Hi guys,
Im totally new to the android scene.. Just got the phone like literally 30mins ago. I am coming from the sony xperia.. gonna put that aside for a bit while i play with the g1 I got the phone used so, aparently i can already jump into the menu and what not.. Now maybe some of you guys who have already been through the process can tell me something.. Do i need to obtain a unlocking code from one of those sites out there. ( I'm att user. do not have tmobile) Or.... can i simply flash to one of the rom out here and get bypass that?
Simunlock is not related to the build of Android you have installed. You will need to buy a code or ask a friend with T-Mo to obtain one for you.
cool that was quick. thanks. going to get the code from http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/
gotta start doing research on what this sucker can do. hehe
how do you know what build he has? American versions of the G1 can be unlocked for free.

As long as you have t-mobile
Or have proof of purchase... or just call and complain that you will contact the FCC

So I've had my G1 for over a year now. TOTALLY LOVE IT!
AM looking forward to selling it to buy the Nexus One.
In another thread of mine, I mentioned my interest in selling my phone.
Some replies state that I could get more for an UNLOCKED phone. So I called T-Mobile and requested my unlock code.
It arrived today.
My questions are as follows:
The email instructions say, "Insert the foreign SIM card".
My guess is that I can use a friends AT&T SIM card.
1. By doing so, does it render his card useless?
2. Can he put it back into his phone?
3. Does it make the phone not recognize my card?
4. What does it do, to my phone, the process of unlocking (I figure it's sort sort of bypass code - right?)?
5. I know it makes it so that, when I sell it, it can be used on AT&T network. But does it makes it interchangeable?
I know these are newb questions, and I apologize if the answers are 'out there' on the forums. But it seems like everyone is assuming this or that. And/Or lots of questions just are not answered
I just want to make certain my G1 is unlocked.
And be able to prove it to the new buyer, so that they know what all works and is included (rooted, unlocked, several ROMs to choose from, etc.).
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
unlocked G1 ** Cyanogen 4.2.10.1 ** recovery RA-dream-v1.5.2 ** 8GB MicroSDHC **
Unlock allows it to be used on all GSM carriers world wide, since G1 is quad-band. At$t will only give you edge though, since G1 was made for Tmo 3G freqs. You can sell it for under 200 though on ebay, over that and it wont sell too good trust me..Some on ebay are like 120~190 at most. Dont mention the phone is rooted, that voids the warranty and if they need replacement they might say:
Them: I have Amon_RA recovery
HTC: ?
Them: Its from xda
HTC: Sorry that is not our problem good-bye
Dont mention root or roms, thats a secret for the stars.

Thanks for quick response Ace (you're an Ace in my book ) LOL
I sorta figured that mentioning the root is to lure in other Android fans wanting a good phone.
They won't HAVE to root it. I've done all the hard work. or ... I've done all the easy work - ha.
Or does it not make a difference?!

You could just give them a rom like cyan/enom/dwang or something but make sure the version is stable, he's gonna release a new version soon. You could also put a theme so it doesnt look boring.
Yeah.
I'll most likely put Cyanogens newest.
I've always run it themeless, but that's a great idea!
Thanks!
Am I correct to assume that the process of unlocking is a HARDWARE unlock, right?!
So since I frequently test/try different ROMs. I don't have to worry about losing UNLOCK - right?
i beleive so, yes
Cool.
I'll be testing this out tomorrow.
I'll report on my findings.

Unlocking = HARDWARE
Flash as many ROMs as you want it won't affect it.
EFF-ing awesome!
Thanks y'all!
I am going to give my sister my Hero when I get my EVO and I was asking her if she wanted me to keep it rooted and keep the roms up to date and she said yes. When I give her my hero and she takes it to sprint to have them port her # over to it will they have to ruu it to do that or will they just leave the phone alone and punch a few things in on their kiosk things to change the #. Thanks for the help!
Crap. I was perusing the general thread and still though I was over there. Mods please move this to general. Thanks and sorry for my stupidity.

Just demand that they keep it at 1.5; they won't have to RUU, they'll just have to essentially "reactivate" it.
No it doesn't matter if it's rooted at all.
I'm mailing it to her and she isnt the most tech savvy person so she wouldnt know at first if they RUUed it or not because I'm running a 2.1 rom. Im just wondering what they would do if you brought it in and didnt say anything and wanted them to activate it on your number.

I would but I dont really know what I'm doing with phone activation stuff. Only time I've dealt with activating phones is when they are brand spankin' new so I dont really know how activating an old phone or someone elses phone on your number is. Sorry for my lack of knowledge and general noobness on this subject.
Or activate it from sprints website..
Activating by phone is incredibly easy.
If you've switched your EVO to your line already, it's really going to be a matter of her calling and asking to have a swap performed. They'll ask for the imei/esn, possibly have her use an unlock code to reprogram it (although last time I didn't even have that) and then reboot.
Takes about 3 minutes and the service person will tell her what to do step by step.
Just make sure to specify that this is a SWAP and not an upgrade.
Ok sweet. I figured it would be decently easy. Thanks for all the help guys
cant you activate the phone online using the esn if so that would be the easiest way to activate it for her

so how did it work for you?
I have moved his over to the appropiate section and copied and pasted my question.
I am new to this forum and apologize for my noobness in advance as i wasn't sure either to post this here or in the Android Software and Hacking General section and i appreciate any comments as i understand i am new here and have contributed nothing to this forum. Here is my dilemma, i recently purchased a t mobile g1 from a friend about two weeks ago because i was interested in the android OS. Being in the UK it is locked to the T-mobile network which my existing sim is orange. I understand that there was a developers ROM that was released (codenamed holiday (adp 1.1)) which allows other networks to be used on the g1 e.g orange etc as its a developer version. I was wondering what compatible ROMS for the g1 (htc dream) that would allow me to use my orange sim. Again i really do appreciate nay comments and help i receive and understand i have not contributed to this community and it is highly rude to ask for something when given nothing.
Changing the ROM on your device will not unlock it so that you can use it on any network. You need to get an unlock code for your device. T-Mobile US will give these out to their subscribers but I don't know about your carier. If they don't you can get it online too. They will need your phone's IMEI to generate the code. Just put in the new SIM and it will prompt you for the code regardless of the ROM you have.
isnt there such a thing as a hardware unlock though if i use a custom rom?. I brought this phone from a friend so i doubt phoning t-mobile will help get me a code.
p.s. cheers for taking the time to comment
No, I'm fairly sure the only way to unlock this device is what I posted above.
i thought you just needed a t-mob sim to login and then you were free to choose after this whole rooting/flashing thing.
its already a long time ago, so i might confuse a lot and its only that what i think to know. nothing sure..
i wanted an android phone and my friend was saying i culd get his off him and i thought that be a perfect time to get into the android os and stuff, i wasnt ure if i coulld by rooting/flashing that id be able to use another network thats why i wondered if i flashed it to a deveopler rom the adp1 one i could us another sim, i will look into the method beav_35 put but im not sure on any reputable sites to trust to do this method.
This is partly a matter of curiosity and partly a technical question. Since Cox has officially launched Cox Wireless in Hampton Roads, Omaha, and Orange County, we can be a little less paranoid about talking wireless tech.
And there will undoubtedly be some non-employee customers here, though they're all lucky enough to be able to start with the HTC Desire. I'm stuck with the Hero until they come up with some upgrade program for us early adopters.
So who here has Cox Wireless with a Hero?
More importantly, who has Cox with a Hero with CyanogenMod? Can you get MMS? If so, I may have other questions...
No I don't have cox. What is MMS.
lol, no. but a while back when i made a custom splash i remember seeing a great splash modified for cox, so whoever requested that should be on cox as well, here's the thread. cox, lol.

Heh. The only Cox splash I see on that thread is the one I made. Nobody requested it, I just figured I might as well share.
I made it partly because I wanted to "re-brand" my Hero back from generic HTC/CyanogenMod and partly because I wanted to prove I could make a prettier logo screen than our paid developers. Seriously, the Cox logo on the official ROM is tiny and grainy for no apparent technical reason.
And apparently two other people downloaded it.
Two people downloaded Cox.

