Engineers...

SO, i would like to know from you that are engineers or engineering students, how you use your smartphone/pda for.
I am a chemical engineering student and I've found lot of interesting software, most of them calculators, unit conversors and dictionaries. Beside that, using the pda to organize myself and keep information allways with me is great.
So, if you could indicate some more different softwares i would be very happy. I was looking for some app that gives me data that I usually need old fashioned tables for, like steam properties, or fluids porperties at different conditions. Also, what is the best unit conversor, that allow to convert combination of units. And I believe that there could be even other ways to take advantage of my device.
So, I'm waiting for your opinion and indications.
What I can indicate is Space Time, an amazing calculator for advanced calculations, and Math Tablet that would retire my HP calculator if my device's screen could be more responsive. Also, Lexisgoo is a great dictionary to get god definitions for english terms.

Im a computer engineering major (finishing up second year) and i use it to basically take pictures of circuit designs and email it to myself for view on computer. Im very sloppy by hand

This software should be good for chemical scientists, or at least it would be if I had my PDA on the beginning of the graduation...
Chemical engineers are actually concerned more about industrial process conditions, (transport of energy, mass and momentum) and fluid/solid conditions, most of them physico-chemical. Old school chem. eng. would use a lot of tables for various data.
And I bet you could use more your device. It is at least much more powerfull than any other pocket calculator you have.

At the risk of sounding old...I use the HP48GX calculator emulator on my Hermes. I even have all my custom programs from college installed. It also has the default Engineering Library with basic formulas and diagrams. After some years in the industry, I can tell you I pretty much just use Pocket Excel and the HP48 scientific calculator. I also use Outlook tasks to document everyday activities (very important in today's workplace...) and synchronize them to the PDA to have the answers handy, in case I run into one of those manager types.
What would be cool is to run LabVIEW and Matlab on my PDA. Then I would be invincible

I've tested some HP emulators... but i've found that they're not so usable since the screen is smaller and the response from the touchscreen is also slower...
I've found other scientific calculators for the PDA that are better, like Math Tablet...
But on class i'm still using my hp 28S calculator (now, that's OLD, it's almost my age but it's still a very nice to use calculator.) that I've got from my brother. Actually, I got my PDA instead of buying another graphic calculator.
Pocket Excel (or better, PlanMaker) is definetly one great tool too, I've used several times already. Matlab and Maple would be awesome, but I've read somewhere that those ARM processors aren't the best for math procedures...

I've just finsihed my Mech Engineering. During my course I mainly used my smartphone for a pendrive. Also for my project guide to check up on my project report using Word and Adobe(not the entire thing of course .) I've demoed a few CAD drawings on it as well. Used the engineering calculator quite a few times. I've video taped a few practical sessions as well for future reference.
Now I'm planning to do my Msc in IT, so bascially I have the C# IDE running and also the MySaifu J2SE JVM, so I can basically test my programs on the go.

Let's make an App store for all the important cabs on this wonderful thread.
Let's get some ideas on how to do this.
Like having a website with all the cabs listed so you can download them directly to the device. I am talking themes, cabs, roms(to go to SD Card for flashing)
Let's get creative, we can do it. Let's not wait on Microsoft.

Hey man, Project Gecko has been in beta for a while.
There are 2 advertised on XDA and Gecko is the only one that comes to mind at the moment. Maybe someone else can help me out with the second one..?

I know a little bit of web design, so I may play around with this over Christmas break. (I am a school teacher). But other ideas would be appreciated too.
Goals:
1. Centralized location for apps, tweaks, roms, etc
2. App Store Accessed from device (not just active sync)
3. Improve as much as possible

Small ad placement = income generation for storage
Recent Updates menu to notify when upgrade is ready (integrate in SMS/email system linking to DL)

XDA mods to police the uploads
Exclusive program list (homepage) which charges developers for front page access. (scrolling banners in predefined format)
Free vs. Pay program areas.
Point system for repeat users. Points = discounts for pay programs.
Thats all I can think of at the moment.

