Media Max off the newegg deal, is Media Max ($19.99) enough for the Tilt? IOW, could I use the IE on the tilt with MediaMax or is MediaMax intended for WAP access.

At New york in Manhattan (Times square and 42nd Street)
they said it's required... I argued with the employee (after asking nicely.. then he replied being stupid...saying that the cellphone wouldnt work without the pda plan)
then I spoke to one of the superiors to be told the same.
I headed to best buy in 43rd street and 5th avenue, at the best buy mobile section they have it without requiring a pda plan or any internet plan at $250 cash/credit whatever
without ever sending rebates forms or anything like that.
I could have gotten through new egg or cheaper but i dont have the patience to wait for it to arrive.
I wanted it at that moment so thats why i got it at best buy mobile thing.
wut if i purchase a tilt off new egg with the 59.99 plan then i down the plan once i get the device... wouldi have to pay regular price cause i didnt stick wit the plan?
*edit*
forget it that answers itself on the newegg site

I should be more clear. I specifically asked the AT&T rep if this could be used as an upgrade and if I would still get the discount. They said yes, and gave me the directions for using this as an upgrades as I explained above. I'm not sure why people are doubting this as I myself purchased it as an upgrade. The receipt is sitting right next to me. I did not mean to come off as rude.

I originally ordered a Tilt from Wirefly on the 13th for $99.00 ($100.00 data plan rebate). Even though their website and sale staff said it was in stock up until Thursday, the phone is back ordered. Since none of the sales or support staff can tell me when or if they will be getting new Tilts, I canceled my purchase.
I spoke with Newegg this morning and was told they had 74 of the Tilts in stock (as of 7:15am PST). I promptly placed my order and was assured that one of the phones in stock will have my name on it!
I think $50.00 more is a bargain to no longer have to deal with Wirefly!
As for my terms, I am Verizon transfer. I was told (by Newegg) that all I had to do was sign up for a new service with a voice plan. There was no minimum voice plan purchase.
I did ask the Newegg rep about people who wanted to upgrade their account and their rebate requirements. I was told that if someone has a current contract (for example: 450 min) and wanted to "upgrade" to a higher rate (for example: 900 min) while they are still under contract, the rebate would not apply and their credit card would be charged $250.00 after the phone was activated. The rep told me that if someones contract ended and they were to "re-new" their contract than the rebate would be valid.
I think people here are getting the terms "new" and "upgrade" confused with each other.
Anyways, I am looking forward to receiving the phone!

AT&T Salesperson Truths/Lies?

I went and talked to an AT&T salesperson at the local AT&T Corporate store. I told them I had a Premier account (which is true). I asked what price they could give me on a Tilt. He said:
1. The cost for Premier customers is $399, and it is manditory to get a 2 year upgrade.
2. I have to get a new SIM, I can't use my current one (which works in my Cingular 3125 just fine).
Are either of these things true? The Premier website seems to say I can get the $399 price without renewing my contract (on which I still have a year left). I don't see why I need a new SIM either.
Also, I have heard of people getting $299 from premier with no contract upgrade. If I were to bring a screenshot of the premier site with this price to the AT&T store, would they give me that price? What about Best Buy?
I have a premiere account and got the phone for $299. The website said $399. I didn't HAVE to renew, but since my initial two-year contract was up in a week, I'd have to anyways.
.:Christian:.
Your old simcard may work on this device, but you'd better get a new 3G sim. Not sure about the difference (I guess it allows you to connect to faster speed) and I also know it allows you to store more contact on your sim and more than 1 number for each contact (which is completely useless on a device like the kaiser btw).

