How do I change alarm tones? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Is there anyway I can change the alarm tone to something of my own i.e. mp3 one?
thanks

Hi,
For me, I just convert the format of mp3 or wma (whatever format) to .wav format.
After that, just paste it into the windows folder.
Your song should then appear in the alarm menu.
Hope this helps

Hi,
thanks for the reply.
I have converted the file and placed in the hidden windows folder on the X1, do i need to rename the file same as the alarm file? as i don't see an option to select a different alarm tone on the X1.

Tap the "bell" icon on the alarm page to change the tones.

thank you,
this phone takes getting use to I learn something new on it everyday

Copy mp3-music file to the phone or memory card--> Use File Explorer to locate the musicfile-->Press _long_ on the file --> Select "Set as ringtone".
Edit: My bad. You were talkin' about the notification alarm...

just to let everyone know that you will have to convert the mp3 it to windows pcm wav for it work.

Could anyone just check this out?
The X1 stock roms come with a few different alarm sounds Alarm1,2,3,4,5 - 2 and 5 are .wav's but 1,3,4 are .wma's. In the alarms where you can choose the sound you should be able to choose any of those 1-5, as im using a custom rom, I can only choose the 2 and 5 which are .wav's.
Would anyone mind checking this? It would be appreciated.

I made a tutorial.
Here I will show you how to make a custom alarm (for the wakeup alarm). Note that this is not the same as a ringtone (Normal ringtones can be MP3, alarms cannot.)
1) Get Audacity: Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
2) Open your favorite sound/song with Audacity.
3) Set Project Rate to 11025 kHz (at the bottom)
4) Select (mark) the section you want as an alarm with the marker tool (default tool).
5) Choose Edit->Trim
6) Choose Mix -> Split Stereo tracks (the dropdown in the box)
7) Choose Mix1->Mono
8) Choose Mix2->Mono
9) Choose Track->Resample->11025kHz
10) Choose Track->Mix and Render
11) Choose File->Export Selection
12) Type in a filename (.wav) and then OK, OK.
13) Copy the file the Windows/ on your phone and select it in the alarms screen. It works for me.
Notes:
*) Alarms have to be in the following format:
- 32bit floating point WAV
- 11025kHz
- Mono
**) Alarms have to be in the Windows/ folder.
****) You do ABSOLUTLY NOT want the whole song as an alarm! The filesize is huge (~20MB for one song in alarm format, as it is uncompressed. And because the Windows folder is on the device, you can't put it on the memory card.
*****) You can preview the selection if you click play. there are also useful tools such as Zoom in for more detail, fade effects etc. Just be bold and experiment a bit. Fade out for example will take your selection and fade it.
Greetings.

I was seriously disapointed when I found out that my new (first of mine) SMARTphone couldn't do several things that were absoutely elemtary with all my old SILLYphones. Why the hell can't I use the .mp3 as wake up alarm why the do I have to mess around with those .wav files?!
And when I've found a sutable alarm tone then when it rings the snooze options for 5, 10, 15 min are sooo small that it is rather impossible to hit the right one with fuzzy head at morning. I have to admit I've overslept twise because of that.
Luckily it's a SMARTphone and we don't have to stick with the "great" development work from M$ - thees guys probably never have to wake up because they are always at work
So I downloaded an app caled g-alarm that adds a funn element to the waiking process - you have to complete a maze to snooze the alarm.

I thing better idea is to instal g-alarm. It's free, you can set mp3 as alarm tone and it has lots of other functions. Stock alarm sucks in fact, even in new manila where it has more friendly interface.

Weird

My dear fellow from Switzerland, I just downloaded the Audacity, and, no more 11025 Khz, just 8000, 16000, 22500, and the usual 44100, mind you when I do work with wav files with Samplitude I use the format 48000......But, I found it.....thanks Audacity is improving a lot.... have a nice....

Got audacity is great on music, only on moviesound it stalls.
Mediacoder is a great alternative though.
It has transcode features for i phone and PSP (and 3GP mob phone edition for most other phones)
With Mediacoder(free),i rip the sound out of movie files into WAV.,
and trim them with audacity.
When i receive sms it's Arnold saying 'I'll be back'.
It's only few kb and you can make all ringtones/smstones yourself.
Ringtones should not be longer than 30 sec, wich is the max time my provider gives me until voicemail,so all over 30 secs is waste of space.

