Hi, i've had my tilt for about a month now, and I have a really large complaint about the battery.. I now have a rom with a battery % meter, and when i'm using anything with 3G, whether it be youtube, checking e-mails, or internet, it sucks almost 1% of battery life per minute!! I have kaisertweak set to turn 3G off after two minutes, but still, what If i'm on IM and I need to wait for someone to message me? I can't have 3g off and expect to recieve anything, but I still don't want to lose my battery in 1 hour if I leave 3g running!
This has ALWAYS been a big complaint about 3G, not only for Kaiser, That's originally why Apple didn't release 3G on their first iPhone. It sucks batteries faster than and Fat kid sucks Twinkies.
Note: The mention of Twinkies is purely for dramatic effect. Tha Hostess company and its employees and affiliates do not authorize or endorse this statement in any way.

You could do a google search for the tweak that turns on the 3G switch in the Comm manager (I'm running the stock AT&T Rom, so I don't know if it's different for custom ROM's etc.) which will switch the phone to Edge rather than HSDPA. This will increase your battery life and still allow you to use IM etc. Internet will just be slower.
EDIT: IT's not a tweak I was thinking of, the option is in Advanced Config - start up Advanced Config (find and install it if you don't already have it) and go to the Menu > Comm Manager option (right soft-key). Check on 3G in that panel, then restart the phone. Open your comm manager and you'll have an option to turn 3G on or off. As I said, it'll still allow slower internet connections over Edge, and will preserve your battery life.
Firstly, try leaving 3G on, and using your phone like you'd want to. I'm pretty sure your phone won't turn off at all after 1hr. Your battery meter is most probably badly calibrated, which makes your battery display run down fast - only to stay for 3 hours at 20%.
Good lord.. Unless I'm actively transferring lots of data, this is an insane drain rate. Something else is wrong, no question.
On 3G with FlexMail with idle IMAP on two folders and periodic sync on 4 more, I drop 2-3%/hr.
It worked for me

Thank you for this comment. I too was experiencing massive battery drain with 3G/HSDPA on constantly once it became available in my area (just this month - yes I'm in the backwoods). Once I turned it off via the Comm Manager, (I had Advanced Config already installed - great app!) it reverted to Edge, just like it used to, and my battery life has gone back to almost normal. I assume I can go back and turn the 3G on again the same way when I want higher speed access again, right? Thanks for the tip!!

Hi.
I don't seem to last a day without recharging my battery (either by USB or Outlet).
I have some useful programs but I'm afraid to use them sometimes because my phone wont last the day.
On a regular day, without extreme program usage (WiFi, GPS, games etc), just regular phone calls (GSM not 3G), my battery power lasts maybe 18 hours.
If i used 1/4 of my installed programs moderetely, my battery power lasts for about 10-12 hours.
I would like your professional advise to better by battery life.
1. Would changing my ROM to a better modified one solve my issue?
2. Is there a backround process (that is not detected my my task manager) working that I should know about?
3. Are there any tweaks (non registry) that I can do to better the life?
4. Are there any registry fixes that can be done to better the life?
5. Do third party cabs (SPB etc.) drain the battery life even if they are idle?
6. Does letting my battery fully drain and then fully charging it over and over really help the overall battery life?
FYI: I have the OEM ROM, my phone had never been Hard reseted before
I have tried all sorts of things, but I cannot manage to get my phone to last more than a day.
I would really appreciate your advise.
Thanks.
P.S please dont tell me that you people go 2-3 days without charging (that would hurt my feelings )
my kaiser lasts about 10 hours if heavily used, I mean 3G internet always on, browsing with opera mini all while listening to MP3s..
With normal usage and 3G coverage (but classic talks, not video ones) it last al least 2 days..
that's strange
Hi,
i managed to have good power after alot of research and tweaks on this forum.
-disable 3g service
-make sure no application auto-enable wifi, make sure its off.
-make sure device is set lock all buttons
on normal days with just afew calls and very little surfing, i my battery life is the same as other non-pda phones!