Plus, you don't have to pay for a new SIM card. I went in with my 8525 and told them (AT&T) I had WM6 on it and wanted to make sure I was ready for 3G (which, ironically, wasn't enabled in the Minneapolis area until yesterday - AFTER I bought my Tilt). They gave me a nice, new 3G SIM for the low, low price of $0.
Its easy dont deal with salespeople, call the 1800 number speak directly with the cancellation department they have access to the best price. I simply tell them I am geting a better deal for a phone .....and if you cant give me a better deal I'm goign to cancel, dont worry you dont have to cancel, tell them you want to knwo when the last day of the billing is as cards .... i got the 8525 when it was new for 99.00 and the premier price was 299.00
get the new sim card it is 3g capable..so it is faster data speeds..yes premiere account is online for 399 dollars but if you just update your phone and data plan you get 100$ plus 25$ instant discount..I got it for 275 plus tax..my premier account says 399 as well..just update the plan and data plan and check out..let us know how it goes..u can buty it online from the option -add a line- option which is on the main account page..

hahahaha, NEVER, i repeat NEVER, ask for AT&T salespeople for advice on plans or requirements...I dont like to put down people for their jobs, but AT&T salespeople are straight sharks...I had my mom go in to get an 8525 yesterday, and she told me the salesperson told her that a data plan was REQUIRED with the purchase of an 8525...I mean these people are just out to rob you blind...do yourself a favor and look in the forums and talk to other ATT users (such as myself) if you need an honest opinion...anyways in regard to your question, the tilt is 399 online with premier if you are NOT due for an upgrade...if its been two years and you are due for an upgrade, go into a corporate store and let them know...because depending on your premier discount, you can get a REAL discount on the tilt without even needing to reup on your contract...I just got a tilt otd for $284 without renewing my contract because I'm a Premier client and I was due for an upgrade...hope this helps.
it's very simple, a sale person earns more commission, if the sell the phone for more money, this is the case in hong kong, could be the same for at&t.

Get a new SIM card but don't change your plan. I switched to the Tilt from the old 2125, and am able to still use the MediaMax plan I was on for $20 a month with no problem. Sure, I forfeited the $100 mail-in rebate by not signing up for a new data plan, but do the math - by not spending $40 a month for the PDA connect plan, I'll break even in 5 months and be ahead after that. As far as the SIM card, there shouldn't be a charge to get the 3G sim card swapped out.
y is it that i hear about that you dont have to get a data plan With the phone??isnt that the deal?
I am in the middle of a two year plan already (11 months in), so I don't want to extend again right now. I think I will try the cancelation department. Any advice about what story to give them to get a good deal from them? What is the number for cancelation?
I don't have a data plan, and I don't need one (I plan to use the PDA for schedule and GPS functionality), so rebates for new data plans don't help me.

I am not saying threatening/pretending to cancel will or won't work. However, I know that the phone reps are authorized to cancel your account and assess an ETF IF you threaten to cancel. I don't think it's something that is widely/normally done, but they do have the authority once you identify yourself and speak those magical words. Good luck with your call!

I got it for 60. hehe
I still use my blue sim card from my original ATT charter plan ($99 month unlimited) which dates back to at least 2002. I am able to connect to the 3G networks and HSPDA without the 3G sim card. Don't let the salespeople at ATT tell you that you cannot connect without upgrading your sim card, plan, etc. I've used the same ATT blue sim card with the same blue charter plan on a treo 600, treo 650, htc hermes and now the ATT Tilt. I've always been able to connect to the internet, etc. with the same blue sim card.
You must not be in california. They did a force switch out of all the old ATT sim cards here. There is no charge for switching out sim cards...You simply walk into a store tell them you need a new sim card and they program it for you and you walk out. simple as that. If you dont want the hassle then you can buy them on ebay for like $5 including shipping. then just call up att to activate it on your account.
I'm in Los Angeles, California. Sim works like a charm. I've been out of the State and out of the Country over the years. I have not had any problems.
Do not deal with the in store sales people. They are liars. At least the ones I encountered in Los Angeles when I brought in my Unlocked TyTN II to get a plan.
I was told that I HAD to sign a 2 year contract. That they did NOT do 1 year contracts or NO contract service. I mentioned that I was not buying a phone from them, no subsidy, so I should not be locked into a contract with a hefty cancellation fee. They argued they did not do anything but 2 year contracts, and because I would be eligible for a subsidized phone I would be subject to the cancellation fee.
I signed up because I needed service. Came in the next day with AT&T's price plans for the Tilt (2 year, 1 year, and No contract prices) and showed it to them, demanded (politely) that my plan be changed to non-contract. They refused...I called them liars (not at all politely this time) in front of their customers. I walked out and later called the 800 number, and had it straightened out.
I will never deal with these people in the stores again.
You guys are assuming an awful lot of knowledge on the part of sales people that spend probably 80-90% of their day selling far more traditional phones to customers, probably aren't trained all that well, and likely make in the vicinity of $8-9/hr. to start. I doubt that their liars, I suspect that they couldn't actually step you through all of the options that actually are available if their lives depend on it.
The folks in the call center tend to be "better" because they're handling far more volume from people, have immediate access to a knowledgebase on-screen that provides them the right information quickly, and have backup personnel waiting in the wings to answer questions.
Maybe it'd be better to assume that the store manager can't deal with the turnover he/she has to run into, that you probably know more than they do (if you've been doing research), and ask them to try it your way politely?
I'll grant you I'd prefer the store personnel to be better trained, but I doubt there's the malice implied in the word "liar."

