first smartphone! need help! - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hey Everyone... I feel like an idiot asking... The diamond is my first smartphone and everyone seem to have all these cool apps in them or whatever you call them haha... and I want them too But I don't know how to install them to my phone... I've read many threads and to be honest I don't understand what anyone is talking about... I came across this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466519 and thought that it would be cool to have this, but I don't know how to put it in my phone....so if anyone would be nice enough to give me step by step directions that would be awesome and I really appreciated it. Thanks

These things generally come as CAB files. You only need to transfer the cab file to your phone via usb then use the File explorer and click on the cab file in the phone to install. If it's not working ok you just uninstall the app from the phone
Special phone mods however might require you to transfer files manually to the phone or edit the registry file or some such. I would advice not to use such mods yet until you are familiar with your phone and how to restore it should something go wrong.
Just read around here on the forums, there are guides to everything if you just look around.

.CAB files
.cab files are files used to install programs
.cab files are similar to what you might know as .exe files from your PC
.cab files can be downloaded directly to your Diamond with Wifi or GPRS, you can also transfer them to your Diamond using File Explorer on your PC
.cab files are not supposed to be unpacked/unzipped on the PC. Copy the intact .cab file as you downloaded it directly to your Hermes
Connect your Diamond to computer via USB cable
Make sure it's connected via ActiveSync
Open File Explorer
Navigate to where your .cab file is stored on the PC
Right click on the .cab file
Chose Copy
Navigate to your device in File Explorer
Navigate to where you want to store it on your device, e.g. \Internal Storage
Now disconnect your Diamond from the USB cable
Click Start -> Programs -> File Explorer
Click 1 -> 2 -> 3 according to the image, if you saved it on the Storage Card

Locate your .cab file and click on it
Installation will start, follow onscreen messages if any
be warned on some Devices (is a Reg setting) the Cab is deleted after Install not necessary if the install was successfull or not!!
This information is in the Diamond_For_Beginners article which can be found in the XDA-Wiki which is on the top menu.
Hope that helps.

How do you edit Quick Launch icons? xml is read only

I want to edit my quick launch xml to point to different apps but the xml file is read only. I was able to copy it over to my pc and edit it, but I cannot copy it back. It says I do not have permission to replace the existing file or delete it. Any help?

You need another file explorer then the default one.
Resco Explorer or Total Commander for example.
With that you can overwrite it.
Where is this quicklaunch xml file located?
Its in the \Windows folder. Ive also posted a similar thread to this. I posted the xml's as well
You can edit xml files with notebook or word, but before click right on xml file then property and uncheck "read only".After you could edit and save your settings.

I have no problem copying the xmls and editing them on my computer. I just can't copy them back. I tried putting them on my Storage Card and then using Resco Explorer to copy them to my Windows folder. It doesn't give me any error, but it doesn't actually replace the file either. I tried deleting the file first in Resco Explorer but it says the file is in Rom and cannot be deleted. Is there another way I haven't tried?
Don't forget to uncheck the plugin before copying files in windows folder.
Uncheck what plugin? The Read-Only property? I uncheck it, but when I hit properties, it's checked again.
the quick launcher must be unchecked in today/items before copying xml files in windows folder

HTC Audiomanager 480x640 here

Hi,
Been looking for a version of the old Audiomanager for ages but in the end gave up and have modified it myself.
This is if anyone else misses it...
I've only tested on my Diamond using Bepe's ROM so please use at your own risk.
Download from here:
Improved version (smaller file sizes + cab update)
www.ziggyred.com/audiomanager-vga.zip
An interpretation in 480x640 or Poorlyduck's skin with both portrait and landscape (shown below) is here:
www.ziggyred.com/pd-skin.cab