[revival] Microsoft Live Mesh

Like so many of those great little apps and neat little softwares we find out there, Microsoft Live Mesh seems to be one of those personal favorites of mine that has been thrown to the wayside by what most likely is "Progress".
BACKGROUND​
For those that find this application new to their world, Microsoft Live Mesh (http://www.mesh.com) is a Multi-Device Synchronization tool, also called a "cloud service", that creates and / or modifies a folder on either your Microsoft Windows PC, Apple PC, or Windows Mobile Device to allow synchronization of the content in that folder with other designated devices within the "cloud". Each folder can be set with specific permissions and can be allowed or denied access to other designated users. I've always felt as though this was a wonderful and amazing tool and had been using the service for a few years. As with many other members of this forum, I to find myself flashing many different ROM's on what can be a daily basis if the amazing chef's out there are hot in the kitchen!, and MS Live Mesh really made that process easier by allowing me to sync desired content that would have otherwise been tedious and allowed me to take my files I have on my PC with my on my WM PPC where ever I had an internet connection.
CURRENT STATUS​
Sadly, as of the past year or so this wonderful software has become seriously underdeveloped, and I wanted to try and take a step toward a revival of this great application. One might argue that the reason for lack of development might be because of newer development in different and update phone software, or that there was not enough of a community outcry for this type of application. Whatever the case may be, one last cry for help on what has turned out to be a world renowned mobile device forum wouldn't hurt, right?
There is an already running MS Forum on the subject of development where if this sort of thing does perk your interest, you can find more information about what fixes have already been found. There is also already a forum on XDA Developers that has already been started... but the last thing mentioned in that forum was about getting access to the tech preview of the application.
MY RESULTS​
So far, I have run into consistant failure in using the software using any of the new ROM's for my Fuze and am usually met with the same result... when I try to lauch the application on my Fuze, it crashes before finishing loading, or after I finish the login process, I am met with a setup error when trying to add my device to the cloud.
There you have it, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. If you have any idea's on how we might be able to get this up and running again, please feel free to post and let's really get some community development action going on! Hopefully it's not the case that MS has just pulled the plug on the whole thing and didn't tell anyone, right? :?

My understanding is that Mesh is being merged with Windows Live Sync (as part of Windows Live Wave 4). Hence data will be synced into Skydrive rather than the separate Mesh storage area. Hopefully this will mean a new winmo 6.5 client, although there is talk that this might be phone7 only
No release date for wave 4 yet either

[APP] Crumbs (looking for a fellow developer!)