There is a no-contract option for the post-paid service, but it does not include "promos" like m2m. Also, the rep doesn't get paid if don't get a contract, so maybe they're just playing dirty into AT&T's dirtier rules.

You really don't. You can get a Media Max option for your PDA and surf the 3G airways without penalty but because PDA Personal options make more money for them they tell you that you're forced to get that instead. Don't believe them.

T-mobile contract renewal - what did everyone pay?

Sorry if this has been asked before but this is my first contract and the first time iv been through the renewal process and id like to avoid walking away with a contract that iv paid more then i should have for;
How much did everyone pay for their kaiser & contract? Be it a totally new contract via phone/web site/store or via a renewal?
Iv been with them for 17 (of 18) months on a flex25 then a flex30 package due to me going over for the first 12 months (+£5-£10 over a month). Iv also signed my sister up with them, so id like to think they'll give me a good deal.
Ideally ill be looking at the kaiser on flex30 (for £25 a month with their -5£ discount) with Web n Walk. Bringing it up to £32.50 a month
cheers guys
Vodafone
£22 / month - unlimted landline calls, unlimted to vodafone business + 500 mins, 1GB data any network. I had to sign a 24 month contract. I added £2/day to my contract rate to cover this expense.

He asked how much others paid for a Tilt with a T-mobile contract renewal, not how much you pay for your subscription etc
My dad has been with T-Mobile Netherlands from the start and he tried to get a good deal especially seeing that he overpaid the past few years. (Old subscription prices while they keep getting lower)
He got it for €195,- with 50% discount on his subscription for the following 2 years.
T-Mobile renewals were F-ing crap!
I've been a One2One/T-mobile customer since 1999, and when it came to upgrading from my 18 month Flext25+WnW VarioII contract to the VarioIII they offered me exactly the same deal you could get as a new customer. I must admit I had a rant at the guy in renewals, and told him Voda were offering me a much better deal (which was true) and he said he sympathised but the VarioIII was having no special deals done on it.
Told him to cancel my contract at the end of the period, and I'd go elsewhere.
Then I found that Mobileshop.com were offering the VarioIII for free on T-mobile Flext30+WnW (T-Mobile wanted me to pay over £120 for it on that contract). spoke with them and they had it in stock. So, I called T-Mobile back and told them - and got the very same guy in Renewals!!! He remembered our conversation a few days earlier, and to be fair tried to get a deal on, but couldnt do anything at all yet again.
So I took the new contract through Mobileshop.com and got the handset free. It was delivered next day, and has been superb. OK, it costs me a fiver a month more due to not getting the go-direct discount, but my wife's phone is due for renewal in a few months (some Nokia Symbian thing) so when we discuss her renewal I'm going to get them to add the loyalty discount back onto my account.
I guess the moral of the tale is "dont expect T-Mobile to do you a great deal!"
Thanks for that link Rob, iv made a note of that site and if t-mobile dont offer me a good deal i might follow your lead and go with them!
What did everyone else pay?
Andehh,
That sounds very similar to the deal that I was looking. However, T-Mobile wanted to charge me £180 for the Kiser until I told them that O2 would do it for free so I would cancel my contract if they didn't match it.
Not only did they match that offer but they ended up giving me the £5/month off on the contract as well.

Any news on an O2 version of the Diamond2?

