Hybrid Car ?? - Off-topic

I am getting ready to buy another car now. When gas prices were $4 plus, I was really thinking about buying a hybrid. Now with gas prices back down to $2 or less, should I.
I understand the environment situation, however with the cost of a hybrid being $5k plus more, I will never make the money back over the life of the 4-5 years I am going to keep the car.
So any feedback of your experience owning a hybrid, or why I should or shoulnt would be appreciated.

Most if not all the hybrid cars/trucks are not worth the extra cost. As you already know, you will never make up the extra cost in mpg savings. The other motivation to purchase a hybrid is people want to do the "green" thing and help the environment. The dirty secret about hybrids are, there was much more energy consumed in the production of the car. So it's carbon foot print over its lifetime is the same if not more than it's gasoline counterpart.
There are no positives to purchase a gas/electric hybrid.
1. The higher price off sets the better mpg.
2. They depreciate more than its gas counterpart.
3. Repair costs could be astronomical. (A battery could run into the thousands!)
Hydrogen fuel cells are the future. In the interim, diesel, not gas/electric hybrids is where auto manufactures should put their resources for R&D.
For you I would purchase a gas only compact. Even GM has some cars getting 30+ mpg.

The only people who really made some money by the gas price dropping were those that bought big trucks and got it for really cheap since companies couldn't sell these gas hogging trucks. They are the lucky ones =/
btw. Hybrids are a no no. You have to go to the dealer to fix anything that goes wrong with the engine. I think you should go with regular gas car or wait for an electrical car that is mid rage. Ex: Chevy Volt.

How can I watch TV on my Advantage?

I have been searching the forum trying to find a good software to watch TV with. I want to add a little more to my device and try to watch episodes that I cant normally watch while I'm at work.
What are some good softwares I can use to watch TV with? I found Sling and looking up another called "Orb". I have no experience with either. Can someone educate me if you have experience?
Are there more out there that I have not ran across?
Thanks in advance!
orb is excellent, check it out ! (but make sure you are on an unlimited dataplan, and you have 3g in your area.
I do have an unlimited dataplan but I dont have 3g (not in area yet)?
Will 3g make any difference?
Thanks for the reply!!

a huge difference mate, GPRS is around 50 Kbps ( a tiny grainy postage stamp for a pic and mono sound)
3G starts at 384 Kbps and maxes out a 1200 Kbps on the athena and means full screen decent quality pics and stereo sound !!
PS since upgrading to Ap 4.0 I am having a problem with this, it works but the video (windows media video) is very stop start, where as on AP 2.0 I got fluid full motion video in TCPMP
Makes since. Well I can only wait until Tmobile get 3G hopefully soon! I have been struggling with TCPMP and Windows Media since the upgrade to AP4.

if you dont mind my asking, where are you ? here in the uk Tmob have fairly good 3g coverage
I'm in Minnesota over in the US. I have read talks about Tmo getting 3G but I called yesterday after i read your post and they said they have plans to launch it this year. But he didnt know when.
i also read that in other states they already have it up. A little confused if that was accurate information or not!
Thanks for asking!
Makes me want to move to the UK!
trust me, you dont wish you live here, the only reason we have 3G coverage is that in comparison to the US, it is cheap to set up here, as the country is so small and densely populated, did you know that London is only around 30 miles across but home to around 7 million people, This pressure on land makes housing cost stupid amounts here.
plus we pay around $9.85 for a US Gallon (3.79 litres) of diesel
OMG I cant believe that many people live in such a small area. That make since about the inexpensiveness of 3G.
Wow...we complaining about 3.99 per gallon here. I cant believe gas is that much. I'm certain we will be there in 12 months, in less we find away to do something.
What would an average 1 bedroom cost in London? It cant be a crazy amount is it?
Well maybe I will come visit first!!!!

Try it here in CT for 4.40 per gallon of regular gas, and that's the cheapest.
...
If CT is paying 4.40 per gallon. Then it is around the corner before MN get over 4.10.
I wonder who is paying the most in the US? Clearly we arent where London is or are we?

