I have searched and searched and have found similar problems, but not quite my problem.
About 3 days ago, my messaging started acting up. When I would open my messaging and begin to type a text message, the dialer would come up. Then I noticed that it wasn't really a keyboard problem, because when I wouldn't type anything, the messaging program would just close within 30 seconds. This also started happening with my emails. When I open an email, I get less than 30 seconds to read it before it closes.
Another problem is that when I start typing, I see the first two words and then the rest of the text disappears/comes out invisible. What's up with that?
My final problem is that my emails do not push anymore. I have to manually send/recieve to get my emails. I have it set to every 30 minutes, and I have an unlimited data/1500 txt messaging plan.
I have no idea what the problem is. I am running the stock WM6.1 rom. I have not downloaded or installed any new programs on my tilt. Currently I have 23.71mb of free storage memory and 41.75mb of free program memory. When the problem occurs, there are no background programs running.
I disabled cleartype and auto correct. I read that the reason my messaging(tmail.exe) might be crashing is because the file where my attachments are stored (on my memory card) is corrupted. So I deleted that and my emails are working now. However the text messaging screen crashing after 30 seconds still persists.
The only change that I can honestly think of is that I updated Slick recently and I updated Google Maps to Latitude. I have not made any other changes.
Please help if you can! Thank you.
Wow, no one on here has a clue??? I'm surprised...

I just rebooted, and now my text messages are gone! There's no "text messages" tab under messaging, and if I select a number and hit "send text message" nothing happens. Now there's an "IPM.root" folder in outlook express instead. Everything else seems fine. Any ideas?
What other software do you have installed out of curiousity?
I had a similar issue except that i didn't lose my text messaging, i lost ALL messaging. As in, I hit the button, clicked the icon, nothing happened. I ended up installing Pocket Informant as my default PIM and for messaging I installed Flexmail 2007. They are not free, but I like them a lot. One of the things I like about Flexmail is the pop/imap only works if the program is running. So if I'm sitting at my computer at work I can close Flexmail and not get redundant emails. Text messaging works as normal.
I never figured out why my messaging disappeared and found no explaination from anyone here. I've tried different ROM's, different software.

Do you have the option "store mail attachments on memory card" ticked?
If so, that's the problem.
It happened to me few times while using two memory cards, all you have to do is delete the folder with mail attachments on the card, uncheck the box, soft reset and check the box again( if you want), problem solved.
I did a hard reset last week and decided to give the standard messaging a shot. So far so good, and now that you mention it, I don't have the "Store attachments on memory card" option checked. It's been almost a week and I haven't lost my messaging.
Thanks for the heads up. Now it just pisses me off that I spend $45 on flexmail and pocketinformant when i really didn't need to.
So if it will happen again try to take out the memory card, soft reset, and put it back AFTER IT STARTED - that also worked
I really don't see a need for third party messaging application, the original is good enough.
The only thing that annoys me is unablity to copy-paste text between Messaging and any other programs, for example writing an email in Pocket Word then copying it and pasting to blank email to send it as a text, not word doc.
Does not work for hermes 200

I tried what you recommended but I still do not have text messaging as an option under my message selections. I only have outlook email, MMS, IMAP4 and yahoo. Somehow I have managed to loose the text message selection folder. Do you know of anything else that I can do? Thanks
I've got the ATT Tilt running the original Kaiser ROM. There are a few (small) frustrations I'd like some advice on.
Currently, I'm running FlexMail full time, and PocketCM for a contact manager. These apps are rarely stopped. I have a feeling that FlexMail, PocketCM and the internal Messaging app are conflicting. Every time I receive a notification it comes immediately (tested with friends), but when I try to open a text in any of the three apps, there is a delay of a good 10+ seconds; if I try to compose a new SMS or reply to one, in any of the programs, the phone seems to freeze entirely for sometimes up to three full minutes; even after that, text entry via any method is very slow to respond.
I soft reset my device about every night, just to make sure it's running as quickly as it can. I find that the Messaging problem is persistent even immediately after a reset. My preference would be the have PocketCM quit trying to deal with SMS at all (every time I receive one, it switches to my contact list, and I hate that), and to use FlexMail to deal with SMS (but only if I can figure out how to deal with MMS as well in that app, otherwise the internal messaging is fine).
Also, recently when resetting I get the error immediatly after the HTC Home screen launches: "The file '' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file." I have no idea what this belongs to!
Other information that might be useful - I've added the HTC Phone Pad to the device; I tried Pocket Informant and removed it, and am currently running SPB Pocket (which I will also probably remove). I've installed a number of other packages which I decided I don't need and removed, having kept just a couple emulators, PocketPuTTY, and Opera Mini (latest beta).
Sorry for the long post, but I LOVE this phone - it just sucks when you can't text quickly, my LG VX6000 was better at it *snicker*.. gotta make this thing zippier!
I have a Tilt on Dutty's DualTouch v3 rom. everything has been running fine until a few days ago when I noticed that my Messaging services was unable to open and receive messages. i have clicked Messaging from the Start menu and even through the Today screen icons, yet nothing opens. All I see is the box with the circles loading and then nothing happens. I have had a bunch of people ask me if i received their texts and it seems that not only can i not open Messaging, but i am not getting any text messages or any email from my Gmail account that is synced up with Messaging. Can someone please offer me advise on how to fix this? i would prefer a fix that didn't involve installing another rom. thank you for your help.
No ROM, but no email either
Not an answer to your problem, but I'm having the same issue running on the factory ROM on my Tilt. I haven't installed anything new lately to account for the happening. The most recent install was Opera Mobile, but a quick uninstall yielded no improvements with Messaging.
I'm pretty much to the point of wiping the slate and starting over. Anyone else with this issue?

