Same problem. No one will help us?
Is there a way of changing the settings so that you can see the file extensions in explorer without selecting the file?

hello folks,
I'm running a TILT with HTC ROM.
I am trying to make some changes to system files located in the
windows directory. attributes are read only and I cannot find a
way to make changes to that. I've searched the forum but didn't
find anything. if anyone knows of a way to delete/change the read only
attribute on winmo 5 windows directory please point me in the right
direction.
thanks!
If the items you are trying to modify are built into the rom, you can see them but they can not be modified.
The items specifically i'm trying to modify are
the 0_in and 0_out files with in the windows directory
that are used for keyboard sliding sounds. i've read
previously about people using customer slide sounds
and just replacing the ones inside the directory with
the newly formed files.
I asked the question more generically incase anyone
else wanted information on the same subject for
different reasons.
update: Changed rom files!
I was doing some digging and I figured out how to
change over files that are baked onto the rom.
I did so by using Totalcommander. which is a shareware
file system. says it also has a built in reg editor
but ive yet to figure out how to open that
feature...if anyone else uses totalcommander
let me know how to start its regediting functions.
I havnet used total commander in a while, but i believe its in a directory "//" with no name.

Click to collapse
Two thoughts - I've got a control panel for the sliding sounds where I can change the sound associate with the slider. Is that not working?
Are you trying to replace the files using File Explorer or something like Total Commander? FE won't do it, but TC or one of the extended file explorers should. Note that you won't really be replacing a file in ROM, and if you ever delete the one you add the one in ROM will "magically" reappear.
If you want to overwrite files in the Windows directory, Resco File Explorer does this beautifully!
Fin
bump...im having trouble editing files on my phone from activesync and i want to know how i can disable the "read only" on these files...can anyone help?
Use total commander
Click on the file properties and uncheck "read only".
Edit or overwrite them
Hello,
I just bought the new HTC Touch Diamond today from Telus Mobility (My Provider) and when I put on a program to install and try to open the .cab file in the File Explorer, it tries to open it in Opera Mobile and I cannot install the program.
I am using ActiveSync to transfer the files from my computer to the Internal Storage area of my phone, then I find the files using the File Explorer on the phone, click the .cab file and it tries to open it in Opera Mobile.
Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. I just tried a Soft Reset, and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance!!
Try to manually rename the files to "whatever.CAB." Add .cab to it and see if that'll get it working.
Hmm..
Okay, I tried that and it didn't work.
I am trying to install a program and the files it has is:
_setup - XML Document (I click on that to activate install?)
ADVANC~1.000
ADVANC~1
ADVANC~1.003
ADVANC~1.004
ADVANC~2.002
Hope this helps..
(Yes, I realize it's not a cab file >.< )
After reviewing the situation over. You are NOT supposed to extract the files, then put them on your phone. Leave them in the archive (.cab file), upload to your phone and then execute it.
It should start installing right away.
Hope this helps for anyone else!!
I have a HTC fuze from att and I m trying to install application that have a .cab ext but no respond when I unzip and copy it to my phone. It direct me to the opera website. What shall I do?
I just bought an att HTC and I want to change the today screen and batter meter to %. Everytime i download a .cab file. i tried both zipping it and putting it on the phone and leaving it unzipped and putting it on the phone but everytime i file search for the .cab file it doesnt even show up on my device. How can i do this? thanks for the help!!!!
thanks
.cab installation...
If the cab is zipped (ie. it has .zip / .rar extension), unzip it on your desktop. If you're not sure if the file is actually a .cab file, right click and select 'Properties' - you can then see the actual extension and file type.
Copy the .cab to your device. Place it somewhere obvious, so you can find it easily (ie. the root of Internal Storage). Then on your device, locate the file and tap on it to install it. If it doesn't install this way, it's either not a .cab, or it's not designed for your device
I am trying to edit the icons in phcanOverbmp.dll, but no matter what i do the device will not use this modified file. This is driving me crazy as i can install and use other peoples taskbars with no issues and i know they have been modified.
This is what i have done so sar:
1 extract the file from a cab that i know works on me device.
2. use the unsign tool on that file, goes ok
3. modify icons ans save file(even i do not do this step it still does not work)
4 sign the file with current 2010 or 2009 certs, says the file is singed, but not timestamped.
5 recreate cab file and install
I have SDKcerts.cab already installed on the device.
I am using standard HTC rom on the diamond2 with windows 6.5
I am on windows 7
The same thing happnes if i try to modify any dll file
Can anyone plase let me know what i am doing wrong...very desperate..thanks
am i the only one with this problem ?
anyone ?? please
Hi,
I used ROM Extractor to transfer a copy of shellres.192.dll onto my PC. Then I used PE Explorer (claims this can read and modify windows mobile EXEs and DLLs, unlike Resource Hacker) to hack 2 windows mobile explorer folder icons. The icons that I replaced met the same image dimensions and bit depth as the originals so no problem there. However, after saving the file again and overwriting shellres.192.dll in my Windows folder, I came across a problem: The icons were changed sucessfully upon loading windows explorer, but my start menu button and some of the icons were missing from the top in my homescreen I don't understand it because I didn't modify anything apart from the folder icons. Maybe PE EXplorer has stripped some data from the original? If so, any ideas on how to fix this problem because I really wanted the XP looking folders on my device instead of the rubbish windows mobile ones. Has anybody had any success in changing their windows mobile icons without affecting any other icons in their phone. I had to restore a backup of my device using SPB Backup after this happened.
Please help!
Cheers
Hi, tozzy,
replacing the icons in shellres.192.dll shouldn't be a problem. I think you did it in the right way. One question for better understanding: have you re-signed the hacked DLL with MSigner? This could cause your issues.

SeCo
Hi SeCo, many thanks for your quick reply! Oh I didn't know it had to be signed, I see now. Would you mind uploading MSigner here to this thread? if you have it as 4shared site isn't working for me . Thanks!
...here you go.
After ending the signing-process the signer will create a text-file with "...but not timestamped. Succeed." If you see this - all is ok.
You can delete the text-file and put the signed dll on your device. Best way: put it into the root of the storage card, rename the original dll (windows-folder) into "...dll.bak", copy the new dll into the windows-folder (using TotalCommander), perform a soft-reset and after this you may delete the "...dll.bak). Enjoy.
Hope it helps -
Ciao
SeCo
btw. - we should talk about the whole truth
There are three steps:
1. Unsign the dll (using unsigner.exe, see attachment)
2. Replace the icons (using ResHacker.exe, as you did)
3. Sign the dll (using MSigner.exe, like I described before)
and after the three steps: enjoy...
Hi SeCo, thanks very much matey that's great . Will check this out later.
