SKyfire beta is now open... - Off-topic

So I get this email a couple of minutes ago:
"Skyfire Beta is Open - No More Waiting
We opened up the floodgates to our beta program, so no more waiting to be invited to download. If you have a Windows Mobile or Nokia N or E Series (3rd edition) phone in the US, get it now and spread the word. "
If there's anyone on the Skyfire team reading this...sorry guys. Too little too late. After waiting nearly 9 months to get on the beta list, asking many questions, getting zero answers, you've put me off so bad I wouldn't give this a single glance. Letting me in now only because you're letting everyone in, and expecting me to be happy and forget the atrocious was I've been treated most of the year, is not going to be very effective for you.
Good luck with your efforts.
AJ

Yes is truth!!!!
just click on products select the right one for you! WMPPC with or without touch screen, smart phone Nokia series N... palm os... etc etc
register on his database with your phone number and... TADAAAAAH!!! instantli it shows you the link to the download.. it works.. amazing!!!!

Don't you believe in the saying good things take time? Or even better good things come to those who wait. I find skyfire is GOOD and it was worth while the wait!

They say its just for US even in the open beta. But I just downloaded it and it works for canadians.

To All You Guys Nagging Us To Provide Links For Wm6 Rom

I have noticed that many people ask us (that allready got the ROM) to provide download-links, and even mail it to you.
You have to understand that we cannot provide all new readers with that same info over and over.
If you read the two posts:
WM6 rom for wizard: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289799
and
about the crossbow wwe leak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290277
you can easily figure out yourself how to get hold of it!
It's in your own best interest.
Even people here are helpful, all the post like "wm6 for me too plzzzzz mail it to [email protected]in" is quite irritating.
So "noobs" - please read those above posts carefully, and you wil figure out how to download it yourself!
Best regards
HansMarius
this is probably the best thread ever made
I guarantee you someone will come in here and ask for a link to it...
This is part of a big problem with mobile phone message boards I've seen across all makes and models.
Newbies come in asking hundreds of the same exacty question over and over and over again all because they're too lazy to figure it out for themselves like we all had to before them.
</rant>
I don't mind helping people out, but when it's something simple, easy, or has been discussed to extreme length here, it is extremely frustrating.
message to members and senior members:
guys be careful who you give the crossbow link to. remember that noobs rarely read threads and take the time to know what you have to do before flashing a rom. so to avoid the hundreds of threads about noobs bricking their phone lets just use our discretion on giving out those links.
I propose the opposite, give links willy nilly, let them brick, and then let them learn at cost.
Anyone who posts info about flashing Crossbow, please always pre-pend with a disclaimer to the effect that it will cause sterility and permanent flaccidity.
None of these roms are retail AFAIK. Side-effects will occur.
V
I to gave willing away links over PM a couple a days ago, but now i'm getting pretty frustrated because it takes up to much of my time tom answer.
This post was never intended as a "****ing noobs" post, but they (yes YOU) must understand that this takes up to much of our time, and we must use our precious time to set up our phones properly after we flashed the WM6 ROM;-)
Wow!
It took me a whopping 2 minutes to find the rom... Not that I actually downloaded it or anything...
But let's say that I did download the thing... And it were to happen to install just fine on my 8125... I think that I too, would rather spend time installing things like a camera proggie, and the odds and ends that a plain vanilla rom such as this probably doesn't contain... than to waste precious time responding to the non-existent requests for it's location...
I'd even bet that M$ might even put a "windows update" button in there somewhere just to tease us... Probably just tattles on ya tho... Anyone that HAS been brave enough to click on the "update" button capture what is going out? where the request goes? what the request contains? (I'll bet it just comes back with "no updates available" tho...)
Sure, it's easy to say "let the n00bs brick their phone"... Can't we all just get along? Don't be haters... Yeah, right... What the hell do I know... I'm just a n00b myself, but at least I'm a n00b that knows how to read, and tries to spend time actually reading the forums before making an @$$ out of myself...
Just my .02
PT
I Agree with vijay555 to give them the links BUT AT THEIR OWN RISK
Let them make a SmartBrick
i know it's kinda cool to have the latest and greatest, but what's the point if you are to make your super expensive machine into a mega-expensive paper-weight... doesn't really make any sense though...
Rumor has it that Microsoft secretly *WANTS* these ROMS to be leaked and tested by the phone geeks.
They allow Vista to be officially tested but it would be too difficult to go through any program like that - especially given the nature of how the OS is loaded.
Who better to test them, discover patches and fixes, and give pros and cons then the phone nerds. It also drums up interest for those who don't flash ROMS all the time. Do you realize how many major phone websites are already publishing Crossbow articles based on the leaked ROMS? You think Microsoft dislikes the publicity?
Apple went ape-**** because someone was using the pictures they provide on their website for free. Why do you think there has been ZERO comments from Microsoft when an OS is leaked 6 months early?
By the way, when you provide a link for a lossless photo of the icons on the homescreen of a yet to be released phone, people are going to download it:
http://images.apple.com/movies/us/pr/photos/iphone/iphone_home.tif.zip
I was able to turn that picture into all the icons needed in under 5 minutes. Thank God I hate Apple so much I'd never use them!

