HTC Destruction Anonymous? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi, My name is Hooty, I'm an HTC Killer. Tonight marks my 7th HTC phone to be destroyed in some form in my possession...
1. Jasjar - Screen
2. Dash - Screen shatter - replaced
3. Dash - Charging Circuit Fried
4. Advantage - Screen - replaced it.... then...
5. Advantage - Charging Circuit Fried (both related to 1 single bad charger...)
6. Diamond Euro - Slammed in a door and frame bent (screen survived miraculously, but permanently mis-aligned)
7. Diamond US - Fell in to a puddle from my laptop bag....
So this leads me up to my next question, the internals of the Diamond Euro seem to be just fine, it was just the frame and exterior that are bad, with the exception being the screen... Is it feasible to change out the radio and any other boards affect by the water for the unwatered down parts from the Euro version? or are they non-interchangeable? I am not worried about the 3G capability as I use T-mobile US and of course they use off-frequencies for their 3G..... I have the manual downloaded and definitely have all of the tools (have done the screens on all of my devices myself, so technical prowess isn't the issue). Just need to know the interchangeability of the parts....
-Hooty
Phones: 7 down.... how many more to go?

i would have thought the main board etc would be generic.

hmmm, let the phone drip dry over night in a warm room (after pulling sim, stylus, battery and back) and it seems to be doing alright with the exception of the triggered moisture indicator.... maybe I got lucky this time....

My wife's blue angel fell in the toilet... don't ask. Same thing though, I thought it was toast but after it had fully dried it worked fine, I won't comment on the smell Seriously though it lasted until I got sick of it.

Of the phone or the smell?
So far, it is doing well, just means I keep my other phone for being a test bed for whatever ROMs I want to play with.....

i had an old nokia pda phone go in a pool i blow dried it and let it sit for 2 days
then it worked for about 7 months and stopped suddenly
when i sent it to T Mo they said rust got to it :/

How did you break all those screens ,were you sitting on then or having then in your rear back pocket ,,the rear back pocket is a instant HTC killer,my buddy killed 3 htc´s in his back pocket

Buy a leather case and put it sidewards on your belt!

like someone suggest for my broken screen S710,

Shoots, I finally dropped my Tilt on the ground.

Was at a football game last Sunday & dropped my phone on the ground. It must of fell out of my lap when I jumped up to cheer. Now that hurts! I've been babying it too. Oh well, it was bound to happened sooner or later.
Now my Tilt has scratches on the left & right bottom corners. I was thinking about taking a fine grade of sandpaper & sanding it down. Has anyone tried smoothing out a ding on there phone before. If so, what did you use?
I just recently found a small nick on the top corner of my Tilt. I'm assuming I got it the same day I dropped it. That means my phone must of cart wheeled before falling on its back! *OUCH, That hurts literally!*
Sorry to hear that bud,
Check out this site, they carry the housing for our lil toy

Thanks for the link! It's good to know that they sell the OEM casing. It's not cheap though.
I dropped mine for the first time on Saturday night. I almost cried, haha. I have one ding on the bottom corner, towards the back, by the stylus.
I've been doing really well, considering that I usually drop a new device a day or two after getting it.
Last week, however, I was showing off the camera album feature to my sister-in-law and she just had to have a go herself.
Cue my lovely Vario III hitting the ground a second later.
No damage at all though, so I've forgiven her!

That's when it's time to call AT&T......
"If the phone is all of a sudden not working the way it's supposed to... they replace it, free if it's still under warranty".

How funny that's where mine got scuffed up too, right next to the stylus. I was hoping the stylus was the one that substained the damage so I can chage it out. Mine also got scuffed up on the bottom left hand side. It bounced around first before laying on the ground. For the weight and size of this phone I was expecting more damage from the fall.
I guess the more your carefull not to drop the phone the more prone it is to happened.

