Backpacking with the HTC Touch Diamond - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hey all.
When I go backpacking, I will be taking my HTC Touch Diamond with me. I will primarily use this for playing mp3s, and running the odd movie when i am bored.
Any ideas of a good application that will effectively use the GPS? it would be handy to be able to pick out my co-ordinates, as this will keep my mum happy when she wants to know where I am! Also, it could come in handy for finding places that I want to get to (i got lost plenty of times last time!).
Also, what sort of battery would you recommend me getting, I do not want the touch diamond to be any bigger (or much) or much heavier, if possible.
Also, do you have any suggestion of apps or uses for the diamond that will be helpful on my journey?
Also how long do you think playing mp3s will last on the diamond, or should i be looking at a real mp3 player? I will mostly be using this phone in aeroplane mode.
Cheers

one of the best programs i can recommend you is the OS map viewer. Downloadhere. This is the PC application, which has a option in it to install to a Pocket PC device (Diamond).
UK note: This version is NOT compatible with GB Ordnance Survey maps. To get the correct OS edition, please use the Web / Check for Updates command in Memory-Map Navigator
You need to buy or search google for the maps to go with it.

Batts are gonna be your #1 problem.
I suggest you focus on any kind of battery extension.
Maybe a stroll down the Diamond accessory section will shed some light.
Greets.

+1 and lots more to that!
i like the look of these.

I recommend you setup TrackMe, so your mom can take a look on a website where you currently are.
it's on xda-devs and free, works really great
For the power you need, you could take this in your backpack:
http://www.wehkamp.nl/w2/Winkelen/K...C=C09&SC=I0A&KAC=IA2&ArtikelNummer=741532#t10
It's in Dutch, but you get an idea, it carries 8000mAh so you could get a few days of GPS-sing without a powersupply

LOL, too funny Davey. I'm a Diamond owner too and you hit it pretty close to the mark. I personally wouldn't trust my Diamond out backpacking unless I had an alternative method to charge it every few hours. Even on custom roms and all that i get terrible battery life whenever I decide to use the thing.
I would suggest some type of charger to bring with you like a solar panel or something.

GPS and wifi can be damn useful when backpacking.
you now have a place to store pics, you can check your mail with wifi instead of visiting an internet cafe everyday, and with gps you can find your way in a new city. so just make sure you have all the maps on your diamond
Where are you going?
when backpacking i met a few guys who had backpacks with solar panels in them for ipods and phones.
i searched for those and its not cheap but very useful.
here's the one i saw http://www.voltaicsystems.com/

Not seen those before, nice. They're not cheap are they?
Or you could go with a big sticker saying 'mug me'.
I would go with the official extended battery plus at least 3 spares. The only problem is how to keep them cool, Li-ion batteries will permanently degrade when stored, fully charged, in hot conditions.

I bought a backpack last year with a solar panel in, if you go that route make sure you get one with a proper lithium battery pack, the one i had 4 cheap AA rechargable batteries and whatever you charge using them doesn't last very long, the lithium battery ones are a lot better, my orbit phone charge lasts around 50% less when recharging from AA's via the solar panel

i use findme along with the findme facebook app works just fine

Hey there.
Yeah its going to be really good, I have set up Skype on it as well, although it does lag quiet a bit sometimes unfortunately. I will be going to Malaysia > Cambodia > Laos > Thailand > Myanmar > Indonesia
I am interested in downloading (paying if i have to) maps onto my phone, so if ever needed, i can see where i am. If you can help me source software for this i could be grateful!
As for GPS tracking, I need something ideally that will work well while abroad. By this I mean that I can not afford large data bills (priced at £7 per megabyte while roaming!). I was perhaps looking for something where i could press a button, it would get a fix on the satalite, and send my co-ordinates either via email or sms, most likely sms as i get 10 free a day while abroad. It does not need to be real time tracking, just once a day position update. This will be a massive bonus, as my mum will relax abit more knowing exactly where i am in the world, instead of a vague answer.
As for batteries, I think i dont want to take too much stuff of value, and obviously where i am going its going to be very humid, so i cant have loads of charged batteries. Perhaps I will opt for a usb solar charger, or equivelent.
Many thanks for your help
Gary.