Please send all WM6 rom requests to [email protected]! lol

That comment isn't correct. Microsoft has contacted this board and asked for the roms to be removed. Very politely I might add. I have every respect for them for that.
Regarding the rumour that Microsoft wants their roms to be leaked, well rumour has it that Kate Moss wants me to eat sushi off her naked body. As much as I would like to believe it to be true, it's unlikely and probably a self-serving reflection of my own inner desires. She probably wouldn't want me slobbering over her after enjoying Adonis, Pete Doherty, and likewise, I doubt Microsoft is short of beta testers when they have their entire body of employees to test for them.

I will say it again though. I think Microsoft has been very cool about us playing with the WM6 ROM and not getting Apple-sue happy. They've also been cool about us cooking custom ROMS with bits and pieces from all of them.
With as often as many of us upgrade Windows Mobile devices, this only encourages most of us to buy the next device that has it pre-installed. It won't keep many of us from upgrading because we have the new OS.
If it would make MS happy, I'm sure most of us would be happy to take part in a Beta program and report our findings as well as fixes (though they are all here on XDA if they take the time to read).
And as I stated days ago, let's not do anything that jeopardizes this fine forum or any of us on here. If MS says stop, we should take it someplace else.
-Mc
I entirely agree with you.
I was doing some work with some obscure Microsoft APIs yesterday, and as much as people love to shoot them down and whatever, we reap the rewards of the incredible amount of work that goes into supporting functions that we may never even get to use!
I specifically chose to use the phone I do because I can rip it apart software/ROM wise.

I don't do much posting but I have to agree with you guys. M$ can put the hurt on the board/forum really fast. Why not have a semi-approving Uncle and not create another "Napster" situation. M$ wants all the info they can get without the attitudes. Agree ????

What happened to PPC Geeks?

I've been getting 404s for the last hour. Are they maxed out? Down?
we don't know yet.
same here it must be internal, maybe an update but they didnt announce it as far as i can tell or maybe they have a disgruntled admin LOL
They were given a DMCA letter from Sprint lawyers for posting the 3.16 leaked firmware for the Sprint Mogul. They took the site down to clear out any and all of the dozens of links to the firmware.
Of course, that is purely speculation.

