I've just started developing engineering software for the TyTNII for the telecoms community which I will be posting here as "freeware".
Like every other developer here I wrote a "CellTrack" clone in c# using RIL. The problem is, once the phones "in call" the MCC/MNC/Cell ID stops updating. No matter how many times I query the RIL, it always reports the same Cell ID even though I've driven 30 miles from the originating cell.... end the call and it'll instantly flick over to the new correct cell.
The question is before I go insane ... is there anyway to get live updates whilst the phones "in call" .... I've tried loads of RIL clones and they all do the same.
It'd be a killer app if this could be done!!

Right ... I've discovered that it's impossible in Windows Mobile to get the Cell ID whilst the phone is "In Call", either if you try to get it from the RIL or via AT commands (AT+GREG).
I think this is because "hand overs" are done by the phone only reporting the surrounding bcch numbers to the BSC but i'm probably wrong ... Only spent 4 years doing BTS data!!
Hopefully someone will read this and it'll save them a week of trying!!!

I am not a developer but maybe the following can be of help.
Are you speaking about UMTS right?
The MCC/MNC/Cell ID you access from the RIL is probably updated only when the mobile performs "Cell Reselections". The latters are performed only when the mobile is Idle or using the common channels.
When you are in a call, "Cell Reselections" are not anymore performed. "Hard, Soft, or Softer handovers" are used instead.
The mobile keeps a list of connected cells (they can be more than one). In the UMTS standards this list is called "active list set".
The phone just sends measurement reports to the RNC. The latter commands to the phone which cell to add, remove, or replace from the active list set.
Therefore the cellID you are getting with the RIL command remains obsolete.
If you have a RIL query or AT command to get the "active list set" than you are done!

As for the Windows Mobile clones of Cell Track ... if you search for CELLID in the forum you can take your pick of which one you like the look of. they all work pretty much the same. You will need to be able to build the database yourself like you did with Cell Track.

Mines just like Cell Track, but the main plus points i've added is a "Bearing to site", and a "Distance to Site (In miles)" which updates live from the GPS.

Somewhat oriented towards cycling, but can be used for walking or driving, this software grabs coordinates from the built-in (or external) bluetooth device and uploads the data to a website in real time. I believe you can also view the current location real time, or the current route, or previous routes! It has a website that you register a user/pass with which also goes into the program for uploading. When you want to view your routes, you go to a slightly different place on the same server and it appears to use Google Maps to overlay the information.
It also has the option to store the data and upload it later.
I've just experimented with it a little, but so far it's quite cool. I see some other related software to this discussed around here, so figured some folks might be interested.
I have found one bug which I'm going to report.. If the data connection gets severed it seems to get confused and can't re-start tracking, then it crashed on me, but no biggie, just started it back up.
I think I'll also make a suggestion for log frequency.. Right now I think it's logging per GPS frequency (1 per second) but for slower moving transportation or for potential battery/data savings, I think it could easily be changed to higher values, such as 1 data point in 5, 10, 15s etc..

I was going to check out the TrackMe solution but it required .net 3.5 and I didn't want to get into that, as I've heard that can break other software that's written for 2.0.

I work for all the major carriers and i cannot for the life of me figure out why you guys need these oddball software programs. Everything we need at work is provided. Granted it would be cool to have RMT 30 on my phone and be able to plug it directly into the 4.0b modcell but beyond the "how cool am i" part. I dont get it.
Well, its very usefull that you are able to lock your phone on a certain cell, in the case your phone is frequency hopping, for instance when you are standing in a skyraiser your phone will see different cells and will select a different cell each time its about 3 dBm stronger. well standing in a tall building causes that easily. you will see roughly 50 different cells and the 20 are almost the same strenght => causing your phone to go nuts and you are unable to make a proper phone call.
At this point you take control your self and lock your phone on a certain cell and you can call without problems.

your phone will make a handover to another cell only if your serving cell condition is bad. let the network handle it...

More real adventure of this option, if user into the traffic jump, or on the stadion all phones connect with the nearest BTS and network busy, you can manually connect to the more far station and make a call. Also hepful if it is more near roaming BTS then mother's - possibly to manually connect with it for avoid roaming extracharge.
Frequency lock

Just like what the TS was asking, I too am looking for an application similar to NETMON/FIELDTEST of Nokia that has "Frequency locking" capability that is compatible with my HTC WM6. It is really necessary in my field to do a frequency channel lock specially during commissioning of a new BTS and/or MSS so I can force my location update on that test BTS. I am able to do this with nokia NETMON or with its version of FIELDTEST app by selecting 112 display & entering the "frequency" value of the test BTS.
Is it really asking too much? I am really hoping that our phone can support this kind of application.