in a really bad area, around $250,000 ~$300,000 and at the other end of the scale the sky is the limit, roughly $1,000,000 or more.
see for yourself, this is an example of one of the best area's in london, 99.9% of the normal people that live in london can't afford this, but renting a 1/2 bedroom flat will set you back around $20,000 per month
http://www.belgraviaestateagents.com/
the normal price for renting a 1/2 bedroom flat is $1000 ~$2000 per month, I pay $1400 for mine. but I live just outside london.
but at least mobile phone calls are cheap, the cheapest being 1100 anytime any network minutes or texts for $40 per month
I learn something everyday!!
I never knew it cost this much to live in London. Following your link, some of the flats were going for 3,500. I dont know what that would cost in dollars!!!
When i clicked on "buying" I saw some houses stating 'Leasehold 63 years' or 'Leasehold 193 years'. Excuse my ignorance...but what does that mean?
I'm also curious about the general demographics of who occupies these sky is the limit areas or the really bad areas? Are there families? College students? Single business owners? Political statesmen? Who live in these areas in London?
LOL £3500, is the per WEEK rental value and at current exchange rates, it is 2 dollars to the pound, so that is $7000 per week or $28,000 per 4 week month.
However apart from feb we don't have any 4 week months, so to get the true monthly value they multiply the weekly figure by 52 (weeks in the year) and then divide by 12 which is $30,333 per month.
Im not 100% on the following as I rent, but as far as I know, When you buy a House in the UK you are litteraly buying the house only, IE the bricks and mortar ! with regards to the actual land the house is sitting on, you are leasing it, houses normally come with a 99 or 999 year lease bundled in with the cost of the house (measured from when the lease was last renewed not when you purchased the house) , if you buy a house and the lease expires, you dont have to move out (infact you are protected from being forced out by law) however you do have to start paying the lease holder rent, (even though you fully purchased your property several decades before) obviously this is not a desireable situation, and if there are only a few years left on the lease, it will have a serious negative effect on the value of the house !
And with regards to who lives where, people just buy what they can afford ! you have famillies with 2 kids or more living in 1 bed flats in really bad areas and the uber rich businessman/woman using the multi million dollar house or flat in central london as a boarding home, just somewhere to stay by him/herself during his/her week in work before heading back out to the countryside to spend the weekend with the family.
The average wage in the uk is around £28,000 ($56,000) people in london are supposed to get more to absorb the higher cost of living but a lot don't even earn the average, to buy a home in the UK, the banks have just gone back to the good old days stipulating you can only borrow 3 times your wages (if your by yourself) , which means nobody on average wage in london, can buy any properties FULL stop (unless they have a mammoth deposit). you have to be earning around £45,000 ($90,000) and have the usual 10% deposit if you want a shot at purchasing a £150,000 ($300,000) 1/2 bedroom flat.
My goodness, the cost is crazy. The average or medium is clearly not in support of home buyers, (sounds exactly like here) but was is the home buying market look like there? Meaning....are people buying? Is the market ripe for it in conjuction to people's ability? What about you down the line....do you who hope to buy a home there in London for your family or maybe stay on the countryside?
Are there other places that use a different formula to calculate rent?
If rent cost that much, even for a flat, what is the homeless situation in London? Have the banks ever financed buyers, single or not, where they gave more then three times the yearly salary? Are there other programs that will support buyers outside the bank? gov., corp, etc.
Sorry for having a lot of questions.....this is just interesting to me! Besides, I'm trying to observe more or less the parellels between the states and your hometown.
Thanks ice_coffee

On top of that whenever you buy a house you pay stamp duty (a form of tax) for the house purchase, due to the high prices the govermet eliminated stamp duty for houses below £120.000 ($240 thau) wich is ridiculous due that the average U.K house price approaches £200 thau, then you got council tax (average £130 per month)...I stop ranting about the staggering number of taxes but I really would like to know how Spain France or Germany manage to have first class National health, public transport and council services (compared with those here) and the fourth rich country in the world does not manage.
In the other hand
Unemployed people can apply for housing benefit and income support (the rent paid and a meager amount of money every 2 weeks to help them keep going) single mums and people without income can apply for coucil houses and pay nil
NHS is free as in beer
Buses are free for children and the eldery....there are more benefits, and yes there are homeless some people abuse the system and the system is a mess but just say that in other parts of the world the needy gets nothing.
London is a sprawl rather than a concentration ( more LA than Newyork) Given the chance people will live in garden houses rather than flats, in flats will live however cannot afford a house or profesionals that can aford the £500000+ Luxury pad with river views plus the home at the country and profesionals that use a small flat during work days to avoid long conmmuting, an hour conmuting to work is the norm.
just an anecdote, an american couple both layers and her daugter came on holidays and wanted to see Nothing Hill, they liked the area as charming but after enquiring the price of one house the guy commented, "my god a million pounds for a place that fit inside of my garage"
Welcome to London
and now I better get back on topic
The housing market here has just come out of a massive boom period, where they were giving everybody mortgages, and I really mean everybody, they copied the US companies by giving out N.I.N.J.A mortgages to people with N.o I.ncome N.o J.ob or A.ssets or giving people 6 times their salary with no deposit, this pushed the house prices up, as supply could not meet demand. Now that this boom is over and house prices are falling, there are lots of peeps with mortgages they can't afford, having their houses repossessed. The banks are stuck with repossessed homes that they have to sell for less than they paid for them, which is why ALL the banks have gone cautious again, back to the old days of 3 times your mortgage and deposit upfront !
My fiancé and I are saving a 10% deposit at the moment, we are at £15,000 ($30,000) but we need to get to £30,000 ($60,000) so we can buy a house, we will probably stay where we are, I work nights all over London on the underground rail network, so traffic is not a problem for me, plus it is really nice where I live.
There are homeless people in London, but there are also volunteer organisations to look after them, plus the government will give free accommodation to those who apply for it as mentioned by PBL1! although it would be really crappy accomm and in a bad area and if your a single man you will be waiting years as pregnant teenage girls (thrown out by their parents) get to jump the queue!
There are some part buy schemes where you buy a percentage of a property and another organisation buys the rest and you pay them rent for their portion (this equates to a lower monthly outgoing but adds years to how long it will take for you to own outright !
also if you are a KEY worker (Medic, Police, fire etc etc) the government will put you in discount nice accommodation, any new build housing complexes have a percentage of the homes/flats dedicated to key workers only with heavy discounts.
Feel free to ask questions, that is what forums are for !

