restore stock SPL and boot custom ROM? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

may sound stupid but is this going to work?
ofc u have to flash the custom ROM before u restore the stock SPL. but is it going to boot afterwards?

hi there, i think you got it wrong.
you need to flash first the stock os (rom), stock radio then the stock spl.
Code:
extra how to: how to restore Stock SPL for warranty reasons.
step by step:
- this is ONLY for warranty reasons. i.e. the device needs repair and you have to send it to htc to get it serviced. if you plan to restore hardspl then don't even bother flashing this stock package, unless you are some kind of hacker/dev
- IMPORTANT: be sure to first restore stock OS, and stock radio. stock SPL is always to be done last!!
- now the steps
1. download the stock spl package from this post.
2. download X1_HardSPL_v1 too, from this post.
3. run the hardspl package, but do not press Next button i.e do not go ahead with flash yet.
4. at this point, take the extracted stock SPL, a RUU_Signed.NBH file, and overwrite the other RUU_Signed.NBH in hardspl package.
5. go on with the RUU (or if needed, run SSPL-Manual.exe manually, then run RUU when it goes to tricolour screen with 0.52.OliNex version), it goes to 100%, reboots, done.
+1. to verify, enter bootloader (see description above in this post), and check version number on tricolour screen. it should say 0.72.0000.
however, as per your querry, i think its not possible. i haven't tried that yet.
twisted

well im not going to try it since the chance of having a perfect brick afterwards is pretty high. just asked out of curiosity

The phone is stuck on the T-Mobile G1 Screen

Hello guys, this is my situation.
I had a G1 whit android 1.1, these are the steps I did:
1) I install the new radio (latest version) (before, assured me that the phone in the booted mode say PVT)
2) I install the SPL haykuro's 1.33.2005
3) The phone is stuck on the T-Mobile G1 Screen, I remove the batery, put on again and update the CyanogenMod 3.6 rom.
4) The phone is stuck on the tmobile g1 screen again! ... I removed the battery, turn on the phone and stay stuck again.
5) I can enter in the booted mode and recovery mode but I do not know what to do.
which is what I do now?
Thanks for responding
pd:Sorry for the spelling, I do not speak English.
did u wipe before installing the rom?

you are talking about a Hard Reset (alt+w) ? yes, I do it before and after, but the situation remains the same.
use power + camera and reflash dreaimg. your phone is only soft bricked so you can fix this. then after you reflash dreaimg regain root access and follow the flash procedures to image your phone to a non standard build.
Flash to JF ADP1.5 first, See if that works. Is your card partitioned?
why make him flash to a jf build first it's an unneeded step the reason i tell him to reflash rc29 or rc7 is cause it's easier to follow him right from the beginning to make sure he helped to the fullest extent once he regains root access as long as he flashes the 1st radio 2nd spl 3rd non standard build of his choice he's fine flashing a jf build does nothing except add a step that is not needed and makes it more confusing
I reflash to rc7 and can enter in the SO.
Well, I try again to update a rom, but first I make a backup.
Thanks guys !
well, the same problem again.
I install this time:
1) Rc29
2) recovery image + spl
3) JF 1.5 ADP
and the phone stuck in the G1 screen again.
I do not know what I'm doing wrong.
Just a wild stab, did you confirm that the SPL flashed correctly? You would know by booting into it (CAMERA+POWER).
If not, I would flash the radio again (just as a precaution plus its fast), flash the SPL then confirm it has been flashed successfully.
Then grab the JF 1.51 ROM, wipe then flash that.
Is it even possible to jump from RC29 right to 1.5? I would try to go JF 43 than to 1.5
I don't see why not as long as he has updated his radio before flashing JF 1.51. Far as I'm aware JF 1.51 doesn't require additional internal space (that Haykuro's SPL provides). The key is in the Radio before the big jump up in revision number.
If I'm wrong though, feel free to correct me, Its been a very long time since I started out rooting my G1
For history's sake I went from Stock RC8 > Modified RC7 (to root) > Modified RC8 > JF 1.3 > JF 1.51 > Dude 0.8 - 1.3RC2 > Cyanogen 3.5 - 3.5.4.1
ok try this reflash rc7 get root access install the recovery.img flash hard spl
let us know when you get to that point then we'll run some tests
Well, I could solve the problem. Thanks guys !!
I repeat the installation (downgrade, recovery, hardSPL, radio) but this time I install the Dude cupcake 1.2b full, and this time everything went well !
I guess that would make a mistake at any step of the installations. Surely.
But, I have a new problem. When I download any app from de Android Market, an error arises ... "insufficient storage available". (yes, I have space in the phone memory).
which is what I do?

