An X1a WWE Radio ROM ?? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thanks to pavelx1 posting a list of officially released ROM's, I've extracted the various components from:
X1a_TELSTRA_AU_CDF1221-3134_R1AA021
1) The ROM is huge - >210Mb - and contains a number of "new" panels like Google plus shareware games and media packages. NetCF is still only v2.0
2) I'm interested in the radio ROM, so I've uploaded 03_GSM.nb as the likely candidate, based on the name and file size (about 20Mb)
dl link is:
http://www.zshare.net/download/547149520f6ea235/
My skills here are still rudimentary, so no clue on how to handle this nb file. I vaguely remember a post from Fards, I think, stating no-one had detailed how to extract a radio ROM - I think this is the nb file of the radio
Is anyone able to analyse this file - in particular to compare with the radio ROM's from the X1i ?
BTW, Telstra is said to have an exclusive supply deal from SE for Aus (because of the 850Mhz UMTS frequency) so I think this is why the ROM has a Telstra brand on it

I'm exploring your file with a hex-editor...
It doesn't look like a radio file to me
BTW you should try the new 1.10.25.18 radio, it's available in the ROMs library, and it was included in the latest NAM R2A WWE ROM

Yes, maybe not, although it seems the right size and is named as ...GSM.nb
No other extracted *.nb file comes close to these parameters.
I had already loaded the 1.10.25.18 radio - seems much faster on a TTFF GPS lock but time and changing atmospherics will test that. WiFi and BT seem unchanged, but were anyway already good.
GSM/3G testing later ...
With the slow release of the X1a devices, this forum is becoming lively

yeah the latest roms all include the same radio by the lookof it.

Yes, well I have read it earlier, makes sense
but
I don't see the relevance to the posts in this small thread
This was simply an attempt to extract the only radio ROM for the X1a currently in Aus for comparison with the X1i ... simply, I have not much idea how to treat this nb file for analysis. Perhaps Telstra's R2 when it occurs will help, maybe not.
The current radio 1.10.2518 seems to work OK on either the X1a or X1i so perhaps analysis of Telstra's R1 radio has no practical value. Still, curiosity generally leads somewhere useful.

Generally, nb files go into the kitchen and get cooked to become delicious nbh flashable files
Kovskykitchen BTW

to make the radio from the nb you bung it in HTCRT.exe and convert it to a nbh.
it is a radio, don't know what version it is though.
:EDIT
run it through windiff against the gsm.nb from the R2 VFUK rom and it's the same file, so it's safe to assume it the 1.10 radio I guess

Thanks mate - exactly what I was curious about. This also means we can now extract the radio roms from official ROM's ourselves (or at least the Telstra ROM's) ... GREAT!!
BTW, the radio 1.10.25.18 released a few days ago (and in the library) is definitely very much faster for GPS TTFF. About 10-15 seconds on my verandah after a soft reset. Using HTC QuickGPS ephemeris data downloads of course.

Yes, I know where they go, but fards actually answered the question above of HOW to treat them - we now believe that the 03_GSM.nb file extracted from the Telstra R1 ROM is indeed the radio rom.

yeah the 1.10 is definitely better radio.
It's a pity that it's a bit lazy at picking up a new signal when the old one's been lost but I'm happy with it.

New WWE ROM available - Radio 1.08.00 - ExtROM 1.22.731 WWE

Hi all,
Just read on another forum today (http://www.pocketpc-club.nl/forum/showthread.php?p=325917#post325917) that there is a new ROM version out for the QTEK9090, released by KPN (large dutch telco), so this should work on all XDAIIs, IMHO...
Here are the details I could gather:
rom version 1.22.00 WWE
date 10/22/04
radio 1.08.00
prtcl 1337.39
extROM 1.22.731 WWE

Interesting to see that KPN has got a hold of radio version 1.08.00.
Any KPN users among us? Can someone post this ROM so we can all have a look at it, and add it to the Wiki collection?

UPDATE: THE ROM IS POSTED HERE:

Just wondering what the differences may be  :?:
I read the same thread... I'm trying to find it aswell
Great! Just last weekend I spent at least 3-4 hours figuring out how to upgrade my SX66 to 1.06.02. Now I have to start all over again. Oh well, at least now I know what the process is....
Has anyone been able to extract the Radio ROM (and possibly decrypt/recrypt) for use on our PDA2Ks? I am curious to see if it improves anything, since 1.06.02 is still not good enough for my tastes.

