Microsoft...Sad and kind of funny... - Off-topic

Don't know if this got posted already, but thought I would share:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-10169119-75.html
I wish I could ask for my money back every time I saw one of those bluescreens of death in Windows...

I don't think it's funny at all. I would be pissed.

Pretty much every company would do exactly the same thing

They backed off
I read yesterday that the laid off workers will get to keep what they were paid after all. I guess MS decided it wasn't worth the bad PR to get the money back. Kind of too late though, isn't it?

yeah it is kind of too late. however, I believe some of them really didn't deserve the amount they got in laid off pay and none of the news sites brought that up. think about it this way, if your employee got fired after 3 months of working with you, do you think it is fair for them to receive 12months pay as severance when they were only supposed to receive 6 or 8 months worth? after finding out that your HR dep. gave them too much, wouldn't tell tell your HR to get back the overage they paid out?
it is roughly if not entirely the situation, but from the majority of articles and blogs I've read about it refuses to put it in actual context; which end's up being like a double dose of bad PR for Microsoft.
if I were faced with this situation the truth is: I would try to get back my money because in the end it would be unnecessary loss for my company's bottom line.
for an example: 1400 people got laid off, each made $20hr on an 8hr shift 5days a week. that's $800 a week, $3,200 per month, and $38,400 per year (MS workers makes more than this right?).
now 400 of those 1400 workers got over paid; they were supposed to receive 8 months severance but they got 12 months.
so my company has to pay $38,400 to each of those 400 = $15.36 million.
this works out to be $5.12 million unnecessary lose for my company.
WHAT? HR better find back my money!

FREE* Tilts through HTC's website

I just thought that I would pass this along but I can't remember where I found it. You can get a Tilt for FREE* through HTC website. It's actually $250 with rebates and instant savings that bring it down to FREE* but that is only with a new service plan and that excludes contract extensions as well.
You got me. I got all excited there for a sec.
ACtually I don't see anything about a contract.
$250 mail in rebate.
Don't those take a good 3-4 weeks to come to you?
I hate mail-in rebates, especially since they always take 6-10 weeks to arrive, and now they are almost always as a VISA bucks card or some such (not $$CASH$$).
If you are going to offer rebates, then just offer them at checkout - get rid of these damnawful mail-in schemes (or at the very least set it up so you get them in a timely 3-5 business days or such).
Sorry, just my consumer rant-of-the-moment.

They make more money if they do they mail in scheme. Some people just won't get off their backsides to do the extra work to get the rebate.
But I agree with the whole checkout thing.

Trust me. I was very much hoping otherwise.
thanks for sharing. If anyone does go through with this, share the success.
got me too T_T
Mail in rebate is a bit fishy , but hey , put some work and its a good deal.
compare to straight from AT&T , $150 , also with 2 years contract, for a refurbished phone ( 90 days warranty ) . This is a better deal.
@p1 , no luck finding a new tilt yet ? check your local craigslist . unlike the myth I find craigslist is a good place to buy not so popular phone like TilT.
Pretty sure the cost is $99 for refurbs from AT&T now, I just got mine last Friday... Really loving this thing, sorry to hear about your's P1, I remember taking my Clie UX50 swimming with me in Mexico... That was a serious bummer, hope you get a new tilt soon...
You didn't know this?
LETSTALK (http://www.letstalk.com/) is offering all the time some good deals though there may be some strings attached. IF you are a longer term AT&T customer not swapping the phone every 2 years or so shoot me a PM or email I may be able to give you some ideas HOW to get a good deal with them*

No job, bills keep coming in, need advice!