couple of Q about installing the danger spl

k i had to unroot my fone cuz my apns was acting up. so my question is.
right after i update the spl, while in still in recovery
flash the rom that i have on my g1.
then reboot right.
it should have the arrow pointing down right. then followed by the g1 then loading screen.
Whenever updating to the latest SPL do these things first...
- Upgrade your radio to the latest version and confirm that it has been flashed
- Flash the SPL and give it time. Do not pull the battery if there are icons still on the screen. If you do you run the risk of bricking your G1
- Once flashed, check to see if the SPL has been flashed (reboot, CAMERA+POWER)
- If all clear then flash your desired ROM

I think the SPL restarts your phone during the installation. I don't think you get the choice of whether you want to install the ROM at the same time *I think* (I haven't installed the SPL in a while). I don't think its required at any rate. Just reboot the phone into recovery once you're certain that the SPL flashed correctly.
Just make sure you get the radio first, haha. You shouldn't need to unroot because your APN's aren't working, just wipe and reflash...that normally fixes a lot of problems.

both of the times ive rooted and installed that spl i would flash it and it would go to g1 screen twice, after a couple of minutes the second time i just pull battery, put in card reader (or have an extra card handy with a build) and copy a build onto it, then boot into recovery and flash it. its worked twice this way for me...
i have recovery 1.3.1 and if you flash the spl it wont reboot. so should i push the old recovery, then install the spl. then let it reboot, then flash my rom.

well when you install the spl, it will hang on the g1 screen, it needs a build. so oyu have to pull the battery and put a build/rom on the card, then boot into recovery and wipe and flash. At least these are the instructions i followed and it worked both times i did it...dont know if that answers your question. When i did it i think i flashed 1.3.1 after the spl but i dont think it should make a difference...have you read any of the various tutorials? some of them are not good so be careful

Once the SPL is flashed on, you have to physically hit home+back or whatever it is to reset the phone, DON'T SELECT WITH TRACKBALL, or else it won't write anything. Once you do that, it should say writing hbootimg or something then restart. It will appear with an icon on the screen for a few, and I can't stress this part enough, DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY, or you have a paperweight. Once its done doing its thing, it will reboot into recovery on its own.

this is the thread ive followed twice and have successfully flashed the so called 'dangerous' spl twice. Unless I read it wrong it says 'pull the battery' after flashing the spl. Either way it worked

wipe and flash it
but you might want to unroot it if you're sending it in to t-mo
Depends on how savvy they are... If you want to put everything back to stock then you'd have to replace the recovery, SPL, radio, ROM then wipe.
Not sure if they actually properly check the mobile or not so it depends on how drastic you want to pull things back to stock.

RC29 will revert all this to stock, trust me, flash RC29.
Hehe I've not had the need to revert back, but if it does all that then happy days ^_^ Nice and simple.
How to unroot

so all of you that messed something up on your phone and need to get it back into warranty this is how said:
NOTE: if you have flashed a custom splash screen to splash2 then you will need to erase that before step one with this code
plug phone into usb in fastboot mode
Code:
fasboot erase splash2
After that you will have only one splash screen and when you flash the .nbh you will be fine[/B]
1. Get the original SPL for your phone, get it here
2. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your sd card. /sdcard
3. Download the DREAIMG.nbh from here.
4. Place DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card. /sdcard
5. Go into your phones recovery. [Hold the home & power button]
6. Push Alt+S on your G1 to flash it with update.zip
7. After it does its thing, gettig back to your home screen.
4. Start phone in bootloader. [Hold camera+power button]
5. Hit power to start the update DO NOT INTERRUPT!! i can not stress this enough.
6. Click on the action button(track ball) and your phone will reboot.
7. YOU NOW HAVE STOCK FIRMWARE, it will update on it's own in a little bit, or *Settings>About phone>System Updates*

Rooting and installing ROM question - please don't attack!