Whats your provider? Alot of AT&T people have been having issues recently with the data/messaging plan do you have another phone you can plug your sim card into and test?
Problem solved
Provider is AT&T, but I actually found another thread further down my search list:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350862
I actually had two directories that started with 'Inbox.mst2....' and I copied them to my computer before deleting. The first of the two deleted just fine, but the other wouldn't budge until I went in through the File Manager on the phone itself. Luckily enough, I didn't lose any of my messages or emails with all of this.
It could very well be linked to Xpressmail, but that's strictly a guess.

I was hoping somebody would be able to help me :
My TYTN II has been working just fine, but just the other day my email program just stopped working. No matter where I try to open it from, it doesn't open. I can't even receive SMS messages (because it is the same program that handles emails). Also of interseting note is that PocketCM contacts, when opened loads then closes itself. None of my other programs (like Emoze) can access the email box either. I've even tried running the tmail.exe directly from the windows directory, but alas no luck.
Can anybody help?!
Anything would be helpful
same prob here. its not the first time it has happened. the previous times i had to do a hard reset in order to fix it. I do not want to to that again. please help.
If pulling your memory card fixes the problem then the issue is corruption on the memory card. To stop the problem change the setting in messaging so that attachments are stored in main memory and not the card.
Ok, so i had 1300+ text messages between me and my girlfriend this week and i went to delete them because I could tell my sms was getting a little sluggish, but I could not delete them. It kept force closing on me. I tried rebooting the device and still would force close. I figured I would just "wait" this time and not close and I waited ten or so times and then rebooted again. after the reboot the messages were gone. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if maybe there was a way or a program that could auto delete the messages.
ive experienced the same issue while trying to delete a large amount of sms. ive also had issues with it displaying mms. The only solution ive found is to not let my messaging to fill up.
When it trys to force close just keep hiting wait or whatever doesn't close it.....it takes a while but eventually it deletes
yeah it doesn't show the number of messages in a thread with chomp so over the last week i racked up almost 2000 and it took 10minutes or so to delete them all. i closed every other program with task manager and just kept hitting wait.
Yea I just click "Delete Threads" and forget about it. When I come back there's a fore close I click wait and all the texts are gone. "SET IT, AND FORGET IT"
Never let it get over 100 per thread
I noticed if you do that is when you have issues
right now i find it easier to wipe my phone than to try and delete threads of messages, i use more than 15,000 sms messages a month and i just wipe my phone once a month, and run a script on my computer and all my apps are back and on the SD card still, and my messages are gone. i haven't done this in two months and my messeges are getting quite slow. thanks for reminding me to wipe

ok i got 3 words for u. U ARE INSANE !
lol i delete my sms when it get more than 500 or close. and when i did, it tel me to force close or wait, i just force close, and come back, everything is gone
do i smell a sms deleting app necessity?
why am i insane, most of my txts are between me and my girl, i can run a script on my comp and it wipes my phone and reinstalls my apps. right before i go to bed i open the teminal on my comp and run wipe, i wrote a script to wipe, reboot, reinstall apps, it makes my life really easy, when i wake up in the morning i have a fresh phone with all the extra texts and cra gone, plus it saves me from having to delete individual threads like you guys are doing.
@@roguestatuskat if you were to make an app that deleted all my SMS messages at once i would certainly use that, i might not pay for it since my way is pretty mush painless and free, but it would save my cache from my other stuff rather than losing all that once a month
you do relize there is a delete all threads menu option right?
Yea I jus recently had this problem about a week ago I had 1200+ messages from one person and 700+ from another, I jus had to take a L and "wait" instead of hitting F/C, cuz like someone else said chomp doesn't show how many messages u have in a thread... But yea I do think there should be an easier way to delete those messages like that...

15000 SMS month is insane because this means you are averaging a message every 2 minutes every waking hour of your day (30 day month, 8 hours sleep) Assuming it takes you 15 seconds to open SMS and read or type your message you are spending 1/8th of your entire waking life typing or reading texts. That is insane... or at least very impressive in quantity. Especially when you consider that you spend at least some time with your girlfriend and when you are together I assume you are not texting each other. Take in meals and showers and the time becomes even more constrictive.
Whatever makes you happy though.
It's unfortunate because on the Iphone you practically never have to delete sms messages. And even when you do decide to delete months worth of text messages, it takes no more than a second.
There should definitely be a quicker way to delete messages. I honestly can't even believe they shipped a phone that would force close while trying to delete text messages, but what do I know.
i'd really just like to know what folder the messages are saved in so i could try and delete them in terminal and see if that goes any quicker.
wow this is happening to me now.
anyoone know how to delete them faster?
Yea im having the same problem too any suggestions???
I have been thinking on this problem a bit and have a suggestion of sorts. An app could be made to access the SMS provider and delete conversation threads. You do not have to build a whole sms application, just enough to display sms conversations and spawn a background thread to handle the delete. Sms is almost definitely stored in a SQLite database. The problem you are experiencing is due to the fact that the developers did not take into account users with a large number of SMS messages so did not put the delete call in a separate thread. Really it is less efficient in most cases but not when the table gets so large that performance becomes an issue.
The main hurdle I can see in the short time I spent investigating is that the SMS content provider does not appear to be documented. Get a handle to that though and the rest is not too bad. Since there are third party sms apps that share the same content provider there must be some listing of it.
(Typed on my G1 so please forgive typos...)
Deleting 1,000+ threads dont seem to be a problem now and has anyone tried deleting on 1.5?