Hello!
I left my night shift job last month and still don't have a job. I'm actively looking for a job, but even then I won't make it to my first pay at this pace.
Is there any way I could make a few bucks at least for gas in the meantime, just so I don't reach the negative balance?
hey sorry about that better times will come.. in the meantime I'll give you my advice and this one comes from personal experience(yes I've had a few rough times, who hasn't?)
Last time I was short on the "thing you use to buy potatoes"(sounds better in portuguese) aka money, I sold something(s) that I had and was not making use of, like my PSP for example. Broke my heart to let it go but you gotta do what you gotta do.
The point is, we always keep things we don't use anymore because we think "well I might be needing this some day" and probably will need that thing again but until then there are more important things one might need.
hope this helps
I have been out of work for 6 months...
are you handy around the house? why not post your talents online (painting, wallpapering, cleaning) on free classified postings...
I lost my job in february due to a work injury, and I was physically unable to do most work with out the use of my left arm. I have healed since then but stopped receiving disability pay in october. It has been 10 weeks and unemployment still has yet to come through and help me out.
I also have sold off things that were luxury items like my ATV and an engine I had built sitting around in my garage. A friend of mine supplements his unemployment doing odd jobs he finds off craigslist and I have helped people move and cut firewood for cash. Hoping the economy picks up locally so i can get back to work soon.
Good luck and look everywhere. Craigslist is a good place to start.
what response have you received from the unemployment office?
Have you gone to them?
If you have, did you show the letter stating when disability payments would start and/or end?
They may be waiting from a response from your previous employer...
I don't get unemployment cheques, but I'm getting a job internview this morning. Thankfully, I don't have many financial responsabilities (college student here), but I could use a few bucks just to close the gap 'till I get a job.
As for putting gas in my car... I got rear-ended yesterday, total loss, and 5 minutes later Staples calls for a job offer!

CA-CHING!!!!!!!
I can already feel your neck stiffening up and a slight loss in feeling both of your pinky toes!!!
Not really, the car took it all so I'm feeling fine, but still. Now I have to get another car with what the insurance company judges my car is worth (360 000 km, but in better condition than anything that mileage).
Trouble likes company

My mother is financially retarded

So i'm making this thread to vent..and ask for advice from fellow XDA'ers
basically my mother planned a trip to visit her parents in china for 20days, but she plans to bring 10,000 CAD and spend it on..well she doesn't even seem to have a idea what she is going to spend her money on.. Now 10,000 CAD isn't that much money.. but the issue comes from the fact that my family is paying mortage, my parent's salaries aren't very high..they are just about enough to cover the mortage and save a few hundred bucks a month.. and from what i'm hearing from my dad it seems that 10,000 cad is all there is in the account..so it seems like a stupid move to take out most if not all of the money out of the bank for a 20day trip, not to mention the fact that she already has a place to live in china..
10,000cad is roughly 60922.30 yuan btw
of course i wouldn't be worried if my mother was a bit more financially intelligent.. but there have been a lot of times when she bought fake "brand name" stuff for an extremely high price.. knowing that theres a lot of that crap in china i'm quite worried
so ya..hopefully you guys would give me some inputs on how to talk her out of being an idiot..
Wtf? Suggest to her she might have trouble carrying that much money with her through customs...
That's not a lie either, here you would get stopped with that much cash... And rightly so.
Failing that, what about the risk of robbery? I wouldn't take that much money with me... And I'm presumably slightly larger and more intimidating looking than your mother...
10k is just silly...

she told me that i have no say in this since i don't have a job(that is true, in some ways) ..
i'm kinda trying to get her to tell me why she would even want to bring that much money to begin with.. but she seems to be in a locked down mode..-.-
and yes..there are actually a lot of theives in china too.. my issue is that nothing i say get through to her.. i think it could be the fact that she's turning to her 50s that's driving her crazy.. for example
she recently tried to get my dad to invest in some middle of nowhere condos that have not been sold despite being up for sale for more than 2 years now.. i tried to talk her out of it back then with no luck, thankfully we didn't have enough money to invest in that place or we'd be in a lot of **** right now.. but this bringing the entire bank account back home crap seems to get to me, considering the fact that it's entirely possible that she succeed and food/services cost 2-5 times less than prices here(after you convert the currency, of course..)
also about bringing 10grand into china..she doesnt plan to bring cash, but she intends to use one of those overseas transfer service..
Overseas transfer services? That seems like a silly idea. I don't know what the fees are, but even if it's 1% of the transfer amount, that's 100 CAD, which is substantial (to me, at least).
Does your mother intend to give some of the money to your grandparents in China? I mean, it is customary in Chinese culture for the children to support their parents.

i understand if she wants to give her parents money, most definitely.. in fact i expect her to be giving away most of that money.. but the thing is.. we are still paying for the darn mortage.. we barely save a few hundred bucks a month yet she intends to take out the entire bank(that we saved up, at least).. which sounds very stupid to me..
woo
talked her out of the crap by telling her that she's going through a difficult time and that if she does this we could have the potential of losing the house
Just hope your mother is good at bargaining and doesn't buy american/foreign brand names, cuz that's just stupid.