I notice the post showing the images and dates for the T-Mobile Diamond2, is there any news on an O2 version? I believe they didn't bother with the Touch HD, but since they had the Diamond, I presume they'll do the Diamond2?
The Touch HD was exclusive to Orange, thats why O2 didnt offer it unless you go to and indepentant retailer who will package the Touch HD along with an O2 tariff.
I've not heard any news about the diamond 2 being exclusive to anyone yet so i would just keeps your eyes open.
Currently mobilephonesdirect are offering the diamond 2 with T-Mobile and Vodaphone - mobilephonesdirect
If you already have an O2 sim, consider switching to a Simplicity tariff and purchasing an unlocked D2 from Play or Amazon or one of the other suppliers mentioned in other threads.

Cheers for that! As it happens, I have just done that. I've gone from £40 a month to £20 a month for pretty much the same deal, but slightly more texts, and a month-by-month rolling contract. So that's £240 a year saved to put towards a new device bought retail.
Andy, push for more
I was on simplicity back in Dec 07 when I first got it @ £25 a month
Went down to £20 after a £5 off for life loyalty discount
Went down a further £5 for more loyalty
Now paying £15 for
800mins cross-network anytime
Unlimited Blackberry
Unlimited Email
Unlimited Internet
Unlimited SMS/MMS
Not bad eh? :- )
My bills rarely now go over £18

That's a good deal. They've just offered me:
400 mins
1000 texts
unlimited internet
reduced from £35/month to £20/month for loyalty
plus a £150 instant rebate, so no bills for over 6 months or an average of £11.67/month for 18 months
Perhaps I should push for more.
Just spoken with Devicewire and their delivery due today has been delayed at Customs. They're now quoting arrival on Thursday 17/4 with delivery Friday 18/4.
Another plus with an "independent" device: Firmware updates and bugfixes direct from HTC instead of waiting for the next carrier release. Can't wait for my 2-year contract to run out, I'll never buy a device tied to a carrier again.
Touching on the now-obsolete O2 question, that usually is country-specific. While the Touch HD may have been exclusive to Orange in the UK, it was exclusive to O2 in Germany.
The D2 is to be available on T-Mobile as MDA Compact 5, it does have a different shell though... I was speaking to O2 when my upgrade was due, and they said it'll probably be another month. And I here Orange will be stocking it very shortly aswell. Like others have mentioned though, you can go through the likes of MobilePhonesDirect or mobiles.co.uk and you can get the D2 on either of the 4 major networks.
i think its out in germany now, as the o2 german website below has the rom available. check out;-

Any news on if UK O2 will stock D2? Im due an upgade soon
Just phones O2 Upgrades and still no news about the Diamond 2. I've got a month until I can upgrade though so I will have to wait.
Andrew.
I upgrade via the CPW over a month ago and I'm with O2
Isnt CPW different to O2 though? as in do you get to keep any current loyalty discounts etc?

Car Phone Warehouse is separate to O2, but they do some good deals. Not sure what customer loyalty bonus gives you with O2, but I have got some good cashback deal with CPW. Currently on 600 Xnet min, 1000 texts and unlimited net usage forthe equivalent of £25 pcm. In got the misses on a SIM only upgrade last time with 800 xnet mins etc etc, for the equivalent of just over £2 pcm (yes two!!).

Leaving Orange for the TD2 - how best to do it?