I *had* Cox wireless with the HTC Hero but I dumped the service and went with another carrier for an Android 2.x phone because I can't even use the Cox HTC Hero for the things I want. Many of the apps I use such as Skype, Firefox, and just recently many Google Inc. apps, Google Voice, PayPal, and many other apps I like, aren't even found on the Market because the firmware is not supported. Its stuck on Android 1.5 and when I asked Cox tech support if there were any plans to upgrade the firmware I was told they have no intentions of upgrading the firmware. I wasn't interested in paying more money for an upgraded phone and restarting my contract from day 1 all over again after I've been on the service for the first year. I still have the phone though and looking to find some alternative uses for it besides selling it which I think ultimately I may end up doing because no matter what I try doing with it, or install to it to make the phone more appealing, I almost always get the error that this program cannot be installed to this phone.
I was considering trying to upgrade it to 2.1 but I'm kind of reluctant because word on the street someone tried and it bricked the phone. Although I don't know how true that is.

This is true. I get the feeling that the Hero was more of a proof-of-concept or beta test phone and they had a bunch of them left over at launch time.

It's doable. Someone I know in one of the stores actually got a laundry list of reasons from the HQ in Atlanta about why we couldn't/shouldn't do it ourselves, so I upgraded to a proper 2.1 HTC Sense ROM just to prove it could be done safely and with full functionality. Then I upgraded it to Cyanogen 2.2 just for the hell of it.
But then I switched to a Desire when they came up with an upgrade program for us employee early-adopters who got stuck with the Hero. My interest in this section now is purely out of scientific curiosity.
ok....Im new to xda and new to rooting a phone but i cant take this 1.5 on the hero any longer and am in deperate need of directions on what i need to do. i was promised by cox that there was going to be an upgrade and now we find out that this will never happen. please help
you need to run the ruu from a computer witch will uprade u to 2.1 or since your still on 1.5 rooting will be easy for u and u can install a custom rom.also if theres a sprint tech store in your area they should be able to do the ruu for you regardless if your on a smaller regional carrier.
There is a small link at the HTCDEV site on the Lower right corner that reads:
Tell us what you want.
Lets go Guys all you have to put there is : unlock the AT&T HTC Vivid !!!!!
Just everytime you remember. go and write that in there and hit send. maybe they will get tired of hearing this and unlock it.
You can throw in a little " You Liars!!!!" in there if you like.

I'm convinced AT&T will not let them unlock it no matter what. Some think it has to do with tethering. No root = no tethering = better for AT&T.
According to my contact at HTC, the whole issue is that HTCDEV.com is a 'sign up for' deal. Basically AT&T hasnt been specifically lying when they say ' we didnt ask them to lock it ', its more, 'we didnt say OK to them unlocking it'....
We need to beat up the bastards at AT&T. I want a copy of that damn agreement they have, since it would show that AT&T has been specifically manipulating the public with fake statements.

I want it too.
Also, I heard that when you use HTCDev, if it works or not, they void your warranty. Is this true? I honestly doubt it's LEGAL to void your warranty if your bootloader is locked.. if this is true, **** HTC forever, and hi Samsung.
I went to it and summited it and then hit the back button summited it again like 100 times already lol I will keep on too don't know if it does anything but if it does all they will see for hundreds of comments is
Vivid unlock boot loader thank you

I think they have more on their mind like why they lost 30% market value last quarter.
I say like the phone for what it is, go figure out how to root it yourself, or just buy a samsung.
This is it vivid is gone! !!

I must say, the longer I have this phone the more I like it, much more than the samsung, this is a nice piece of hardware

i'm new to htcdev and this is probably a stupid question but they have instructions for unlocking the boot loader on phones, does it just not work on the Vivid?
No... when you try to go through the unlock process at the very end you receive the following message: error 170: CID is not allowed
