shifts snapvue ram upgrading - Shift Development

Hi, i admired shift for his design and there are no such device on market as shift. It is big dissapointed snapvue ram hw. But there is a chance to upgrade it. it will be great step to improve shift. I found some parametrs of shifts flash-ram cip. There is 1Gb flash/ 512 Mb ram chip from samsung K5E1G13ACM-D075. It is 137FBGA package, size 11.5x13x1.2. power by 1.8v flash/1.8v dram. Htc kaiser has KAL009001M-D1YY. It can be chance to replece by this. I found some another equivalent to replace. It it K5E2G1GACM-D060. It is 2Gb/1Gb flash/ram cip, same voltage, 137FBGA, only size is little different 12x14x1.2, but i dont know if it is only cover size, maybe pin size is same. But i know upgrading ram isnt only replace chip, it needs reprogram same other parts and it may do a few peolpe like mamaich with htc univerzal. Do it with our shifts?

I wouldn't even bother looking into it. The memory chips are soldered on by robots and you ought to have a d*mn steady hand a some top of the line equipment to replace it. Also, as you said, you have to reprogram parts of the ROM in order to have WM recognize the new memory.

You are right, soldering by hand is impossible. But look at on htc univerzal ram upgrade. It is possible in almost country in the world. I asked the man, who replace memory for univerzal in our republic and he said, that is possible and they have soldering machine. Only thing is choose right memory chip and maybe some stick pins on the mobo. Everithing else is software solution and i hope that software low hackers help us.

hmm, good Idea, but to expensive? maybe the better way is to find a solution for SD Card Slot enabling within WM side. Or: re-soldering the SD Card slot to WM Side..
So you have much more free Space for enabling additional Software

Htc Tytn ii has stepped up but what is in the furture of the next phone coming next

the htc tytn iii
this thread is for what you want to see in the next tytn iii that will be sent to htc in January
What i hope is that they combine the htc tytn ii with the htc touch dual imagine the possibility
i also hope that htc will add more multimedia features to the htc tytn iii because then it will be the greatest phone.
And a VGA screen for me please.
VGA screen, 600+ mhz CPU, 8GB onboard storage, stronger GPS, 128MB ram, go back to the Wizard/Hermes keyboard slide from right to left, an keep the longer stylus, so much nicer to use than the telescoping style.

the kaiser has 128mb of ram. you wouldnt need to include an already existing feature in your new dream device, only better fetures.
btw i like the way the keyboard comes out much more, the reason is because it's better for gaming and emultors, more are compatible with the keyboard that way.
Give me my IRDA back!
Make the keyboard slide like the Wizard.
VGA Screen.
Anything else will be gravy but taking away the IRDA was the biggest injustice.
Checkout E-Ten M800. The only hope, they will increase to 128 MB RAM, but anything else ... nice

faster cpu. (This was my first windows phone and honestly I was expecting a lot more. It's loads better than my old 6682 but still it's making me keep my laptop that I was hoping to replace with this phone)
faster gps lock times if possible
support for sd or minisd. cheaper and larger storage and shouldn't take up too much room I'd imagine
if they wanted to keep the tilt, have it click lock in tilted position. I find it always sagging down when I'm using it.
make ie able to browse websites while they're still loading. it's terrible right now. hopefully firefox mobile will be great
ccd camera
irda would be nice if it could work as a universal remote
make the touch screen much better. learn from iphone
I hate to say it, but:
VGA screen (or higher res), more built in RAM or at least cheaper flash, faster CPU, lower latency data speeds, thinner design, multitouch... a lot of the things the iPhone is doing. Now, I'm no iPhone fan, but they do get a lot of things right. I'd be super happy if I could get the functionality of a WM phone with the looks and hardware of an iPhone (and a little thicker for a real qwerty keypad).
too bad multitouch is patented by apple, so unless you think HTC is going to license it from them (which they wont) you can scratch that one off your list
I dont understand why multitouch is so popular? It requires you to use your finger, no style. No accuracy. When do you even use multi touch? To make pictures bigger and smaller? What else needs multi touch? Most of the "multi touch" features can be done without multi touch.
Probably not a big thing on this forum, but a nicer camera, ideally with a xenon flash to replace a compact for everyday shooting. After all, if it can navigate, surf and e-mail, why not take pictures?
Bigger screen, even if it means a little bigger size. The E90 and iPhone are good examples of this in operation - less scrolling.

