Have my att tilt for over a week now and i noticed I need to perform soft reset at least twice a day. I am not sure if that's normal but I think it's annoying since I rely on it for reminders. This morning I had to do a soft reset because it froze during the night. I am not sure if I want to use it as alarm clock.
I am using the Dutty's V4 RTM and Radio 1.27.12.11.
Is there something I can do or do i need to get used to it?
Other than that and the bluetooth not working with my infiniti g35, i love it.
No problems for me, never had to do an softreset because of freezing up. Only because of my battery problem.
I soft reset a couple of times a week - just for good measure (after running memmaid or something to assure good operations). Don't think I've ever "needed" to other than during flashing and installations. Using Dutty's V2 (medium), but moments from flashing Q-Mobile 1.2. I tend to avoid things like cubes and S2U and such (justified or not, I see them as unnecessary resource hogs), but am hardly minimalistic as far as installing programs.
Perhaps you'd be happier with a "liter" ROM? I'm still testing to find the one I want to stick with. That being said, I love the V2 medium - just looking to appease my inner flashing addict.
i love it when ppl use cooked ROMs and then complain about issues...No offense to anybody. I used cooked ROMs on the Hermes as well. Not on my TILT. I do not have to reset the Tilt, but when I do is because a third party program freezes.
And also remember, any program that you install, might cause issues, because crappy programming...It's not necessary the OS...
Using Qmobile 1.2 for about a week. Might have had to soft rest once or twice. Not too bad. I think mainly because of Navizon though...
I never really had to soft reset due to crashes, but i normally do softresets after configuring registries that require soft resets. Otherwise, its on 24/7!!
I soft reset when I find my phone getting a little sluggish. It's like a computer, I figure, and I restart my computer multiple times a week. Either way, I don't think there's any harm in soft resetting too much.
I find I have to soft reset fairly often. Probably every day. I am using stock ROM but have installed a bunch of stuff, so I am suspicious of that.
I do have a Cube installed, and am considering dropping it off. Not sure if that will help or not.
I find that there are a lot of posts about various quirks on Tilt. And I will say, "Gee, that doesn't happen to me", and of course next thing you know it does. Some of the stuff is just me still learing how I can get myself into trouble. For example today my sound quit and I couldn't hear music from WMP. But it turned out that the problem was that sometime I had hit that little speaker at the top which opend the volume control, and before getting it closed I had deactivated sound. So even with volume at 100%, no sound. Interesting...
Anyway, as some said, I suspect combination of installing stuff causes issues. The more you install the more likely it will be problematic. But then, for me anyway, one reason I have this unit is so I can put stuff on it to make it productive. But then, after all, it is a version of Windows, so after a while, probably need to reload from scratch (hard reset).
yea most likely its the stuff u put on the stock? o men do some upgade.
I do soft reset about once in 14 days. I usually do it when my available RAM approaches 40 MB. Don't remember it has ever crashed on me except for a few times when usiing opera mobile.
Actually I after using the TyTn II for 3 months now I am starting to believe that the instability issues we relate with windows mobile are becoming more of a myth than a reality
I guess I soft reset too often? I do it about 15 times a day. By choice, though.

just hard reset, it may help
I normally do a soft reset every morning when I disconnect my Tilt from the computer, since Active Sync kicks in every so often during the night and drains the RAM by running. . . but it's still between 50 - 55MB, even at that. Other than that, the only time I've had to soft reset is when an app would freeze up -- which isn't very often.
most of the times i soft reset is after installing a program or vice versa when it tells me it needs to do so...rarely will i have to do it cuz it froze or whatnot
I'm in exactly the same boat as bapssystupr3m3, I only soft reset it when an installed application tells me i need to do so.
Other than that, I frequently make sure I close all the apps that are just running in the background and my kaiser appears fine.
Only soft resets when schedule back up comes up daily. Other than the scheduled backup, no resets (so far *knock on wood*).
what's wrong with resetting the phone? It doesn't hurt..
I'm using the stock HTC rom, and can only remember one time when something locked up on me (a third party app) and I ended up soft-resetting, the only other times I've done it have been after installing/configuring new things. I guess in the normal course of things I maybe reset... once a week? Sometimes more, but never for any negative reason.
I'd say the uptime on this device is at least as good as my last Symbian-based phone, and the myth of Windows Mobile being unstable is just that - a myth.
I'm using the stock Tilt rom with just a few things installed and have to reset most days. Yesterday when I woke up I discovered my phone had crashed at 11:30 the previous evening when someone had called me. Today when I woke up an hour late I reset the phone because my alarms hadn't worked nor were the notifications for messages...
I soft-reset once everyday (in the morning). It's part of my daily routine now. I use ClearTemp program to clear everything (start menu, cache, etc.) and then soft-reset using that program as well.
The following (long!) post was originally posted at the PointUI forum, but I thought it best to cross post it here. I've tried to organize it as best as I can and appreciate those with the patience to read it and the good will to offer help.
------------------------
My AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) is basically out of commision right now, and I can only track the source of the problems back to the latest update of PointUI (v1.02b, Feb. 4th 2008), as I've done nothing else with the phone since. However, seeing as how I've uninstalled PointUI and the problems persist (and are getting worse), I suspect a virus is afoot, or some other lovely problem.
Since the update, I've experienced the same problems as everyone else on this PointUI thread (system hangs on "running apps" screen and randomly), but in addition to that, several other things. I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware. These have been my symptoms for the most part since then:
Periodically, animations between menus would slow down considerably and sometimes freeze for a moment, even when I had nothing else running in the background. This would happen for any menu: the cog, the bottom bar, favorites, etc.
The touchscreen would stop working (usually, only within PointUI). This usually happened when animations would slow down, but it would also occur alone, randomly. The hardware buttons would still work during touchscreen failure, usually, but sometimes they wouldn't, and I would have to soft reset.
Sometimes, the power button wouldn't work, and I would press it several times thinking I didn't do it hard enough the first few times. After ~20 seconds, the screen would turn itself off and on. When the screen was on, it would not responding to touches.
The PointUI top bar that appears when using any application would, at random, not work. By this I mean when I would tap it, it's like it wasn't even there -- the Start menu would come down, or the volume control, date/time, etc. depending on where I tapped it. Also, the top right button (red X, or the check mark) would not display correctly in programs or the today screen (a check mark when it should be an X, etc.), randomly, and would not be responsive.
Yesterday (Feb. 23rd), things took a turn for the worse. Here's what happened:
When I started up Tom Tom, the screen went completely non-responsive. Only buttons would work.
After exiting Tom Tom (in an attempt to restart it), the touchscreen would continue not to work, both in PointUI and regular old Windows.
Shortly following this, buttons would stop working, and the entire phone would freeze up. Couldn't turn the touchscreen on and off. I did a soft reset.
During startup, when it showed the AT&T logo, the screen dimmed itself to the lowest brightness setting (it never does this). It would remain this way all the way through the bootup process and into Windows as well, never getting any brighter. Even after going to the backlight settings and increasing the brightness, the screen would get brighter, but would never turn off.
Once in Windows, the touchscreen was completely non-responsive. Buttons would still work, but everything would move really slow.
The screen would never turn itself off. Also, when pressing buttons, the screen would never get any brighter.
After mashing the buttons a bit (in anger, yes, but lightly), the touchscreen alignment application came up, asking me to touch the screen in a few places. This worked.
Then, a call came in. The screen froze during the animation for the notification of an incoming call. Also, the phone started to ring, but within 1 second stopped. However, it would vibrate nonstop (my phone is setup to ring and vibrate at the same time) till the end of the earth!
At this point, none of the buttons would work, not even the power button. Did a soft reset.
This was followed by the same exact symptoms ~4 times (touch screen not working, never turning off and staying at the same brightness level, etc). Outgoing calls would work ok, but each time, a call would come in and freeze up my phone.
Eventually, after several resets, the touchscreen would work without having to mash the buttons to get the touchscreen alignment app running. However, it would still freeze on incoming calls (only).
Somewhere between all the resets, I realized that sliding out the keyboard would never switch the screen to landscape. I can still type and my text would show up on-screen, and screen taps still work properly (even touchflo), but all of this would occur while still in portrait mode.
Lastly, the power button would only work once. It can turn the screen off, but not back on, ever.
Somewhere, between the resets, I uninstalled PointUI, which did nothing. I also tried running Sprite Backup, which would never open (and still doesn't at time of writing)!
Before the PointUI update, none of these symptoms were present (earlier release was v1.01b, used since early January). After the update, they began creeping up, getting worse over time. I have installed nothing else since the update, and have only ever sync'd the phone with my computer to charge it.
Today (Feb. 24th), it started getting a little worse...
When I make calls, sometimes the microphone doesn't work at all. I can hear the person I'm calling, but they can't hear me.
Sometimes, the green phone button won't start the phone application.
Power button isn't turning off the screen anymore at all.
This is the current status of the phone. Weathered, battered and beaten, it marches on, still capable of opening the HTC Audio Manager and playing my MP3's in consolation.
Any help regarding the source of these issues is greatly appreciated.
Some additional notes/summary:
I am running the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware.
I haven't dropped the phone or let it get wet.
I may hard reset sometime this coming week, probably Monday. The first thing I'll do is reinstall PointUI v1.02b, and maybe TomTom. We'll see how that goes.
You know, the more I read this post, the more it seems like a virus.
Man... just hard reset/flash a new rom and be done with it.