I dropped mine couple of weeks ago... I was doing a research paper for my university, and papers were all over the place... and sadly my TyTN II was between two papers... so when I pulled one of them... the device flew in the air and landed on the floor... fortunately there was a thick carpet on the floor... thus no harm is done... but during the next five min while I was checking if my phone is still working... I was so pale and scared :s
Man! I hope this does not happen to any of you guys...
Cheers
dropped mine after 2 weeks of having it - i was jogging to the bus at the time - fumbled it out of my belt ouch and dropped it - i accidentally stamped on it at the same time, on rough knobly tarmac, face-down - i skidded a bit on it too, sort of like a sktebaord - i was like 'omgomgomg' picked it up and by some sort of miricle the screen was untouched - fascia is a bit knacked but it all works just fine, only thing is the tilt mechanism is a bit loose now though its still sturdy (ie i can push the top right side and the screen bit will angle slightly against the body, but only by a few millimetres)
Coming Soon...
http://www.seidioonline.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=896
This will cover any damage to the case and protect it.
I was running into work in a heavy rain carrying a large laptop bag, so I was running fairly spastic, and my Tilt popped out of the case, slid face down on the sidewalk into a puddle. The battery popped out, as well as the stylus. I grabbed all I could find (had to go back later to find the stylus) and shook it out. Then I used a heat gun to gently warm the unit up. after 2 hours, I put the battery back in and it powered up fine, except the touchscreen was dead.
I then left it on my desk on charge with bluetooth, 3g,Wlan and screen full bright on, to generate as much internal heat as possible. After another 2 hours, the touch screen would randomly activate items on the today screen, every minute or so. After watching that for an hour with no real response from the touchscreen yet, I power cycled the phone, and to my surprise, the touch screen worked. Been working ever since.
Luckily the battery poped out otherwise I would think the device would have got fried?
Well, as idiotic as it may sound, I did put the battery back in and power up the phone while it was wet. It seemed to boot up just fine, but I pulled the battery after 15 seconds as to not push my luck.
My Drop . . .
I was running up stairs in my office building (concrete with metal stairstep edging), when something (my Tilt OMG!) suddenly clattered onto the stairs - apparently I had not made sure the magnetic flap on my case was firmly connected - it popped open and the SIM card holder popped out - I fearfully picked it up and inspected - can't find a scratch on it! and it works fine, and nothing seems loose! I'm shocked, surprised and pleased, but will be more careful in the future, obviously (in almost 2 years with my Wizard, I never once dropped it!).
Try to burnish the scuffed areas with a smooth piece of plastic. Start slow and it might kind of fill in by smoothing the rough edges. Kind of like a good paint job on an auto, get it flat as possible and it will shine like a diamond in a goats A*s.
Dropped my 8525 a couple of times and fixed it as mentioned above. Dropped my tilt the first day and it missed the concrete by a fraction of an inch and landed on carpet. Lucky for me only the back flew off and my great little toy is unmared so far.
The older I get the less my hands seem to be actually connected to my body and under my control...
Did I mention I love my tilt and this site?

What kind of plastic are you using?
I tried using some Brasso Metal Polish, but it didn't do anything for it. The Brasso would work on scratches, but I have chunks missing from the plastic on my Tilt & dings. I'm willing to try anything as long as I don't harm my baby! I already feel like she's been abused! LOL!

update, kaiser dead after washing machine, 1 part needed :(

Titel says enough, I put my kaiser in the washing machine, and offcourse it was dead... After drying it for 3 weeks I decided to put the power back on. It seems its alive, vibrate when poweron and charling light is orange. But no display at all... :S
Yesterday after 2 months (got a new diamond from the insurance and was travelling) I hooked it up to my laptop. And strange enough, activesync found it instantly, also is the tytn registred in the wifi network and i find him with my diamond on bluetooth as well.... its also possible to explore the device and copy paste etc. etc.
So know a question to a expert, can I roughly take the conclusion that the mainboard is still intact, and that the LCD is dead, or can it also be because of a damaged/lifted flex cable etc. Is there any way to check if its because of flex cables/mainboards issues or caused by a broken LCD?
If its not to expensive Ive got a new project
edit: LCD screen has been replaced and is fully working now All functions are still up and running, GPS, cameras, wifi etc. etc. The only part that isnt working is the keyboard. Some keys react, but most of them are dead. Does anybody know a shop on the internet that sells a complete keyboard unit incl. cable? Searched ebay but i didnt fine one so fast!
thanks in advance!
ok,
I opened the kaiser completely, and after cleaning assambled him once more. After power on, I now see things on the lcd, touchscreen is working, but there is no backlight. So it isnt usable at all. For one second the backlight jumped on as well, but its now dead (flicker sometimes). Is this the LCD of is this another problem?
pls advice
cheers
There may still be soap residue inside
There may still be soap residue inside, which conducts electricity.
You may want to find a way to safely rinse what you can, then dry by surrounding components with silica gel to absorb any moisture.
I did that to a camera a while back and it worked.

cleaned the whole phone with gel, but the lcd screen stays on at about 50 procent brightness, whatever i changed it wont go to full (after cleaning it was at 100% for about 5 minutes)
so i guess a new lcd will do the job...
tnx for the tip!