I know there are tons of guides around about rooting and what to do, I know how to do it and I have with my own phone. However, the guides are mixed, some a little old, some doing ADB which I didn't and I wanted to ask a simple few questions to check before I try to help someone else root their phone.
I'm thinking that this process will work but I'd really appreciate it if others could give me a definitive "yes" or "that'll brick it" type response.
Download Radio and SPL update from http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
Download Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery img
Flash to RC29
Copy recovery image to replace the default using terminal after accessing root.
Install Radio update from recovery.
Install SPL update recovery.
(optionally install a new firmware at this point too)
I know there are guides, I've read them, I know what they say but I don't know if this method would work as it is slightly different and uses the new Cyanogen recovery image whereas others link to an older recovery image and Cyanogen's would mean less steps.
you can you use cyanogen's recovery as the one you put on the phone to begin with. the easiest way to do that is to change its name to recovery.img so when you are in telnet just type the command as you normally would. you can install the radio and spl with cyanogen's recovery image just do not use the trackball, use the keyboard and home and back to reboot. also you have to have a rom after flashing "danger" spl because it wipes the current rom. any other questions. i know starting with cyanogen's recovery will work because i have done it on other people's phones.
Oh right, that's great to know and thanks for the heads-up on the need for a replacement ROM david. If it was my phone I wouldn't have asked but this is to give pointers to a friend so I wanted to be more cautious.
Seems like this would work then..
Downgrade to RC29, gain root access on boot up.
Install Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image and reboot to console.
Flash Radio
Flash SPL
Flash new ROM
Reboot
Is that it or would they need to reboot after flashing the radio then flash the SPL and new ROM? You say don't use the trackball, I know there are ALT+<key> shortcuts so I take it this is due to an issue before you have the new radio and SPL installed.
With regards to the trackball, how would you select one of the options for flashing "any zip on SD" if you can't scroll up and down?
there is a problem with the radio and spl updates not getting written when using the trackball. i have personally noticed it. also when flashing the spl or radio do not reboot from the recovery console as i know that will not write it as well here are the steps i use on someone elses phone.
download all files i need first.
downgrade to rc 29
substitute cyan's recovery for jf's recovery in the flash_image recovery recovery.img command for gaining root access. like i said just change the name of cyan's recovery to plain old "recovery.img" and no change in the commands typed will be needed.
flash radio
flash spl
flash rom
should be it.
How would you flash the three separate files in 1.4? Since it added the ability to flash any zip file if you don't change the name you can use that to pick what you want but I don't think you can select any item without using the trackball.
Or are you suggesting swapping the SD card out, putting each file on as update.zip one at a time and doing it that way?
you should be safe without renaming to update.zip but don't use the trackball to reboot. if it doesn't work just do the renaming to update.zip
When I tried using cyan's recovery in telnet it said it was read-only and I couldn't use it. Any idea why?
terminal su
I have a g1 w cupcake I formatted my 4g sd card did the alt s alt w and alt l went to the terminal emulator typed in su and got permission denied hellllllllp
Sounds like you missed a step before going to terminal.
"After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)"
After you do that bit you go to terminal and connect to localhost. It's worth pointing out that you won't see anything here to show it's worked. You go back to terminal and go from there.
This is a little out dated but it'll help you root. And it has pictures..

OK I'm in need of some help here and the faster the better as I'm talking to my friend via IM. So far we've downgraded to RC29, flashed Cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image and updated the radio. Next is the SPL but when it's applied this error comes up.....
multiple firmware images
can't store hboot image
failure at line 1:write_hboot_image PACKAGE:hboot.img
Instalation aborted
We haven't gone any further yet, halp.
are you doing haykuro's spl or hard spl? try hard spl if it is not already on the phone.
It's the SPL from here which I believe is Haykuro's.
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
The current SPL will be whatever is stock, it's the first time it's been rooted.
try flashing the hard spl first then because i have always flashed it first. http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/HardSPL/update.zip
Alright. Is there any reason why you would want Haykuro's SPL over the Hard SPL?
so you can flash hero and rogers builds. i have haykuros spl but i have whenever rooted a phone i have always flashed the hard spl first, so try flashing it before flashing haykuros spl
Ah ok. I'll keep that in mind. thanks again david. We're gonna give that a go now.
let me know if it works out
OK we had to pop the SD card out to copy the Hard SPL over but now it won't recognise it back in the phone. Is it safe to reboot and go back to recovery after flashing the radio or is there another way to get it to see the card I'm forgetting?
power the phone down, insert the card, reboot into recovery, then flash the hard spl. if it doesn't recognize the card then nothing will happen when you try to flash

