Hi guys, I just took the plunge and put in an order for a Tilt today; unfortunately the shipping address got botched up so it didn't get shipped out yet. I'm coming from a PalmOS background (Treo 650, Kyocera 7135, several non-phones before...).
Does anybody have a suggestion for an app for tracking a couple users and sharing their location with each other?
I see gpsgate has this functionality, but it doesn't appear to have any mechanism for displaying other users. I'd like to pull up a map and see where another user is, and vice versa. I've compiled a list of what I've found and my thoughts (keeping in mind I haven't used them yet), but wanted to get some real user opinions.
GpsGate - Upload only, no way to see other users from the app?
Reperion - Website seems a little sketchy, but the functionality sounds about right. Not real time?
NavXS - Another sketchy website, but the software looks okay.
Mologogo - Java app only, might work though.
GPS Tuner - Nice looking software, but it doesn't have the functionality I'm looking for. It has a buddy function, but there is no "Google Maps" sort of mode. This looks great for outdoor navigation, though.
chtiGPS This looks to be a bit like GPS Tuner, and again doesn't really meet the requirements.
there is a prog called "WIMP" WhereIsMyPhone. You send a text message code to a tilt or Kaiser and it will quietly return a google link with their exact location. Mainly used to silently ping your lost phone and get it's location, but the buddy angle could be handled with it. http://www.wimp-software.co.uk
Mologogo seems to be your best bet, but I tried the WM version on the Kaiser and I got a nasty message error upon launch. (UPDATE - only the first time). Still it proceeded and find the GPS module OK. Problem is that it's not reading the first digits properly 48,8141 becomes ,08141 - probably a regional setting, I'll
I guess I'm hitting on a topic that has had endless discussions and has just plain been posted thousands of times, so it's probably a big annoyance for most of you; however, I have yet to see a concise and informative post or even a website anywhere that helps me get applications for my first Pocket PC, an AT&T Tilt. So if it's not too much trouble could you guys please help me out here? Please follow this format for each application you post:

For me the best application which in fact has prevented me from shifting to Symbian is SoftMaker's Office.
Category = On purchase. This is a suite of Spreadsheet and word processor.
Positives = So powerful that it can do almost what the PC counterpart can do. I need extremely complex spreadsheets even including conditional formatting and drop down lists. Never once I have encountered a situation where there was a mismatch between the desktop and the device. Round trip integrity of documents is just perfect.
Negatives = Not really many except for the steep price but I guess I do not mind this much as the overall functionality it provides is just great.

Positives: Not just an eBook Reader but SO much more. On my SD card, I have a file containing the whole of wikipedia - it is very, very fast too. [GPS navigation] - around $150, depends on country
Application: iGo MyWay Plus
Description: excellent GPS navigation software
Positives: Best interface that I've ever seen in any GPS software. Extremely convinient and easy to use. Fast, reliable. A lot of infromation on the screen, yet nothing is ever covered by anything, you get the whole view. Has a very large selection of maps. Not sure about others, but California map is very well detailed - last update was in Jan 08 with over 2 million POIs. Nevada map is ecellent too, other states probably the same. Supports TMC, internal/external GPS, speed cameras, excellent voice guidance, day/night skins, various transportation devices, toll road avoidance, and much more stuff.
Negatives: Does not get traffic updates from the web. Rest is minor glitches: If device goes to sleep, it may not return from it if iGo is running (happens very rarely). If phone is on vibrate - switches it to "silent" mode... although maybe this bug has to do with my config/device.

Excellent idea! Should hopefully curb the "Just got my HTC xxx - what programs should I put on it?" posts!
My contributions
[Synchronisation] - £16.00/Free trial
Application: Easy Sync by Pocket Wizards
Description: Excellent program that lets you sync any files from any location on your PC to any location (including microSD) on your PPC
Positives: Much better than Active Sync file transfer. Leave all your files exactly where they are on your PC. Set up a sync partnership for that file using the straightforward wizard and choose where on your device you want to sync the file to. Choose your update frequency and job done - whenever you change the original file, the synced copy also updates. Can set up uni or bi-directional sync, so changes made to PPC version are automatically transferred to your PC file at next Sync. Can be set to trigger when ActiveSync starts up for a fully automated process. Also allows for sync of entire folders.
Negatives: The only one I can think of is that it is compatible with .NetCF 2.0 only, not with 3.5. Other than that, very smooth and stable. Well worth the money.
Rating: 5

[Utilities] - Freeware
Application: GroupSMS
Description: Easy way to send SMS to multiple contacts
Positives: Allows you to choose multiple SMS recipients by ticking the boxes, rather than choosing them one by one. Can set this up for different contacts groups too.