I use the stock alarm app. It is simple and functional .

Where are the alarms

how to paste .wav file in windows folder?
This is weird! I created my .wav file and uploaded it to my phone.
Then tried copying and pasting it to windows folder. First I just right clicked on the windows folder but there is no paste option. Then I opened the windows folder and tried pasting in there but whenever I try right clicking inside the windows folder it automatically selects a file within the folder and does not let me paste the new file.
Is their something I missing? How do I paste this file in windows folder??
Please let me know.
Thanks.

To edit your Windows Folder, you have to use a 3rd-party app like Resco File Explorer or Total Comamnder. The standard WM file explorer won't let you change anything in that folder (or edit read-only files, change ROM files, etc.)

How to add a new "alarm" tone/sounds

Hate the supplied ones ! and have one in mind.... how can i get it to add to the list of Alarm sounds ?
thanks
Put .wav files in the Windows directory to use them.
Copy the WAV file into the Windows Directory on your device.
Then go into the alarm setup & it will be in the list.
James

Take them out of there... do the following:
1. Highlight the .wav files you want, Right hand and click Copy.
2. Connect your phone to PC and ActiveSync should start automatically.
3. Click Tools, Explore Pocket PC, open your device.
4. You should see "Windows". click it... It will take about a minute to open.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and right hand click and choose paste.
6. close and click the Time then choose the Alarm tab.
7. Click on the Bell icon and from the drop down window you should see all those .wav files you copied.
is this simple enough for you..?
Enjoy..

Just to add to the above - when looking for the Pocket PC Windows folder via ActiveSync, I found you have to set the PC folder options to display Hidden and System folders.

When I select the sound after step 7 it goes to "default" sound, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks
same here (HTC polaris, wm6),.. not the problem with copying etc but when I try to select the sound it jumps back to default,.. i managed to shrink the wav file with Audacity and Lame to 1.4Mb, i used just part of the song, w settings: 11025 Hz, 16 bit, mono (as low as the settings go, if I type custom Hz, eg 8000 the size stays the same).. i guess this has sth to do with the size of the file, i noticed someone talking about it being less than 600kb big,.. but have no clue how to make it even smaller (there's only 30 secs of song left).. any ideas
reflashed to the latest version and went to setup my alarm/textmessage sounds and none of the alarm wavs were there. bad flash? or just not included in the updated version?
Does the size of the file matter? I have the HTC touch with windows 6.1 and unfortunately the converted wave files show up but much like what other people have said once I go to set it as an alarm it doesnt work it just sets it to default. Ringtones work fine but alarm doesnt
Use the HTC Audio Manager
I was struggling with this and then I came across the Audio Manager.
If you load MP3 file to your phone ( I loaded mine into then the audio manager will find these and there is an option to make any of the files found the default ringtone or store it as a ringtone. These are then selectable using the normal Windows Sounds & Notifications in Settings.
No expert, but hope this assists.