International Games/Apps Pricing

Why the hell am I paying more money for a marketplace app/game in Australia when the Aussie dollar is stronger than the US dollar?
I hear the quoted prices for apps/games on youtube reviews and was shocked to hear the pricing... It's not like I'm paying for fkn DHL to deliver it!
It's always like that, different economies different prices. It can do with tax differences, economy size etc. They wouldn't be charging you more without some good reason, we can all just speculate why.
I'm about to buy a new laptop, I always get it in the US cause I can customize it and it's a lot cheaper (roughly half the price) compared to the UK or DK. TOSHIBA isn't doing that for no reason...

Anyone buy a car from an (Local/Gov't/City) Auto Auction? (Help)

I'm considering getting my 1st car this way but I'm looking not only to get a decent car but to buy at a great bid price.
I've got a handle on what to look for, no bidding war over budget, who to bring & vin # checking.
I've been considering going on really, really crappy days with a friend who knows cars, preferably in the bitter cold winter or a very hot summer day, deathly hot & humid. The less competition, the better.
I don't care about styles but how much should I have & also how high have you seen a bidding match go to get a 2005-2008 sedan (mid-full size size)?
I need winning bid price (average), state & vehicle model.
Your question needs more info. Which state do you reside in? I know you are not picky, but you are going to have to narrow it down some to give you some idea what is a good price.
I scored my Jetta for 10 grand. Best deal in a car I found ever.

Here's a tid-bit of info. Go to Auto Trader.com to look up the vehicle that your interested in. The dealers asking prices are usually about/average $4000 more than what they paid for at auction. This way you can guesstimate what the auction prices are.
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/searchresults.xhtml?zip=32514&endYear=2008&modelCode1=TAURUS&startYear=2008&makeCode1=FORD&sellerTypes=b&numRecords=25&searchRadius=200&showcaseOwnerId=1328613&captureSearch=true&Log=0

Also, if you know someone who has a dealers license, then you can go to Manheim dealers auction website for a print out of all actual winning bids for a particular vehicle.
Some new car dealers will actually show you a print out if your a good talker.
Been to a few of the California state vehicle and about 50 DOD material auctions.
I'm looking mainly for vehicles with running motors, usable parts.
What I have learned is:
If you bid on anything others will up the offer for some idiotic reason.
Wait for the bidding to slow before raising your card.
Pro bidders usually try to get the bid up to the low value quickly.
That trick drives off those who are hoping for dirt cheap gimme.
Try to find cars that need a little work under the surface.
Lots bidders shy away from body and paintwork.
Things that don't seem to matter to most:
Broken cracked glass, bald tires, weathering on trim and dirty interior.
What's really funny is a lot of bidders will balk at vehicles that smell strange (no kidding!)
They all smell strange to me LOL.
Just remember you'll be up against the pros.
Brokers look for quick turn-around autos or high dollar cars.
With some perseverance you may just get a deal.
I know some of this is obvious it's just what I've noticed.
Above all just have a good time.
Report back I'd like to see how you do.

why are samsung accessories so expensive?