I am glad it's nothing too serious. I will be in SoCal the next few days so I will not be hogging as much space on the site as I normally do.
When running phpBB these problems were constant, even when there were only 125 or so users on. vBulletin has made a big difference, but the shared hosting is what is killing it. The host kills any db requests when the max memory or processor is hit, so the site gets killed. I'm sure Mike will get it back up soon, but those of us that love that site need to support him with $$$ so he can move to a non-shared host. His hosting service even has a new deal where you can adjust the amount of RAM and proc. you want (increasing and decreasing price accordingly) while staying on shared hosting. At least this way he can alleviate the problems without breaking the bank.
its amazing how addicting this stuff is i fell like i did when demonoid went down but ive just been going over the posts i need while working offline luckily i read through like evry post on the vista cube 2.0
We contacted wideawake yesterday and he says he is working on it, it was a busy day yesterday we hit a couple of high marks and overloaded the host a bit, wideawake wants everyone to know we are trying to get thing going again and PPCGeeks is very sorry for the inconvenience, we will have things up and going soon. My thanks to XDA for letting this thread stay open so we can let people know whats going on.

Thanks XDA for letting us use your board to support the comminuty further.
Yeah it was absolutely crazy to see that many people on the site at once, and this was at like 2-3pm in the middle of the day when so many people were on. I was certain we were about to top 700! It was really good to see that much traffic.
And I echo the other posts thanking xda for letting us crash here for a while... it's like ppcgeeks is my flat in manhattan and xda is my summer getaway pad in the hamptons lol.
**Just to prove my point, this is my first post here but i've been a member for almost a year! lol
Excellent networking and development with these two boards Keep up the much appreciated good work!
I'm not to sure if I believe this traffic excuse. I think Mikes dog keeps chewing through the servers power cord. Ha. But I to have to give credit to XDA for its relationship with the Geeks and allowing this tread to stay open So all of us lost souls know its not the end of the world and our home has just been closed up for a few days for (we'll say) pest control. Good lookin out XDA.
NNnnnooooo!!!!
so before ppcgeeks went down i downloaded the new (leaked) rom for my mogul. i ran it and generally liked it, but decided it was to flakely because i kept getting disconected from the net. i was just planing a test drive of it anyway because i finally wanted to try out that kitchen (by doguy i think his name is) and free up some room on my mogul. now though, no ppcgeeks
i guess i'll poke around my other "summer getaway" sites like sprintusers.com and here. THANKS XDA FOR HELPING ME WITH MY GEEK FIX
I'm a little concerned now. Shouldn't take this long unless they are migrating platforms. I hope they didn't lose the database somehow.
the site works randomly.. you gotta hit refresh like a bajillion times just to pull up a page. makes me think something else is going on.

2.1 HELP

With the release of the 2.1 with camera and the new kernel. I've found myself checking this forum every chance I get. It has become so addicting that I can't even think of anything else. Almost once every hour, I get on my laptop pop open my browser and goto xda-developers.com (even in my sleep!). "Did they fix facebook sync?! or maybe video recording!" I ponder in my head as the page loads, secretly crossing my fingers. "Alas not yet, no worries I'll check again in another hour (or maybe 45 minutes)" Making sure I have the LATEST has become more important than meals. My friends don't recognize me anymore, not one shares in my excitement when I say LIVE WALLPAPERS! I don't know what to do. Someone please help.

We got something that can be called ORD
Obsessive-ROM Updating Disorder
you might have it if you:
-Flashes new roms as soon as they are available
-Need to have the lastes OS build
-Need to have the latest packages, it do not matter if there is no changes to the application, just as long as it has a higher build number.
-Is often forgetful in daily activities cause you are thinking of what the next leaked update will be
-Often does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace because your urge to browse websites sutch as Htcpedia or xda-developers.
-Difficulties completing household chores as you are constantly refreshing your browser for updated roms
-Often having difficulty concentrating on conversations as you are constantly backing up contacts etc, setting up mail and customizing graphics on the newest rom
-Appearing not to listen when spoken to (often being accused of beeing obsessesive with "that damn phone"