Corrupted ring tone error message

Can anyone please help me with a serious problem that has reared its ugly head. I am currently running ROMeOS v4.6.0 but I have had this problem is other ROMS before so I'm posting this cry for help here. I keep losing my notifications sounds ie when I get a text message no alert sounds and there is no vibration despite the fact that I have selected that both should occur in Sounds & Notifications. In the Sounds and Notifications page if I select an alert from the drop down box for, say, "New text message" I cannot preview the sound when I click the sound preview button and when I select "ok" I get the error "This ring tone file is corrupted or unavailable. Please choose a different ring tone" This happens for every alert sound listed.
The bizarre thing is sometimes the notifications and vibrate works but usually doesn't. A soft reset can fix the problem temporarily but I have no idea when the problem will re occur.
I will mention that I had previously saved a few Diamond alerts and ring tones in /Windows and Windows/Rings respectively but I have now deleted them in case it was this that was causing the problem. I'm have now just selected the alerts that came in the original ROM but I'm getting this error message again and again and missing my SMS's due to no alerts/vibrate.
Does anyone have thefaintest idea what could be causing this strange behavior? I have searched but despite a few references to this error no cure is mentioned. Can anyone help with this?
Solution to the problem "This ring tone file is corrupted or unavailable..."
Hi everybody!
I used to have the same problem. When I tried to set an mp3 ring tone for incoming calls or when I tried to set an alarm with mp3 sound, a box appeared saying "This ring tone file is corrupted or unavailable. Please choose a different ring tone." The ring tone defaulted to Ring-WindowsMobile. I use Samsung SGH-i780 PPC with Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional. The problem occurred after installation of .NET compact framework 3.5 or after installation or deinstallation of NoteM 1.21 voice recording software. I have read many posts and come to the conclusion that apart from hard reset of my PPC there is no other useful suggestion on the web So I had to figure it out myself and I did
First thing I have noticed is that I could use *.wma ring tone and alarm sound. So i used Free Mp3 Wma Converter 1.8.0 on my laptop to convert two mp3 files, meant to be used as a ring tone and alarm sound, to WMA format and then I put them it into /My Documents folder, using ActiveSync. Then I could select these two wma files as my ring tone and alarm sound. Good start.
Then I realized that when I clicked on any mp3 file in file explorer, this file did not opened in my Windows Media Player Mobile 10. So I used my Total Commander for Windows Mobile (Total Commander/CE V. 2.51), which by the way is a great stuff, to set default application for opening mp3 files. After "right-clicking" (i.e., holding down the stylus/mouse until a context menu appears) on any mp3 file you can select Properties. Then choose second tab - Open with. Here you should have an antry ".mp3 -> mp3file". If you do not have one, you can add it by clicking on the Open with button and typing: Command: wmplayer.exe (this application is in \Windows folder, so you do not need full path), Parameters: "%1", Icon file: \Windows\wmplayer.exe, Index: 0. Last two options are not essential. Note that %1 must be quoted! Ok, after accepting these settings, you should be able to open your mp3 files with Windows Media Player. Not bad, right?
The second step involves editing your registry. I am going to describe how to do this with the aforementioned Total Commander, which fits this task very well. You should go to the root of your directory tree: \. Then choose \\Plugins\registry\HKCR. First, go to .mp3 folder (you can just start typing letters - Total Commander will navigate you to the proper folder) and enter it. Click on Default - you should see mp3file. Yes, this is one of the results of setting WMP as a default application to handle mp3 files.
Now, the most important part comes! Navigate to another folder in HKCR, called mp3file and enter it. In my case, I had only two subfolders here: DefaultIcon and Shell. By the way, you can see that subfolder Shell\Open\Command contains a key Default with value wmplayer.exe "%1". This is the second of the results of setting WMP as a default application to handle mp3 files. So, coming back to the point - we are in mp3file folder. Now, you should set a correct event sound handler for mp3 files by adding the following folders: Shellex\EventSoundHandlers\{245F94CF-DD9C-46F9-B4C8-D2B14A877893} (i.e., you have to add Shellex subfolder, then enter it and add EventSoundHandlers subfolder and then enter this subfolder and add next subfolder called {245F94CF-DD9C-46F9-B4C8-D2B14A877893}). Note braces in the last subfolder name! Ok, once you are in the subfolder {245F94CF-DD9C-46F9-B4C8-D2B14A877893}, add a new DEFAULT key by hitting New value, then ticking default check box and pressing the OK button. When asked for the value of the new default key, type XME EventSound Player and accept. Now, you should be able to set mp3 ring tones as well as set mp3 alarm sound. At least I was able
Two more notes:
1) The name of the subfolder created in HKCR\mp3file\Shellex\EventSoundHandlers should be identical to the name of the subfolder in HKCR\WMAFile\Shellex\EventSoundHandlers (it seems that wma and mp3 files are handled by the same event sound handler). If you have different subfolder name in HKCR\WMAFile\Shellex\EventSoundHandlers, and your wma files can be set as a ring tone and alarm sound, use your folder name instead of mine ({245F94CF-DD9C-46F9-B4C8-D2B14A877893}).
2) You can reenable an option of setting mp3 file as a ring tone from the context menu. To achieve this, you need HKCR\mp3file\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{...} folder. In this folder add default key with value Set As Ringtone. Check what should be placed inside braces (instead of ...) by checking the name of the folder found in HKCR\WMAFile\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. My value is E88B4A18-6F77-4bb6-8E0D-DCD4B1F8F1DA.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Creating .mp3 ringtones