This. I'm such a sucker for it.
My thought process: "Well, what's the difference between spending $200 or $300 on a phone when I'm paying thousands for the service? Might as well get the best one. And why did I buy a phone with removable battery and storage if I'm not going to buy a spare battery and spare battery charger, and a 64 gig microSD? Wow... I've got a lot invested in this thing. Better buy a case for every day use, and a tank of a case for when I go out. What's this... an app that I will use every day of my life for only $5? That's one drink out at the bars, I can swing that. An app for $0.99??? Might as well be free. Oh, and can't forget the car dock and charger, that's an essential."

Samsung is expensive because they guarantee the products will fit and work 100% with the phone plus every manufacturer always charges more for their respective products. Example: htc charged around $40 for their mhl adapter and $50 or more for their tv dock. It's just a matter of finding items cheaper and hoping that if you buy generic it won't damage your phone and fits correctly. There are plenty of reputable companies that make accessories you can count on. Like otterbox, seidio, spigen, and many others.

So you think a $50 MHL cable is fine when it probably cost them 50 cents (maybe a dollar) to make in china. I'm all for a company making money/profit but that's kind of ridiculous.
For cases, I always hit up ebay. For the same price as a retail case, you could buy a dozen and try them all out!
For cables, chargers and batteries, however, I've been very hesitant to get them "cheap" because of the risk of damaging my device. After reading an article about various chargers and usb cables which showed that the third party/counterfeit brands have no consistency to them, I've stayed with trusted oem brands.

Overpriced Galaxy Note 4 - cost to build

Hey all, found an interesting article which shows how much it costs to make a Galaxy Note 4. Based on production and RRP, It seems that the profit margin for Samsung seems to be similar or higher than that of Apple's overpriced iPhone 6+.
http://www.ibtimes.com/samsung-gala...ive-produce-iphone-6-teardown-reveals-1700769
So according to this article the iPhone 6+ base model costs $242 to make and sells for 859 dollars USD whilst the Galaxy note 4 costs $260 to make and sells for approx $800 USD
Now i know there is packaging, distrubution, R&D to take care of as well as retailer profit margins, but it is pretty save to say they are making a huge profit per device atleast from first time adopters, and so they should.
Edit: I am not complaining, just pointing out that it is not just Apple that makes them cheap and sells them at a high cost.
that article is rubbish, the research & development is free of cost, right? everybody knows that

Or my post for that matter, which states that even with R&D costs the profit margin is quiet large. If they are aiming to sell a low amount of phones, let's say a million Note 4s, it would be reasonable to assume that 10$ a device would more than cover the 10 million dollar development cost which i just pulled out of my ass...why would it even cost 10 million USD to design a phone?
Also i presume when things are priced in the USA, they are priced excl VAT (or whatever the american equivelent is to british VAT), so yes there is 550USD worth of money to be made before R and D, packaging, distrubution and retailer profit margin.
In a competitive industry, the market drives the price not the cost of the item. If the cost is greater than the price the market is willing to pay the manufacturer may decide not to launch (unless they are still covering some fixed costs). If a consumer believes a device is earning an "excessive" profit they are free to find a phone that earns less profit. Or they can wait until the price drops. That is the beauty of the free market, the choice is yours.
And what about price od commercials, transport, and other?
Hey. If you want to build a comparable phone for cheaper for us, please feel free. At the end of the day, these companies produce a product that requires their capital and expertise to develop and build. We pay for the greater value and not for some equitable profit sharing with consumer equilibrium.
Unlike gaming consoles - Xbox 360/One Playstation 3/4 which sales their hardware at day one with loses that will be covered later on by the profit they'll make for games that they sell- in this industry sadly this is not the case and consumers are more then willing to pay double then a high end gaming console for the newest smartphone. Even though apps makes huge profits for the phone makers(let's say apple for example as they have their own phone and their own app store) they don't lower the costs as it's just extra earnings.
And you can definitely tell that the prices are way over priced when when companies such as Samsung, Apple and other big players in the phone market publish profits of BILLIONS a QUARTER.
hell, I'm not innocent as I buy these phones as well. But hopefully someday when the world will be floded with smartphones (including low markets/third world countries) and not only average to rich people will have them prices will drop.

I would say that the only way Samsung will be making money is by making this rather healthy profit margin on the phone, now we know it is quiet a decent margin. Who actually uses the Samsung app store? so no onwards profit there. All profits from Google Play will go straight to Google, so Samsung have just one time to make their cash from most people.
Given samsung recent financial outlook I think they could use as much profit as they can get.
Price equilibrium.