I thought the above was the reason we DIDN'T have WM viruses?
Virus + Hard Reset = Problem solved?

I agree, at least that way you know if its hardware or software related and you stop fighting a losing battle

That's why I haven't bothered with any of the anti-virus programs out there. Why bother having a constant drain on the system resources when you can do a hard reset, and restore all the cabs & hacks in under 30 minutes?

Just an update here, my phone started acting up again ~5 days ago: freezing on incoming calls, not switching to landscape when sliding out the keyboard, never turning the screen off, etc. 3 days ago it got better, and I was able to run Sprite Backup and tried to restore the phone back to my pre-PointUI days. It had to reset, and on that same reset, Sprite didn't run -- the phone just booted into Windows, and all my problems came back.
Last night, I got a call that froze up my phone again. So I reset it, and by surprise, Sprite Backup ran and started restoring my phone. Now it's back to the way it was in January, and everything works perfectly! This backup was made before I ever installed PointUI.
Bottomline, no PointUI, no problem.
However, I should say that with v1.01b, I never experienced any of these issues. Because of my experience, I'm not giving any test versions a try, but I may install 1.03b, when it comes out. Definitely doing another backup before that too.
Thank you everyone.
Sounds to me more like a hardware issue, perhaps with your SD card.
I had the same issues you were havingh, but without ever having installed PointUi on my Kaiser.
I was using Dutty's Rom version 7 with radio 1.27.xx
only installed aps : TomTom and SPB brain training
So it would seem this is a WM or TomTom triggered issue....
My Kaiser just started doing this very same thing today. I'm running the standard AT&T WM6.1 ROM and have been successfully since December 07. I have a 6GB SD card with TomTom on it, also have had no issues until now. Today, the screen didn't switch into landscape upon sliding the keyboard out; the camera freezes and/or is unresponsive; power button doesn't work (on OR off; with or without SD card inserted); couldn't pick up a call earlier today; TomTom freezes when loading; WM player freezes while loading media.... I have not installed any apps on this thing since January. Seems to me like some memory corruption going on, possibly page file related.
I *did* notice that I had about 45MB worth of temp internet files cached and cleaned those up earlier today after these symptoms started. Didn't fix the problem though, but being low on main storage may have contributed to the corruption problem.
I had hoped I wouldn't need to hard reset my phone but here we go....
I've been using the original AT&T rom on my Tilt for a while.
For new message notifications, I set it to make a sound only (ie. no message on screen or vibration etc).
With the old rom, whenever Blackberry Connect pushed new email to my phone, it would just make the sound and stay off.
Now with the new 1.62 rom, the phone turns on with every new message.
I have installed all the same apps, the notification settings are the same (even the sound file) - so I have no idea if this is a "new feature" in the rom or not.
I usually keep my backlight on max with a 3-4min switch off but now with it switching on intermittently, I've had to keep it on min backlight and 30sec switch off - and it still drains my battery life before the end of the day!
Anyone else seeing this problem? I tried searching the Kaiser forums and found nobody reporting the same problem.
On a positive note, the new rom seems to have stabilized the phone. With BBC on previous rom, I had quite a few of the "phone freeze" problems daily. So far after the first day - no freezing... did I just trade-off one problem for another (albeit less critical)?
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
I don't think it's a new feature, because I haven't had that happen with mine. I hate to suggest a hard reset, but that may be your best solution...I'm not using blackberry connect, that may be the cause of the problem.
thanks snooginsguy for the response.
Well when the rom was upgraded that effectively hard reset my system. I just reinstalled my apps from scratch yesterday - so I'm guessing hard resetting again and repeating the reinstall probably won't fix things.
What's weird is using Blackberry connect on the old rom didn't do this previously. Anyone else with BBC on the new AT&T rom experiencing this phenomena?