G1 problems during first time root.......help

Ok, let me start off by saying my phone is currently not bricked. I can get into recovery(H+P) or fastboot(C+P) just fine. My problem lies with the last step of rooting when I flash the new ROM. I am currently trying to flash v4.2.15.1 which is apparently the latest Cyanogen Mod.
Now I've tried two different methods and both won't boot after the ROM is flashed.
The first method is "method B" seen over at the AndroidAndMe website. This method works fine and I can get back into the phone all the way to the point of flashing the SPL and then the ROM. It installs fine, but after reboot it gets stuck on the G1 startup screen.
The second method is the wiki guide for updating from original OS to Cyanogen. This one is a bit different using the Android 1.6 base image. The installation on this method goes smooth up untill the last reboot after flashing the ROM just as the other method. The difference here is instead of it hanging at the G1 startup screen, it get's just past that to a blank backlit screen. No images, no android logo, no sound, no nothing.
Like I said before, I can still access recovery and fastboot which seams to be my only way out. I have repeated this process multiple times on both methods with the exact same results. Fastboot keeps bringing me back to the Android 1.0 firmware(RC29) which is atleast giving me access to a phone while I try to figure this out.
Suggestions? Ideas? I really need to get this phone working again.
I am always on AIM "DeathstarsOG" if that is more convienient for those offering up some help.
What steps did you take to flash the rom?
Did you read the steps outlined in his wiki? The most important step is to flash DRC83_base_defanged.zip first, then his rom over the top.
dbl post sorry.

I followed the steps on both writeups exactly how they were written. As far as the wiki one, I already had a few of the files needed from trying the Androidandme method. Also, my phone is basically already downgraded to the RC29 so thats another step i can skip. All needed files are already on my SD card and were installed in the following fashion:
DREAIMG.nbh
cm-recover-1.4.img
DRC83_base_defanged.zip
update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed.zip
ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
My SD card is already formatted to FAT32
I set up the telnet to get access to recovery mode, wipe phone, then install DRC83, then the cm-4.2.15.1 and lastly the radio. I do a Home+Back reset after installing the radio and it goes past the G1 Startup screen, to a black lit screen of nothingness.
If you're looking at the wiki guide named: "Full Update Guide - G1/Dream Firmware to CyanogenMod" you'll see I basically am supposed to be seeing a update screen that loos like a open box with an arrow pointed down toward a phone after I do this reboot. Well, that doesn't happen. It just goes to that black screen.
Now I'm not a whiz when it comes to stuff like this however I can figure things out fairly sufficiently for the most part. But this has got me stumped. It sounds like I may have a corrupted version of Cyanogen as everything else I have been able to install and actually run on the phone(besides the DRC83). Or maybe I need to flash the radio before the DRC83? I haven't even gotten to the SPL, and after all this I may not want to.
I've done this process over and over atleast 8 times and I feel like I basically know every step by heart, but I still don't want to just guess at what it could be and risk a brick. So that's why I'm here. What do you guys think could be the issue?
Do not wipe the phone after istalling RC29. nbh file rewrites everything, and I mean it... everything.
Here's your order:
DREAIMG.nbh
Boot, sign-in, obtain root (telnet, connect to local host, you know the shpill).
Flash recovery (use ra 1.6.2, it's more updated then cm 1.4)
Wipe
Flash DRC83 defanged.zip
Flash ota radio, follow directions on the screen, you will need to reboot at least once
Flash 1.6 rom (cyan's is a good one to start at least)
Fix permissions.
Wipe
Reboot
Do not set-up linux swap or apps2sd at this time, it will complicate the process more then needs to at this point, you can do it all later.
Good luck.

You my friend are a genius!
Maybe the write-ups for rooting should be re-written to follow this as it worked flawlessly.
I started all the way back from step one at the default G1 1.6 Firmware.
Downgraded to the RC29.
DL'd telnet from the market.
Installed the new RA-recovery
Wiped.
Flashed DRC83.
Flashed Radio.(promted me to reboot)
Flashed the ROM.
Fixed Permissions.
Wiped again.
Then reboot.
Process went flawless, no hicups or anything. Thank you very much sir!