I have been an addict since I got a Kaiser 2 years ago.
Now I cook my own personal ROM's, helped Root a couple Android Devices, and cant stop visiting XDA waiting to get or help with the latest and greated WinMo/Android Mod.
Phewwwwwww!
I feel better already.....ohhhh wait is that a new WinMo build...........
Lol!
I´m Orb and I´m a humanoid, so I can type more and faster
I´m waiting that a profession: Psychologist for not humans to be created, so I´ll be in the first list to get an appointment, I have problems
The real story:
I started on Winmo world back in 2004 when I saw a friend of mine with a Blue angel, I was amazed with it and later on I got an Universal from a trip to Europe, since that I got in love with WM/HTC world, but something was missing....I was bored...
Until I came across XDA!! and all changed, the possibilities were almost infinite on flashing (flashed so many times I´ve lost the count)and customizing, money was my limit to buy more devices so I stayed only with great Uni from 2005 till 2009 that I got the chance to buy a Rhodium (I am not counting my wife´s Excalibur on this story).
Later on I wanted to have a Maple to upgrade my wife´s Excalibur and was looking for one for several months, and recently I´ve found a great deal!
Flashing continues...
That´s the end of the story....for now

I cannot believe that you stole my idea, and used it, and didn't give me any credit for it at all. I made the post/thread "I... Hate... Xda!" and I'm not even linked here, seriously? So mean!! >:{
My Story ...
It started back in late 2008, early 2009. I had just purchased my new HTC Fuze and wasn't very satisfied with how it performed. After a few hours of searching, I came upon XDA Developers and started reading about what could be done to my phone to make it better. In excitement, I created an account on the forum ...
At first, I was flashing ROM's to my device so that I could get the best features and performance. I would leave the ROM on the device for a few weeks; then weekly, daily, and finally ... hourly. I didn't notice that I was becoming addicted at first; my friends and family had. We would be at a social dinner or event and I would find myself logging into XDA from my phone to see if a new ROM had been released. I'd pretend to be involved in the conversation we were having, but cursing inside at the fact that I wasn't in front of my PC to download and flash it to my device.
Popular chefs like NRGZ28, NATF, and ARUPENTHAL would announce an updated release of their next Fuze ROM and I would find myself refreshing my browser every hour waiting for the "uploading" message to change to "uploaded & ready" - like a junkie waiting on a street corner for his pusher to arrive. I would get frustrated at how long it was taking to download the ROM from my 16 Mbps downstream connection. I would stay up all night trying to figure out the best time to download ROM's so that I could push my 16 Mbps connection to it's limit - I even called my ISP to complain about the fact that I couldn't get an OC48 fibre optic connection to my house. I even called RapidShare, Hotfile, MediaFire, and 4shared technical support to plead with them to remove the waiting period - I even bought every single item from the popup advertisements.
During the day, I would find myself taking several breaks so that I could check the forum to see if a new ROM was available or another registry tweak that would enhance my phone. I would tell my colleagues that I had a bladder condition just so I could sneak to the bathroom and check the forum. If a ROM had been released, I would go back to my desk and announce that I wasn't feeling well just so I could go home to download the ROM.
I found myself filled with anxiety wondering if someone else had already downloaded the ROM. Would there be a download slot left for me? I found myself pre-booking helicopter flight services to my home just so I could get there as quickly as possible and make sure that I was the first one to download the latest ROM. I found myself setting up sockpuppet accounts so that I could trace the IP Address of any member who had downloaded the ROM before me ... just to call their ISP and have their accounts suspended so that it wouldn't happen again.
And it got worse; I met a dealer name Da_G. He started supplying me the latest versions of kitchens so that I could make my own ROM's. No more waiting. No more pushers. I was "plugged-in" at the source. I would find all of the latest application packages, and add them to my kitchen. If I ran into a problem, I knew I could turn to him for another fix. I craved it more than life itself; I needed the latest ROM ... even before HTC thought of it.
Near the end, it's all I could do. I even worshipped the great goddess Flar of XDA, so that I would be blessed into the order of modship just so I could get into the "inside track". I sold myself like a cheap prostitute/junkie in need of "just one more fix; and then I'll quit; honest". Then another release of Opera or SenseUI would come out; then a new version 6.5 - the cycle would repeat itself over and over.
I found myself waiting in dark alleys looking for iPhone users just so I could show them the latest ROM I had built; "see," I would say, "I have an app for that too". I was a lost soul like those that perish in the Bermuda Triangle; except mine was that of a lost GPS signal. I found myself on street corners calling friends and asking: "Can you hear me now". I lost everything, my house, my home, my wife, my dignity, my HTC Fuze. I felt like I was in a deep dark cave unable to use the backlight of my Fuze to shine the way.
But then, I was saved - I found ORDER. Founded on the teachings of the grand master ITJE and his three followers of the HardSPL: FALLEN SPARTAN the mystic flasher, STYLEZ the rominator, and the all-knowing MIKECHANNON; the high priest EGZTHUNDER1 seeks to enlighten those afflicted with his wisdom. He taught me that all was not lost ...
I simply had to go buy another phone.

