Love the VGA screen, but to no fault of its own, the googlemaps and ms maps aren't made to display on it. It doesn't zoom in enough (well to some extent the qvga had that issue) and the street names come out micro in size. Example, you zoom in as far as you can, you'll see a thin yellow line in the middle of the stree with very small street name. In qvga its a larger yellow line with a larger readable street name.
Can this be fixed in some way by software, or only by having google and MS correct it on their end?
Agreed!
I did a post asking if Live Search Mobile was VGA compatible for the same reason, ven when zoomed in all the way, the VGA screen rendering makes it almost impossible to read the street names. To me it makes Live Search almost unusable for map / navigation.
Maybe there is a software solution that would allow us to zoom in outside of program parameters, since many Winmo applications are not VGA optimized?
These programs perform exactly as intended on VGA, the problem is not that they don't account for VGA, the problem is they don't account for a VGA screen with such a small size
Indeed what you want is something i've wanted for some time, ability to zoom in on screen but not on the map, so that you keep the same resolution tiles but scale them up.. unfortunatly neither MS nor google have felt it important enough to implement
Side note that the fonts look great on my 4 inch VGA iPAQ..
In the short term maybe we can remove the hi_res_aware resources from the .exe and have it load up in 320x240 pixel doubling mode.. that would make the text nice and large.. look ugly though..
No. its the program. They did NOT take into account a vga screen. I can compair my tilt and Fuze. As I zoom closer on my tilt, the yellow line for the street gets a bit wider and street name is larger. and I can zoom in to about a block.
note: Go back 6-7months ago and I could zoom in to just about my house. about 1-2 times zoom closer. Now I get a max zoom at anything closer.
On the Fuze, I can't get closer than 2+ blocks and the words are micro. If they took into account the VGA screen, they would allow a closer zoom (technically I should get to the same zoom as a qvga, just that mine MIGHT look a little more blocky).
I was hoping this would be a fix for VGA screens, but I believe its the way google and MS is handling how close you zoom. technically they could allow you to zoom untill you see blocky pixels of the ground, but they stop the zoom at one point, and on a vga screen, thats like 2-4 times farther back.

Opera Mobile 9.5 on the Diamond has a feature that fits the length of the sentence to fit the screen's width, when you zoom in.
The problem is that this feature doesn't always work for me, and I don't know what is the reason sometimes it work and other times not.
For example, one time I search in Google and the results fit the screen excellently (no matter how much zoom I use). And on a different occasion doing the *same* google search exactly, produces results that do not fit the screen.
Is it possible that the auto fit feature is not activated before the page has been completely loaded, and sometime it doesn't load completely ?
I have the same issue
I have the same issue
I would really like to control this feature
hope someone can do it

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed that occassionally (and seemingly more and more frequently) pictures that I take with the camera are either incorrectly saved in the wrong orientation or are being displayed in both the TF3D tab and the HTC album in the wrong orientation.
In other words, in HTC Album, when I hold the phone in portrait mode, the picture shows in landscape and when I rotate the phone to landscape, it switches to upside-down portrait mode. It's like chasing your tail! Really frustrating! It also displays landscape pictures in portrait and vice-versa in the TF3D tab as you flip through the photos.
This doesn't happen with every picture, but I can't seem to figure out any pattern that would illuminate the cause of the problem.
Am I alone in this? (I have a Euro Diamond)
You Are Not Alone!!
I have been having the exact same problem, and its becoming more and more frequent!
It is fustrating tho because when you are holding the phone in a portrait position and you have a landscape picture, you instinctively try and the phone sideways to see the picture straight....but this just turns the picture so your looking at it the wrong way again!
Its weird how some pictures arent affected and some pictures which are taken right after the non affected pictures are affected!
try to make sure your device is fully upright, perpendicular to the floor. i have a feeling your g sensors are not calibrated and your devices are confused with odd angles. give 'er a try and post results
Yeah, I've experienced this too.
Are you guys using the Gsen app cos I'm wondering if it's that which is having an effect?
Just in case you don't know, you can edit them so they show the right way round using Pictures & Videos in Programs, just select the offending pic and select edit from the menu, then rotate and then just hit ok in the top right corner once you have it the way you want.
I have this problem and it is very annoying, I have the HTC 1.93 ROM and don't use GSen (at the moment). It would be great to find a solution to this problem.
I think this is just a major design flaw in the HTC picture viewer. It's one of the major reasons I use other software instead.
Having the g-sensor enabled in a photo application is just f*#&ing stupid IMO. It totally fails to handle the fact that people often rotate the camera when they take photos. Most people find it easier to rotate the viewer rather than mess about with image editing ... but when they try, the g-sensor f*#&s it up for them.
It's tragic and funny seeing my friend (who still uses the HTC software) having to bend his neck right the way over to view his own photos. And what is with the inability to change the sorting behavior?!!

I think this might be because when you're taking a picture, you should be holding the phone in landscape mode, when you take a picture in portrait mode your phone will rotate the picture like that.. i ALSO had that problem. try it and let me know
Are you using G-Sen?
If you have had G-Sen on then toggled it off, photos will be in the wrong orientation.
If you do a soft-reset without g-sen loaded, pictures are taken correctly.
Solution: if you are using g-sen, make sure it is toggled on before you take a pic.
That's what i found works for me anyway.
I have the exact same situation. But the photos weren't taken with the Diamond, and I have more than a hundred of those. They are, for the greatest part of it, taken in landscape mode and it thinks they are in portrait mode.
Is there a way to change their orientation massivly ? I mean it would take me a life to rotate them one by one.