I knew someone was going to jump and say that the funds are going to Google, and that's why I said that apps are billions worth of profits but just extra money(for Apple mostly and Google as well) however, a "healthy" profit it not a profit which they are making billions every quarter of it. That's insane. Most companies, even big ones, don't make those numbers in years, or ever for that matter.
They can cut the phones prices in half and still make great profits(that's what happens anyway when prices drop after a few months-so as you can see that's more than possible) but when a phone launches it has an insane price tag because these companies are based off making money and only money, and they have share holders to report to. They don't care about making a better phone, they only care about making money which results indirectly of us getting better phone bc that's the only way we will buy their product and not the competitioners.
Button line - they *can* lower the prices and make good profits, but they *won't* bc they want to make *more* money bc we are just willing to pay them those sums.
Welcome to capitalism.
For this logic, food in restaurant is also overprice. Even the burger in McDonald's is over price. Less than $2 of ingredients and they sell $5-$7.
WHERE THE HELL is the payment to staff and employees?
Look at ANY big companies balance sheet income statement and see how proportion of Administrative expense accounts for. Besides there are selling expense, and in production cost there are costs for factories and workers.
That's the aspect of Accounting, and in the aspect of Finance they have to take into account the interest (time value of money) on their investment,...
What the heck is materials cost? It's small in the cost structure of a company this type.
And if this is too complicated for you, this is more easier to understand. You guys think Samsung/Apple receive $500 for each of their phone? So if in one quarter SS sells 20mil flagship phones (Samsung easily can do), so the profit is $10 bill. However last quarter SS got the profit of over $4 bill. Where's nearly $6 bill? And need to say that the profit of Samsung also comes from middle to budget phones, tablets, TVs, semiconductors, display, fridge, washing machine,... So just for these 20mil flagship phones, if they sell at $250 lower price to "satisfy" some of you, they will lose $5 bill in revenue with (supposed to be) the same cost. And then they face loss. Basic maths.
i agree with hung remember samsung maintains factories too as well as build them (the latest one in development costs around 14 billion), of all the tech companies samsung outspends all of them. if they dont spend as much as others they can easily out-profit even apple every quarter (higher quarterly revenues) but like i said they build most of their parts thus they incur more costs too. i like to buy the notes simply because for the high price tag i truly believe that every year i have the best phone

Thank you Hung, i am sure us mere simpletons on this forum much appreciate your valuable knowledge that you simplified just for us.
Please, teach us some more.
Not to mention the billion dollar bill in patent fees that Samsung calculated they owe Microsoft. Or their warranty and after sales support costs. The recognition engine for the handwriting features is licensed, royalties will be due. Codecs - not free. It all adds up, subtracting BoM from sales price is not how to calculate profit.
The OnePlus One can be so cheap because they mostly ignore the IP and support costs most non Chinese brand manufacturers pay.
- Research Cost
- Design cost
- Production Cost (material, labor and machineries plus Testing and QA/QC) - they dont do it in one shot. Based on test results, they might even go back as far as redesigning it and so on)
- Marketing cost (TV and print ads, Social Network, etc)
- Operating Cost - Samsung and any other companies have their core operating manpower. People doing the Human Resources, Accounting, Legal, Facility Maintenance, Warehousing/Inventory, Permits, etc. These groups are services groups and not profit center groups so they have to charge a portion of their operating expenses to each of those products to be sold.
There may be many more on top of that. Its not as simple as material and labor cost.
Good thing Samsung will be giving me back $200 with their phone trade in promotion.
What is all this argument about over priced note 4 and crapple fones?
lets get it straight, samdung's note series designs did not change much since day one. so no R&D costs there to recover.jus the hardware and other nuts and bolts. and TW,pfffff,it has been there since day 1,what else is new?????
What the consumers are actually paying for the is god damn knox counter and the equally obKNOXious app targeted at making sure the phone is secured/tampered free for enterprise users. other than alienating other dev, trying to be the king of douchebaggery, samdung is making damn sure to grab more money from consumers and making them pay for useless app (knox) which enterprise users shld pay.
as for crapple, they are known to sell overpriced everything since day one. money grabbing is not something new to crapple, its in their blood and every other else they do. consumers pay tons of dollars for their so called crapple environment and of course with each ios updates, they are making sure jailbreakers find it increasingly harder to get root access, thus ever raising in the game of douchebaggery.
you all can argue about overpriced this and that, end of the day, if you go buy their fone, you are jus validating their douchebaggery and making damn sure they trample on you when they deny your warranty when u root.
samdung is already fast becoming an overall king of douchebag, it will not be long before they catch up with crapple if consumers keep buying their knox infected fones.
