I prefer octrotalk - like palringo it uses your data plan rather than sms. Still in beta but I prefer it to palringo.

Reading the part of the contractual agreement, concerns become a little too uncomfortable.
TERMS AND CONITIONS OF THE OCTROTALK SERVICE PROXY AGREEMENT:
I understand and agree that OctroTalk proxy server may be acting on my behalf in relaying my messages to some or all of the IM networks and to my device. I understand that data transmitted from my device can go through a proxy operated by Octro, and can be stored temporarily or permanently there.
I agree that Octro has no responsibility or liabilityfor the deletion of, or the failure to store or to transmit, any content and other communications maintained or transmitted by OctroTalk.

BeeJive Messenger if you have a data plan

It is beta, but its free at this point. It really works well in my opinion. I have used octrotalk as well and this is much better.

usually yahoo go have the messenger too, try redownload,.
or the one i like the best is Beejive IM,.

OZ IM aim tilt issues

Is it me or does the OZ IM client that comes with the AT&T Tilt not work right when you talk to other people?
My friend has the real AIM client on his Mogul and I tried to chat with him via OZ IM and all he sees is blank messages.
I tried Agile and it works great. I have to buy it though, so...I tried the AIM client (from the UK site) and it works too, but it's crap because the notifications are bad and it seems like an old program.
Any ideas?
its bc Oz IM uses text messaging instead of data and the mobile version of aim doesnt support text messaging.
Which IM service you using? MSN, AIM? I don't use AIM or Yahoo, but I do use MSN form time to time. Windows Live works just fine for that, and uses data, not SMS.
I wanted to use AIM. I have an unlimited data plan and that's the reason I wanted to use data instead of SMS. Any way to make this client work? Don't want to buy Agile.

Thanks. I gave the Palgrino app a try, which one do you recommend?
Works!!
Palgrino is working for me. its quick and stays connected even when minimized.
I use Slick. It works really well and uses data.
Hi:
Do any of these have smilies?
I just installed Palringo, and it looks very nice, but no smilies.
Thanks!
PS: I don't mind paying for it, if it has a nice enough interface, and smilies. Palringo looks amazing, it's exactly what I am looking for except for the smilies.
Beejive had it on my blackberry untill i got the tilt. works like a charm for me and it shows notifications and smilies and supports all clients
http://www.beejive.com/wm6/index.php
The problem in my eyes with the applications that use DATA connections instead of SMS, is that while logged in, now my Tilt has to maintain a live data connection with the network.
What I like about an SMS version is that no matter where I am, 3G, Edge, it just works over SMS. True it's not as "responsive" as a data connection, but it's mobile IM. What do you expect?
On that note, since I'm running aftermarket cooked ROM, does anyone have the OZ IM client that the tilt shipped with available?

Instant Messaging, is OctroTalk the best?

Looking to use AOL IM primarily.. is octrotalk my best choice for Wm6?
I liked Palringo more.
OctroTalk made you register your yahoo as a jabber account or something, so after I did that some mysterious service kept logging into my account even if I wasn't there. So I went and changed the Yahoo IM password, and stopped using OctroTalk.
thanks i will use palringo
anyone have any other suggestions??
IM+ is nice, but its not free.
IMO, IM+ is the best out there, but yes, it's quite expensive for a WM app...

Can we do Voice chat in palringo with online yahoo/gmail contacts
I'm new to IM on WM devices (not new to WM or IM though, just the combination), and wanted to know if any of these allow you to stay logged in and appear available with the phone in standby mode, and then will notify you when a message arrives.
Thanks.

You can send Voice IM with Palringo to any of your contacts. they will receive an IM that has a link to the Palringo site to click on to get your voice message. While it can be a pain (for the person not running Palringo) I've had chats with a contact running Palringo where they are Voice IM'ing me, and I'm typing text back to them.
If you are asking if you can do 2 way voice chat (sort of like skype) then no, Palringo is an IM style Voice. But whats nice about this is the receiver can listen to your message when its convenient for them (like with IM, you read it when its convenient) then respond via voice or text.
Slick by Lonley Cat Games. It's currently free.