Will try that as well... however its a long time ago already!!
But the conclusion now is that its fully functional besides 2 things:
-LCD (flickers and is not at full brightness)
-Keyboard (some letters work, some dont...)
Does anyone know a site who ship these parts to norway?
The good thing is... dismantling a kaiser and rebuild it takes only 20 minutes

haha, its a malfunction in the brain... when you drink to much beer, and decide to wash your clothes, then it goes wrong!
skål
My daughter wears a hearing aid takes it off at night and puts it in a box type device called DryStore by Global I think. It removes ALL and ANY moisture from within.
Well one day, same thing, she washed her cell phone in the washing machine. I took her phone, took the battery out, opened it up as much as I could and put it in the DryStore for 24hrs.
After that put the battery back in, turned it on and it worked perfectly. It was not a Kaiser but the idea is the same. That thing litterally gets all the moisture out. It is an AC powered device and not a toy. I think it is cheaper than a new LCD and Keyboard. If your device is salvagable this will do it.
If you do not want to buy one then find a hearing aid store and see if they will do that for you instead
Best of luck to you!

Nope, it doesnt include the ribbon, and i think i need that one as well anyway i will check ebay every day, but if someone has a good idea Im in for it.
I see that broken kaisers change owner for about 150 dollars, I have to admit, thats to expensive in my situation! Because everything is working ok (use it on daily base, seems ive got a fat touch cruise without the keyboard)!

[28-5-2009] Xperia fell, into toilet!!

OMG, this was the first thing i said.
suddenly my X1 fell into the toilet straight into the pipes!
but before it goes into the water, a good thing happend! the battery popped out . this might be a good sign
lucky me, i recovered my phone, but will it work?
i don't know, it's out of warranty anyway so let's open it, clean it and see what's inside.
steps done so far (started @ 10:00 am GMT+3)
1) washed the phone, with every single cleaning liquid i ever found
2) started opening the phone and cleaning it from the inside (yes, puring it with water and some cleaning/anti germs stuff) and yes including the bords.
3) finished cleaning it from the inside, now drying part (current status)
4) dryubg is over, connected everything together (without the body of the device, only boards) and YEPPPPPPPPPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII, it's working.
a) Touch screen is fine, LCD have some problem (seems it still have some water in) i will dissamble the LCD completely.
b) no other problems to the main hardware (as PDA, i didn't test the speaker or anything else!)
5) OS Is not booting now, LCD is missing the RED Color, getting stucked on the SE Logo!
6) got really tired, i think this will need time, went to the shop, bought an HTC Touch HD
7) i will continue working on X1 untill it's fixed.
i will update this as i progress.
wish me luck
[12-5-2009]
Finally got some time to check why the phone is stucked SE Logo.
- first tried a hard reset
it didn't solve it, i thought maybe flashing a new ROM will help.
- Flashed a new ROM (HSPL already there before),
Still the same issue, the LCD is missing the Blue Color Sometimes, its a carbon connector for sure and can be fixed, but why not booting?!
[28-5-2009]
- got more time to work on it
- flashed nX1i_v1_04_WWE, still, stuck on se logo!
- Check attached Images
Edit : i replaced the LCD, the phone is booting now but it's taking around 4 to 5 minutes to boot, it get's stucked at the SE logo then it continues.
i'm able to flash new ROMs.
BT and Wifi are not working.
BT is turining on and off but i cannot use it, my X1 cannot be found using any other BT device when it's on visible mode. and cannot send files from my X1!
Wifi : Not turining on at all!
anyone with ideas? i really suspect the flexcable due to any accedental push i made when opening the device but it's expensive to replace and honestly, a new X1 would cost a bit higher!
dang thats unlucky - as long as the battery fell out it wouldnt have short circuited anything then i guess - just dont turn it on till its SUPER dry