Google Opinion Rewards on my Nexus 6

Currently running Pure Nexus Rom 20170121. The last time I received a survey was 12-13-2016. Location mode is set to High Accuracy. I also even went in and changed Rewards from optimizing to not under the battery optimization.
I travel a lot and would assume that I would get one maybe once a week. But it's been so long. I am just curious if anyone else has a similar experience, or if there is anything I can change in order to see some surveys.
Same here.. I went like 3 months with nothing... Then last week I got one, and yesterday.... So they still come, just not as frequent as when first installed.
What u do for a living? I think those surveys are mainly conducted by Google. My guess is amount of surveys you get depends on if your in the target market or whatever product they're trying to push at the moment.
And they'll know if you fit the profile base on the "spying" Google does.
I just got a poll today. I'm on the latest PureNexus. Never had any problems with rewards.
They tend to come with varying frequencies but I get them often enough though. Running stock for what it's worth.
You know what's funny about Rewards? I have it on my N7 that only sits on my tool box at work and goes no where outside that building. Like most of you I would get them once maybe twice a month or not at all for weeks. I put it on the fact I lied to Google and got caught (kind of funny) on one survey early after signing up.
Then two days ago I started getting a bunch of surveys, 4 in a one day, then yesterday I had 25 sent to me. I kid you not. I thought something was broke at Google. The surveys even seemed to repeat to degree with only slightly changes in wording. I keep waiting for a "um we're sorry but something broke we're taking our money back" email from Google. Anyway I got a bunch of cash to give to the great developers here.
I just loaded Rewards to my N6 my to grab this screen shot as proof.
Did anyone else have Rewards cough up a bunch of surveys an money yesterday?

OnePlus Customer Service/RMA

I would like to explain about a situation that I had to go through with OnePlus customer service.
I got my new OnePlus 7 Pro around 3pm today. I excitedly opened the box and turned the phone on. I looked it over and saw something on the back. "What is that?" I thought. Inspecting it closer, I saw a ripple in the plastic foil that adheres to the glass back and gives the shimmery look. It wasn't a huge deal, but still a flaw, and I should have a flawless phone after shelling out 750 dollars.
Ok, I'll contact support.
I called them and spoke with someone that I suspect was in China. She stated that she was sorry for the inconvenience, but I could submit an RMA. Since it was within the 15 days, I should get an email soon with the shipping label and info. The whole process could take a couple of weeks though....sucks but ok, I should get the flawless device I paid for.
About 2 hours later I got an email from Acer whom I guess handles OnePlus's returns. There was not a shipping label. I figured I would contact chat support, surely they just forgot to attach the label.
Well over 45 mins later, they finally decipher what I'm asking for and tell me that OnePlus isn't going to pay for shipping back to them. What? Surely a mistake, right? They delivered a flawed product.
I decided to call. I either got the same exact lady that I had earlier when I called, or they all use the same name, I dont know. Anyways, I explained the situation, and again she assured me that I would not have to pay shipping back to them. She asked me to wait on hold and she would see what the deal is. Welp, 20 mins later she comes back on and says "we are sorry sir but because there is nothing wrong with the OTG cable, you will have to pay for shipping back to us." Ok what the heck, this is about a phone lady, I again gave her my info and she apologized and asked me to wait on hold. Another 15 mins later and she came back on and said, and I quote "I am so sorry sir, but Acer will not pay for shipping back to their service center." I'm like what, I'm talking to OnePlus, this is a OnePlus phone, I want them to pay for shipping back since they delivered a flawed product. "I'm sorry sir, Acer is who handles the returns and they will not pay."
So I asked her to change my RMA to a return instead of exchange. I'll be footing the bill to send the phone back and will never consider another OnePlus product again.
I'm posting this for those on the fence. Just know that if you ever have problems their customer service is a joke. Thank God I was within the 15 day window. The main reason I asked for them to change to a return instead of exchange was the whole time I was thinking....I'm within the window of return and this is how they treat me? What if the ffc goes out? The screen? I dont want to go through it again. Hope this info helps out others. Im sorry I don't get to be a part of this community. I could tell it was going to be a good one. Take care.