As soon as I get the OEM ROM, I will tear it apart and, with permission from Peter Poelman, upload it in the kitchen and post here. Stay tuned!
Radio 1.08 ? Very interesting, im waiting for it
Any news guys about radio 1.08?
I have access to a KPN mobile Qtek 9090. In fact our company bought two. But I have fooled around with mine, without being careful enough
So I ended up with 1.0.6 on my device.
However, the other device still has 1.0.8 on it. If anybody can tell me exactly how I can dump the radio ROM, and get my 1.0.8 installed on my device again, I would be very gratefull
Of course I can post the dump here, just tell me how to do that...
does this rom fix the bluetooth issues?

To dump radio ROM you'll need an 64Mb or bigger SD-card, a cardreader (to make an image of SD-card) and read this link:
http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=151&PN=1
To dump only radio ROM you'll need to enter the command "d2s 60000000 00300000" in MTTY. Or you can dump all 3 ROMs (main, radio and extended) if you have time. Instead of NTRW program you may use WinImage to make SD-card image.
Place SD-card image to ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel and I or someone else would extract radio from your image and publish it here.
saqibj. Radio ROM deals nothing with bluetooth or WiFi. It is only a GSM ROM.
Just read on PPCW.net that the XDA III (BlueAngel) that was recently released in Germany has radio 1.10.00:

Don't suppose anyone's got this version yet???

Hi Guys, I am working on it. Only problem is, I only have 1 gb storage cards, so I need a lot of patience and get enormous nb1 files as ntrw.exe seems to read the entire storagecard. I will see how big they are when I zip them.
I am trying my device first (with the wrong rom) just to be on the safe side... I already spent an 18 hour sunday on trying to fix my stupid mistakes...
NTRW just quit with error message: ReadFile(): OWRomFout.nb1 -- De parameter is onjuist
Translated: wrong parameter
NTRW wrote a 991.872 KB file, so I presume not all of it is read?
I will try a second time....
ROM is uploaded
Just look here:

Here is the latest KPN ROM, interesting...thanks to whomever upped it, and thanks OPW for your efforts...!
I will tear out the radio and up it as well.
Cheers,
HappyGoat
Re: ROM is uploaded
I have extracted radio ROM from SD-card image and uploaded it to the same directory. File - 1.08.rar
I have checked, it is really 1.08 radio ROM but I have not flashed it to my device yet. So use this update at your own risk. Extracted extended ROM is also there. Nothing interesting there. OEM_WWE_124_008.sa.CAB contains the same 3500 BT stack and several updated drivers. Someone who has sound problems with BT headset should try installing this CAB, reboot and check the quality.
YOU THE MAN!!!
thanks ...im downloading it now..

I'm making a flasher now, would you prefer plain radio or should I bundle with DES' Hard-SPL? Flashing radio without Hard-SPL can be risky.
Here it is. Use with extreme caution, I couldn't test it yet.
I recommend flashing Hard-SPL before, in fact I'll make a second update which includes Hard-SPL.

Hi!! Many thanks for the quick 'extraction'! I would like to know if this update does a 'hard reset' for the phone? Is our data safe and we do not need to re-install everything again by using this update? Thanks ..
It does only flash Hard-SPL and Radio and should not do a hard reset.
I'll flash 1.38.00.11 back. Coz gps fixs very slow for me (
btw, i made some impovments in my rom.. and got fixes in 2 min with coldstart and after hard reset. And i tested fix with gps tuner wich got it in 15 sec. After stop - start gps it got it in 2 sec. It was with 1.38.00.11 radio
So what's differents between 1.38.00.11 and 1.41.00.11?
Hi,
Flash the last rom radio, gps fix in 10s with this rom after update gps infos with qgps.
How can you do that ?
I don't know how qgps works.
Can somebody explain me ? It takes about 3 minutes to have a gps fix.
GREAT!
Installed,
GPS fix within 20 seconds.

Attached is a list of relevant string comparison between both radios, lines starting with ">" are only on radio 1.41, lines starting with "<" are only on radio 1.38.
You'll see there are some noticeable differences between them
i understand nothing at the changelog but i just want say that this site is definitely an amazing one !!