Yes, I am. It used to be that the screen would come on for 5 secs. and then turn back on after an email was received. Now it just turns ON until I turn it OFF. I'm going back to one of the WM6.1 ROMs today, but not because of this.
I'm having this issue as well.
It's also happening with BBC & some of the leaked WM 6.1 ROMS.
I 'solved' it by installing S2U2 on the phone, since it keeps the phone locked & turns the screen back off after 30 seconds.
I'm having the same problem... upgraded and now every time an email comes in the screen turns on.. .sucks... someone find a fix.. please..
If you run phoneAlarm from pocket max...there is a setting under the advanced settings which automatically turns off the phone (hibernates it) after a system notification...and saves loads of battery power.
I don't run BB connect on my Tilt, but I bet that this would do the trick.
I've got the exact same problem. It's killing my battery. I may try turning back on the horrendous BlackBerry Lock application, which pretty much locks up the UI (and in many cases blocks notifications that I DO want to hear). The lock application also caused my Tilt to grind to a halt about 50% of the time, so I had to soft reset just to make a phone call. I'll look into some of the add-on apps mentioned here as well.
What's sad is that no one supports BlackBerry Connect. I contact HTC with a different issue, and they said "We only support BlackBerry Connect on the Tilt", to which I obviously replied "Uh, I have a Tilt, so why can't you help me?". They then came back with, "You need to contact RIM, who created the application". If you go to RIM's website, there is no way to contact them unless you have a support contract. Anyone know of a way to report bugs with this app?
I'll post anything I find that fixes this. It's annoying having to keep my Tilt hooked up to my PC all day long so my battery doesn't die at noon.

Can anyone confirm if this phenomenon may be specific to BBC 4.0.0.97? I don't use 1.62 but do use BBC 4.0.0.97 and see this happen. It didn't happen until I 'upgraded'. Coincidence or not?
I cannot remember which one, but I did experience this with a rom awhile ago. But my rom now does not do this with email messages...it only does that with blocked phone calls when I use magicall. So to counter this I have installed slide2unlock so that it comes on for only a few seconds and then cuts off again. I do not use BBC btw and my rom is Sleuths 6.1
Ok - great - I guess I'm not the only one having this happen. This last week I've been repeatedly getting the "battery is low" warning before 6pm - which is inconvenient since I'd like a phone to last a full day w/o having to charge it.
With the previous rom, I never had to charge it midstream - and I've had this phone since it came out on AT&T last year.
Regarding Deltaflyer's question about whether he thinks it's BBC .097 - that could very well be the case - especially if other folks not using the BBC are also not experiencing the problem.
I'll see if I can try uninstalling .097 and reverting to the old one (I think I have it saved somewhere) next week...
Fix for phone switching on
I have the same problem too. I use activesync to sync over the internet to my Exchange server. In Sounds and Notification, if I uncheck the "Events(warnings, system events). My screen doesn't light up anymore. Hope this helps!
I confirm : switching back from bbc 4.0.0.97 to .92 stops waking up the device when receiving a mail.
At least will save my battery
I'm on scap's Rom