Place a very large mass next to the diamond, in order to confuse it about which way is down.
It'll be much quicker to alter the orientation on your desktop pc - but it'll have to be a manual one-by-one job. AFAIK, there's no way to do it automatically because it's impossible for any software to know which way up each photo is supposed to be.
Or just use a better viewer without stupid g-sensor usage.
Edit: Another thought... if you change the orientation of some of your pictures (after taking them) then you'll find that they're out of order in the album because the time/date stamps have changed! 3rd party software really is the way to go! /rant
ok, it's been a month, i just found this thread. i have the touch pro but having the same problem. the htc is calibrated just fine. anyway to fix it? htc is so notorius for bugs, can't believe that one slipped.
any better touch oriented album viewer to replace the htc album app? also, would the camera app know to switch to other album prg or always insist of this damn buggy album prg ?
thanks
I just downloaded / installed live search mobile, and noticed on the maps, no matter how much you zoom in, you cannot read the street names very well because they are rendered so small. This is even at maximum zoom.
Any suggestions or solutions?
Besides get glasses
I have the same complaint. I can read the directions part just fine, but not any of the street names.
Ditto. There are a few threads on this now, and none of them so far have any answers. Street name font size is too small, unreadable, in both Google Maps and Live Search Mobile on the Fuze / Raphael / Touch Pro.
Send feedback! Complain to the people who can actually do something!

I did em the LS team, but kudos for posting that e-mail address. I hope anyone else who's having this issue with the Fuze and Live Search will e-mail them too. LS for VGA! ;-)
Not sure what you mean
I have WLS version 3.5.8198.0 on my Fuze, and when I'm zoomed down to the street level on a map, the street names are perfectly clear. Remarkably so, in fact. Do you have this version?
I can zoom in all the way, but as soon as the screen is rendered, the text is WAY to small to read. It is just not displaying properly for VGA resolution.
Text is too small for me too.
Its perfectly readable but NOT WHEN DRIVING!

Yes. Sorry, I should've specified the version. I too am using WLS version 3.5.8198.0 on the Fuze. Yes, the fonts are stunningly clear; that's the new 480x640 VGA screen for ya! Love it. It's great, actually, when you're viewing the map zoomed out, i.e. for an entire county or state; much more detail than Google Maps. But when you zoom in, the fonts stay at the same microscopic 4-point size. So, impossible to read while driving -- certainly if the phone's clipped to the dashboard, a foot or two away. And there's no need for the fonts to be so tiny at full zoom; the screen's basically empty. It should be a simple fix; the street-name font size should increase as you zoom in. I've e-mailed the WLS team to this effect, and encourage anyone else who's interested to do so too; their address is:

Google Maps has the same microscopic font issue. Though thanks for informing me of the street view update. WTF is with google not auto-informing users of updates? There is also no one step update function. Google is really dropping the ball lately. Apparently they are more interested in drinking wheat grass juice than they are at making their apps easy to use.
Hey Guys,
Does anyone know if google will be releasing google earth for the touch pro/diamond? I can only assume the reason they hadn't yet developed google earth for windows mobile because there wasn't any phones that were strong enough to run it. Well, pretty sure our phones can run this now.
The iphone has it as does android at least I think android does.
Here's a link to the ap for the iphone.
http://www.google.com/mobile/apple/earth.html
Hopefully they have already developed it and its just a matter of releasing it. I used it on my fiances iphone and its awesome! Take not I am NOT talking about googlemaps.... I'm talking about google earth!
What is wrong with satellite view and the search option of Google Maps??
They (google/ms) need to fix VGA support b4 releasing a new program. I cant standit how small the roads and texts come out. Also, you can't zoom in as far as you could in a nonvga screen. And no, its not a VGA issue. If google wanted to, they could zoom in ALOT more, just that the picture would be pixelated. But they actually stop the ammount of zoom.

Hmm, I have the same zoom levels on my pc as I have on my Raphael.
(comparing them at this moment, it's just the screen size that makes a difference, the area shown on a 23" is much larger )
Well with google earth on the iphone it actually uses the accelorometer so when you tilt the phone the picture will actually tilt on the phone too. It's pretty neat. You can see that feature in the video on that page. Regardless I just would like google earth on the PPC as opposed to google maps.
Hmm, I guess this is my first post. And I'm not even sure if it's the right forum for it, though considering the issue comes from the huge screen resolution from the TD2, it may be the correct forum.
Anyway, I love my TD2. It's my first smartphone and even though it cost me €405, I don't regret buying it.
I'm using it a lot for my studies though, and I like using the wikipedia/wapedia.mobi. Thing is that Opera apparently doesn't manage very well image size when he resize the page with the mobile view; I'm getting images bigger than what they should be and much more pixelised; therefore when I browse mathematics related pages, I have to scroll horizontally to view the whole formula... which isn't really practical. The same happens with IE, plus the browser being unpractical.
Anyway, would you know any way to reduce for example all images in a page by 25 or 50% in a mobile browser (if you know one that can do it, it would be great)?
It would be too bothersome to download the pages on my computer and manually resize images and correct the html tags
Thanks in advance,
lnky
This has been irretating me too. Also, I think that the font size often i way too big even when I zoom out as much as possible. But I guess there is no easy fix for this.
I've been checking the opera configuration file, though I'm not sure if the "scale" or "skin scale" or even the "Image.css" work :/ I've tried various settings...

I have no idea what you mean by this. Could you give me a URL to see on my phone what you are talking about. Opera for my has sized all pages like they do on my laptop. No pictures have been pixelized ever except when I zoom in all the way.
i like Opera but on a WVGA screen give Iris a shot- it's a simple browser and it's good for sizing. torchmobile.com free- and it uses the iphones webkit engine so everything has that iPhoney feel

Me neither. Could it be that the websites mentioned have mobile-specific CSS styles that would cause the pixellation you mention?