So, any .mp3 can be copied to the Windows/Rings directory and be used as a ringtone, but using a full song is most likely too long and takes up too much storage.
The first thing you’ll want to do to create a ringtone out of one of your favorite songs is to truncate just that part you want as your ringtone. First, go here to download Audacity (free) off of sourceforge:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Once you’ve downloaded and installed Audacity, you’ll need a copy of lame_enc.dll to encode your own MP3s. You can find lame_enc.dll (free) here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?lame_enc
I've attached a copy of the .dll, but I wasn't sure of the posting rules for attachments so I'll also provided a URL to d/l from. Maybe I should read the xda-developers forum rules...
Put the .dll file somewhere unobtrusive, but also somewhere you’ll remember it as Audacity will prompt you to specify the location of lame_enc.dll when you attempt to encode an MP3.
Next, launch Audacity, click on File -> Open, and open up the MP3 you want to create a ringtone out of. The interface is fairly intuitive, and the only advice I can give here is to click on View -> Zoom In multiple times in order to see the part of the song you want to clip out paying attention to the time markers for the beginning and ending of your clip. You should shoot for a clip that's about 15-20 seconds long. Anything shorter will repeat (not necessary a bad thing depending on the clip), and anything longer just wastes precious, precious main memory storage.
Now, swipe the song between the two time markers. Next, click on Edit -> Copy (if you’re sure what you swiped is what you want, alternatively you can click on File -> Export Selection As MP3).
Finally, click on File -> New, then click on Edit -> Paste, and click on File -> Export As MP3. You will now be prompted for the location for lame_enc.dll, and after you provide that your .mp3 will be created.
Next, sync up your Fuze/Diamond/HTC “whatever” and copy your .mp3 to Windows/Rings. Now you can go into Contacts and in the All People view you can click on Edit to specify your new song ringtone for individual people, or go to Settings/Personal/Sounds & Notifications to set your song ringtone as a default ringtone for all calls.
This thread is pretty useful, though sounds a bit complicated, but thank you anyways
You can put your *.mp3 ringtones here:
\Internal Storage\My Documents
You will be able, to assign ringtones to your contacts, too.

add ring tones for alarm

Hi D2 fans
I would like to addd some alarm tones and ring tones to my T2. I didn't find a thread yet that covers that.
My idea is to convert a mp3 file to wav and copy it to the ringtones folder or in the windows folder. But I am missing how to display the new tones in the D2 config menu.
any help or ideas appreciated
If you want to use the build in Alarm I can't help u.
But u could use G-Alarm... it provides mp3-alarm files
g-alarm
Thank's, but I don't like g-alarm.
I try always to minimize third party apps on the devices.
does it mean that the álarms are in the ROM?
copy the file you want in the my documents directory and it will apear in the combo box so you can asign it to alarms
No, this won't work. Default alarm only accept WAV file, no MP3 nor WMA file.
if you read the first post, he already says that he converted the mp3 to wav wich is why i didn't mentioned it
cheers
it does not work
thanks, but it works only for ring tones and not for the alarm tones displayed in the alarm menu...
oops
sorry, this worked on the hermes.
on the topaz, i just tried to copy a wav file in the windows directory and it does works and apears on the list of available alarm ringtones.
cheers
When you in active sync hit the explore tab, then within windows under folder options go to show hidden files hit ok or apply then back to active sync explore and you will find the windows folder drop you file in here, then you will be able to use your tone...
Marko
WOW!
Thanks guys!
finally I can wake up with a romantic song and not with a beeeepp

@Moderator : Please Close thread: Solution found .Ringtone / Alarm using local mp3 fi

Dear community,
Having this phone since last September, I have never change or tried to change ringtone or alarm sound notification.
Strange thing (may be normal ? on huawei)... When I want to change it it via settings/sounds/...,
I can only select "sound from device" it contains the 3 files from huawei out of the box and no option to search for file (other within this listed files).
But when I select "Video Rintones" I can see all my local video files???
So my question is easy... How to setup a local mp3 (or other format file and please specify which format if huawei is not accepting mp3) as a ringtone or alarm on emui 10 ?
Many thanks for your assistance ?
The screen shots
Think they just need to be dropped in the right folder, ringtones or notifications, then they will show in the list.
