Does the ATT version of the Kaiser not have 3.5G? Or am I just not in the correct areas for such coverage?
My downloads on my 8525 were 700kbits/sec, and the 8925 is 1000kbits/sec. I'm happy, but not 3.6mpbs happy.
it's area specific. I have 3.5g in my area but it's still hit and miss. And you will never see 3.6mbps actual speed, 1mbps or 1.5 is pretty damn good for a mobile phone

Yeah i know it wouldnt peak 3.6, but it would be nice to see it get close I use my phone as my permanent internet source... every bit satisfies.
Bah... that wait for new technology coverage continues.
Thanks!
I beleive I've recently started seeing 3.5G in our area. I think it's the 'H' connection, a.k.a. HSDPA which includes rates between 383Kbps and 14.4Mbps.
Metro Philadelphia
I live in the metro Philadelphia PA area, and my phone will reach download speeds of 250-300kb/sec on a regular basis, when downloading large files.
The tilt does supprt HSDPA where available, although I believe this is still usually referred to as 3G, rther than 3.5. 1000Kb/s is about avg for it. I have hit 1.4 Mb/s in my area, I don't expect much higher than that. I am not sure about HSUPA (upload). I know they are rolling it out in some areas but I do not know if it is enabeled on the tilt.

You might want to install KaiserTweak and see if HSDPA is enabled on your phone. It wasn't on mine and I notice a big difference when that H comes on.
KaiserTweaks... Now that I think about it that's why my phone is showing the 'H.'

No, HSDPA IS 3.5G. UMTS is 3G.
I'm really debating -- I like HTC phones and am tied to ATT right now -- it "seems" like missing the 850 frequency is a show stopper and I'd be unwise to buy one. But I see a lot of places advertising them here in the USA -- anyone who bought one haveenough experience to comment on the lack of the 850 radio frequency?
Thanks!
Hello,
I am using it in Canada. Reception is so so. The 850Mhz band is really a big miss...
Philippe
Yeah, like Phil, here, I'm using it in montreal, too. 850 is a big need indeed, but I can live without it. the only thing is we don't get 3G. but since FIDO doesn't give any good 3G service, it's not worth it.
Att in Texas
I live in Dallas and the reception is about the same as with the other band (850).
I went to East Texas to our lakehouse in the country and got spotty coverage, but it is usually spotty anyway. I believe that the reception is only a shade off for me. I use to get 0-1 bar in our lakehouse but now get no reception. The small towns surrounding I get good reception just like the 850 band. I am getting Edge reception but no HSPDA reception. I can mangage without it for now waiting on the USA version. I like the Diamond though. For me it works great and YOUTUBE has been smooth and very clear using a wi-fi here at the lakehouse. Only thing for me that is a bother now is the battery life. Great unit otherwise.
Excuse the language the the phone is badass. Im in Hickory, NC near the mountains, I get signal fade but it picks up right away, I havent had callers compalin about interferance of any sort.
I havent had dropped calls or problems. This area is not a good ATT/Cingular area due to the mountains. There is no 3G service in the area yet, so cant give you feedback on the phone. If you have cash to burn, dont wait. If its a lot of money wait. I've been using GSM luxury phones, and most never hit the US market so a few of them never had 850. Not a big deal to me, as the other US users have said SCREW IT, the phone is too good. Good Luck
My usability in Toronto is ok but I do with I had 850...even if I had no 3g...but alas, what can you do!
I would try it , but on t-mobile I know I would need the 850 to roam. That kind a bread and not being able to roam = no good. It is a deal breaker for me. Would wait for nam or get something else. Had same issue with euro dual. Great phone but no roam= Sold!
How do I find out what this country runs on? Im using Etisalat in UAE.
Thanks

900 (GSM), 2100 (3G)
So is a particular band better than another? How come Etisalat runs on 900GSM while competing company DU runs on 900/1800?

There are limited frequencies. One band can usually support 2 operators, usually the first two operators are given 900Mhz and the next two 1800Mhz. Often one operator has bought out another so they end up with both bands.
At the begining of GSM, 900Mhz was better, because less towers could provide more coverage (the 900Mhz signals travel farther with the same power). But now it doesnt mean much at all. There's no noticable difference at all.
nope oh ya what frequency'?????
Just Kidding....i Live In Lake Thaoe And No Problem With The Att Tmobile Frequency That I Can See.