So I recently got very interested in Windows Phone 7 (mango) and I had been thinking about starting to create my own apps for a while. The result is the idea for an app that is as follows:
Name: Crumbs
Possible abbreviation: to send somebody a "crumb"
In short: An app that capable of: writing/creating, organising, sharing and following instructions, AKA crumbs.
What I want to achieve with this is a new option into social networking, but this time it's also very useful and not just fun to show off. What could these crumbs be? Well, I've thought of some categories already:
Routinely task:
like the stuff you do every morning, shouldn't forget, etc.
Work/study task:
some sort of study schedule, with certain points you should handle to complete the whole task.
Preparation/cooking task:
doesn't need any explanation.
Scavenger hunt/adventure:
wouldn't it be great if you can give a list of instructions to someone with some reward at the end?
Travelling:
similar to your adventure, but could contain various flight data or a couple of options (so you don't "finish" an item, but finish 1 item in a dillema.
Other: always have some other category..
User defined: if a user wants to make his/her own category.​So these are the categories, but as you've already seen, each category has different types of commands/operations one has to perform to complete the whole task. So when writing a new one, you could filter the entry-options by the ones most important for that category and give the users a seperate option to add another operation than the ones listed by default. Some possible operations and their integration ideas are as stated below:
Action: very straightforward, do something and when executing the crumb you simply check the box when done. Maybe some option with a timer that alerts you that you should be done with the operation soon (for example: cooking).
Navigate: go to a specific location and then you check the operation. Possible GPS integration/maps?
Input: give certain input to go on. For example useful when creating an adventure (go there, look for the church and read what's on it) or something else that should need a password or any other input.
Alert: to alert yourself/the executor OR (and this is important) some other user that you've arrived at a certain operation in your crumb.​
Yeah, you read it right, another user. Because one other important aspect of almost every app nowadays is SHARING. So ofcourse, there will have to be the option to share crumbs. People will be able to manage their crumbs on a phone ofcourse, but if there's a lot, wouldn't it be easy to have them stored online too? A place where you can rapidly type, organise and share your crumbs. So there should be a format to save them in (.crumb looks fantastic ). So, you simply send someone the crumb using a public link you create for your privately stored crumb. But what about something called instructors/friends? Wouldn't it be awesome if you can allow certain people to GIVE you crumbs straightaway, so you'll get alerted and know you have to do something (OK, "your mom" wouldn't be awesome, but useful nonetheless). To make things easier for this, the users will have to be able to manage these friends/instructors too and have their own cookie jar/cake box to receive their crumbs directly in (on the website and in the app). I sense some Facebook/social integration, don't you?
Then there's this weird habit of people: they've got calendars and tasks on them. Wouldn't it be great if the crumbs are linked to calendar and/or outlook-task items?
Sooo... This is my (already quite complex) idea. To conclude things once again: the outlook task system isn't capable of managing real tasks. You can give certain progress percentages, but that's just something that could be managed by this app, since it's much more in depth.
Problem is, I'm not that good at developing (yet)! So if any developer out there is willing to take this thing on with me (I just feel this could turn out great), please let me know. Meanwhile, I'll keep dreaming on and I'm a quick learner, so I hope to show a mockup of some sorts soon . I've already thought out some sort of menu structure/frame everything should be hung up in and that's what I'll be working on the time to come.
And keep in mind:
This idea is NOT for sharing by anyone but me right now. That it may be very clear that this idea is not for your own use!

How do you plan your work before you start coding?

I’ve enjoyed writing down my thoughts and my entire workflow as one big chunk of text before starting coding. It helps me to get an overview of the things that I need to be doing. I’ve noticed that different developers have their own unique way of planning and organizing their work - right from paper and checklists, to visual boards.
It would be interesting to see 1. what tools each of us use to manage your project plan? 2. how we share this plan with our team members/clients? 3. how do we manage our specific daily tasks and todos? and 4. our workflow/ project management process?
Feel free to share your thoughts. Probably we could learn from each other's best practices.

Well, I have a system about the daily tasks and todos. Whenever I start any work I have to have a list of tasks, written in paper or in computer, to tell me all the things I have to do. These tasks can be very small things, like fixing some small flaw, or bigger things, such as starting to implement some bigger feature. Once I have all the tasks written down, I start doing the items in list in what ever order I feel like is the best, wiping things off the list as I finish them. Usually the list grows as there comes up some stuff that I was not able to plan beforehand, but as long as I have all these tasks written down, they will eventually all be dealt with. This system is super simple and helps to keep the stress down as I do not have to try to remember all these small things, and I am able to focus on the task that I am doing right now.

Talking about my own, single person projects:
Earlier, I just started coding and then had a lot of refactoring, removing, redoing...
In my recenty projects, I started writing document and just put in all my ideas. Writing helped to organize my thoughts and ideas.
The document ended it paragraphs like
- motivation
- interface
- feature x
- feature y
- feature z
... and rough ideas of how to implement something (client-server communication, how to...)
So I just used something like word.
I think, moving it further, you could use scribbles of classes, class diagrams... but for that I am still an too impulsive coder.

I'm using trello.com and creating 3 boards TODO DOING DONE. It help a lot with organization .