do you think it's possible to use the elictric hands dryer? or it will do some problems?
don't think a hairdryer should cause problems
about warranty then think all phones today have
indicators which show if they have been wet because
dropping it in water is not covered
surprisingly many people seem to drop phones in toilet
read it was the most common way for them to die
Are you shure that you aren't just in a bad nightmare?
My aunt throw already three mobiles into toilets, don't ask my why
Everything I can say is, that none of the phones could be reanimated
I have too admit my Xperia fell in once, after a few days all was okay, exept dpad wasnt functioning, and i couldnt hard reset or enter bootloader ( weird problem ) with the keys. Ended up replacing it, and forget asap.
Hey,
sh*t happens. Anyway. Here is a link with a thread called: my phone got wet - what should I do!
Even I never had such an accident before I found the solutions quite useful.
Have a look:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448106
Greets
I haven't read that thread posted above yet, but never use a hairdryer/hand dryer. The can be quite hot coming out of the nozzle, if you're not careful you can melt plastic with them (I work in a helpdesk, I've seen laptops come in after a tiny spillage but with melted keyboards after being attacked by a hairdryer).
Best bet is to take all the covers you can off, dry with a towel/kitchen paper (toilet paper breaks up and leaves lots of little bits) and leave to dry *slowly* resting on a towel, folded several times over, on top of a radiator. Leave it there for 24 hours, more if it looks like there's still water in there.
I'd expect to see tide marks on the screen afterwards though, especially if you live in a hard water area. If you live in a soft water area you might be luckier and have very little residue.
Maybe u should let the x1 go where all the good phones go, phone heaven.
bit of advice dont answer your phone as u take a leak, friend done that in a nightclub and then had to reach in and get it out. even my beloved x1 would have stayed there (take it as a lose lol).
ps. i hope u get it working bud
I read in an iphone forum that you should bury the phone in rice since the rice absorbs all the moisture.

Go and buy some Isopropanol, now open your phone and disassemble everything.
Fill some Isopropanol in an cup or something an lie the board inside. (IMPORTANT: The microphone and speaker and camera shouldn't get wet so get it off the board or if you can't you must seal them)
Now let the board lie in the cup for 1 night or so. the isopropanol should evaporate. the clue ist that the isoprop. is binding the water and the salts etc. in it and evaporates with them.
With this method i rescued several phone which was gone swimming
Sorry for my bad english

Kids...be sympathetic...
Anyway, also happened to me a while back, but with a PDA.
I dismantled it, washed it part by part and it worked like a charm after that.
The only thing was, the LCD was permanently stained or smth. One of the light diffusers into the lcd (which was paper btw) was damaged by the water.
But it was functional and I could still use it ok...until I fell on it...
And this happened (check attached file - if you look closely you can see the right part of the LCD is kinda missing)
I'm pretty curious to see your display after you manage to get it working...
Can you get some pics online?
I once accidentally dropped a Sony Ericsson device in a large glass of water - it completely recovered. Hope you have the same luck

Xperia fell in water!! Help!

Hi guys..
I've gone into depression! My cell phone fell in water and it probably stayed there for 10-15 mins. As soon i saw that I removed the battery and left it for drying for 3 days and I haven't done anything else to it like charging or trying to switch on in between. After 3 complete days I switched it on - what happened was that the display looked clean it showed the SE logo and then the logo remained there and after a while the cell restarts itself and shows the logo again and thats it - it keeps doing it until i remove the battery!
I thought the OS is gone crap so I checked if it still recognises my OS - i pressed the vol down button and started and it properly showed my OS.
I tried formatting the cell (Hard reset) - it successfully formatted itself and when it restarted - the problem persisted!!
I would've easily gone to claim my warranty but I have Hard_SPL installed in my cell and I believe they will take it as a tampered phone and not rectify it.
I simply love this phone can anyone PLEASE help me solve this out?
Anyone? I need you guys' help!
Darn No one replied here or what! Anyways I got it done myself!
All I can say is warranty wont help for water damaged phones (they can check) and perhaps looks at youtube videos for removing water and perhaps flash a different rom. Never happened to me though.
If you have insurance, claim.
Otherwise - thats it
Hmmm...if it drowned, it's probably dead.

I\ll summarize what I did.
The moment I saw i removed the battery, sim card and kept the cell for drying. The last day, 4th day, I kept it in an air tight container and kept that silica thing which comes with every electronic packing to absorb moisture. Put everything back and switched it on - Not a trace of what happened - it worked as it did b4!
Just to add my friend's cell phone - Nokia E72 hardly a week old was also with mine. He switched it on after 20 hrs and it worked fine!!!
Hmm. It may be a bit late, but try throwing it in a bowl of rice for a little, sucks out all the moisture, (whenever i wet my electronics, this trick always works) usually about a days worth of time. Other then that, Try flashing a new rom, you really can't hurt it any worse, and since its loading the boot thingy, you may still have a chance...
Hey guys as I mentioned before. my xperia is working fine now It worked after I dried it for 4 days.

I\ll summarize what I did.

