Hey guys. I really need to get IE off of my Wing for parental reasons. Is there anyone that could either cook me a ROM without it, or give me noob-friendly instructions on how to cook my own ROM and leave IE out?
parental reasons? care to explain? =)
Anyway, the problem is that some functions of the ROM may depend on IE being there, kind of like how you can't play mp3 ringtones without WMP.
What you CAN do is disable the wifi and data services from running on the phone, which is relatively easy.
Aserg can help you with the wifi, but to disable the data, use MoDaCo's nodata to disable the data connection and, if you want, MMS.
Download JustClean EBO and then just remove the BROWSER folders from the SYS folder.
First off, thanks for the bullet speed response.
Second. what functions would require IE? Any chance that I don't use any of them?
Third. Is there a way to disable Wifi without having it just as easily come back on?
Fourth. I don't have any data plan, but will I lose any features (other than web browsing) without having wifi?
1. You're welcome
2. I don't know, but there might always be something. I refer you to one of the more senior cooks (ivan, ttran, itje).
3. You could just not turn it on in comm manager. This is usually foolproof to an extent, but if they want assurance, ask Aserg how to disable the services.
4. Nope.
Thank you so much ivanmmj! Worked like a charm! But how do I delete it's icon from the program directory?
Open your initflash.dat file (I think that's what it's called... I'm at work, so this is from memory) using NOTEPAD. Look for the internet explorer.lnk and delete that. Then save the file and open it with a HEX editor. Then remove the first two parts. Something like FE FE or something. Or, if you don't want to recook, go to your \Windows\Start Menu and delete the Internet Explorer.lnk since it's not "cooked" but created whenever you flash/hardreset by that dat file I mentioned.
Very Good Good
I tried searching the board but didnt find any appropriate link regarding this..
anyway there are some factory programs loaded that I dont need/use, is there a way to remove them to free up RAM?
uninstall
if you are referring to uninstallation tts similar to uninstalling a program on windows...
then u can find it under Start >>> Settiings.. not the tf3d's settings but the one under windows mobile
there should be a icon called REMOVE PROGRAMS under the SYSTEM tab..
alternatively, you could run activesync and under program management untick the relevant programs and it will uninstall on its next sync

im talking about the stock programs...not anything that I installed. I'm talking about the factory loaded programs like windows live, bubble breaker, internet explorer, RSS hub, etc. I want to remove those to free up space.
its called cooking your own ROM..
you can have certain things not load up by doing a soft-reset when the auto-config pops up on 1st boot after ROM upgrade or hard-reset..
but then you gotta go find the cabs for the stuff that you want

No apps what-so-ever, just a basic, base rom, that includes a folder full of cabs, with a launcher than allows you to select which cabs to install.
Flash the new rom, then manually exec the launcher, put ticks next to the apps you want, networks you want setup etc, then hit the go button and sit back while your device gets only the stuff you actually want installed.
Thats my ideal!

ROTFL! "Panelstine"! MUHAHAHA...
The idea for the basic ROM with separate CAB folder sounds great.
I'm also a big fan of Windows Side Show, if you haven't seen it yet you should definitely sheck it out. It's an app using BlueTooth to control your Vista machine, e.g. Windows Media Player, PowerPoint, Outlook, Facebook, etc. Very cool app I must say, but if the basic ROM will get cooked I can install that again myself.
As well as also liking to choose! I would also like to see Remote Sim Access for connection to certain handsfree car kits...
This notion of installing cabs after the flash is all well and good but they will take up storage space, you can't install them to the rom after the flashing procedure so they need to be built in before the flashing procedure to get them into the rom space, maybe one day there'll be a simple chooser to allow people to build their own roms but it's still a long way off..
There is a system to allow people to install their own cabbed software automatically it's called UC and developed by Sleuth255 there's a config builder for it here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=371832
the rom needs to be built as UC compliant to do this but that's not hard.
The Rom has 512mb of space, this can't be used after a rom has been flashed, so unless you fill it with applications it's going to remain empty and be wasted. it shouldn't be used for apps that get updated regularily 'cos that's a pain to overwrite, or commercial apps 'cos that restricts what people can use.
IMHO It's better to have all the essential apps (and things like tf3d) built into the rom and save the 256mb of storage for apps that are updated frequently or commercial stuff.
Hi
I see what you mean, but given that the X1 has loads of storage, I cant see post install of apps being an issue. You would have to install every app on the planet to fill 256MB? Apps that have huge requirements (tom-tom etc) would just use the SD card?
Additionally, this would mean that those apps had an entry in 'remove programs' and thus could be easily upgraded when new ones came out - or removed if no longer required. Also, you would not need to flash a new rom just to get the latest TF3D installed.
Personally, I just don't have the time to re-flash more than once every 6 months - it takes too long to get the device back into a state where its usable again.
I think this convenience is a small price to pay for under utilising the 512MB of ROM.

I have tried many roms, and have found my favourite to be: Williyung's ROM 826X Windows Mobile 6.5.5 build 23519.
I prefer it due to long battery life, and the finger friendly menu's of 6.5.5.
The only issue that I have with this rom is that it is using MS Office 10, which is good, however the excel regularly corrupts files of mine after using them.
What I basically mean is that I will use a file, save it, and go back to use it, and its saved at 0b, which no data what-so-ever.
This is frustrating to me, and I would like to try the older version of Office Mobile to see if it fixes the problem.
Is there any way for me to replace the cooked version on this rom?
shouldn't be a problem: the later installed one will get a separate installation folder under Start (I expect the current installation is located elsewhere)
you can, if you want, remove the cooked-in office, check via properties of \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Office Mobile\*.lnk for location of executable files and delete them (if you want to save space)
or keep the files and simply adapt the above shortcuts to the new files/file location)
cheers
Thanks for the reply Draken.
Where would I be able to find a copy of the original office mobile? I have searched around and cant find a cab?
the cooked-in one? no idea what is the exact version he used, therefore hard to tell
but: if you don't delete it and only modify the shortcuts you can preserve it, shouldn't take up much space
if you want it removed: marketplace, search (beta, alternative) or even pm williyung for his cab
