Greetings!
I would like to know how to have a desktop shortcut for programs i use on my phone desktop i have tomtom installed and in the today screen options under items tomtom is selectable as a desktop shortcut icon.
How would i go about doing this for programs that dont install this option to the items menu?
Thanks for any help
The short answer is that you cannot create shortcuts on the today screen without installing a today plugin like SPB Pocket Plus, to my knowledge. The reason Tomtom shows up in the today plugin menu is because the application has its own today plugin, not a shortcut, which is somewhat equivalent to a gadget in windows vista. You need to find a today plugin that allows you to display your own shortcuts within it in order to show your own shortcuts.

Thanks dave i thought that may be the case i think you can use c++ to write them saw a microsoft page with somthing about it but im not that clever

Simple question, I hope. How do I add to or delete apps from the list on the Items tab (Start / Settings / Today)?
I currently have a list of 9 items, 2 of which are ticked but I can't see how to add or delete from the list.
Not checked items is NOT loaded in memory!
Items can be deleted from registry - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items. Every key under key Items represents settings for one today item - delete it and it disappears from the list in the Today applet.
Thanks. Can you point me to a suitable registry editor?
I guess I'm confused. If the app you're looking for isn't listed in the Items tab for today settings, it's 99.9% likely not to be a today plug-in, so adding it to the list won't help. Even if you did, it wouldn't run properly.
What specifically are you trying to add to Today? If it's an application (like Agenda One) that doesn't have a corresponding Today plug-in (like Pocket Plus or the HTC Home do) then you'll be adding it without much point.
Total Commander CE has good integrated registry editor. Another free PHM registry editor - http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/.
But - every good today plugin has uninstaller and typically there is no need to manually delete items. Be careful and good luck ...
When I installed TomTom it created an entry in the Items list. This was simply a shortcut to itself which appeared at the bottom of my Today screen.
I assumed that you could add any old app to this list and that would make it appear on the Today screen in the same way.
From what you are saying this would appear to not be the case?

On Today screen appear only very special programs ("dlls") with two exported functions. TomTom delivered mentioned special dll.
For other program You want to run from today screen make a link in some "host" Today plugin (Try Great SPB Pocket Plus - http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/?en)

I too have that TomTom shortcut at the bottom right corner of my Today screen. I do see a TomTom registry folder under today items for Today, but under Settings --> Today --> Items, TomTom is unchecked.
So, the question is: how specifically do I remove that shortcut, and how do I add others/another in its place (if I decide to).
FYI, I am using Pocket Plus, Mobile Shell and Phone Suite.
Thx
Update: Sorry for my ignorance. I am still learning WM6. This icon shows that TT is still active and disappears when the program is closed. Palm never had this issue since it can't multi-task.
I was browsing a thread on Modaco (probably this one, maybe this one) and there was an application to remove entries from the today screen item list and it mentions that this could save memory or something (not really why I want to do it - it's mostly because there are piles on my machine and I will never use most of them and I can't uninstall them (some are plugins for an app I use, others I just can't uninstall)).
I don't really want to permanantly remove these items and would want to back them up, but it would be nice if there was a program which was able to relocate the registry keys somewhere else.
If not, I don't mind doing it manually. I assume that I shall need to mess with
HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Today > Items
but if someone can post the details of anything else I need to remember it would be appreciated.
I think that is the only way to do it. Maybe you could make a shortcut directly to "Today" applet so it is a quicker to access?
What you were reading may have been about UltimateLauncher.
It allows you to scroll through multiple tabs of desktops, each one customized with their own Today plugins. What it can do is "Deactivate" whatever plugin is not active. This causes a slight delay when moving between tabs as the plugin is reloaded. However I tried with and without this feature and it only seemed to save 2-3% of my RAM (w/ HTC Home, SPB Weather, MS Live, and one or two smaller ones).
The plugins are disabled on the today screen and I do not often use them. I therefore want to remove their listings as they mostly just get in the way.
The plugins installed include....
Stuff I actually use
SPB Phone Suite
SPB Weather
Pocket Plus
Battery Status
GPRS Monitor
Calendar +
Stuff I might conceivably use
Windows Live
Skype
The following just get in the way on the Pocket Plus "Add to tab" option and on the today item list. I just don't need them there but might eventually need to put them back if a related program complains they are missing.
Standard WM6 I don't use and probably won't ever use
Date
Calendar
Messaging
Tasks
Owner Info
Device Lock
Mobile shell plugins I don't use
SPB Mobile Shell
Home Tab (Mobile Shell)
Time Tab (Mobile Shell)
Weather Tab (Mobile Shell)
Dial Tab (Mobile Shell)
Dial Tab 2 (Mobile Shell)
Dial Tab 3 (Mobile Shell)
Other items which just came installed and I can't de-install
Shortcuts
Running Apps
Meters
Last Call
Windows Live Search
Hence the problem, and I don't think it was related to Ultimate Launcher as the program looked older than that.
So, I'm not sure where the Today applet gets its list...but it is either looking in a folder or in the registry. (I'm sure someone can chime in with the appropriate location)
So, if it is looking in a folder, simply move the items you don't want to a subfolder so it doesn't populate them in the list.
If they are in a reg entry, export the reg entry and then delete the keys. That way you can import the reg entry if you need them again.
As far as I know i have not seen any program that will remove them from showing up as choices.
Also, as far as uninstalling programs that you don't want. Sometimes, though not always you can find a cab of the application you want to remove. Then, install the cab on top of the existing one, so it shows up in add/remove programs and then remove it, thus removing the application. This trick worked on removing some apps from my PPC6700 before I knew how to unlock the ROM.
Alternatively you can open up the cab and find what files and reg entries are used and manually delete them.
I'd recommend using dot fred task manager or CeRegistryEditor to backup \HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items and go ahead and delete whatever you don't like.
If you want to go the extra step, you can also delete the .DLL file as specified in each key. -- Don't delete the DLLs used for the Mobile Shell today plug-ins, as they may be shared with other SPB applications.
FWIW, this isn't temporarily disabling your today plug-ins. It's as close as you can get to deleting them, without deleting the whole application.
Hope this helps.
You might want to give this a try too... (Just found it while answering another thread)