One thing you missed is to soak it in distilled water before drying. That'll make sure you don't have a thin film of salts/dirt/gunk on your board, especially if the water it fell in was dirty
yeah you are right but i came to know about it only after 3 days between which I had no access to the Internet. After 3 days I dint have the guts to do it and I was pretty sure the water was clean.
I fell in the water with both my x1 and ipod touch and both of them died
but put them both in a tuber-ware with rice on the radiator for 24hours and both came back from the grave as good as new

My friend regrets buying E72. Not because he doesn't like it but because when buying he didn't think of any other phone. He was taken to a mobile shop and he was told (by the one who gifted this cell to him) to buy any cell phone he likes. When he told me about this I shouted at him for doing this blunder of not getting an iPhone or something. He said he dint realise it
I personally think E72 is a bad choice.
I went to a river just for fun with my friends. I'd kept my cell and this guy's cell in my bag and went swimming, the bag slipped into a stream of water... ;( I had three cell phones in this bag. X1 and Nokia 6630 which are mine and my friend's E72. 6630 had a narrow escape! But luck wasn't all that good for the other two

Galaxy s - Waterproof?

Not quite waterproof - BUT.......
I got caught in a storm last night on my motor bike - big rain on ma heed.
I was soaked, phone was in tank bag with GPS and headphones plugged in under crash helmet.
Phone was swimming in water, so I took it out attepted to wipe some off with my soaking hands. Didnt really work.
I then had to rescue my mate who crashed his bike, still raining hard, so still with GPS running and radio going, picked up his bike and drove it home for him. Phone working fine.
Went home, looked dry - ok.
Took SD card out this morning and !!the battery was still swimming!!!!! Phone had been on all night and all morning.
I was charging it via USB - I feel very lucky really.
Looking at the battery compartment, the phone seems to have been made very very well. No holes or gaps. All space used and edges sealed.
Yeah, we get some lag - yeah the fonts dont look great when zoomed all the way out - but this is the best device I have ever owned in my life. I am a good judge, I have owned LOTS of devices.
Galaxy S FTW
I remember when this happened to my XDA 2 - yeah the big old thing on PPC2002 or maybe 2003 - lol like all these devices lost all data if you turned it off!!! - NO INTERNAL FLASH!!!!!!!!!!
- Well I had the same thing with that - ended up with No buttons working and water all the way through it - had to scrape of all the white residue (LOL - not mine) from the control boards that had built up due to a lil water to get it working again.
We have a lot to look forward to with this device -
I am recommending it to everyone who asks - allow IOS and locking phone to 1 PC with itunes - what a crock.
I don't think it is water proof. And from the sound of it the water did made it inside the battery compartment and beyond.
Strange things with water and electronics is that, if the water are clean and you can run hot air through it to dry it thoroughly. It will continue to work. However if some part of it is still wet rust might form and other symptoms might show days later. So keep a close eyes on your information.
If it were salt waters, you are surely to be immediately screwed!
that was quite of an andventure!
You even saved your friend under rain, but your phone kind of kept alive after you =) hehehe
I bought a Galaxy S. I'm glad to read this one
Cheers
Phk
One thing to be aware of, is if you look in your headphone port, it will now be red (I believe the SGS has a water sensor).
I am trying to find a waterproof case for my phone though actually atm (with a sportband), for jogging.
this case is 100% waterproof
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.42413
they do work, i use it often when i go to the pool, just don't go diving with that in your arm, the sheer force will snap the armband off, no surfing either, just regular swimming is okay.
i stick in my passport and IDs as well when i go to touristic beaches as well, good place to put in some cash, all in 1 pocket
^dude thats so damn lame lol...
@ op - epic story buddy.
Lol no red headphone port im missin something I think!

Cheers
Awesome!!
Not sure about waterproofing, but my SGS survived a 3m drop onto rocks and into river. I recovered it a couple of minutes later, removed all parts (back cover, battery, sim card) wiped it with a clean tissue and waited for the water to dry out.
After a while i inserted the battery to test it and got a bootloop at the logo screen (water in the on-off button probably). At home I placed it onto a radiator with medium heat, about 40 dgr and let it over the night.
The morning after... surprise... it works perfectly!!
Probably the water will corrode something over time, that remains to be seen.
I am indeed happy about this phone!
Lets test this by swimming with it, my old Sony w508a failed in the washing machine. Got a Galaxy S that doesn't work on my carrier... great phone too bat it supports everything except 850MHz WCDMA

Lots of variants support 850 WCMDA, all the Canadian versions for one (Bell vibrant aka i9000m, rogers captivate, telus fascinate) as well as the AT&T Captivate are 850/1900/2100. Also heard about i9000T (australia?) and i9000B (brazil?) being 850/2100.
