I've flashed my radio ROM before, but I forgot if my text messages survived after it...
They won't survive the flash.
You either need to store them on the SIM or use PIM backup to back them up.
Moved to appropriate forum for better exposure.
PIM Backup is the best. Also read the guide on how to backup your pocket pc. Pretty useful before ROM flashing.

I second PIM Backup.
Just flashed a new rom 10 minutes ago (HDIII Dec 25 build), used PIM Backup, flashed, restored and all my text threads are back.
agreed pim back up saves all contacts task calander n messages to a file for restoring later just make sure you save on storage card and not phone as it will be wiped no doubt
The message conversations between you and your SIM contacts will remain but the message conversations between you and your outlook contacts will be deleted, at least thats how it is when I flash my ROMs

Does Sprite Backup, backup your contacts? I'm not sure of your contacts are stored in the WM6 File system or not anyway. If Sprite Backup doesnt backup your contacts can anyone recommend a way of doing this as I have to many to store on the SIM card so i store them in the phone.
(I did search the forum for this but nothing of use came up)
Here is an easier method with no applications needed.
go to my device and copy the pim file using file explorer and when you do need to get your contacts back, simply copy the pim file back under my device.
If I flash my kaiser rom with a newer one will I lose my contacts, and just need to copy this file back or do my contacts remain untouched?
your contacts will remain the way it was when you copy it.
HUH? So i do need to back them up before I flash the rom or not?

Here is also a good idea. If you have Windows Outlook just sync your phone with that and it will place all of your contacts in outlook. That way when you flash to a ROM of your choice you will always have your contacts saved. That's what I do.

copy pim to storage card and paste it back to my device with your new rom flash.
yes, sprite does back-up your contacts if you specify in it's setting.
but for backing up just the contacts (as my fail-safe plan), i have always used a tiny app called PPCBackupContacts v1.6 authored by the great dotfred which can be found in this forum. it had always worked perfectly 100% each time. you can even select delete all contacts from it and restore the whole database again whenever you please to avoid duplicate contacts when restoring.
i hope this works for you too.

to avoid the shared file error. how do u paste back the copy of the pim file? Pim is locked whenever the phone is on and I can't delete it
I like PIM Backup as well. I use it not only to backup my contacts, but also my call history, ringtones, alarms, and various other custom files and folders. That way, when I flash a new ROM or do a hard reset, I just install my software and then use PIM Backup to restore all my customizations. It's great! And it'll do scheduled backups, so I get a nightly backup without even thinking about it.

sometime i met this issue, i repeat the step to cover pim.vol file with ur backup one ,softreset, and u can make the contact work again
I searched, but i was looking for a program that would back up my call history. any ideas?
PIM Backup
Search for an App Called PIM Backup. (Or Find it here)
question
Here what am wanting to do. I need to save call history but I want to flash to Dutty's new rom. Is it possible to do Pim backup and flash to a new rom?
thanks in advance.
Yep
Install PIM Backup on your Phone, backup whatever you want to a file. Use Active Sync to copy the file to your desktop. Flash the ROM and then use PIM Backup (already installed on Dutty's ROMS) to restore the data from the Backup File.
Personally, I use PIM for Call Hist, Messages, Speed Dials and OneNote Folders. The contacts, calender and tasks are backed up by Active Sync.
All the best with Dutty's Rom.
Hi everyone,
I have an AT&T Tilt and decided to play with ROM upgrading yesterday. Before I did anything, I backed everything up using the included Sprite Backup utility.
Played with a couple of WM6.1 ROMs, liked some things but not others... to make a long story short, I re-installed the original WM6.0 ROM, did a restore with Sprite and all is good, everything restored fine - except all my SMS's are gone! Why? Using Sprite Explorer, I opened the cemail.vol database from the latest backup in Notepad and from what I can decipher from the snippets of text understandable to humans, my text messages are still in there. Copied that cemail file onto the device, SMS account still blank. What should I do?! Please help.
I have a full backup of my 6.0 machine and can't restore it after the wonderful 6.1 upgrade. I'm on an exchange server so emails and contacts are no big deal but I would like to restore my text messages. Can I move these over individually without doing a full restore? I can move the "messaging" folder from the sprite explorer but how do I get them on the tilt? Thanks in advance.
would like to know as well!
Can't be done. Sprite Backup cannot be used to restore from ROM to ROM.
You will need to flash back to WM6, restore your Sprite backup, and then use a program called PIM Backup to archive your text messages.
After flashing WM 6.1 again, run PIM Backup again and restore your text messages.
I thought the latest versions of Sprite and SPB backup could do some ROM to ROM stuff.
Although I personally wouldn't recomment it. UC + ProvXML + my xcopyce app + ActiveSync does everything I need.

