read cab files

is there an app for the alpine that lets you extract cab files from exe.files without using a pc
I think most of the .exe actually contain a Win32 installer, so I believe there is no realy way to extract the CAB from it, apart from running it on the PC.
However, most of the time you can get the CAB on the PC and install it without using ActiveSync. The Installer usually extracts the CAB to C:\Program Files\[Name of Software] or C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\[Name of Software]. Grab it there and store it on your device, then install with CabInstaller for example.
Cheerio !
If you must go hardcore and decompress a cab on your phone, try it with a RAR decompresor. They open on the PC with winrar, but you'll lose file name & structure.
V
Sometimes the PC .exe file automatically deletes the CAB file from the PC & you won't be able to find it on the PC.
If you have an app that behaves like this, run the .exe on the PC & click on OK/Next until you get to the dialogue that asks you 'Install "AppName" using the default install directory?', just after you see the 'Retrieving Device Data' notification.
Now fire up Windows Explorer on the PC and search your \Program Files\ and \Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\ directories for your software developer's name. The CAB files should be inside this folder.
Note: All you need is the CAB file. If there is more than one, make sure you pick the correct Processor type ie .ARM for Himalaya or Alpine, not SH3 or MIPS. You don't need any .ini files either.

Sounds like that file is part of a multipart archive. In order to unzip/rar it you need to have downloaded all the parts and then unzip the one that has a .Zip or .Rar extention. (actually I've never done that on the Kaiser - multi part zips I have only done on the PC, but it may work ok?
Mike
PS
this is not an upgrading matter so it will be moved to the general Kaiser forum

I was downloading this file http://www.pocketemu.com/hhc-info.html the home customizer and is a zip format
OP,
Have you tried copying the application onto your laptop/computer and then connect your Kaiser via your USB cable to your computer/laptop, and try unzipping and installing.
Your computer/laptop should then install the application onto your Kaiser if connected

I understand, however, as the moderator has told you in a more complex manner, not all zip files can be opened as they are downloaded straight onto your phone, unless the required parts are extracted. It normally works for me by clicking on the zip file, which causes all the individual components to be exposed. I then click on the zip and rar files and it downloads with no problems. If this doesn't work, then try it through your computer
Connecting your phone to your laptop/computer via activesync and installing the zip onto your computer/laptop should work
Unfortunately, I can't find my activesync cd at the moment (which I need as I did a hard reset and so need to reinstall mobile centre) and so cannot try out the HTC Customiser app

Thanks for your help. But I have another ? In my Tilt I have a Zip program in the Tools file. What is it for and why I cannot use to extract files?

The zip programme is there for you to download zip files. Some components of zip files cannot download onto your Kaiser as the zip programme only downloads zip and rar files. In this case, you only download the components which the zip programme recognises and allows you to download onto your phone.
Yes, having looked at this a little more, I feel that what you have downloaded is either an incomplete version of the file or a corrupted one. I say this because I have downloaded the Zip to my PC (size should be 2.01Mb). I then moved it in zipped form to the Kaiser and the zip program extracted it without problems. Hence, it is likely it is your download that's incomplete or corrupt. Worth downloading again, it's not unusual for a download done this way to be corrupted.

Installing a CAB (Sorry!)

Hi everyone,
I am trying to install various cab's, the ones that I have tried in the past have been one cab file. I simply transfer it to my phone and open it there.
But... some recent files appear as multiple files after I unrar them, none appear to be a traditional "cab" and I can't work out what to do with the them.
Any advice gratefully taken!
That maybe because you are extracting what you have downloaded.
What extension are they when you first download them?
Give us some examples of the full file names after extraction.
Mike
Hi Mike.
The one file for example is the Intent midlet manager, it shows _setup.xml and files such as loads of JMMFIL after I use winrar on them. Should I not be unraring them and just placing the downloaded file on the phone?
It does show as a winrar file, very confused!
In a stunning turn around of events I am an idiot, no need to extract them at all! Thanks all!
Generally a cab file will be seen by winrar/winzip as a compressed file if you open it on your pc. But normally a cab file should be copied to your phone (main memory or storage card) and run from there - no need to extract.

Not sure what to do with the Zip package you have. But you could always install PocketRar, and associate it with zip and rar files.

most installations create cabs

Whenever I install a program it appears to open a cab on my kaiser.
Rather than running the installers all the time on my laptop, is there a way to find those cabs and just move them to my storage card so I can install them if I am away from my laptop?
go to the installation folder on ur desktop and the cab would be in a folder in there. usually the folder marked 'installation files' or 'resources'..
just look for the cab file.
found some..
but not most ...
Very odd..
If you mean that when you run a .exe on your laptop to install a program on your kaiser, then it is possible to sometimes extract the cabs from the .exe or installer. A program called Universal Extractor can extract over 50 types of files including most installers. It is free, and supports many languages. It even adds an entry to the context menu, so you can right click nearly any file. It will then try to find the appropriate extracting tool, and then if it succeeds, it will place the files in a folder in the same directory as the original file. Try this, it has worked very well for me.

If it helps, I tend to find most of them are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync
