hello everyone.
i am the new proud (debatable) owner of the htc touch diamond gadget (cause thats what it is - a glorified phone).
before the diamond i had (and still do) a 1st generation iphone.
some of the issues with the iphone that made me get the diamond are:
- no bluetooth file transfer
- no flash (ya i know the diamond has no flash but no problem)
- loses network connectivity a lot! (currently on 2.2)
- no sms message forwarding
- the interface is really annoying ... screw apple's design. i find it very lame and very unfriendly
Now. ... being that the diamond has (1)wm6.1 and (2) a smaller screen i'd expect the developers to englarge the fonts / dialog boxes... but no they made everyone so damn time that even when i try to tap with my pinkly finger i cant get accurate results.
Problem 1
from the first time and until now whenever i do screen calibration it makes me go through the darn thing like 3 or more times. i am hitting the stupid cross right in the center .. i dont know if its not regestering it or not. i also have to apply lots of pressure... its frustrating.
Problem 2
being that i live in the middle east i require an arabic keyboard.
thank God HTC provided an arabic firmware that has the keyboard and the fonts. no more paying extra.
the problem is: the arabic keyboard is VERY tiny.
the english keyboard on the other hand comes in all varities and is beautiful ...
is there no way to make the arabic keyboard bigger ???
other than those two issues everything else is A ok. (for now)
Thank you!
as far as i am concerned in relation to problem 1..it can be furstrating sometimes, when you tap the screen hold on to the cross till it starts moving and then follow...try to get used to it. It is pretty basic
in relation to number 2...Be patient it has only been out a while and I am sure one of the boys is working on it...I would suggest you to start a new thread requesting bigger arabic keyboard and some will tune in
Finger or stylus?

...are you hitting the cross with your finger, 'cos the screen calibration is designed for the stylus - this hasn't changed from the early days. Come to think of it, neither has the boring calculator UI... thank you XDA!!

Hi all,
First off, my first post here, so be gentle .
I'm looking for a keypad or keyboard to install on my Vario III so that I can type SMSes with one hand whilst on the London Underground. As good as the keyboard is, it requires two hands to be usable.
I've used the HTC Diamond keypad / keyboard pack that's on these boards, and another one after following a rabbit hole, and although they do as I want, they removed another functionality: Whilst typing on the real keyboard, I lost the word/ name suggestion box whilst typing! I find this box very useful, not least in the names section, and don't want it gone.
So, in brief, can you guys recommend a one-handed keypad for SMSing, which doesn't lose that word suggestion box functionality?
Many thanks guys!
Hi,
I tried thumbkey but it is a little buggy
Touchpal (especially the last Version, 3.0) is perfect for me...
Hi szdavid,
just had a little go on touchpal now using the trail version, and although the suggestion box was there, I'm more of an 'oldie' when it coems to texting i.e. dislike T9 or any predictive texting, and it took a couple of different areas to get one char up (choose the button, then the character).
I'll try the other one once I get up tomorrow. Thanks though, and any other suggestions out there?
If I were you, I would get the Touch Diamond Keypad.
It is just like it is on a regular phone. I will attach the CAB as well as the other Touch Diamond Keyboard.
The .CAB in this attachment is all 3 Touch Diamond Keyboards. 1 is Qwerty and 1 is the Keyboard and the other is the Keypad.

I've tried that one, and I loved it, except for the fact that I lost the suggestion box above the cursor, which is important to me (which is why I uninstalled it).
Is there something like that, except without the loss of that functionality, please?

did you hit the ABC<->T9 toggle button second in from the left on the bottom row, it seems to give me exactly what you want..
I running the qwerty keyboard for info !!!
tengo thumb gets my vote.
http://www.tengo.net/tengo_thumb.html
I might try that Tengo one, and Jerwick, I did press that button, but it still didn't give me back the suggestion box.. I'm not sure you know which one i mean...
I think it's the keypad /board's own predicter that's causing the problem and stopping the cursor suggesttion box...
any tips?
I do know what you are talking about. On some occasions, it doesn't work for me either. It has some flaws- but other than that, it's about as basic as you can get.
pie, I never got it to work unfortuneatly, and I guess I use the inline thingy mor than the one-handy thingy
guess that means that there isn't one with the same great functionality as that diamond one, then
ive actually started using the full keyboard one handed. slide it out and type with one hand, its hard to get used to.