Default ROM sucks. The registry is setup completely ineffecient (like all M$ software) so eats capacity and battery.
Best thing to do is check the 'Kaiser upgrading' thread and compare the radio version you have with what's posted there and see if you could improver performance. I'm still on the original radio that it cam with, but trying multiple Rom's dramatically improved battery life. That and speed and performance. Their is much to gain, my friend.
I advise you read the articles about CID and SIM unlocking before attemting to flash anything.
Upgrade your radio to 1.27.12.17/32, turn off 3G and flash some clean ROM (like Q-Mobile - see in my signature )
My phone can survive now more than 3 days on normal usage. Before it could live 2-3 days max.

Just got my Kaiser yesterday. Left it to charge all night and removed it by 7:30 am. At 16:00, battery shows 14% left?!?!?!?
What the heck?
Did all the power tweaks from KaiserTweak.
Lets see how it goes without 3G and with the tweaks I did today.
ROM: 1.81.415.4 WWE
Radio 1.27.15.32
Protocol: 22.51.88.13H
it can't be stated enough how quickly your battery will die if you have your mailboxes checking for new mail 'as they come in' or 'every 5 minutes', etc. if you have important emails your expecting then turn it to those settings, but if you don't care if you get your mail only every hour then go that route - it makes a big difference in the battery life.. also make sure you have the disconnect option in kaiser tweak set on - i have mine set at disconnect after 2 minutes.. and finally, if you can get away with using edge then have your phone always set to edge and only set to 3g for web surfing - pulling down your text based email in edge and not 3g is usually a pretty negligible difference.
on a side note, i bought a 3000mAH battery for about $70.. it improves the battery life a decent amount, but the reality is is that if you use the GPS for 2-3 hours without having it plugged in while using the GPS then you can always expect the battery to be dead by the end of the day (or sooner).. if your going to use it as a GPS then have it plugged in..
its all about wifi...turn it off if not needed.
This has been discussed in many previous threads.
All the above are applicable and also get rid of any fancy today plugins that show data state (WiFi-phone) and battery condition as they are constantly running and polling the relevant devices.
You will see a VAST difference when you do that.
This took some hunting down so have documented here in case others are not already aware. The Diamond defaults to leaving 3G/GPRS data connections turned on all the time, once it has connected for the first time since turning the phone on. My battery life was terrible until I changed this to disconnect after 60 seconds - the battery life is now great.
GPRS/3G Auto-Disconnect
Just change 2 registry entries in the following part of the registry (download Resco Explorer if you need a registry editor):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\
1) Change the DWORD "CacheTime" to the number of seconds the connection should remain active (I use 60 seconds)
2) Change the String "SuspendResume" from "~GPRS" to "GPRS_bye_if_device_off" (without the quotes).
That's it. This solved all of my battery life issues.
I'll give it a try...thanks for the heads-up

Such a useless suggestion...the GPRS connection doesn't have almost any impact on the battery life if the connection is open or not.
Only if data is trasferring it makes a substantial difference, so if you are working with push mail, whatever parameters you change it is useless. Otherwise, if you browse the web like crazy, again - useless.
The battery cunsumption of this device is ****, period. they probably weren't able to stabilize the chipsed properly, since it gets hot every time you activate the display, like gaming or other features unrelated necessarilly with the Radio.
If you are using Push mail, it indeed is a useless suggestion. However, if I'm checking my train schedule in the morning, and don't do anything else except possibly cal with it, is IS a useful suggestion. Not having the connection established IS more battery efficient than not having it on. It's like making an argument that turning the phone or wifi off would NOT save battery life. Yeah, right. By the way, my device does not get hot at all, except when charging.
mmmmh on my O2 Germany branded phone this setting was already set to 60. What is the default Setting on unbranded phones? I want the GPRS Connection to stay on, as my provider charges the traffic in 10kByte steps.

They talk about GPRS not GPS if I am wrong.
GPRS does not effect much of the battery.
GPS affects alot of the battery when used.
Grtzzz
I don't see how having GPRS or push email connected all the time and not effecting the battery life. Once you have the connection open the phone/server is constantly sending/receiving packets of data back and forth(syncing) , although minimal if no email is going or coming. Yes it effects battery life big time because its using radio and cpu power. On the other hand GPS i agree it kills the battery life. period.
Thats what I mean normaly the GPRS is sleeping until you decide to go on the internet or look after the weather.
I agree when you use pushmail or other aplications which force the GPRS continuasly to activate its going to cost a lot of battery power.
But when you use it normal to look after the weather sometimes or internet sometimes you can leave it on. It will not drain your battery for life.
Grtzzz
Have to agree with daraj.
The Diamond battery gives me about 2 days of usage between recharges (I don't talk much).
If the GPRS is on (even if I'm doing nothing with the internet connection), on the other hand, the battery last barely 0.5 days.