Now that I've cooled off, I'm weighing keeping it. On one hand I'm scared of dealing with support if anything mechanically malfunctions with the phone. On the other hand, I've been using Samsung for 8 years straight, and I miss having root and flashing roms.
I'm going to leave the first post the same though, because I think the frustration is warranted and others may be interested to know what it's like dealing with them.
I attached a picture of the defect, its incredibly minor....I wasn't sure that I was even going to contact them in the first place. But I kept saying man, you paid 750 for a new phone it should be without flaws...

Apple has stores you could take the phone and swap it, but I've never dealt with them.
I've dealt with Samsung for their appliances a few times and never had anything this bad. It's hard to even convey in writing how frustrating those several hours dealing with them were. That last call with the lady who mentioned the otg cable was maddening. That 45 minutes was seriously a total waste of time.

I cant believe they dont pay return shipping for something that is clearly a defect. I've returned things to Samsung and given a return label hassle free.
Why did you phone, you should have used the site :
https://www.oneplus.com/uk/support/contact?from=foot
I'm pretty sure the chat agents are in OnePlus and would be much more accommodating.
The most recommended RMA process is to raise a support ticket, then make a post on the OnePlus forum and mention one of the mods who can have someone look at it for you, if it's especially egregious like this issue is then you should get a satisfactory outcome using that method.
Also the reason why buying it from a store is usually better, you can then just take it straight back to that store. Online sales are always inherently more difficult for support.
Hey, man. sorry about your experience. I'm the same way with regards to wanting a flawless device. If there isn't a restocking fee, i would just say to return and buy another one (if theyre unwilling to RMA). It's lame to have to pay return shipping, but this way you can at least save your "RMA karma" for if you really need it. Either way, if you're not happy with it, don't just settle...no pun intended lol

Using that link in USA redirects you to the site I used. Also, the reps I spoke with were OnePlus reps (though not very good ones).
And we cannot purchase from a store here unless we are Tmobile customers. Tmobile requires you to sign up for service if you buy the phone from them.
As far as the method you mentioned about visiting the forums, you may have a point there, but how is that to be known by a new customer? I think it's a good contribution for other users that may be looking this topic up later, so I appreciate it!
I am located in Germany so my experience would probably differ and I don't know what other options and resellers there are in the US.
However, I have ordered my phone to Amazon and there the shipping date is may 31st from the beginning. I know I will have to wait longer, but I just love their service. 30 day return period and I only have to deal with them once there is something wrong with the device. I have been reading horrible stories about oneplus customer support and your case would upset me as well. I honestly wouldn't keep it after spending that much money and send it back. (I will would still get a new one). Being forced to pay anything extra is outrages though.
Luckily, I never had to do any rma with my older oneplus phones yet and I am getting a new one every year. Still, I will stick with Amazon, just in case.

I would be upset too, but Apple and Samsung are going to have the same customer service too.

I had a great experience with Samsung with my wife's phone. Phone was still under warranty and they took care of it right away. They paid shipping both ways and got the new phone in less than 8 days. I have not had any experience with OnePLus customer service but I am not surprised with the experience OP had. I have OP6 and thankfully it runs flawless. When I purchased OP6, it was at least $200 cheaper than comparable flagship phones from well-known manufacturers. In order to sell quality phones at a razor thin margins, usually they cut corners with customer service/after-sales service. I hope OP gets the refund in a timely fashion.
I was being sarcastic, With customer service it's all one of the same though, one person can have a great experience and others not so much like this poor fellow, I used to work for att customer relations and heard horror stories similar to this and some worse, also heard great things for both Samsung, crApple, LG and some not so good. It is really in all who u get, if ur not happy just hang up and move on, BC it could be that person's manager or team lead who does not want to do anything for anyone, there were some like me who would try to help as much as possible, again it comes down to the manager, team leader, call center manager or above. I hope u can get it resolved to ur satisfaction. Just RMA it
I'm in the UK, had to send back a OnePlus 5. Free shipping, got it back within 4 days. Think it went to the Czech Republic. Was about a year ago.
Sound awful your experience though