You're good, I can barely type on the Tilt keyboard sitting on the table with cut fingernails. I just can't get used to the feel, travel, feedback..... something.
OH, ANd THis ANoys ME TOo if I type too fast.
Right now, I'm using the resco keyboard which has already been mentioned.
I was wondering if there was one similar to that with bigger buttons? It would make texting while doing other stuff much easier using both thumbs.
Sometimes hitting the right key with the resco board is difficult as well.
Coudl we get the Diamond keyboard .CAB on another server? Please, we cant access megaupload in this country.

its in my signature under Cabs, Keyboards
There is nothing better than the Touchpal once you learn to use it period.
-McMex
Touchpal is the best for me hands down...
It offers several input methods ranging from QWERTY to T9...
And you can skin it very easily.

It's been on my 4shared the entire time.
it seems like there are a lot of avodcates for the touchpal one, which I did like, but wasn't entirely happy with...
I might end up with it because it's the nest of the lot that I've been recommended, that and maybe the resco one
+1 TouchPal for me
Seeing as quite a few people here have a Diamond, i just wanted to ask how easy is it to text using the on screen keyboard. I usually text with 2 hands, find it easier and much faster but after looking at various videos i still cant seem to figure out that 2 handed texting is not a problem for this unit. I have an ipod touch which is like the iphone but texting on that is a pain as i keep pressing the wrong button...so when replying to emails on the ipod...its quite a struggle to fire off a quick email etc.
So can anyone tell me if 2 handed texting is easy on this device??
Thanks.
2hand sms'ing is easy enough on all touchscreen devices using input types such a phonepad
Have a look on this article http://mobilitytoday.com/news/008586/htc_diamond_texting
i personally think 2 hand typing on the diamond is too hard, the device is too small for this, it works ok on internet browsing having the device in landscape as the onscreen keyboard is bigger. i use the default keyboard (2 letters per key) with my thumb, im suprised at how quick im getting with it! If its essential to you id wait for the HTC with the thumb board or the X1

Hmmm thats what i was thinking...im more and more leaning towards the X1 now...i like the Diamond but i dont think im going to get on with it to be honest. Although im waiting for the official uk stock to come in, so i might pick one up to play with and see how i get on with it in a real life scenario.
Hello all, I work for Orange and hopefully will get preferential rates when its released (hopefully early July)
1)I REALLY hope Orange don't put their home screen on instead of the touchflo3d...that would be a really big mistake
2)BATTERY LIFE! I'm thinking...Anyway of linking clicking Opera app to enabling 3G? Maybe making a custom shortcut containing the reg change for 3g on + opening browser? Or is this me being a little too hopeful/ignorant?
3)Music player: Apparently, to all intents and purposes, not that great. Are there any players 3rd party available that are any good? Music playing is something I like the idea of but I don't deal with album art at all so I'm stuck if I use the default.
4)Instant Messaging;
I know WM supports Windows Live, but does it easily support the 640x480 screen? I've heard some 3rd party apps go a bit funny on it (same in fact with the music player)
Also, what is the status with the xs in the top right these days? I had a SPV M700 and x just minimised. You could get a software mod for the x to close, but I'm going to want to be running IM on a fairly regular occasion, obviously multitasking. Is there a "minimise key" mod? To make more similar to desktop experience?
5)I predominantly text, how am I going to find the touch keyboard? It was SO awkward on my M700, is the keyboard functionality/touch sensetivity much improved?
OK Thankyou all in advance,
qpop