I have GPRS on all day long, talk in the phone a couple of times a day, listen to FM radio for maybe 20mins/day and use push mail where i get maybe 20-40mail a day.
I have 1½-2 day on a fully charged battery with my Diamond. I dont find that too bad - actually a lot like my old HTC Trinity.
Battery life too bad
I had Diamond for a week. Battery life is just crap to a stage I am afraid to use it. Initially I thought that I was playing around with it thats why the battery is draining. But today I was doing a 13 hour shift I hardly used the phone except making 3 calls lasting couple of minutes each. Battery was full in the morning - charged at night. By the end of the shift the battery was down to 10-20 percent!! I was so shocked to see this. Without even using the phone, the battery just drains, I dont know why. So, disappointed with it now

I've had the phone for over a week now and to call the battery life good would be an overstatement. It is however adequate. I talk on average 1-2 hours (3G only), use poll mail (30 minute check intervals), use the browser and GPS for perhaps an average 20-30 minutes per day. At the end of the day I usually have 50-60% of the battery left. When left in standby with just the email checking, it consumes little.
Only once did I get excessive battery usage and it's an incident I can't explain. I left it overnight in standby with no programs running and the battery level dropped from full charge to 50% in the morning. It hasn't happened since.
In fact, while the battery life certainly has been inferior to my previous phone (Nokia 6210) it's much better than on my last WM phone (Mio A701). After having read reviews and user opinions I expected it to be worse. It's not good, but it is hardly disastrous.
Hello all,
I just lifted my data block from my plan and added a data package (using 3g now)
Well here is what I have noticed...
My battery is dying in a hurry, Id say twice as fast. Maybe dead in 12-14 hours in mostly stand by. It used to be more like 24-36 hours.
Anyways, I do not want to loose the data option so here is what I am wondering.
What can I do?
My thoughts are change all email accounts to only check manually? But this still leaves 3g on, likely still draining the battery??
I know I can use the Comm manager to turn off data connection and micro$oft push, but is this the best way?
I have the cab files that create a shortcut to enable/disable BT and wifi.
Is there one for 3g disable enable?
Lastly, am I going about this the best way, if not what is?
Please help and thank you.

Welcome to 3G (and HSDPA is even worse). Seriously though 12 - 14 hrs seems way to short so a little more info about your device and its setup (ROM/Radio/SPL/Battery age any additional software installed etc) would be helpful.

You are right with your ideas of only turning on extra services when needed. Things like Bluetooth, WiFi and even an unused data connection chew through the power so make the most of Comm Manager and manually check your emails unless you want to carry around a spare battery to change over when the other gets low! I have had days when I've gone through nearly 3 batteries in the one working day using a combination of lots of TomTom Navigator use, lots of MP3 playback and much Internet browsing but normally a charge will last over 1 day (certainly if the screen is off most of the time). There have been many threads about poor battery consumption with the Kaiser here so a search should yeild more ideas.
I use AEBPlus for my keyboard shortcut mappings, and it has a shortcut for "toggle network connection". Typically I press once to connect, check my mail or whatever I want to do, then press again to disconnect.
I am not sure if this is completly spot on! But there is a cab called NOGPRS (by modaco) in my cab corner. I think that would provide you whit some help on youre issue. Other than that you might consider giving other radio`s a go.
i just got my nexus, digged around, updated to cyanogen, rooted.
i have a problem that on my old touch hd i didnt have:
the data connection is always on?? doesnt android know to close it when not in use so it will save battery charge?
thank you
on the nexus one it works a little different, it shows the 3G icon but that does not necessarily mean its doing anything. only when you see the two up/down arrows lighting up and flashing is there 3G data activity going on.
i guessed that, but, it keeps the data connection open? even without transfer it still uses power, doesn't it?
it is always connected in a way, all it does is ping the cell tower every 10 minutes to have an established point on reference. this by its self does not draw to much from the battery as you would expect, only when data is requested does the radio kick in to full power, so no worries that it will drain your battery. The thing that will kill your battery the fastest is that beautiful screen. try to bump it to 60% thats i nice brightness but yet saves on battery. also keep in mind the battery needs to go through 2 or 3 battery charge cycles for you to get the most out of your battery life.
average real world battery life should get you about a day and a half of bettery.