}
(old version)
http://www.ziggyred.com/Audiomanager-480x640.zip
Install the cab to your storage card and then install the "update-to-vga" cab to the same folder. This way you will have this version plus the new TF3D version.
Cheers - A.
Fuller Instructions:
(1) Install the HTC_Audiomanager cab to your Internal Storage card!
(2) Install the second cab ("Update-to-vga") to teh SAME FOLDER
Please be careful not to copy to your main Windows folder!
If, when starting audio manager you see "Load RC fail" in the titlebar and nothing happens...
try renaming audiomanager.exe.0409.mui (again in the windows folder on the card) to audiomanager.exe.0407.mui
¨Sorry cant get it to work on my Diamond from sweden
I've tested it again on mine with no problems - what error message or problems do you get?
Doesn't work on bepe's bElite ROM either.
The top bar shows the "Load RC fail" message for half a second and that's all.
And i use original ROM
And doesnt get any error at all.
just wont start.
It works now after I have renamed the audiomanager.exe.0409.mui file
0409 probably only works on WWE ROMs
But there is another problem: The audiomanager only uses a quarter of the screen, the rest is black.
Strange, I'm running it on Bepe's ROM with nothing else on it...
What language are you using? Mine is WWE
Someone has suggested doing this:
"...if i will start audio manager i can see "Load RC fail" in the titlebar...by the startmenuebutton... but the program dindnt start.. .any ideas? ANSWER: ...renaming audiomanager.exe.0409.mui (Windows folder) to audiomanager.exe.0407.mui did the job !
Hi, now you need to copy all the files in the Images folder in my zip file to the Windows folder on your Internal card (where you installed Audiomanager).
Just replace teh existing ones.
This will make the resolution work fine in VGA...
I renamed the ...0409.mui file to 0407.mui because I have the german version of bepe's rom. It should work for you without renaming.
Hi, I think you need to do step (2):
(1) Install the HTC_Audiomanager cab to your Internal Storage card
(2) Copy the contents of Images (not the folder itself) to the Windows directory on your *** Internal Storage Card ***
(you will want to Overwrite existing files)
Please be careful not to copy to your main Windows folder!
If, when starting audio manager you see "Load RC fail" in the titlebar and nothing happens...
rename audiomanager.exe.0409.mui (again in the windows folder on the card) to audiomanager.exe.0407.mui
Use at your own risk.
Still wont work after renaming the file.
I performed step 2 first so the installation has overwritten the files. Now it works fine.
Good job!

Do you get the "Load RC fail" message in the title bar when you try to execute the audiomanager or is nothing happening?
Nothing happends at all.
will give it a try tomorrow at work thou.
Just got it, Ill check it out.
Hi,
I've updated the Set as Ringone and Trim MP3 screens now so whole thing should be properly sized for Diamond VGA.
Cheers - A.
Whats the advantage of this product? worth installing? screens?
Hi, Just type HTC Audiomanager into Google and you'll find hunderds of screenshots.
I suspect if you don't remember it from your last phoen you probably won't want it...
It's a step back for those of us who dislike the new TF3D version.

PLENTY of us dislike the forced usage of a crappy TF#D combined with an old school WMP.
Can you confirm when installing this older version ,it over writes WMP as main player and that AVRCP and A2DP support is working for Bluetooth devices?
Meaning, if you use a bluetooth stereo headset with A2DP control on a Diamond, it only links to Windows Media Player and I (we) hope it will now start-up the known fluent functionality from HTC (old) Audiomanager?
Don't have any BT devices I'm afraid but suspect they will work as this is merely the complete player from the Kaiser.
I simply re-edited the screen xml and pngs and included them in a folder so that it works in VGA format.
As installed on the Internal Card is is NOT a default player but runs additionally to teh newer version.
I suspect default player setting is a reg key somewhere...