I cant help much but in response to the question above, I find the texting overall is pretty good on the Touch Diamond.
Im a texter to and ive used lots of Windows Mobiles in the past and can safely say that the Phone Keypad and Also Full Qwerty are excellent. The Phone Keypad is what I use the most when texting etc and its brilliant.
I dont often type things incorrectly but the downside is, with all touch screen phones ive used so far, that sometimes it doesnt keep up and i do find that when I press the space button it doesnt register (or I dont push the button exactly so it doesnt register more like) but the whole experience, overall, feels good when texting.
Also you have to be careful when texting and then choosing a word in the T9 system as it will repeat the word if you press the wrong part of the screen or it will insert the word in the middle of another word.
This is something im doing less and less of now as ive got used to the sensitivity of the screen so all good.
Best so far on a purely touchscreen Windows Mobile Device. Nice one HTC!
Ok so this is actually my first time posting in a long time. i do regularly flash the great roms on this site and use the cabs that are presented here. wonderful work guys.
ok so my question is, is it possible for someone to write some software for some widgets like the ones on the new Samsung I900? I know that it runs off WM 6.1 Pro. But is the today screen widget system a flash program? or built in somehow? it would be so cool to have something like that on the today screen of my 6.0 kaiser. ive seen so many different UIs its hard to name them all. they are all pretty cool in their own ways, but if someone made this as a cab that would be awsome. i know someone will be dumping the I900 rom sometime soon. hopefully!!!!
thanks,
vince
i dont get it, so nobody thinks this is possible? any takers....bueller...bueller...
Two suggestions...
Link to what you're asking about so someone can possibly make comparisons.
Don't be annoying/insulting.

riiight... i wasnt trying to be annoying or insulting. i figured a quick search on youtube wuold have informed anyone about the phone in question. seems simple enough to me.
well. the Omnia I900 is a new phone that is being put out by Samsung. If you watch the video posted above youll see the widgets that i am talking about. they seem to be flash based. sort of like the ones in vista. i wonder about how much memory they take up. the phone has some other cool things as well like the screen rotate transitions. i love the one from this device. hope some programmers here can chime in on this one.

Apart from the dragging and dropping of widget from the sidebar, everything else is able to be reproduced on wm6 using various methods. rlToday and MobileShell are starting points. The i900 is not that great of a phone.
I figured out the Widgets app is called TouchWiz. i was wondering if anyone has been able to make a cab out of this? i would probably use it if it were available. ive tried a lot of shells, launchers, plugins, they are all cool but none seem to be the end all OS-replacement. by that i mean that they cant do everything yet. some will do some things good and others do other things good, but none do everything good! i know its a lot to ask for from just a shell, but if the next iphone (not 3g version) is any good with a 3rd party following thats growing, i might jump on. its gonna take some great plugs and an awsome os update to keep me on the windows mobile wagon.
i really wish they would start to try and move away from teh stylus usage on their future OS versions. like the Omnia. this would make alot of people happier i think.