I know there is a program out there somewhere that adds a pretty basic multiple home screen setup. I tried Spb mobile shell but it is not as configurable as I would have hoped...
I basically just want to have HTCHome/HTCHome Plugin on one screen and SBHC Pocket breeze on another, and maybe a third for more in depth system monitoring.
Anyone know the program that does this?
I have looked around and I am having trouble figuring out the proper search terms to define this program...
TIA!

Search for ultimate launcher
Why wouldn't you just put the HTCHome on a tab in Pocketbreeze?

tried that, but it was acting screwy...
I'm trying the ultimate launcher prog now.
Thanks for the infos guys!
I have a wonderful combination of plug-ins
SPB Pocket plus for Tabs (4 total, you can go up to 6) in top of Ultimate launch (can go up to 6 taps)
Some of SPB+ taps are from SPB mobile Shell
Everything works flawless on my TYTN II
Where is the xml located in the main memory of the phone? I came from a Dash and the home screen is usually edit through the Home folder but that isn't so it seems in the WM pro OS. Can anyone point me to the right direction?
More Info Please !
Phone / Rom etc.
If you mean the BS .xml :
Windows -> BatteryStatus
There you find default.xml
Sorry, I'm talking about the actual Today screen and not the programs. I want to edit my own font size, plugins, and etc via the xml. I'm using Tran's Open Touch 5.0UL . For example, I came from using the Dash which runs on Windows Mobile standard. In order to pick out what home screen I wanted, I had to go install the theme in a folder called Home. It runs the theme via xml and if any configuration needed to be changed, that would be the file I go to depending on what theme it is.
I've been trying to find the same thing for days and days myself. I'm used to editing the home.xml file (in\Application Data\Home) on my StrTrk smartphone. Now I've got a brand-new Tilt, and can't figure out how WM6 on the PPC handles the Today screen. I have a much longer version of this question on MoDaCo; 200+ views since yesterday, but no replies.
I've tried 3rd party software to make different Today screens (Wisbar & WAD), but it just slows down the PPC.
Please -- anyone who can tell us the name of the Today screen's file is a hero.
WM6 Pro is a totally different animal.
No xml files to edit unless you use a 3rd party Today Plugin.
To enable/disable today plugins goto:
Start - Settings - Personal - Today -Items
It is a simple checkbox.
If you want to do some custom xml Today screens check out rlToday. Freeware and the capabilities are good enough.
Note: To uninstall permanently any of the plugins check out Today Plugin Uninstaller. Removing the unused plugins will speed up the portrait to landscape redraw time significantly.
Thanks for the hints. But... I'm well aware of how to disable/enable plugins, and I'm trying to do things the hard way; without using plugins.
All I want to know is how the default Today screen gets generated on the PPC. WM6 is very similar to WM5 on the Smartphone, so it looks as if the difference is the PPC.
I switched from Palm to the Sprint TP with WM 6.1 (I love the change). When I had my Treo, there was a program called Sharklinks http://www.ludustech.com/sharklinks/ . It was great. It would create a palm launcher icon (shortcut), that was related to a browser url.
You would click on the shortcut, it would launch your browser, and bring you to the site.
Is there any such program that will work on the sprint TP.
TIA
You have a few options. If you want to access the icon from the today screen, you can add the URL shortcut file as a document to Today plug-ins like Resco Explorer.
You could also drop the URL shortcut into your /Windows/Start Menu directory or /Windows/Start Menu/Programs to get to it other ways.
I made the switch from Palm OS several years ago and am never going back.
use touchflo
as i recall, touchflo 3d displays your favorites from opera on the internet tab under the youtube link!
I guess I am trying to figure out how to create the url shortcut.
I want to set up a folder under the start menu for streaming radio stations.
I then want to setup shortcuts in the folder so that when I click on them the Station starts to play.
Do I just copy the URL, and past in the folder to create the shortcut for that url.
I am a windows maniac, but I am just learning WM 6.1
Bump to the top
bump to top
Is there a way to create folders in the Start menu in WM6.1 Pro? And, to this guy's point, is there a way to make an item in the Start menu be a URL?
I figured my problem out. I was able to click on the radio station links, and they created ASF files in the music folder. I then used Shortcut Creator to create shortcuts to the ASF files in a folder in the programs section of start up.
And to answer JonDeutsch's question: the easiest way is to access your mobile device re: activesync, go to the directory windows/startup/programs, and right click, and new folder.
Hope that helps.
P.S. I still have not figured out how to actually create a URL Short cut that I can put into any folder I want. This community is a great group of developers. This would be a great program to develop.