I used OctroTalk on my Dash when I only used WiFi. It doesn't seem to work over AT&T's MEdia Net because of the proxy.

Frankly, guys, I don't understand why you don't read the Wiki before asking. There is a FULL review of Palringo in there ( http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...tiplatform instant messenger client: Palringo ), where I've answered ALL questions like these.
It can't chat over VoIP but supports single-directional voice clips. Nothing else. If you need VoIP / real chat, get Fring, it supports full VoIP with Skype, MSN , Google Talk and standard SIP. Note that OctroTalk also supports Google Talk. The latter no longer supports Yahoo Messenger – earlier betas didn’t gray out “Call” with YM clients.
I've written a review of Fring at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...WM Standard) info + Fring review + other news

All of them do. Read the IM Bible - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=The Windows Mobile Instant Messaging Bible

Thanks Buddy.
Your review links have answered my all the questions. Hats off to you...
Just One last silly question:--
As you mentioned while installing Fring.. "Make sure you let it also run the CAB file so that it is installed".
My question is that will we be having an option to choose the path while installing cab. So that i can install it on my storage card instead on phone memory.
Actually it's a generic question and due to performance i want to install all my cab files in my storage card....
Thanks for your help.....

Yup, you will: WM5+ asks the destination when you directly click a CAB file.
However, Fring is auto-starting and the memory card MAY not be available during booting, which MAY result in a boot-time error message. Therefore, if you encounter these problems after resets, make sure you (re)install it to the built-in storage instead.

Under WM5+, on models not suffering from compaction problems (and the Kaiser is one of them), it's no longer necessary to keep the built-in storage clean and install / copy as much stuff to the card as possible.
www.fring.com is also a great IM/voice-enabled client.
(And free !!)
I'm using the last freeware version of Agile. Still works fine. Recurring charges are ridiculous for an IM client, especially when you can get great open-source apps like Adium for absolutely no charge. It's legit, since nobody can force you to upgrade your install of their app.
I tried IM+. It was OK but not that great. Mundu refused to let me run their current version despite selling me a "lifetime" license for their PalmOS version a year or two ago, so I not only refuse to pay their extortion fee but recommend against using their software. Their "lifetime" license ... isn't.

ICQ client

Hey..
are there any other ICQ clients for Android besides meebo and IM+ which both have two downsides for me
meebo: I only see the ICQ number of the contacts, not the (custom) names
IM+: you know, it's not free
So.. do you know any other ICQ client?
Use "Hello AIM!" - search it on the market! Works pretty well! And it's FREE, much better then meebo's app. Use your ICQ# as LogIn. Enjoy
Thx alot. That app is really way better (at least right now).
The integrated IM (AIM) app works for me too. I was pretty surprised that we can use ICQ accounts in these mobile AIM clients ...

Don't be surprised, they've used the same backend for quite some time now.

Meebo! AIM, MSN, Yahoo, MySpace IM, Google Talk, Jabber *working solution*

Finally, a viable messaging solution for android. The current version of Meebo for the android platform(V6) surpasses the quality of BuddyMob. I(along with others) have confirmed that there are no disconnects while phone is asleep, no forced closing, and no lost incoming messages while phone is asleep. Also, the best part is messages are received almost instantly without using sms. Pure data. I am sooo excited I could cry. Now I can say my G1 is finally a competititor in the pda market. Thank You Meebo!!!!!!!!!
You can find meebo in the Android Market.
Also, please post your results here. Maby the developer will see our support and improve the app.
Interesting. I had a few issues with Meebo that made me switch to BuddyMob instead. I will definitely check the new version of Meebo out.
Ugh. Unfortunately it still won't remember my ICQ UIN/password between sessions. I really can't be bothered to type that in manually every time I log on. It's a pity, because Meebo does seem to have improved a lot in other areas, like how it's now listing my contacts' nicknames instead of their UIN's.
after 2 days of use, I noticed the battery life is better with meebo.
mannyb, have you added this comment to the market? The dev might add the feature if he/she sees enough request for it. I noticed my requested features were added.
Also, for the U.K. users who are upset about the builtin IM missing some networks. This is a good free solution. If we get enough ppl supporting the dev this app would ROCK.
palringo is being worked on too.
Im alpha testing palringo. Its quite promising