Yes, I have. I am currently using radio from build 19949. I can definitely say it has better reception in my area. I tried them out before posting them up. However refer to the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455353&page=3 posts: 33-41 for more info.
Here's the link to the radios. I flashed my xperia x1i successfully, but the radio info on the device never changed despite the fact that all the radios had different size and origination: http://www.4shared.com/file/75157477/41406b1f/Radio_ROMs_for_xperia.html
I have already flashed few differents radios from Raphael and Touch HD, they working without any problem. You only need to make NBH file with NBHUtil and make sure in XML of this program there is 0x300 for Xperia radio (orginally Olipro/Cmonex adds 0x301 but it's wrong). If in xml is 0x301 device shoudn't be bricked (if its hardspl) but it will not change the radio.

Thank you for this post - I can see it's significant, but as a lesser mortal I cannot grasp the full meaning, so:
1) Olipro/Cmonex wrongly added 0x301 to ... WHAT, please ?
2) we need to edit the XML of the radio nbh file to 0x300 ? Or some other XML file, or ... WHAT, please ?
Could someone start a radio thread. And make these rádio's for Xperia???

Thank you very much! You answered my question about why after flashing different radio's the version in device info never changed. Now after the xml was corrected, I bricked my device two times soon after flashing the prototype Radio and ATT Fuze one. It tells me that American Rom, supporting the 850 UMTS in ATT Fuze did not like the guts of the x1i. So it very much could be the lack of hardware for it? If only we could try the prototype radio for the same evaluation purposes. How come we cannot flash the prototype rom back on x1i?

Thank you, fards!
Could anybody help on this, please. We would all like to test the prototype radio. It could be a software switch that enables 850 UMTS if there is hardware for it. In prototype Rom there were all UMTS bands listed. After flashing the Att Fuze radio onto my x1i I had to go through the "unbricking" process. It did not like the american radio for some reason.
If anyone knows how to edit and flash the prototype Radio portion on x1i, please give us a hint. The device ID does not match when attempting to flash with radio b19949.
Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you.
The murk seems to deepen.
I still have a simpleton question above unanswered, but now we seem to have people who do know the answer to that question bricking their device, with evidence pointing to a hardware difference.
Perhaps when we have a genuine X1a radio file to compare with an X1i radio file, we may advance.
For sure, Qualcomm's greed is now stuffing up half the globe.

I'd leave it for a bit if you don't know, as it could get messy. When it's sorted then start playing
However from what I understand (can't help myself I like to play)
the xml referred to is the nbhutil.xml in most of the kitchens (including the kovsky)
Sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but it looks like it allows you to "resign" the radio much the same way as hex editing it does. I linked to the discussion thread on that one earlier.

Guys it isn't a problem to modify 0x300, but to change the device ID to be able to flash the prototype at least. Some folks flashed with the similar band Radio's from Diamond or Raphael successfully.
I was not able to flash any American (with 850 UMTS support) Radio yet, nor the prototype radio. We need an expertise on further guidance.

Thank you for the reply. I can easily hexedit a file, but I needed to know which file of course.
I have an X1a on order - supposed to be delivered in maybe 2 weeks. I'm in Aus in an area serviced by the 850Mhz frequency, so I'll be able to give a definitive. When the thing does arrive and everything works out of the box, I'll do a "pcoread" and upload the raw ROM files here.
SE have stated to me in an email that there is no X1a, X1i etc, only an X1. At this point, I'll suspend disbelief. Also the UK retailer I am purchasing from (who has in the past proved reliable and honest) is doing the "funky chicken" about actual supply date, although they say they have stock. I made it very clear to them that if the 850Mhz is crippled, the thing goes straight back for an instant refund ... so we'll see.
HERE´S MY 2 CENTS - HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS:
I have a "european" X1i
I am using my euro-SEX1i on my 850MHz provider: TELEMOVIL-TIGO
I am connecting to 850MHz GSM/EDGE
It "has" the UMTS 850MHz band "listed" in the phone settings menu, but when I manually select it the phone can't connect
I can use 850MHz GSM but not 850MHz UMTS
My ROM version: 1.02.931
My RADIO version: 1.06.25.29
My CPU: Qualcomm 7200A
My Model identity: X1i
My software: "Generic UK"
PS: my provider DOES offer GSM and UMTS over 850MHz, so I am sure it is the phone and not the provider
Found this on the Raphael section: http://rapidshare.com/files/163298875/Raphael_Radio_1.09.25.14.zip
Anyway to convert it to Xperia??
Ok guys, just flashed my Radio. At first I did edit the hex value to 0x300, like described here. I flashed using the default ruu update tool and I got an error, which bricked my device. So I moved to the SD-Card method and flashed directly from it. Same problem - update goes up to 100% and then quits with an error. The device is unusable.
However, when changing just the Raphael value in the nbh file - from RAPH***** to KOVS***** the update worked perfectly fine. I flashed back to the default radio version and now to the newest Touch Pro radio. The new version is not shown in the device information panel, but I can say for sure that it worked. When reception is lost its back in 1 second - before that it took 5-10 seconds. I will report back after using the device outside ...