Does anyone know exactly what is causing this problem because it continues to happen across different ROMs and different Radios. Is there some fundamental reason why the X1 can't maintain a connection with IM clients?
I'm on T-mobile in the UK and running the valkyrie_V3 WWE ROM. Windows live messenger will disconnect if i put the phone into standby for as little as a minute and sometimes even when I'm in the middle of messaging. I keep getting messages saying "wireless connection not available trying to reconnect" or something similar.
I've tried IM+ and while that doesn't give disconnection messages it's doing the same thing as i have tested it using different accounts.
I can't get ebuddy working on this ROM because it won't let me enter the password for some odd reason but that has had the same problem with other ROMS in the past.
Has anyone found a solution to this or is it something to do with T-mobile settings?
I should point out that throughout all this i maintain a good signal of at least 2 bars and according to the phone the data connection hasn't dropped.

i used to use AOL's own mobile-based IM/chat client for AIM, and it always kept me connected without problems no matter what. only problem was it was INSANELY slow.
i've switched to slick, which i'm not crazy about, and i'm having the same problems as you. i'll randomly get disconnected with the phone sitting with full HSDPA reception, not going into sleep or standby....i thought it was just slick's crappy programming

Also are you 100% sure AOL used to stay connected because i thought the same thing about IM+ but a lot of my messages weren't getting returned. I signed into 2 different accounts, one on PC one on phone to test and it turned out the same thing was happening just not as obviously.
This is really frustrating, my old K800i used to stay connected to windows live for days at a time, my friends blackberry also has no trouble staying connected.
i too have the same problem, we need the xda gurus to fix this, hopefully they would be able to do so in the near future

pretty sure it was connected constantly. i had some pretty lengthy text sessions and i never got any error messages (IM not received, user not on, signed off, etc). i mean, i can never be 100% sure, but pretty sure. i only used it fo ra couple weeks before getting rid of it, it was creeping death slow for some reason
I'm too really desperate for a solution to this problem. My device is a HTC Touch Pro2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.
The case is that I will launch a new business site in just a few weeks whos customers are for the biggest part young intellectuals more often than seldomly really integrated with the modern IT-development. Hence I've always wanted to add the Windows Live messenger plugin to the site so that our customers can have a live chat completly anonymously without having their IP traced and logged which is the case for the markets paid services. Furthermore, the msn live plugin is completly ad free and doesn't cost a penny. The paid services out there that other corporations use for their live chat often comes with an URL to the host even though the customer are paying for their live chat module. The most important part though, is that I can bring with me Windows Live Messenger wherever I go which for the most part is a complex and not even that usual solution in the paid service segment. I think you can understand my problem now =) I'm just desperate to have my live messenger in the phone ALWAYS and ALWAYS stay connected.

A little more specific information describing what really happens with my device:
Windows Live version: 10.7.0061.0500.2000. Language: Swedish (Also the language of my OS).
I am running the client non-exclusivly. It always stays in the taskbar and never quit on me unlike what happens to programs that stay open running in the background for a longer period of time. In that way, it works great.
The main Windows Live window's (which are displayed and runned as a seperate program) options/settings are set to sync my e-mail although the frequency are set to "manual" and the other options below this drop box are for some reason greyed out. I guess this has to be interpreted as if live doesn't sync my mail at all, which I like being that I do not have an hotmail account or need this feature in any way.
The status of my phone always always show two small 3G icons (one just '3G' and one '3G' above a meter) and if I click in this field I see a ticking clock which shows that it is indeed connected to internet ever since my phone's last reboot. This has never been in any other way. Still, I did download the DiamondTweak and enabled the "internet always on" feature, but again, I do not think that really was the issue and from what I can tell, the DiamondTweak just hasn't made any difference at all.
One detail of great importance is this; Whenever I browse the internet, update my rss feeds or switch to the messenger contact list window through the taskbar, the 3G symbols changes to display an H. That tells me that this "H" must show for the phone to have a "real" internet connection? Could this be the trick, one has to find a fix to always have the H show? If that would be the case, I just can't understand why the phone says it is indeed connected to the internet when there's just a 3G-symbol in the status. Anyways..
Even though the messenger dies completly and just as what this threads owner wrote, shows a "wireless connection lost" message when I swich to its contact list window, it sometimes live for quite a while. The thing is that it just doesn't get the message instantly. The phone can be in standby mode (really haven't figured that thing out, everybody keeps saying "standby" mode but for what I can tell all that happens is that the display goes of) for sure, and then I write myself a message through the live chat plugin on my site but it takes about 6 to 10 minutes for the phone to give a sound and notice me of this message. And again, for the most part the live messenger doesn't stay alive for that long, the sites plugin goes offline and then if I turn the phone's display on and access the live messenger it says that the wireless connection has been lost and reconnects.
Moreoever, it never gets my plugin to go back online either. For that part to happen, I have to first get online with a desktop client and then again login with my phone. For if I stay online with the desktop client, the phone's client is indeed alive, but won't receive any messages. I have to reconnect with my phone so that my desktop client gets thrown out. But of course, is just a matter of time before my live chat module and my phone's client gets offline and I have to do everything over again. The really annoying part is that the phone's client dies a long time before the site's plugin catch up and goes offline. Hence I might loose a lot of customers who think they are chatting with me but never get a reply.
Given the description above, I think the problem really is that live messenger doesn't ping or talk with its server that often, IF the phone is in standby mode. If it isn't, if the display is turned on, I recieve my messages instantly and everything works just fine. Sure there must be an easy fix for this problem, a small edit to be done in a config file somewhere?

Recently I'm quite often annoyed by a popup asking me to select the network I want to connect to. Took me a while to figure out in most cases my mobile signal was weak then. I've set the device to automatically chose the network (as my provider has two entries here, one for 2G and one for 3G).
As I explicitly said "automatically", why I am always asked and, more importantly, how to get rid of that?
What good is an automatic like that otherwise, if I'm just trying to read something (offline) on my device, and all 2..5 seconds have to close such a stupid popup
Besides I remember having had a similar popup when my battery dropped below 30% -- which is where the built-in energy saver should kick in. Instead of kicking in (as I would expect), I just got a popup where it asked whether I want it to activate now. Makes no sense to me if I have to approve each and every action. But in this context, it looks like I have some stupid setting sticking somewhere, setting actions like the mentioned ones from "automatic" to "manual". Is there such a thing, and I've missed it?
Both issues are meanwhile confirmed by two other users running the same (v10h) stock ROM. Any more confirmations here? Or is this a thing specific to the European version?
Select the network manually in the network settings menu. That should solve the popup problem.

Writing "this should solve" (instead of "try it, it might solve"): Have you tried it, or have you any reference?

I didn't tried it myself for that specific network when the signal gets too weak but there was a problem with cm nightlies where this popup did occur also and manually selecting the network did solve it.
OT: Referring to my "should" in my other post: I'm not native English and I sometimes get confused with this whole "should, shouldn't, must, mustn't etc." thing so I'm sorry if my reply gave you false hope, but I'm just trying to help you? If it's not appreciated by you I will leave you and your problem alone
EDIT: One question? Did you even try my solution? Or why do you know that you loose coverage when you choose it manually? Don't write such things if you have no reference

The E-Plus network is very bad indeed but I never get this popup on my WerewolfJB thing (even if I have no network signal at all like when I passed the alps down to Italy).