Unlock HTC Diamond with iSmartSim 2008 (pictures)

Just got my hands on recently arrived iSmartSim 2008, the whole process took less than 5 minutes, just wanted to confirm it worked fine:
1) A Diamond locked to Orange and iSmartSim

2) Had to cut my O2 sim card (does not affect anything, just make sure you wrote down your sim card number somewhere), and slid it in over isim, tested first on an expired O2sim card (can also be seen on the picture)
Switched on, and voila, using O2 now !
Quite simple reusable solution costing 7 USD and does not affect your warranty too ..

cant see why not .. I am still alive, wasnt hit by lightning yet
Seems to work on all phones but I've read that this thing uses more battery so it could be a serious issue given the crappy battery the Diamond has.

Excellent post hertc - I've just sent for one of these because Orange signal is dreadful at my house, but O2 is very strong. It also means I won't have to mess about porting numbers etc. Looking forward to receiving my little gizmo!

I am fully charging it at the moment, will monitor battery-level indicator once finished ..
Just speaking from common sense here, I can't really see why it would affect battery life significantly, on level with BT, GSM, GPS or screen for example, it is just a small chip, not doing any energy consuming transmissions .. and, presumably, is only used once when you access sim card (start up, sms, calls) .. but I am not a technical guy here .. will see

Updated the pictures ..
Nail scissors .. )) It's quite easy to cut, there is enough space to practise as the native chip only takes half of the space.
Fitting it in was a slight problem, I found it was a bit easier to insert the iSim half way through first, and then apply your operator sim over, slowly moving both with a finger to the end of the slot.
can't see pictures..me new to this whole forum.. do i have to look in the same post or somewhere else...
this definitely works, and doesnt seem to have affected the battery performance. definitely worth the $4.
It works! Hallelujah!
Just got my i-smart from e-bay supplier - cut a notch out of my O2 sim, slapped the card and i-smart in and voila! One unlocked phone! Absolutely brilliant. Top piece of kit. Get one now!
Plus my Orange sim works in my XDA Orbit, so I've got two phones now...

OK, used it for 2 days now, still 70% .. not extensive usage though, - a couple of calls / texts, weather data download, alarm, calendar. I think it was the same before applying the isim ...
Sounds good - no massive battery drain while that little chip sends all your data back to their control room.....
Or am I being slightly paranoid here?
this is quite a big battery drain, wouldn't really recommend it.

I did not notice any change in battery life (used for 1.5 weeks without and over a week with issim now), charging every 2-3 days at the moment ..

My Kaiser/Tilt from ebay (Are all Kaisers like this?)

Alright here are some key things I need to fix on my "excellent condition" kaiser..........
I apologize in advance as I need to vent a bit But any help/advice would be much appreciated.
1. Battery life is pretty bad, lets say if I leave just the screen on, it drains about 1-5% per minute. Meaning I have to keep it plugged in whenever I am not using it. (I have SPB Shell which is supposed to drain batteries a bit more... Can't be this bad though...)
2. Camera does not function whatsoever, all I get is a neat black screen with a laggy camera interface for some reason. (Previous owner flashed to WM 6.1, possible cause?)
3. I think I've had about three successful calls in around 2 weeks of using the phone, every other call it appears I have answered it, but I hear nothing and neither does the other person. At this point I reboot and try to call the person back, so I only use the Kaiser for texting. (Also due to the flash perhaps?)
4. No idea how to work the GSP, so far it only works when I have a wifi connection with google maps (no data plan) and when it does it only give me a very rough general location, basically it shows me that I'm somewhere in my neighbourhood. Don't know if there is a standard program included (without monthly fees) or I have to find 3rd party software, or pay monthly fees for the one included which I'm not going to do.
Other problems....
5. The sliding hinge is very loose, the gap between the screen and keyboard when slid closed is at least 1mm wide normally.
6. The tilting has a hard time staying tilted, I always keep a finger behind the screen and the back of the keyboard.
7. Dpad & face buttons are loose and can slide around a bit.
8. The screen orientation gets confused fairly often and stays in landscape mode, requiring reset.
9. The AT&T animated bootup logo is <expletive>. I reset the Kaiser very often from crashes, dead calls, wrong orientation, broken camera, and dead batteries and the bootup animation very cleverly include sounds so everyone around can hear me reboot my piece of <expletive> 7 times a day even though I have it set to mute.
10. I am very disapointed how MS still has such a hard time making a proper os suitible for a mobile phone and just how little they have improved since my old WM2003se phone and Dell Axim, they clearly have the most experience yet they still cannot see how lame their OS really is compared to the... sigh... iphone, get your act together MS... Please? Keep your superior compatibility and excellent user created/custom community but please, please, ditch the lame archaic UI, its that easy. The real problem I have is that even all the fancy mods in the world cannot hide how ugly and user unfriendly this windows mobile OS is, heres hoping WM7....
11. And I thought my HTC Magician was a large phone..........
You Poor Guy
Wow that sucks for you, sounds like not only did the flashing of the rom was bad or a bad rom(unfinished), and like the phone has been taken apart and was not put together correctly. My tilt is great I got WM6.5 and the new SBP Shell 3.0, No problems here at all. You need most likely depending on your experience is to take it apart and tighten all screws make sure the camera is plugged in and sound like the dpad buttons might need some super glue to hold the frame (of the buttons) to the case.
Then just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
when your done go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
Try a Hard Reset so you can start clean and go from there.
And remember

It sounds like the camera and call issue is caused by an incorrect ROM / raido match. Try flashing a new ROM and radio meant for eachother. For the loose parts, find a disassembly guide, A T5, T6, and 00 screwdriver and take the phone down so you can retighten the mechanism.
hmm thanks for all the help! looking at the rom/radio forum, how exactly do you decide which rom or radio to go with? seems like there are so many to choose from, I feel like such a noob even though I have flashed my ds and my old axim before i'm not entirely sure what these roms are, pre loaded/updated os's or something??
I agree though it looks like a bad rom/radio, Ill see what I can do about that and the loose parts...
Yeah this is the first time I got burnt with ebay, sucks cuz i had a few options but i went with the seller with the best communication as the others weren't replying, then i finally got a reply from a cheaper phone that seemed to be a much better choice hours later, after that i had a bad feeling and unfortunately it came true... oh well, this phone is a lot fatter and heavier than i hoped, i dunno i swore to get a smaller phone than my magician... meh either way i'll make do with what i have, sigh... thanks again.

More than an iPad alternative; TEGA Touch!

Hi guys
If you are looking for a Tablet Touch Screen,
If you are fine with Windows,
If you don’t want a bigger phone than the smart phone you already have, but something having more power and functionality
If you want to keep using your USB memory stick to transfer you last holidays photos because 4Go in Bluetooth takes time…
If you want to arrive at your mate house, a join the network without having to enter credential, and just by plugging an Ethernet cable to the router.
If you want to chat with a webcam
If you want 3G
If you want to be able to display on an external screen (working with Excel on 10” ??, no thanks)
If you are clever enough for multitasking
If you want to be able to get 1 or 2 Gb of Ram
If you want to be sure that your not buying an under configured device, just because some marketing guy want you to buy a “v2.0” in a year.
And if you don’t want to break the piggy bank for all that
Well don’t get an iPad, get something else, something like a TEGA Touch.

I just find that Tablet looking for iPad alternative.
Weighting just 1 kilo, and for price starting at AU$1,086.8, I was pleased to see that for such price, there is an iPad alternative containing
With these specs in the box, you can expect to do what you are normally doing with a computer, not only surfing on the web and read e-book.
I can see easily how the specifications of the TEGA Touch will suit me.
- Sick, working from home? Fed up about being seated in the living room doing a power point for your boss. Transfer all the files on your slate (thanks USB port), grab your slate, go on the couch and keep working with just a stylus. Using PDF, Excel, Internet, eMail at the same time to make your presentation. No worries, you can multitask… The presentation is getting huge (100Mo), no worries, you have 2Gb of Ram.
- Back from holidays? 30Gb of photos to transfer (thanks again USB) and classify… And doing that, you like to get multiple photos open at the same time, so after applying gamma and contrast corrections you can pick the best ones. Well 2Gb of Ram and Multitasking is for you.
- Cooking dinner at home? You just want to listen to internet radio while checking recipes on the net, well, multitasking is for you again.
Does that look far from what you’re doing all the time with your computer? No too far really, this is why I’ll prefer to get a Tega than a iPad.