No radio cab will "unlock" the UMTS 850Mhz frequency in the X1i, in my view.
I've posted on this in the 850Mhz thread - the X1i and X1a have differing hardware (likely the radio crystals cured to specific but differing frequencies) and HTC as assembler have separate production runs, as they did for the Touch HD ... my source for this is a very disgruntled retailer.
It's one on-going result of the Qualcomm patent theft US Court decision, of course.
Improved phone reception however is a big plus though, so I will try it, but the post should have listed the radio version number for the Touch Pro cab he installed. Not doing this just adds to the confusion unecessarily.
Anyway, HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) is UMTS 900/2100 only. UMTS 850MHz is not lised (source: HTC.com and pdadb.net).
Regarding UMTS 850, I guess the HTC Touch Diamond 110's radio (North american version) should be "the one" to try.
Curiously enough, Touch Pro and Diamond 110 have the same Qualcomm MSM7201A chip... but different bands ??
If somebody can provide that radio (from the north american diamond OR even better,FROM THE X1A) then I am willing to try it on my Xperia.
This is the only way to find out if the "european" X1i Xperia is UMTS 850 capable or not.

JADE110 (UK Orange with stock ROM raw links)

great. Hopefully you can add a link to ironeagles more useful thread where he has made an nbh of the raw.
unfortunately, when I first got the Jade, after dumping the ROM, I tried out lots of the roms in this forum. The Asia WWE 721 release over-wrote my radio ROM (my stupidity). Unless we can get it back from the raw files, it is lost forever. Hopefully another person with the orange Jade could try and dump. They have recently been introduced in the UK but hopefully will sell well, so there should be lots around.

New Radio Version 1.14.25.55!!!!!

Just extracted from Latest LAM 1.03.947.15 R2AA015 uploaded by Pavel
Version of radio is 1.14.25.55 .........
I just have extracted it from rom, and convert it to nbh...

You may post improvements...
And if you download and like it say thanks at least....
Already downloaded 1,135 times woooow....
oh wow.. great find fulgore.
have you flashed it?? what improvements do u see???
have you dumped the rom?
Can you post the rilphone.dll from it as well?
If you don't know how to use driverwiz then I'll sign it using that so we can try the two together..
So, has anyone tested them? Do they work well? Results?
Not yet here, but here's the corresponding rilphone (just dumped the rom, despite the date being more recent, the files are all lower version numbers).
file is signed with driverwiz so soft reset and it should kick in..

Good work, fulgore !!
I've flashed 1.14.25.55, results compared with 1.11.25.76:
1) BT, WiFi work OK, seems at first blush more sensitive and fast
2) GPS is excellent, maybe even faster than 1.11.25.76 for TTFF. HDOP is 0.8/0.9m - very good
3) GSM/GPRS in my marginal signal area is only slightly improved (ie. still very crappy). I'm becoming convinced that the X1 metal case interferes with the signal. I haven't used fard's rilphone dll yet
Overall, an improvement
So how exactly did you extract the radio from the LAM ROM file and convert to flashable nbh file ?

I'm using NBH Utility 0.93 ... just re-tried and it works OK too
A Quick Question for anyone in the know:
would this work on the X1a (the NAM) version as well?
Thank you in advance
YES
The radio can be used in a X1a or X1i
and any rom (os)
It doesn't matter...The rom version, but improvement may be different in different roms something to do with rilphone.dll and other stuff...
hi.can someone upload to megaupload or mediafire please!!thanks in advance