Rating: 4

Innovative design.
Positives: way too many to list. accurate and quick predictive input due to design of two letters on one key, powerful, looks great, excellent support people who will consider your feature requests VERY quickly, excellent value. Still looks like a normal qwerty keyboard.
Negatives: Some people not used to predictive input may undergo a little learning curve. Try it, it's much faster and with this one, it usually has the word you want as the first one so you can just keep on typing!

Pros:
SO, i would like to know from you that are engineers or engineering students, how you use your smartphone/pda for.
I am a chemical engineering student and I've found lot of interesting software, most of them calculators, unit conversors and dictionaries. Beside that, using the pda to organize myself and keep information allways with me is great.
So, if you could indicate some more different softwares i would be very happy. I was looking for some app that gives me data that I usually need old fashioned tables for, like steam properties, or fluids porperties at different conditions. Also, what is the best unit conversor, that allow to convert combination of units. And I believe that there could be even other ways to take advantage of my device.
So, I'm waiting for your opinion and indications.
What I can indicate is Space Time, an amazing calculator for advanced calculations, and Math Tablet that would retire my HP calculator if my device's screen could be more responsive. Also, Lexisgoo is a great dictionary to get god definitions for english terms.
Thanks... best regards
Im a computer engineering major (finishing up second year) and i use it to basically take pictures of circuit designs and email it to myself for view on computer. Im very sloppy by hand
Chemistry Bible, sounds like a good software for [email protected]
http://www.vasantham.net/chemistry.htm
Thanks ekw!
This software should be good for chemical scientists, or at least it would be if I had my PDA on the beginning of the graduation...
Chemical engineers are actually concerned more about industrial process conditions, (transport of energy, mass and momentum) and fluid/solid conditions, most of them physico-chemical. Old school chem. eng. would use a lot of tables for various data.
And I bet you could use more your device. It is at least much more powerfull than any other pocket calculator you have.
At the risk of sounding old...I use the HP48GX calculator emulator on my Hermes. I even have all my custom programs from college installed. It also has the default Engineering Library with basic formulas and diagrams. After some years in the industry, I can tell you I pretty much just use Pocket Excel and the HP48 scientific calculator. I also use Outlook tasks to document everyday activities (very important in today's workplace...) and synchronize them to the PDA to have the answers handy, in case I run into one of those manager types.
What would be cool is to run LabVIEW and Matlab on my PDA. Then I would be invincible

nice!
I've tested some HP emulators... but i've found that they're not so usable since the screen is smaller and the response from the touchscreen is also slower...
I've found other scientific calculators for the PDA that are better, like Math Tablet...
But on class i'm still using my hp 28S calculator (now, that's OLD, it's almost my age but it's still a very nice to use calculator.) that I've got from my brother. Actually, I got my PDA instead of buying another graphic calculator.
Pocket Excel (or better, PlanMaker) is definetly one great tool too, I've used several times already. Matlab and Maple would be awesome, but I've read somewhere that those ARM processors aren't the best for math procedures...
I've just finsihed my Mech Engineering. During my course I mainly used my smartphone for a pendrive. Also for my project guide to check up on my project report using Word and Adobe(not the entire thing of course .) I've demoed a few CAD drawings on it as well. Used the engineering calculator quite a few times. I've video taped a few practical sessions as well for future reference.
Now I'm planning to do my Msc in IT, so bascially I have the C# IDE running and also the MySaifu J2SE JVM, so I can basically test my programs on the go.
I have been using Brett PPCProfiles V3.0 for almost 2 and a half years. I really liked the flexibility in the program as well as the features. Have not been able to find any program that could match this programs features (atleast not by my standards). All good things come to an end, and I wanted to upgrade my profiles feature. I have gone through the free PPC software site but did not come up with something as good as PPCProfiles.
Has anyone out there used a program similar to this? I m most intesested in the feature that syncs your sound profiles with calendar. Also, should have the flexiblity of automatic profile switching depending on day and the time.
I use PhoneAlarm. It is great as it is very customisable with skins, etc etc. It is commercial though. Just Google it. They may even have a free trial I cannot remember.
another commercial piece of software is SPB Phone Suite. Really like the way it handles profiles. There is a 10 day trial or something.
Also commercial but does all of the above is SBSH's PhoneWeaver. In addition to just the sound profile it can also adjust your network settings (Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.), your backlight settings and can execute programs. Triggers can be day/time, calendar status, or ActiveSync/AC Power connect/disconnect.
I'd guess the SPB app is pretty similar.
Thank you all. I'll give the SPB a shot. I heard its reviews from a colleague, he's pretty happy with it. BTW PPCProfile also could also handle bluetooth based on profile but not Wifi, so SPB becomes even more interesting.
Phone alarm is the most advanced of these.
The current version offers the ability to customize everything from the Email/ SMS/ MMS/ IMS programs you use, to your default SIP, full sound-backlight-radio-wifi-push update rate...controlled by time/ appointment category, priority. It will even load new today screen skins based on the profile you want. There are hundreds of skins available.
Simply put, phoneAlarm Pro is the first app I install on any new phone. It is the most important one to me for full control of my phone's behavior.