Hmm i guess it sucks to be in Montreal then. Here in Toronto, 3G reception is great. Well, so-so where i live. Although i get a good 3G reception a block away from my house .

I use tom_condon 1.00.20.05, and have seen the search for 850 in auto, but it seems that tmo only uses it when roaming in SoCal? I think that only NY has 850/1900. The factory rom 1.34.831.1 did not search. I will try att, and that should tell me if the change works.
att works fine in LA in the 850 band. Now waiting for tmo

Missing 850 band?? If you do a search of this site, you will find a million threads on this subject. The 850 band has been available in radio roms since about June, as a matter of fact is available from HTC themselves as part of a ROM update. Try the 1.25.00.05 or 1.25.00.07 or 1.25.00.08 versions in the ROM Development forums. Unfortunately, no 3G. I prefer .07 version for my area of Vancouver, Canada.
Hi! I have a nexus one on AT&T and absolutely love it, but due to cheaper prices and better customer support I am going to switch to T-MOBILE. So is the coverage with T-MOBILE with nexus one 3g issues worth it? How is T-MOBILE service? Please post your speeds and location in the comments. I live in East Texas and get about 2.5 megs with AT&T. Thanks forrest.
I've been with tmobile for about 6 years and their customer service is pretty great but their 3G coverage is a bit spotty in some areas. Personally, I usually have 3G and H speeds and I live in the Miami-dade and broward county in Florida. I can't really give you my speeds because I haven't taken the time to find out but they usually have a map that shows their coverage, though I don't know how accurate they are. Hope I was of some help.
I live in Sacramento and get about 700-900kbps. Nowhere near 2 megs. I've heard of other areas that get much faster speeds (HSPA+ areas). However, I rarely run into an area where I won't pick up 3G.
i live in miami florida, their service is horrible; atleast in my neighborhood. i cant get 70k downloads to save my life.
I just did one quick speed test and I got 1.77 Mbps
Yea I'm picking up my N1 tonight from the FedEx hub since my gf can't answer the door.
I live in Cincinnati OH area and it seems to be good. My neighbor has full bars on his Nexus one and Tmobile, although I don't think he's the type to know his download speed.

I live in Cincinnati as well. The west side of town to be more accurate.
I can agree that for the most part 3G/H is pretty common there are still a decent amount of Edge holes in certain areas.
Overall the connection is pretty good.
My issue is the download/upload speeds on the Tmobile 3G/H network in Cincinnati. It doesn't matter where I go; Downtown, Kenwood, Blue Ash, Milford, Springdale, Cheviot, Northern KY... My speeds are pretty subpar
for 3G+. I get on avg .4-.5 mbps down and .3-.4 mbps up no matter where I am at in the city. This includes being within a football field of an H equiped tower.
They have some major work to do in Cincinnati when it comes to upgrading the networks backhaul.
remember you will have to buy a new nexus one to work with tmobile's 3G. the att version only supports ATt's 3G, and the tmobile only supports tmobile's 3G. so you will need a new phone

This is true. They are setup slightly different to handle that carriers specific 3G/H frequencies. Maybe you can sell yours on Craigslist if you decide to and break even.
That is my plan. Anyone with coverage in Texas? espicaly in East Texas? Also when is the 21 mbps supposed to be released? I am just a little hesitant to jump ship.

I emailed GSM Nation to see when they would received the C6906 because I want to use LTE on AT&T. They sent me a reply saying that many of their customers use AT&T, and have been reporting LTE working.. Are they just blowing smoke up my ass? If not, is there a way to see what bands are active in each cities?

i'd be cautious about buying the C6903 and using it on AT&T in the U.S. I had the international version of the Z earlier in march C6603 and i never got LTE on that phone, only HSPA+. I used this phone in Minneapolis and never saw LTE. I also did a road trip from Pittsburg to Orlando and never saw LTE on the way anywhere. Also used in Miami without LTE.
I believe its important to have the 700 band if you want to see LTE on the AT&T network on a device.