Well, I'm using E-Plus (since ~1995), switched to their "Base" section two years ago. In "Networks", my O4X shows me two entries to select from (after searching for ages). At least it did last time I checked − currently I only get an error message after about 2 minutes, and no list at all (at least it's booked in with 1 bar) Ah, now: Both are labeled "E-Plus", but one has "UMTS" and the other "GSM" below it.
Could very well be that it's only a speciality of our O4X to display them separately, and it wouldn't matter which I select. To figure out, I just selected the GSM entry; before that I had HDSPA in the notification, now it's just EDGE. Will check later today when in an area with stronger (UMTS) signal, and report back then.
Btw: I'm on stock (so no werewolf), and unfortunately will have to stay there: Not having any Windows machine to play with, I'd have no fallback in case anything goes wrong while flashing (didn't know one needs to obtain a Windows license to use/update an Android phone; not sure if I would chose a LG device again for that reason and their mafia-ware called "remote call service")...
Oh, wait a sec: The "H" is back. So my assumption was correct: The "two entries" are just to show that both standards are available. O2 e.g. was only shown with GSM here. (Well, in the heart of Munich, in a big business center, almost no coverage...) Now let's see if that nagging screen re-appears. I'm pretty sure how I was able to trigger it, just using the elevator (Faraday cage )
Postscriptum: As I expected from the beginning, fixing the device to a given network/provider doesn't keep that stupid message from popping up. Had it a couple of times already again
I recently bought a Verizon Note 9 (first Samsung phone) so I'm not well versed on things. I have noticed from time to time when I am not receiving carrier signal (still connected to wifi) my texts will start failing with the error "Invalid teleservice id".
After some digging I noticed that my phone number in "About Phone" was incorrectly set to an invalid number 1-265-000-000.
I have cleared all caches and reset all settings I can think of. This problems occurs on all SMS applications. So far I have tried: Google Messages; Samsung Messages; Verizon Messages+.
Where does the "About Phone" page get populated from?
My hunch is the internal number of the phone is getting set by some screwy logic and that is throwing off everything that relies on it.
Invalid teleservide id soulution found
I need people to test this solution to make sure it works across all devices as the error seems to affect all android devices under certain conditions. If you would like to read how I came to this solution to help me check my work or you are just interested please keep reading, If you just want the solution feel free to skip to the bottom paragraph beginning with SOLUTION. If you try this solution, which I actually believe to be a solution and not a hotfix, please respond with 3 pieces of information: 1) Did it work. 2) What Android device you use and the version of Android you are using and 3) Your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
This data is very important.
STORY:
So, last month I switched to Android for a couple of reasons after having used iPhones since the iPhone 5. The two most important things to me were being able to stream music using the LDAC Bluetooth codec and having a crack at Samsung Dex to see if I could avoid buying a laptop next year. I was immediately happy with these features that had been the impetus for switching, but then something unexpected happened: the thing that I have always taken for granted, i.e. my phone sending/receiving calls and texts, was incredibly unreliable on this phone (Galaxy S20 Ultra). After doing some googling and finding the official forums (there seem to be 2 devoted to this issue and I will post this both places) I found the incredibly disheartening ‘hotfix’ of disabling WiFi calling to be completely unnaceptable. Not only because I don’t actually get cell service in my apartment but because a $1400 flagship smartphone should certianly not have less functionality in any area that an iPod Touch circa a decade ago.
Normally I would just take my faulty device down to a Verizon store because although I am in IT I specialize in computers more than phones, however since we have been in isolation this began an approximately 20 hour saga via the phone over the span of May 25th to June 19th. After trying everything I could glean might work from google, and following every step that Verizon tech support asked me to try and actually convincing them to update the carrier settings on my account I was finally given the OK to get a replacement device. It is important to note at this point that I had only been searching this error for my model phone and mistakenly had the idea that it was an incredibly rare issue that was a problem with a select few devices.
So, you can imagine my complete and udder shock after getting the replacement phone, setting it up, and getting the Invalid Teleservice ID Error 4 on the second text message I tried to send on the device. It took me about an hour to really get my wits together because at this point I was trying to come to terms with the very possible reality that I was not going to be able to use my phone at home reliably because I don’t have good reception over WiFi. When my faculties returned, I resolved to read every post I could find on this issue.
What I found is that this problem has been around since certain people started installing Android 8 on their phones and that they have been trying to get Verizon to offer an actual solution since 2017. So here we are 3.5 years later and almost 4 generations of Android later and “the best network” has so far failed to offer any sort of real solution to this problem. However, from getting the error on my new phone and seeing that the error was effecting essentially every model device Verizon sells (that runs Android) gave me a key piece of data: the problem has nothing to do with the device.
After getting deeper and deeper into some forums I noticed that one person reported that this problem only occurs for them when they use an Xfinity WiFi hotspot. That was my lightbulb moment. I am also an Xfinity customer. I then started searching the problem from that perspective and found that most of the people reporting the error and mentioning their ISP were either Xfinity or Spectrum customers, and now I was starting to feel like I might be onto something.
In terms of IT, networking is my weakest area. Nevertheless I dove into some forums that have tried to approach this problem from a networking perspective and although a lot of it was over my head I started to suspect there was something about the firewall on Xfinity and Spectrum routers that is causing the problem. After 72 hours of exhaustive testing ( not only is 24 hours approximately my previous record for not having the error, but I used that time to send out as much information via text messaging as possible to try to cause the error) I am ready to posit a hypothesis as to what is actually causing the problem and post the solution that is currently working for me.
As I have noticed that the problem is most likely to crop up for me when I am using Dex and a physical keyboard and have tried to send many texts in quick succession, the idea came to me that somehow trying to send a large volume of data exacerbates a problem that Xfinity and Spectrum routers have reliably delivering packets in the right order and format over the internet to the Verizon network. So, this is what I decided to try, and it has now worked for approximately 84 hours straight and has performed flawlessly under stress testing (Spamming 500 word texts and hi res photos to multiple people in quick succession using copy/paste).
SOLUTION:
I’m sure many of you who play video games have used a function on your routers to get around NAT issues called the DMZ. The DMZ allows you to put a device using a specific IP address on your personal network outside of the firewall and connect it directly to the internet. For a device that exists on this network wirelessly there is a simple step you must take first. You must assign your device a static IP. If you go into your router settings you will likely find that all devices on your network are assigned IP addresses via a system called DHCP. This essentially means your device will probably have a new IP every time you leave the house and return, so we need to make it the same every time so that the DMZ will function the way we want it to. Every router is going to have a slightly different settings menu, but you should be able to find a tab that lists the CONNECTED DEVICES on your network. What you need to do is change your phone from being a DHCP connected device and assign it a STATIC IP address. Finding the option to do this may be harder than actually doing it, all you need to do when you find the option is change the connection type from DHCP to Static and pick and IP address that will work for you. My network uses 10.0.0.XX for the devices on my home network so I assigned my phone to 10.0.0.99. Then I placed the 10.0.0.99 in the DMZ. In my router menu, the DMZ is under ADVANCED SETTINGS and when you select the DMZ tab, simply enter the IP address you chose for your phone.
To recap:
1) Set your phone to a static IP
2) Put that IP in the DMZ
That’s it. A valid criticism of this solution is that your phone is less secure, however I would respond that the likelihood of your phone being hacked is much smaller that that of a PC and if this slightly loosened security really bothers you, just use a VPN. A VPN will keep you safe in a Starbucks on their free public WiFi and it can protect you here (I actually had a VPN when I got my device and originally I thought it was the cause of the Invalid Teleservice error). CAUTION: There has been a crop of predatory VPN services lately that provide working VPNs, but will charge you a ridiculous amount. I use NordVPN (I found a code on YouTube that gave me 70% off six devices on a 3 year plan, that ended up costing about $100) but there are plenty of good services that will allow you to connect to the internet via a VPN on one device for approximately $2-3 a month.
So please, try this and report back. This error has been the bane of my existence since switching to Android and it is completely unacceptable that Verizon has had literally years to do figure out a solution to this problem and yet they have not. My end goal is not to receive credit but to make sure that in the future Verizon Tech Support actually knows how to help people solve this problem, and their techs don’t take your calls and then look the problem up on google, proceeding to be completely transparent in terms of having no actual knowledge of this issue and literally reading the same forums I have already been over and suggesting the non-solutions posted there in order, i.e. turn off WiFi calling and if that doesn’t work turn off ‘Advanced Calling’.
REMEMBER: If this solution does not work for you, please double check that your changes the router you use have stuck. I have previously had routers that will for reasons I don’t understand change the DMZ domain or switch a device back to DHCP from static or simply fail to save your changes properly.