I agree 100% with this.
I'll +1 on PhoneAlarm. I wouldn't go without the automatic profile switching for work and meetings.. Work is quieter, with some more subtle alerts, and my "meeting" profile is nearly muted and most alerts only vibrate.
Plus other manual profiles, such as (daytime) Car (very loud and bright), Night Car (very loud, but dim backlight), etc etc...
Can't do without it.
Thanks guy, just downloaded a Trial for PhoneAlarm. Giving it a run now....
Something that can do simple basic GPS functions like the original hand helds did. No map needed, can track a path and way points. Most importantly I'd like to use it to measure things... so show me footage from where I start to where I am currently.
I looked at GPS Cycle Computer v3
Which looks like it would be what I want, but it only shows distance in miles... which is way to large of a scale for what I'm looking for.
Anyone have a clue to what I could use?
The Ultimate X2 Rom in my sig has several great GPS apps cooked in, one called turboGPS which is freeware and should be exactly what you're looking for (although a bit of a learning curve)
Val
do u run GPS turbo in parallel to GPS software(i.e garmin)?
in GPS setup, what do you select. Simulation? API? or none?
What tweaks did you also do in Tubro GPS
Couple days ago I instaled Sportypal. It is use a GPS to measure time, distance, speed even calories if you select proper activity as walking, running, cycling, rollerblading or "free stile' where you can do what you like to do without calories of course. Nice clean design, feeling is great....it has pause if you like (no measurment in it) continue, track, compass.....it is FREE
http://www.sportypal.com/Workouts/Details/1649
This is my cycling workout from two days ago. Uploading of workout is by your wish.
The mesurment is in yards up to 1mile after is in miles.

That looks to be a good one, I will definately give it a try and report back
Thanks
Word... I'm definitely looking into that!
I just found out that on sportypal you can upload the gpx file from whereever you want, even if it's not made by the sportypal.
Just upload it and see your stats or analyze your workout. It worked for me, i had some gpx files from before and it put them on the map.
Take a look at Beeline GPS. Works great.
I keep a Holux 1000 always powered up under my car seat so when I'm in the car my Kaiser links to it for GPS needs. That way its instant as soon as the app starts. Waiting on the internal GPS is painfully slow and by using the Bluetooth GPS is doesnt sap my Kaiser's batt.
Beeline it's more for navigation as i can see, and plus it's not free
try visual gps
http://www.acetylated.com/software/mobile/visualgps/visualgps.html
freeware. it is pretty sweet. i think that it is exactly what you are looking for.
Turbo GPS, SportyPal, and Noni GPSPlot are all good options. Noni is probably the closest one to the GPS hand helds of old (still have my old yellow Garmin eTrex). SportyPal works great for walking/workout tracking, butTurboGPS is the most powerful of the three in terms of functionality.
Nav4all? Amaze gps?
Try....there're some simple track functions

I have tried many apps, finally now I am setteled for gpsVP (free). You can download google maps (or satellite) via WiFi or data. The downloaded maps are stored in cache and are prety compressed. It can store the tracks, also show previously recorded tracks.
I have tried gps VP long time ago, it's nice also but it needs some fleshing up. At that time it didn't have any support for the social networks, i don't know for now.
gpsVP is at version 0.4.18 (May 2009) http://code.google.com/p/gpsvp/. Also google for GoogleAK.