thanks for the suggestion sanguy888.
That's typically one of the first things I do when I setup my phone. Only in this case, it did not resolve the issue.
Sounds like ben5757 has confirmed it's the bbc update.
ben5757 - would you give us an update in a few days - please to let us know how .92 is working with scap's rom? Anything freezing?
Thanks in advance!
I'm on a Tytn II, operated by SFR (France), Schap's ROM 4.31, BBC connected to a BES server.
Had installed BBC 4.0.0.97, but each email wakes the device fromsleeping mode, and consumes battery much too fast (more than 60 mails per day...).
Have uninstalled .97 and installed .92. Works without any problem since 2 days, and device remains in sleeping mode even when receiving pushmail.

Can you point me in the direction of .92? I have .97 installed and the waking up every time an email arrives is driving me nuts. Only other version I have is .84. Thanks.

I would add that I have doubled my battery lifetime
Wanted to thank ben5757 for all his support.
With the AT&T rom 1.62 & BBC .92 - my Tilt no longer switches on after each email. So far after a day's worth of email pushing - about 75 emails, I have experienced no freezing issues and battery life is back to my original Tilt days (which was only needing to charge nightly).
Talk about a win-win situation!!!
I'll see how long I can keep the device running w/o a soft reset!
The best thing was I didn't need to hard reset to downgrade to BBC .92. Just had to uninstall .97, then install .92 (after a soft reset). Also had to tell my corporate IT that I had to reactivate my corporate BB account. I was back up and running in less than 15mins!

Thanks. Worked like a charm switching to .92.
After 9 months of pain-free PDAing, today my Vario iii hangs every time I try to access the Tasks (yes, the Outlook tasks)
It will go into Tasks OK, but you can't enter text for a new task, and it's very slow when viewing existing tasks.
When I try to shut the program down from within itself it hangs and needs a soft reset.
Trying to force it shut from Running Programs has no effect - it says Tasks will not close and offers to end program, but it stays open.
After a soft reset, Tasks is still running even though I haven't launched it.
The PDA is generally a bit slow at the moment, even when no programs are running.
Haven't changed anything - the last few significant things I have done are a backup to my PC this morning, then uninstalling F-Secure antivirus (I did that after getting fed up of subscription reminder messages. It expired 3 months ago)
I guess a hard reset would do the trick but I want to avoid that if possible.
Any thoughts please? Thank you.
Hey guys/girls...
I flashed my kaiser about a week ago with the newest official HTC wm6.1 rom (the WWE version). Everything was great, plus i finally managed to send and recieve my emails with my googlemail account...
however, since friday its been acting very slow... even opening the HTC action screen, and selecting "new sms" either took 5 minutes or just didnt do anything... I was having to soft reset every 10 minutes in order to get any life out of it! I've since got rid of my hotmail account, which i think was causing the slowness (as my kaiser auto downloaded the first 50 emails to my phone, which i believe tends to hog resources and slows everything down). Its been responding much better since then... but this morning it started being slow again, and even came up with a "noisey screen" - meaning a mixmash of pixels and colours... which didnt want to go away.
I also have the same old invisible txt when i type an SMS, but only after I've typed about 30/40 characters... and yes, ive disabled cleartype in the system and in kaisertweak.
I've installed hardly anything onto it, and i dont get why im having these issues... it was running super fast and smooth just after I'd flashed it, but its just been getting real slow again... slower than before it got flashed!
any ideas/pointers would help greatly
Also, does anyone know what BTcoreif.dll is/does?
Do a hard reset and then don't change anything until you have made sure all is running fine, then add the next change (one at a time) and wait again. That will help you isolate the cause.