Thank you for your testimony hilaireg, we all know how difficult it is to expose yourself and talk to others about this "demoniac addiction" that is eating all of us inside. Let me tell you, that we really care about you and know what are you passing through, but accepting this and opening to give your testimony...it's a huge step towards sanity and rehab.
We all going to be with you in this long journey to become xda clean...for once and for all...but it's going to be difficult....maybe some up downs...but we will be here for you to provide guidance.
Please group...let's say together "We love you" to hilaireg. And when you feel depressed or that you are going to fall again for this addiction, repeat to yourself...BOOSFRABA....BOOSFRABA...BOOSFRABA...
I hope that helped.
hilaireg... I love you. Ha I lied.
I think I'm the most annoying XDA User aren't I.

Dear dtmfjunkie,
It's coming soon.
Apple needed 2 months after their gave a sneak preview of the new OS to set a firm date of release. Give us a little bit of time as well.
Chill...

Your dear friend Google
I love threads like these! Don't chill OP, google isnt apple so lets get the damn ball rolling!
I remember when we finally got pinch to zoom, they said it had been ready for awhile, you just never know with those crazy folks at android!!!
Well, Google said a "few weeks" following I/O, no?
I usually interpret a "few" as in 3-5ish, but Google might not think the same.

Actually I think they said it would be soon and that "some phones would even get it in the coming weeks" and my guess is the version we have is the "coming weeks" version. But who knows..
Don't let your N1 out of your sight or you may miss it
Lol!!! Love the first 2 posts in this thread.
I'm ready for froyo now
Google sucks! Lets all move to the dark side and get an iPhone! I heard the "wifi only 4thG to 4thG only" video chatting is great, multitasking and folder integration too! Plus the "retinal screen" sounds awesome too! OMG !!!! I love the iPhone.

Hi all,
Apologies for keeping everybody waiting. We are not intentionally holding back on Froyo, just improving the overall experience and quality.
I don't have an exact date to share yet, but we are striving hard to OTA it ASAP. Stay tuned!
Gaurav.

Anyone want to guess the new date now....?
Looks like it maybe a "couple" of more weeks. I just hope its here in time for the
World Cup but I'm not going to count on it.
Speculation is rife that Adobe screwed things up with 10.1 update and since Andy 2.2 touted Flash as a super feature, they have to sort it out before it is truly edible.
Hang tight and don't root your device just for Froyo since warranty claim can be a pain if you do so (refurb Nexus Ones are awful and not worth the hours you have to spend for a probable fix. I am awaiting the 3rd continuous swap, its been hell so far with HTC's policies. Let me know if you want to read about the whole experience, I wrote a lengthy writeup!).
Unfortunately, iOS 4 will hit the scene before Andy 2.2. Too much for Google's nip-slip!

Or just install Froyo without rooting and get Flash over 2 weeks ago?