You can use the 6903 model on AT&T, I'm using the Z1 on it right now. But to get LTE support you are correct, you need the 700Mhz band which is in the 6906 model.
Bleh, I had the same concern and called ATT and asked. The guy told me this.
ATT uses 700-1400mhz spectrum. meaning 700 though, not and. So any device that supports bands "in that range" will work fine. Was he misinformed, or is that right? When is the damn xxx6 model coming out anyway?
I'm using the xperia on ATT right now no LTE but I do get hspa+ which is fine (is a 50mbps connection REALLY needed for a phone?) Anyways there is a chance that LTE may work in the US because ATT is rolling out and already has the 1700mhz band in a bunch of cities: Phoenix, Raleigh, San Juan, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Chicago, Charlotte, Athens, GA and College Station, TX. The Nexus 4 people were reporting that it works but not sure about Z1. I'm not from any of these cities so i can't confirm if its working. Maybe someone can?

When it's been shown to give better battery life thanks to race to idle advantages? Absolutely.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6330/the-iphone-5-review/13
>The non-LTE phones see a sharp drop in battery life. At least at 28nm the slower air interfaces simply have to remain active (and drawing power) for longer, which results in measurably worse battery life.
This doesn't work on slower LTE networks like verizon, but for us on ATT we can get better battery life while enjoying faster speeds. Note that in that graph anandtech measures HSPA+ as "3g", as it is 3g, despite ATT and verizon's marketing. I make this distinction to prevent people from thinking they are testing the older 1.4mbit or whatever network they used to use.
I'm probably going to get the Z1 without LTE functionality in my area anyway, because at the end of the day I'm without a smartphone right now (my HTC one got washed with my clothes and doesn't do much other than vibrate when it's plugged in now) and don't want to wait for Sony to stop being lazy and put out the model with 700mhz LTE.

The only reason it improves battery life is because its take you less time to download things which is a given. If you're constantly downloading extremely large files then maybe you need it, but for me not so much.

The answer is yes, they are blowing smoke up your ass. In order for a phone to get AT&T LTE, you need Band 17. That is their primary LTE band. They also supplementarily use Band 2, 4, and 5 in select cities where they don't have Band 17. Similar thread in the Z Ultra forums, which have similar models which might clarify this more if you need more details.

You did not read the source I linked I think. It shows web browsing, not downloading massive files. LTEs speed and therefore race to idle advantage applies to more than just downloading large files, it shows battery savings in normal day to day use, from things that drain quite a bit of battery like browsing to smaller things like syncing gmail accounts.

What speeds are you guys getting on ATT with the C6903? If the C6906 isn't shipping anywhere by midnext week I'm going to order the C6903, I've been android less for 2 weeks now, I'm going crazy. I don't use my phone as a hot spot or for file downloads, so I don't need crazy speeds which I don't even get anyway LTE wise in my area, usually 22mbps max and on average upper teens.

I'm getting 8.22 Mbps down and 1.13 Mbps up with full bars on AT&T right now. I'll do a few more tests to check for consistency.
EDIT: Just ran another test and I got 9.21 Mbps down and 1.13 Mbps up.
I'm full bars on my Lumia 920 here at work, only getting 5/0.6 on LTE so I guess C6903 would do just fine. I only ever get good LTE speeds at home, but I use my phone on my wifi connection there so it's not very useful. Thanks!
I received my Sony Xperia Z1 from GSM Nation yesterday and can vouch for the fact that the 6903 model will in fact NOT work with AT&T's 4G LTE network. I live in New York City too, if that means anything. I spent the entire afternoon trying to connect to the LTE network. Instead, I was able to connect to the 3G (HSPA+) network and that's it.
I am very unhappy about this and will be returning the phone to GSM Nation immediately. I love LTE speed and did not know that battery life was affected by it too (thanks for that youwonder!) so I'll patiently wait for the 6906 model to be released. Does anyone know when that might happen? I can live with my old Galaxy Note II for now I suppose. Agh!