They can, but just as you said, it's not recommended. With all the unofficial builds that the ROMs here tend to be based on, it's just not wise to carry any programs over from flash to flash.
A friend of mine upgraded and used sprite (even though I told him not too), is there any way to pull JUST the contacts from the Sprite file??
You can do it. I went from WM6 to WM6.1 and used a backup I did from 6 to restore everything to 6.1.
The only tip I can give you is this.
Do not restore anything in the file system data unless its non application stuff you put there, pictures, skins, browser favourites etc.
My phone works fine I have all my old contacts, mails and pim entries from my old rom. I just re-installed my apps that were on my phone, not my storage card. Anything that runs when the phone is switched on I always install to the phone. I even restored my start menu and found that most of the games and apps I installed to the memory card run fine, they just sometimes require you to re-enter the registration details the first time you run them after restoring.
You are restoring data not programs so it should be fine.
i disabled sms threading in kaisertweak. tried to do restore using sprite again and all my sms messages show up but now i have a text message saying "account locked. company policy prohibits use of text messaging on this device. you ocannot send or recieve text messags."
also when the restore was done i got an error about sddeamon.exe
Thanks funem but when how do you specify which files to restore? When I start it makes sure I want to restore "everything." Also, I have the 10-day trial of the newest sprite but when i try and restore it says the program must be authorized to run. I emailed tech support because the trial says that it should be fully functional throughout the trial period. although its only a $10 upgrade, a free trial run just to get my text's back was all I was looking for.
When you start a restore it should take you to a tree view of the data backed up with checkboxes next to each available branch, just remove the ticks from the boxes where you dont want to restore data.
Can anyone tell me a List of things we need to install
after we have windows 6.1 on the Tilt
Like:
Adv config
Camera cab
KaiserTweak cab
do we still need all these or ........
Using Sprite Backup 1st time:
Here's another "Can anyone tell me?" question:
How long should it take Sprite Backup to run on it's first time?
I went to the program, clicked Backup, it did a reset and came up to the
Windows
Mobile
Version 6.1
screen and has been there for a long time.
How long does it take? Is it hung, or is it working?
Thanks!
EDIT:
I waited a long time, then did a soft reset and it came back and ran properly and reset.
All good, thanks anyway.
How come Sprite backup makes dual copies
of your menu items? After I had restored my Tilt using Sprite and I went to my Menu settings after it was complete..I had duplicate items....and I couldn't uncheck anything?? Calendar, Messages, WMP, ...etc ..etc..

Hi guys, here's the thing:
Yesterday I was given my friend's HTC Dream and told to get the CM6.1 working. Since that she used to have a 1.6 ROM called Bonsai. I was told to get as much data from it as possible. The reason to change the ROM was that the phone was unable to import contacts from a SIM card and some other minor problems, so the girl said that Bonsai is crap and she wants to go back to Donut Of course I suggested the CM6.1 instead. I also told her that we can copy the contacts via SIM card reader, upload them to Gmail and get them back to Dream, but she kinda liked the idea of having a working Froyo on her device, but that's not the point.
So what I did was:
1. Titanium backup
2. Nandroid backup
3. New 2.22.28.25 radio, recovery (recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan).
4. CM 6.1 DS + gapps.
5. Titanium restore.
I restored all of the apps, previously installed on Bonsai, the phone finally started importing the contacts and messages from SIM card, I got all the apps settings and data as well. But I can't get the SMS and MMS messages from the phone's memory back to the inbox...
Is there a way to get them back?
I got the nand backup and the Titanium backup. I didn't set it to run automatically yet, so I think it didn't overwrite the old copy with a new empty one or something Is there a way to recover the messages?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Anyone have an idea?
You are probably hosed. Switching between ROMs sometimes the saved SMS/MMS and Call Log data doesn't get loaded correctly. My guess is they may use a different version (maybe an earlier AOSP release) of the application, so it won't read the backup properly.
I did find other's who's had the problem here.
It does blow, but at least the phone is in working order, right?
EDIT: I was talking with a buddy of mine who dev's for the Vibrant forums (Br1ck'd). He said since you haven't created an additional backup yet, you can go back to the original ROM (Bonsai) and then do a restore. Once the restore is done, use a different SMS backup method (for SMS and for call log) and then reflash to CM 6.1. Then use Titanium Backup to restore all information, and then restore the SMS/Call Log using the respective application.
Thanks for the advice and links, I already though of restoring the 1.6 ROM and trying some other backup method, but I was hoping there is another method.
The CM6 was being used now for few weeks now, so I don't think wiping the call logs and messages AGAIN to restore older ones would be a good idea. Or is it? Will I be able to backup the data (CM6) now, then nand restore (to 1.6), sync the messages in another app (or any PC sync program), go back to CM and somehow sync it again to 'mix' the data?
Or is there any other way to read the messages from Titanium / Nandroid and covert them into any kind of a readable text file? A PC program to read this data from a backup file (without restoring it on the phone) or something?