This is how all modern smartphones work nowadays. They all keep the connections "on" 100% of the time.
It's funny because I asked this question a few years ago
The answer I got was that it actually uses MORE battery to turn the connection on and off all the time manually, than to just let it sit idle.
Also, the N1 is useless without a data connection
i see. then ill just let it open and search for an app that will tell me which app uses the most bandwidth. i only found some that tell me the total usage, not by application...
Hi there. Ive had my Nexus One for nearly a month. I barely use it but ive noticed that the battery goes down EXTREMELY fast. Looking at it right now, it says it has been unplugged for 13 hours, 11minutes, 54 seconds with 28% of battery left. Earlier today I was at 4 hours something with 48% left.
It says Cell Standby is using 35%, Phone Idle using 33%. Thats 68% of my battery and all my phone really does it sit on the desk next to me.
Why is it like this? Also, how can i make it last longer?
Thanks for all the help
Sounds like you are in a spotty coverage area. That explains why the Cell Standby is using so much battery trying to hang on to the 3G connection.
How many bars do you have? and which N1 model is it? TMO or AT&T?
Also do you use wifi?
Hi there Thanks for the reply . I actually turned my 3G off, and now just running on a 2G conection. I thought maybe it was trying to connect to 3G heaps and that was chomping through my battery. With my 2g connection right now I have full connection. Im pretty sure with 3G I was the same, maybe 1 or 2 less.
I do use Wifi, however I turned that off. Also, I live in New Zealand not America so I dont have AT&T - Not sure what TMO is.
He's referring to the version of the Nexus that you have. AT&T or T-mobile, and is a reference to the frequencies that are used, not the actual company,
Ahh ok Thanks. 900/2100 UMTS
I think you are confused about those numbers, those numbers are the amount of battery each item takes up. So Your cell standby takes up 38% of each instant your battery is running. It did not take 38% of your battery. Wifi is significatly better on battery then 2g or 3g, i would advise always use wifi when you can.
Are you using exchange push? 2.2 has a bug that if you are not rooted on a new rom can create this rapid battery drain on exchange.
I recommend getting os monitor and seeing what is taking up the load.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
This sounds really similar to what was happening to me the first week with my N1. Cell Stand by was my biggest battery killer. A few posts above has it correct.
Ironically, by turning off wifi in an attempt to save battery I caused my phone to use the cell antenna which uses more power, and takes longer to complete each task. I now leave wifi on whenever I am near my routers, and even most of the time when I am not.
Turning off live wallpapers and disabling auto updates on social networking apps can also be a big help.
Run a few 24 hour tests changing some of those factors, but generally, think about wifi as a battery saver and you should get a bit better results. Your not using exchange right?
Yep. Wifi should be a priority over network connection. Make sure you also change the wifi sleep policy to "never" (settings > wireless & networks > wifi settings > hit menu button > advanced > wifi sleep policy > never).
Also I would double check the APN settings to make sure you are using the best/latest settings for your carrier. (settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > access point names) Make sure the one selected matches the recommended settings for your carrier (you need to call your carrier or google the settings).
Other than that, maybe a reboot would help? pull and reinsert battery?
Hope that helps.
Ok Thanks for all the replies. I dont have any push notifications set to automatically update and I dont use any social networking apps. Ill turn Wi-Fi on now and even though I set it to "never" sleep - it still does when I lock the screen...but thats another problem .
Im not using any exchange push, not even sure what that is.
Cheers
Yes keep WiFi on will save you an enormous amount of battery, no question. The difference is huge for me. And your WiFi sleep policy should be set to never. If you have the bug where this setting does not work, then that stinks and you could install the new driver that fixes it. But for now you would need to be rooted until the fix is official.
I have now enabled Wi-Fi and put 3G back on. However my battery is still draining fast. It now says my Wi-Fi is using up 30+% of my battery. Im losing about 8-10% of battery every hour - Im pretty sure that isnt normal?
The other place to check is: settings->applications->running services.
See if there is something in there that you don't think should be running. Your display should be using the most battery, so it sounds like something is running automatically.