-Price - Currently over $1,100 in Australia vs. TyTnII free on most caps. Ouch.
- Poor finger menu navigation. Like most WM6 devices, the underlying OS is designed for stylus use, not thumbs. Comes with a stylus but no slot to put it in the phone.
- No physical keyboard, and dodgy software keyboard which cover 3/4 of the screen making it impossible to see what your typing underneath.
- Haptic touch is cool, but the glossy body is really bad (good?) at collecting fingerprint smudges. Carrying a cloth all day is pretty lame too.
- Battery life is ok, except when using GPS or 3G/HSDPA- reports of going from 100% to fully flat in under 40 mins while using satnav & about 3 hrs talk time on 3G. Cant personally verify this because I only played in-store for about half an hour - google around though..
- Can't use it as a bluetooth HSDPA modem for laptop/PC. Even my 5 yr old nokia can do this..
- Annoying automatic screen orientation, way too sensitive when you moving your arm around and the screen starts freaking out and spinning.
- Reports of random shut downs. Cnet reviewer had 2 in 3 days & pressing the Power On button does not help - have to physically remove and re-insert the battery to reset it.
- Useless "widgets" - Stock ROM does not include Calendar, Messaging or mainstream apps. Like the nazi-esque licensing for the iphone app store, you're not allowed to add / develop non-Samsung-approved apps. So for the time being you have a fancy looking but useless desktop. Standard WM6 "today" screen & various plugins is much much more usable.
Bottom line is its fashion over function. Some will love it, but there's too much iPhone mentality going on to even consider it for folks like me (I like to tweak and fiddle with everything to make a system that suits me perfectly - way better phones already out that can do this easier (TyTnII, imho) )
I do like the camera though, and the weird not-quite-VGA 240x400 resolution.
I agree. I am not interested in flashing a new ROM but would rather customize a few features usings cabs and so forth.
There are some widgets that I would like to use myself. This is very similar to the Vista sidebar that I have become familiar with and appreciate now.
Hi,
i found the related widgets, on rapidshare or megauload.it works fine
on a Qvga pda, but on mine (I780) i have resolution problems
Bye
Herc.
yeah i found a thread in the general-hacking and development section where someone has already made a cab for the widgets. after installing you have to reset your device for them to appear in the today plugins selection. the widgets are really cool but not being able to edit the apps they control at the moment kinda sucks. some of them dont do anything because they are supposed to be connected to programs in the Omnia I900
Lets see where I should start. Well first this would not be my first windows mobile phone.. In the past year I have went from iphone>Sony Ericsson P1i>Palm Treo Pro>Sony Ericsson X1a>HTC Dream (Anroid G1)> Touch Diamond. I've always wanted the Touch Diamond when it first came, but i was scared to get it. As you can see all my previous devices have had a keyboard. The G1 has a lot of nice apps, friendly gui and very touch sensitive but it has no 3g for me since im in USA with ATT. As for the phone i am using right now the X1. I really like it alot but there are not too many developers out there cooking roms. I would like to give the touch diamond a try..
For those of you out there that do a lot of texting/Emailing/Im'ing please let me know what your experiences are like.
I have a question about the batt life. one of my main concern. Every phone i have had would last me about 2/4 to 3/4 of the day. I would have to charge the phone every chance i get. Do any of you guys use any im programs such as parlingo or im+?
What is the best im program out there for the phone? (i use to use agile messenger as i thought was one of the best. not sure if it would work on this device)
I would like to hear any x1 and touch diamond owners insights. (I would like to know how your browser experience is like with the 2 different device. *really important to me* I like how the iphone is really sensitive in scrolling and clicking of links. Is the touch diamond anything like that?)
I do kind of look forward to the accelerometer as the x1 does not have this feature.

No, it is not.
humm maybe i should wait for another device..
This guy has no clue what he is speaking about...
Palringo works very well on the phone.
With the correct ROM it's extremely quick, great battery life.
With all that being said, you're on ATT. Get the Fuze(touch pro). Has hardware keyboard, and a bit wider. Same software as HTC Diamond, same amount of ROMs(if not more). Plus, US 3G support.
I have diamond, used to have Kaiser.
made the switch because was using touchpal as default sip for texting emails ext. realized i barely ever slid out keyboard (unless someone else was going to use it)
so i would say try touchpal on one of your existing WM devices see if you can use it for more than a day without reverting to your slide out keyboard, maybe look into some other sips out there if you have something you like.
if you find you can't live without the hardware keyboard > Go for the touch pro
if you find maybe software is good enouph > Go diamond
Touchpal here : http://www.cootek.com/download.aspx
Browser is good (its opera 9.5 you can probably download it on another device and test it as well), its capatible with flash light so you can use it for flash content pages it isn't as fast or as smooth as iphone but it is REALLY close, has upto 3 tabs and the main benef is you get a full download manager so you can save whatever you want (eg. cab files from xda )
battery is decent, i usually get a day out of it but thats because i use it as a gameboy among other things. extended batteries are available ranging in from $7 - $80US but can take the diamond upto 3000mah
and finally with some quick tweaking you can get the screen sensetivity up (still won't be as good as iphone tho) and with TouchResponse you can enable hepatic feedback (vibrate on touch)
sweet thanks a lot for the mini review. i think i will try it on my x1 and see how that goes.