I bought Smartwatch 3 days ago, i confirm that it works well, without any problem. Don't have any bluetooth disconnection, notifications work "in time", battery is as it should be, fully charged it on day 1, no need to plug in again at the moment.
Need more time to test it and keep my opinion to say if it's really stable and a good product.
Regarding my phone's battery, when i check battery stats, Smartwatch use 4% so i think it's reasonable.
Sony Smartwatch
Just to let others know I have now had this watch a little under a week.....My impression so far is good.....it does exactly what it says it will .......with NO disconnections(unlike its predessecor the live view which always lost the connection and barely worked). All programs work well and the device speed is surpisingly good too(switching between screens and widgets etc). My only complaint is brightness there is no way to set it and in daylight it is hard to read the screen.
I got my sony smartwatch 6 days ago and the last charge was 4 days ago. So no problem with the battery. Yes the screen does come on when i shake it which is pretty convenient i think.
Sony's watch is more of a remote viewer and notifier. It doesnt use its own android system it uses the phones i think so it may not be fair to compare it to other smart watches that have android running on them. It is a lot cheap than others at the moment.
I'm using it with a Xperia S and the bluetooth only uses 3%. If i have all the notification it can do turned on then it only lasts 14 hours. With just text and email its managing 30 hours quite nicely
Hope this helps anyone.
just a quick question sir, how do you set the screen brightness? i've looked everywhere but yet to locate the settings?

Pebble is ridden with deceptive marketing.
For example, "e-paper" display? Please do not confuse with e-ink display.
The "e-paper" display is just regular black and white pixel LCD (not different from those already in use in today's digital watches).
And now let's look at what is inside a pebble shall we?

- CPU: STM32F205RG (120MHz)
- RAM: 128KB
- Flash: 1MB (For firmware only, apps are stored on the phone, not on the watch like pebble)
- OS: uC/OS-II
- BlueTooth: Yes (3.0)
- Fm Radio: Yes (disabled)
- LCD: 1.3" OLED
- Res: 128 x 128
- Touchscreen: Yes (Capacitive)
- Brushed Aluminium housing
- Battery - 110mAh
Just looking at the cost of components alone (let's ignore the fact that Smartwatch already has hundred of apps while the pebble can only display one notification at a time and has a silly snake game as an app...), Smartwatch is a better choice by far.
The curious part of it is they use the exact same processor.

Yea people who just do regular music listening a bit of browsing , calls dont need this as the stock battery easily gets throug the day , but may be of use for travellers and heavy gamers,,
Thanks for posting, I have similar on my GSIII LTE from day 1.
Very handy.
I hope it will be available in Europe for the GNII.
How do you get to the s-pen?

A lot of these cases have an extra silo. But it would probably defeat the purpose of the sound and spen detection setting.
I think I'm going to have this phone for awhile so I can wait another couple of weeks for one that has the s-pen slot. I find myself using it at the most random of times.
Not only dose it seen to cover the S pen but also the back speaker.
I bought a second battery from Samsung website with the 50% off code someone posted here. I haven't needed it yet, but on the rear occasion I do it will be a simple solution. For now I just switch them out every few days.
All ,
yes its a bit annoying for removing the Spen but not very difficult for people who rarely use ( i use all the time though ) it covers up the space , however speaker is not compromisd as there is a opening for the speaker , but yes S pen is a bit annoying to remove as you will need to slide the fone out .. this s not a hard case so not a tough job to open the phone up from the case...
Might get one of these if they make a little higher quality product with little lower price. Hate the LED lights, on/off switch, no hole for stylus. Most of these need to be charged separately and are usually less than 1000mah.

yea the LEDs are bit too bright , but I found the battery pretty decent not excellent though they charged my phone fom 49% to 100 % in about 1 hour not sure if it can full 3000 MAH havent tested that , the stylus missing out is defnitely a disadvantage...
I was just about the post this, found it on ebay for 28. But no spen and yes the speaker which is covered up was the deal breaker for me. Guess I'll just wait for Samsung's wireless charging.

I have (well had, untill I dropped and shattered the screen) the T-Mobile version of the Note 2, and last week, was on holidays at Disney etc.. the day started at about 8 am, and then, I'd use it non stop, navigation, web browsing, phone calls... really put the phone to use and by the end of the day, still had citca 35% left - this is the first Android smartphone I've had where I'm comfortable with the battery life. the stock battery is more than man enuff for the phones features.
Anyone find a better charging case than this?