i have a similar problem with my battery i see that your on fido network like me whats the apn setting your using?
@adambenjamin: Thanks had a look. Everything that is running I want running, nothing that shouldnt be there.
@d.brown: Whats a fido network? I live in New Zealand, your flag is showing Canada - so we arent on the same network?
@everyone: So just a little update/recap. Basically my battery gets drained quite fast. Basically all my phone does is sit on the table next to me. I might send 5 or less texts a day, thats it - That will be all I do with my phone. I DONT have any push updates, no social networking. I have my brightness down to the lowest it can go.
I am on 3G, have set Wi-Fi to "never" sleep (However it does anyway).
Right now my phone has been unplugged from being charged for 8hours 24 minutes with only 45% of the battery left - I have sent two texts today and thats the ONLY time I have used my phone. My display is using 31%, Cell Standby 27% and phone idle 24% = 82%
Something I have changed recently is going from one network to another. The network I was one of the two biggest in my country (Which means it has alot of towers). I changed to another network which has been going for just over a year (Less towers). Could my battery be running down faster than normal because its harder to find a signal than before?
Also, my signal strength is -107dBm 4 asu (Absoloutley no idea what that means, but might be valuable to somebody out there who can help)
Thanks for all the help
Switch to GSM Auto (PRL) instead of WCDMA Auto. this helped battery life immensely for me. i can get to around 20 hours of moderate use usually
edit: to do this, you'll have to make a shortcut to the "phone info" activity using anycut or bettercut or another shortcut app.
once in "Phone Info", there's a drop down where you can select gsm auto (prl)
Dunno if it was mentioned, get OSMonitor (free from market) and see if Email.apk is stuck at full cpu load. It's been a problem since 2.1, it does that sometimes. If it's at more than 10%, kill it and re-launch it.
Hmm well strangley my Battery seems to be alot better now. Been on for 1day, 15hours, 23minutes and its on 73% remaining. Before it would last like 15 at most and be out. All I did was Turn W-Fi back on. Thanks everybody for there help
Been having the same issues as you, it's kinda getting annoying now.
I'm pretty much the same as you. I'll send a couple of texts a day or so, then put the phone to sleep and leave it for a couple of hours etc. No continuous usage.
From say, 8am till 9pm, I'm left with under 20% left, after EXTREMELY light usage. Sending a couple of texts and turning the screen on to check the time a few times shouldn't even be considered usage at all!
I'm just a bit envious of others who claim 2-3 days with light net browsing, a few texts etc. Thats more than me, yet they use less power.
On top of that, I'm running CM6 which includes an undervolted kernel a.k.a less power usage....ummm?
I've tried everything!
1) I've underclocked to max 384mhz when the screen is off (960 max when screen is on)
2) Wifi is usually left on
3) Data is usually turned off
4) No rogue apps detected
^
At the end of each day I check "Spare Parts" in my battery history to try and find an app that is using an abnormal amount of battery...Everythings fine.
5) Under "running services" all there is are my widget services (none data-related. eg Set Cpu widget, battery widget, Fancy Widget)
6) The screen is on auto brightness
7) Sync is off
8) GSM Auto is set instead of WCDMA preferred.
Everything!
I'm pretty much limiting the use of the phone just to make it through the day on standby.
And please, don't accuse me of someone complaining about their 12 hours, 32 minutes of "light usage" (6 hours web browsing, sync turned on, 4 hours of Angry Birds, constant calling/emailing)
I used to be able to leave my phone overnight for 8-9 hours and only have the battery go down 5-6 percent. Now its triple or more. And frustrating.
I really can't think of anything else.
From my experience, when I was running CM6 RC1, I was getting about 2 day's battery life with pershoots (pre-720p) 2.35 uv oc kernal. After upgrading to RC2, I no longer got good battery life, and I tried everything I know of with little luck.
I decided to try a new ROM and kernel. Now I am using Geo's frf91 stock deodexed blackbar v6.1 with the Stock kernel. This is now my favorite ROM/kernel combination. Try that one out and see how you run at stock levels, then maybe flash a new kernel if you want. Pershot, and Wildmonk are the local favorites, but I found them to leave me with sporadic overheating/ touch screen or reboot to X screen glitches. I would try a few days away from CM, to at least isolate some variables.
What version of CM6 are you running?