But the built in IM client really does suck, IMHO. Hard. I have a couple hundred buddies. (I use it for work and for play..) and have multiple accounts with multiple groups and I find that it takes forever to load, then populate with buddies... plus, the stock apps (as well as most of the other IM clients) insist on showing empty groups. So, I've got 15 empty groups showing...
Meebo combines all buddy lists in one, it's SUPER quick to load, can have more than one of each account signed in plus empty groups are ignored. I'm sold.
Plus, the built-in IM app uses text-message credits for both inbound and outbound IMs (with the exception of GTalk).
If Meebo would add Facebook chat to the Android client then this would be a no-brainer.

It has support for Facebook chat you just have to first set it up on meebo.com and then once you sign on with your Meebo account on the G1 your Facebook contacts will show up. I have tried it and it works well,.

get an account on meebo.com and set up your facebook/aim/yahoo/msn/icq/myspace/etc... accounts. Then, sign in under "Meebo" on the android client and they're all there.
I know.

Palringo PTT looks to be coming but is not in the alpha release yet (icons there). It's coming along nicely, but far from complete. I love that with Palringo you log in to one Palringo account and bam, all your other accounts come up and log in. Pretty hawt.

Meebo does that too. Choose "Meebo" from the drop down list on your phone and any IM networks that you have associated with the Meebo web account auto-log in. I currently have MySpace, Facebook, G-Talk, 2 yahoo accounts, AIM, ICQ and MSN.
(Damn, I sound like I work for the company. (I don't))

DO any of these apps allow for status updates in aim?
There is so far a HUGE issue with Meebo. There is NO status updating. You cannot go "Away" or "Idle" or any of that, nor can you post your own status. To me this is a major drawback that needs addressing. I tried BuddyMob, it didn't really work very well. Ill be waiting on an update for Meebo. (there was actually one today, but did not address the problem at hand.)
So you can in fact utilize facebook and Myspace messenger within meebo? How does this IM application effect battery life? Is it push messaging or is the application just constantly polling a server?
I haven't noticed any major battery draw while using it... I don't always have it on. As for changing statuses, I just don't think that's a big issue for me. It I'm not available for chat, I just turn the thing off. The only issue I have regarding meebo is the notification is always on even after I've logged off, saying I'm still "signed on with x number off accounts."
@gimpeh - yes, sign on via the website and create a meebo account and you can add facebook and myspace as well as yahoo AIM, ICQ, etc... . Then, on the G1, dont sign on to each account (yahoo and aim, etc..) just signon to "Meebo" and you'll signed onto all of your accounts at once.
So far, none of the IM clients - online or real apps - can handle being in an environment where they lose signal on a regular basis. My office building has scattered signal inside for T-Mobile, and if I walk to another office, I'm bound to lose signal for atleast 15-20seconds. None of the IM clients can handle this. The builtin GTalk is the best, by far though. It's atleast able to reconnect after losing signal. But I will leave Meebo running and come back 30min later (After walking around the building a little bit) and it will ALWAYS be disconnected.
Is it really that hard for the developers to poll whether there is signal every few minutes and try to reconnect? It seems like the apps that "claim" to do the polling tend to give up after a certain number of minutes.
In my opinion, all IM apps should continue to poll for an active connection until the radio is shut off. I know it would be a battery drain to a certain degree after a while, but I know many people who are in my situation where they lose signal for very short amounts of time several times a day.

which IM for yahoo, msn do you use?