Heres the message I got to the query, about at&t lte from GSM Nation, also asked them about 6906. Edited out private stuff.
"at&t's main frequency for LTE is 700 mhz so the 6903 working is really upto where in the US you live and that is unfortunately not information we would have. It is certainly limited markets for 1700's but these are just reports from customers from our followups.
Regardless we do not advertise it as compatible with at&t due to it being limited markets. And would advise that customers purchase it for use with at&t LTE at their own risk. The c6906 model traditionally comes to carriers first so that would be the safest bet at this time if your looking for at&t LTE. It should be available soon in the US."
seems pretty clear cut.
Sony Xperia ZL C6503 also no LTE

PMFJI. I own the C6506 (Sony branded, carrier unlocked) which support a wide range of bands including LTE IV and LTE XVII, both of which are used by AT&T. In addition, I get PCS 1900 which AT&T is rolling out.
I get NO LTE service and I was told this is by design. If you do not own an AT&T branded phone, the network will not permit you on the LTE network. I am provisioned for LTE but I cannot get even 4G.
This was not explained by anyone and it took me a number of support calls and escalations to learn this. I believe the only way to effect change on this rregressive policy is for people to complain. There is no reason to penalize BYOD customers who choose not to own an AT&T branded device.
My device specs for LTE: 4G Network LTE 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - C6506
Thinking of jumping ship to TMO, for the simple fact I can get root on all my devices. No contract, unlimited everything. Where I am hoping I don't have any issues with service. I am curious to know what the thoughts of everyone. Pro's Con's of switching/staying and or buying a TMO N4 to use on ATT network..

Read through it. Issue I am having is the wife is having better service in some areas where ATT isn't as good. But I am finding that in some cases, ATT is faster in speed tests. TMO has been solid as far as service where I live..
Sucks, cause I can't find a solid answer for the people who have had the chance to try both carriers and who they like best. ATT has a higher over cost, but is that worth "better" service?

FWIW, I've noticed that the spots that I mainly have less than stellar service is through stretches of road away from the major cities. For me, I commute / work / live around a major city, as do my friends and family so it isn't a factor for me. As far as AT&T goes, a few of my friends have AT&T, and I will get better service in spots compared to them and vice versa. I would tell you to try out the T-Mobile test drive option if they still have it. You can try an iPhone or I believe a GS5 for seven days to gauge the service for yourself. As far as I can tell though the service, coverage, and speed are roughly the same in and around major cities and highly populated areas.
take the t mobile 7 day challenge and make up your own mind..
If you do the 7 day T-Mobile thing your credit card will get a hold of $700 plus and if you don't bring the iPhone back in 7 days it will get charged. If that's a issue I think you can buy a cheap phone and test it then return? I love T-Mobile. I had Sprint for 14 years. Now a year and a half with T-Mobile.

The only thing with that is they give you an iPhone 5S, which handles T-Mobile's AWS frequencies quite poorly. If possible, I would take that sim and put it into a T-Mobile branded Android device for better service.
AT&T will always have better coverage as they have their HSPA+ on band 5, 850mhz, which goes way farther than band 4, 1700 mhz. AT&T also has nationwide LTE on band 17, 700mhz.

I'm from the Chicago land area, and I can tell you they're not good. When traveling, only about 20 miles outside the city, my data went from LTE to 4G to E back and fourth. I was also in Des Plaines, IL and data was nothing but weak 4G and E inside buildings. My AT&T phone was always on LTE. Back at home, same thing. Good coverage outside, terrible signal inside buildings. I don't think I'd complain if the EDGE actually worked lol.
For years they had nothing but EDGE at my house, and now its finally LTE (but weak). So they are improving the signals with additional antennas. I just don't think its enough. Not every market will get their band 12, 700mhz spectrum do to channel 51 interference.
I dont know what you are talking about, everywhere in chicagoland that I have been has been great as far as signals strength
And, if you have issues inside your house, just ask them for the FREE Asus ac68 router, and your inside the house signals will be great too
In another thread a person on here said T-Mobile wasn't good where I live. Coverage is great pretty much everywhere I go so guess maybe that person had a dud phone.
Right now I am able to test 2 Note 4's. One on TMO, and the other on ATT. Some areas have been better for ATT, and vice versa for TMO. Speed tests seem to favor ATT a little. But with download booster on TMO unlimited LTE, I think that might edge a head some. I don't travel a ton, the areas I do travel are usually major highways and major cities.. So once I am able to go to a few more places that will give me a better idea of who I want to stick with.

Have you traveled out to Northwest, IN? They've gotten a lot better, but still are weak. I have no desire to use them. Especially now that I have 20GB of data from AT&T for $100. AT&T is miles a head of T-Mobile in my area.