Hey everyone, It's been really interesting reading the comments here, especially regarding T-Mobile and their riduclous failure to release the phone properly. I have a question about my new upgrade to the TD2...
I am just finishing a contract with Orange - one of the reasons I went with them is because they always have the HTC handsets and I love them. I called up to ask if they were getting it in and told they didn't know. I then asked for my PAC code and the guy at retentions (whose job is to stop me leaving) asked me why. I informed him that I am extremely particular about which handset I get and T-Mobile have it whilst Orange don't. He then had the nerve to argue with me! He kept telling me that only Orange get HTC phones, it's an exclusive contract, etc. I calmly told him that it was an HTC phone that T-Mobile were getting but rebranded. Our conversation went something like:
"Why are you leaving Orange after 7 years?"
"Because I want the HTC Touch Diamond2 and you don't have it."
"Neither do T-Mobile."
"Yes, they do."
"No they don't." rolleyes
"Really, they do. It's called the MDA Compact 5."
"I'm looking at their website right now and it's not listed there"
"I know it isn't. But there are numerous press releases confirming it, not to mention I just spoke to them personally."
"Are you thinking of the G1?"
"NO. It's the HTC Diamond 2."
"Only Orange have HTC phones. It's exclusive."
...etc until I lost patience and told him that this was one of the reasons I was leaving Orange.
I have always been someone who attaches to a network directly rather than through a reseller, but I've discovered that some of these online places like MobilePhonesDirect do rather better deals for new contracts than the networks themselves do. I was thinking of the 18 month Combi 30 + WnW - the handset would be free which is better than T-Mob do themselves! (http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/Brands/HTC/b509/n447/p10957.aspx)
My question is, given that I'm giving up on 7 years-worth of loyalty bonuses, would it be better to go to T-Mob via MPD or go direct and pay more for the handset? Am I at any disadvantage from buying from a reseller?
Cheers for your help!
I left Orange aeons ago, after running with them for 18 months with my Tytn 1; their data packages were laughable then (4 pounds a month for 5MB) and although are better now, still pathetic compared to other operators. No idea why they don't sort out their attitudes towards data given the fact they carry internet phones.
Anyway, original question - a D2 off ebay is between £350-400; got mine for £380. I now have a 30 day rolling contract for £17 from O2 - 600 mins, 1200 texts, unlimited web. The maths doesn't support it really - you can get a D2 on a similar contract for £25 a month on a 24 month contract (£600 in total) - compared to my independantly bought handset and contract (£788 if carried for 24 months), I've shafted myself.
On the other hand, I was desparate for a new phone; I'd had a Kaiser for 18 months on T-Mobile (who 3 weeks ago said they would not be doing the HTC Diamond 2 (cretins for not knowing their Vario V is the D2)), and my credit checks wouldn't let me have the D2 on O2.
Also, this does mean I can get the next "must have" phone on contract instead of having to wait 2 years for an upgrade.
i got the touch diamond 2 for free on a 24month contract 600 minutes talk time any network and unlimited text any network for £25 a month its an O2 contract but arranged through i think it mobiles.co.uk just search for touch diamond 2 deals on google. Also first 7months are half price
Cool, thanks for the info. What I was wondering is if it makes any difference going through a reseller regarding upgrades. So, let's say I got an 18 month contract on T-Mobile via one of the reseller sites. Could I then call up T-Mobile and negotiate directly with them for a new contract and phone? And would it make a difference that I didn't originally go directly with them?
I had been a customer of O2 for 10 years when I decided to leave to get my mitts on a TD2.
The loyalty only goes so far so I wasn't too fussed to leave. I also had to jump networks to get the best deals from an online reseller (for some reason staying with the same provider yields much worse deals).
I had been on a £15pcm Simplicity tariff with the web bolt-on since my previous phone went out of contract.
I went with the 18 months T-Mobile Combi 30 + WnW plan from Mobilephonesdirect. Had it a month now and pleased as punch. A few advantages of going through a reseller (especially the mobilephones direct deal)
1 - The phone is unlocked and unbranded so when that Windows Mobile 6.5 goodness(?) is released as promised by HTC I won't have to wait and if in 17 months time I want to change provider then I can keep the phone and get a cheap SIM only tariff.
2 - The deals are more competitive. If I'd bought an unbranded TD2 outright and kept my O2 tariff I'd be paying over the odds compared to the "free" handset offered by MPD over the life of the contract. If I'd waited and gone with the T-Mobile version I'm pretty sure I'd be paying three figures for the handset.
3 - With MPDs £50 of accessories offer you can get a 16Gb card for £25 (Yes I know the fact that they charge £75 for it isn't the cheapest, but in real terms it still has only cost me £25 and I now have oodles of storage for MP3s, etc)
4 - My ongoing contract is directly with T-Mobile not MPD so I can start building some T-Mobile "loyalty"
TBH T-Mobile works better than O2 in some places and worse in others to the extent that I think they just about balance out. Just odd to get cut off in the car in places that weren't a problem and then be able to carry on in longstanding O2 blackspots!
My tuppence.