Hi,
So far I couldn't find any yahoo or msn messenger for android. Is there any?
Which IM for yahoo, msn do you use ?
Is there any IM for android which connects directly to the yahoo/msn server (unlike meboo, ebuddy)?
Is there any messenger which supports multi gmail accounts?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there
Try Truphone or Fring
ebuddy works great
Hi Msn is working flawlessly for me, although i am unsure if it supports yahoo messenger.
There is also an app called NimBuzz which supports windows live, yahoo, AIM, Skype, Facebook, Gtalk, My space, ICQ.. and soo much more...
Check it out.. i use it mostly for Skype Calls but everything else seems to work amazing when i first set it up.
There are also several apps that work without extra Server.
I'm using ICQ and MSN. I can't say anything about yahoo...
By far the best App I have tested was IM+. Too sad it costs way too much...
The built-in t-mobile app also connects directly. I used it for several days. works fine (ICQ is the same protocol as AIM)
but now I'm on Meebo. I like to have the same History on Phone and PC.
the "IM" app that comes on CM roms (i believe its the T-Mobile one) is a great app that works great, only downside is on Rogers network you cannot connect as it will try and verify by sim. You will need to be on wifi to use "IM" but i still love this app
i also use Nimbuzz but have had some issues as of late with it dropping (could be the phone too )
hi yahoo
there is a hi yahoo app. works well for me, but right now i go back & forth between meebo & ebuddy.
I just dun like the way all these messenger design. These company can make better layout, fonts and feature for Iphone and why not Android? Just disappointed.
IM+ (the conversation layout very very bad. Words too small can't change font and stupid color)
Palringo (All the buddy(contact) squeeze into one. Very difficult to locate friend)
Meebo ( I hate to login meebo inorder to use MSN/Yahoo, buddy layout very bad)
MSN Droid (Not bad so far. Only support MSN and no yahoo.)
ebuddy ( Another one need ebuddy account. conversation fonts too small)
Android IM ( So far so good but will disconnect if phone go to sleep. Maybe its design to work with SMS)
You guys forgot BuddyMob
Plus: You can choose your own Messenger Picture, MultiLogin (connect from your homecomputer AND your Android Phone the same time) is supported, swipe function is included
Minus: No Ring for MSN, no Send Files, no smileys
Used it for months, now i'm looking for something new
eBuddy works for me... careful with gtalk though - it sets your status to an ad.
On the MyTouch 3G there is an almost sort of half-decent app which includes MSN, Yahoo and I think it is AIM. At least you get to see your buddies online and it is over the data network, but as mentioned already you have to be on wi-fi to sign in unless you are on T-Mobile's data network as the phone uses only T-Mo's SIM info (and wifi) to let you sign in. The question is, is there a way to tweak the app so that you can use any carrier and still sign in from the data on your SIM, and how can this be done? I am nearly sure it can be. Can anyone help?
I've been using meebo without any problems.
anyone knows which IM app can do group chats? like in a conversation with more than 2 person? I know ebuddy can't do that... it's really frustrating!
I've found that when using ANY im program it's hard NOT to get dc'd. I have settled on using msn live which is free from the marketplace.it still dc's every now and then but at least now I can have a direct shortcut to msn on my desktop instead of just a general IM shortcut. hope this helps.
I found a Windows Live app (plainly called MESSENGER) on Android Market. It is quite good indeed! I installed it on my Hero and MyTouch 3G After a few days it would not function on the Hero - only force close whenever I launched the app. I uninstalled it from the Hero thereafter. Still works on my MyTouch 3G though. I cannot find it on Android Market anymore - not sure why not.
I use QQ!!!!!!Hoho!!
msn has an official app called MSN Droid, its pretty sick
and they were saying something about a yahoo one coming out soon
try nimbuzz