You need to take your device to your local high street retail branch of your cell provider and ask them to check your SMS/MMS settings
I would love to be able to actually go into a brick and mortar Verizon store but that's currently not possible in WA state. I had to have a tech walk me through checking those settings myself (after doing my own research as well) and had somebody at level 3 of tech support at Verizon manipulate my carrier settings. That's pretty much all I can do during the pandemic.
My solution is still working for me though, however 33 min after I put the same post on the official Verizon forum they closed the thread which had had regular posts over the last 3 years so now I'll never know if it works for anybody else. Additionally, there was somebody on the forum who approached the problem from SMS/MMS settings perspective and it had to do with deleting server settings and whatnot. It was so complicated that I doubt many end users could follow the same steps.

Thanks for your efforts. I've had this same issue on my Note 9 for 2 years... Your solution did not work for me.
However, I found a solution this morning. My ISP is not Xfinity or Spectrum. But my network which is spread across a small community blocks some IPsec ports that are required for wifi calling. Enabling those ports on my router does not fix the problem since it is a network/modem setting that I don't have access to.
What does work is having a vpn profile that implements IKEv2/IPsec VPN tunnels on your Android device. I have a NordVPN subscription and downloaded the StrongSwan VPN client from the Play Store. This client only uses IPsec encryption. Using a NordVPN server that has this encryption with the StrongSwan VPN client has allowed me to bypass this network restriction and my wifi calling phone calls and texts go through just fine now.
Hoping this helps someone else...

Scratch this... Wifi calling uses it's own IPsec VPN tunnel, VPN clients only encrypt internet traffic, not cell service. Back to square one...