Amazing isn't it... I bought my D2 from mobile phones direct and it's been a perfect experience so far. I actually ordered the phone on the day it came out and was absolutely amazed when it turned up next day, on a Saturday morning.
I'm on the Combi 30+ WnW and the account is with T-Mobile. It appeared on my existing T-Mobile account page on the web. I assume I'll start building loyalty with them again. The phone was free and there was £50 of freebies so bought 8GB card and car charger. ExpanSys charged £50 for the phone and no freebies.
It was rather amusing when I cancelled my old contact and got through to the inertible loyalty team. At least they were english. I tried to point out that I wasn't really leaving T-Mobile, just going sideways. And only did it because T-Mobile didn't (at the time) offer the phone.
So go for it!
Cheers, Rob.
I'm another happy MobilesPhonesDirect.com customer and the asnwer to your main question is yes: you will be a t-mobile customer like any other.
Tony
Wow! Thanks everyone so much for your responses, that's really helped me cement my choice. I really appreciate your feedback. On the strength of this I am going to purchase it on T-Mob via MPD as soon as my stupid PAC code comes through.
Thanks again!
Why not go through carphone warehouse and get the TD2 on orange
you wont loose your loyalty bonuses !!
i dont see what the issue is ?
carphone warehouse will do it for u on orange it will come unlocked to all netwoerks without the stupid operator branding. Am with orange and did mine at the carphone warehouse.
Good Luck buddy
There's no point me going through the Carphone Warehouse as they'd set me up with a new contract, which would defeat the point of having loyalty with Orange. For new contracts, T-Mobile definitely win with the TD2.
Having said all this, Orange did say they'll be launching the Touch Pro 2 soon, so there's always the option of getting that (hopefully free) then selling it on eBay and buying a sim-free TD2 instead. It never gets any easier to make choices, especially now that 18 months seems normal.
Double post
What's the data plan like on Orange though?
When I was looking to jump ship and was looking at operators direct (as well as through resellers) I found Vodafone and Orange's websites to be almost cryptic as to what, if any, data bundles were included or available seperately.
Pretty useless when your wanting a phone that elevates itself to Smartphone status by virtue of it's many data using features!
When I bought via MPD I went with T-Mobile over the Voda offers purely for the better (and clearer explained...) data tariff. T-Mobile are certainly one of the more progressive operators when it comes to data, and who ever you get your TD2 from or through, be sure that to get the best from the handset you have a good voice AND data plan!
Though I have now learned that my last bill has £6odd on it for simply checking voicemail.......
Niall
A good point - Orange will throw in their data bundle if I stay with them, which at 500MB isn't as good as T-Mobile's 1GB but would be enough for my needs.
The question for me now is do I wait for Orange to give me a good deal and a Touch Pro I can sell, or jump ship to T-Mobile and risk ending up paying much more?
Decisions, decisions...

Ohh I gave up trying to transfer my PAC code across. It just too much like hard work as I was going from T-Mobile to T-Mobile. The process was request PAC code from T-Mobile, obtain a PAYG SIM with another provider, give them the PAC code and transfer the number to PAYG. Wait a while (!) and then go through the process again to transfer back to T-Mobile.
Of course, each time you want that PAC code they bamboozle you with crap and you'd have to work through the retentions team. They kept going on about end periods, charges etc (T-Mobile this is).
I was expecting to end up without a number at all!
All of this must be complete bull**** as I can see BOTH my accounts on T-Mobile web page so they are on the same computer system with the same provider.
In the end, I simply emailed/text all my friends with the new number. That was far less hassle.
It's things like this that still give the mobile providers a really bad name. Ohh and the fact that I had go through this pain with an Indian call centre at the start and they failed to transfer me three times to retentions.
And to further add salt into the wound, I rang up when I first got my new phone in T-Mobile and they said "Ohh, you can't cancel until 17th June without a charge as that's when the contract runs out". So I duly created a task in Outlook on 17th June to cancel and they said "But of course, you've just paid for another month"...
Charletons the lot of them! ;-)
Cheers, Rob.

Because if they are anything like T-Mobile, this will be classed as a new contract.

I think T-Mobile on Combi 30+ wnk is unlimited, fair use...
Rob.
Both Orange and T-Mobile are "unlimited", but last I checked thir fair use policy was 500MB for Orange, 1Gb for T-Mobile. (And 200MB for O2, out of interest.)