Installing applications (i am noob)

Hi, everyone I have one question about applications who have files like this
and I don't know how to install them? i was trying to find this, about 4 hours,,, please help
Its been explained over and over before. Copy the cab`s to your device and run them from the phone. By that I mean the two files who are ending on: .cab The other files in that folder you got by extracting the cab which does not work like that. You need a app like WinCE CAB manager to edit them.
man I still don't get it i can't run eny of these files please write me how exactly i will install apps like that please man please

They are not .cab files, they are .rar files. Copy the .rar files to your phone and un-zip them with pocket rar. And then just click on the resulting cab files and they will self install.
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=820
You done something strange here, I bet you have tried to rename the file? I can see one is ending on .cab while the other doesnt. This means the one you renamed is now called vmvistacab.cab.cab
Download the file, if its packed then extract. Copy the cab (not the .zip or other) to youre phone. Use File Explorer or other and navigate to the place you stored the cab and run it by opening it. Problem here is that you cant separate the cab and .zip cause you have hidden the extension of the files like .zip and .cab Fix this by going to folder options and tick "Hide file extension for known file types" (open a folder then click alt then you can find folder option).

No raiisak, I think the folder is named wmvista.cab after he unzips it. What he neds to do is unzip the original zip file. Then he needs to open the folder and find wmvista.cab and copy it to his phone. He then needs to run the cab file.

Not if he choose extract here.... And its not even certain he downloaded a .zip
I think I remember the file he downloaded. I believe it was a zip. It was in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474919
The mediafire link leads to a download named: wmVistaCAB.CAB.zip so when it is unzipped, it gives a folder named wmVistaCAB.CAB. The CAB is inside the folder. I was also going to install to test it but it is still not complete. The clock does not update, it is just still picture. It looks nice though.

This isn't flashable as i have no idea how to make them flashable through recovery. But it takes about 2 minutes to replace your current boot animation using root explorer or a similar app. If you need help look at the bottom link on my post or Private message me and i'll be happy to walk you through it.
I actually followed all steps. I keep getting the last bootanim that i flashed yesterday. I been breaking my head alllllll day.. ill pm u in a lil.. i can't get anything to load in root explorer over my last flashed anim....

Okay well I'll put the instructions here again just in case anyone else needs them (plus i'll flush it out a bit)
This is again for 480x800 resolution
Installation:
1. get es file explorer or root explorer
2. mount the drive as writable
(with root explorer its just a matter of hitting the button on the top that says "Mount R/W"// with es file explorer you have to go into the menu/settings/root options and check "Root Explorer" and then "Mount File System")
3. take the zip you download here and place it on the root of your sdcard
(I would suggest first looking at your current boot animation and checking the name depending on your rom it may be "bootanimation.zip" or "VZW_bootanimation.zip" or some other variation. You boot animation should be located either in system/customize/resources or system/media or sometimes again a variation. Whatever it is named write it down EXACTLY and rename the bootanimation.zip you downloaded here to match it. Then place it on the SD Card)
4. unmount the drive from your computer
5. go to system/customize/resource (or where your boot animation is stored read above for other possibility) and rename the current VZW_bootanimation.zip to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak to save it just in case (again these files may be names something else like stated above).
6. move the bootanimation.zip you downloaded to the same place as your current bootanimation.zip.bak file ( at this point your old file should have a .bak at the end)
7. restart and enjoy the new boot animation.
I never tried this was. Will report back thank you
sent from evo ....
holy krap i got it.. now to add this zip hold
-- flashable thru recovery -- Android Apple Bootanimation
i tested it b4 i posted it i made sure i didnt crap out my phone and it worked.. SWEEEEEET.. enjoy

If you have root explorer you should be able to just paste it right in. All you need to do is mount the sd as R/W. To do this just click on the R/W button at the top right hand side of root explorer. After pasting it I think you need to change the permission of the zip file as well to let the system access it. You can also do this with root explore.
I'm new on XDA so please press the THANKS button if I was any help. I need at least one thanks to look a bit respectable in this forum.

@topanyel, remember to NOT COMPRESS your zip folder with the bootanimation in it, else it will not work.