AFAIK, they only patented a method of sensors for multitouch, not the idea of touching two things at once. The latter has been around for 20 years.
The Microsoft Surface table is an example of multitouch technology, they just use different types of sensors than the iPhone. If HTC or some other company develops a way to register multiple touches, then it would be fine.
Although, to my original point, multitouch isn't that big a deal to me. It's more the svelteness of the iPhone that I dig, although it's functionality is severely lacking.
VGA Screen
Faster CPU 600/800mhz
More on-board memory ram & rom for future upgrades without needing to upgrade the device
External Storage (Via MiniUSB for 300gb HDD)
Wizard Keyboard Open (more people use it in their left hand not their right and push up with the thumb ready to type)
Keep the full length stylus that rules over the telescopic one
Camera mode choice of auto focus or normal point and shoot and bring back the flash
Make all utility buttons on the sides the same height as the current (OK) button not like the current camera button and keep the power button lower
Allow more customisation without needing to hack programs.
Multiple SIM card support (Contract & PAYG with call waiting between the 2)
Thats about it for now

They say it's got a lot of RAM. Would explain why it's missing UMTS, HSDPA, a secondary camera and GPS.
However I do agree with you, it would have been nice if our WM6 devices ran as smoothly and were as fun.
A transflective screen... please
It is really stupid of them to not have a transflective screen on the Kaiser.
a radio (FM and ideally AM).
VGA screen
faster CPU
support for full-size or at least mini-sd
VGA screen...I still dont understand why all PDAs dont have them.
+ maybe 256 MB RAM (though I enjoy the "luxury" of 128 MB at the moment
+ somewhat faster processor (e.g. 500, max. 600 MHz --> consumes more energy !)
+ a stronger battery !!! --> 1500-1600 mAh
+ a VGA Display (that of the imate Ultimate 8150 is cool)
+ agreed: Consumer IRDA for use as remote control woudn't be bad, but only optional
+ better camera binaries; a 3 MP for a phone is quite ok, but the camera binary is lagging and should be improved by a quick firmware upgrade
+ separate headphone jack
All in all the TyTN II is by far the most exciting PDA I've ever had.
Lies absolutely smart in your hand and the slider mechanism is gorgeous.
I had the TyTN I before. Nothing to compare with the TyTN II.
All I can say: well done HTC !
Just consider our proposals for future improvements ;-)
And NO !
Not going back to MiniSD or full-sized SD !!!
I have a 6GB MicroSD now in the TyNN II. It works fine.
Only 1 week away from commercial availability of the 8GB MicroSD.
SanDisk will soon also come up with faster versions of the MicroSD series.
So why going back to a form-factor, which wouldn't bring any real benefit (and the MiniSD was only a transient standards, which is dying out at the moment).
Let's use full-size SD for "real" full-fledged digicams and MicroSD for phones and small PDAs !
I've been sceptical about MicroSD in the beginning myself. My biggest concern has been on how MicroSD would catch up in memory capacity with (Mini)SD.
The industry - to my big surprise - understood the market demand this time quite well and sooner than I expected the memory size-factor "exploded".
8GB MicroSD cards initially weren't expected before YE2008 or early 2009.
Now they are (almost) materialized...
12, 16 and even 32GB MicroSD cards are expected in 2008 and 2009.
(Only to mention: for my first digital camera in 2000 I purchased a 32MB CompactFlash card for the price I get today 3x a 6GB MicroSD card.)
I would personally like:
VGA Screen
1 Ghz Processor
8Gb On Board Storage
5mp Camera W/ a flash that actually works affectively
4G data speeds.
Better Audio Speaker
Built In Itunes
Video Conferencing (Front Facing Camera In The USA)
Stronger Bluetooth
Built In Bluetooth Audio Routing
Built In Youtube
I know i'm asking too much but if this were in a phone, laptops are officially worthless to have. This is probably what you'll see in phones in 2015 and then we'll be complaining on how it's too slow and we want more.

5 mm 1.8" hard drive the max?

Did someone manage to change the hard drive already?
I have the full instructions and pictures now and all I need is a disk with a higher capacity. I have found them in stores here, being ATA100 ZIF, 1.8" single platter - so 5 mm in height - drives (80GB).
Other than the capacity that's exactly the type of disk that's in the Shift now.
The maximum capacity of the 1.8" single platter ones is 80GB at this time. 100, 120 and 160GB capacities are double platter drives, being 8 mm in height.
Does somebody know (perhaps the ones that have done the job already) if this 0.3 mm difference matters inside the Shift, or if that would be no problem at all? I can't tell that from the instruction pics.
80GB is nice, but 120GB or 160GB (160GB LaCie LittleDisk, just take the disk out of the case) would be even better, ofcourse.

Can you post the specs of current harddrive (there also in other posts, but to make this post more valuable?)
Please also post the specs and URL of your intended 80GB replacement.
I might order and try
yes that would be a good ideea. untill i dissasemble my shift it would be nice to have a refference point.
no problem upgrading to double platter hard drives. At least in size.
I've opened the shift and yep, there is enough place.

Hi all,
"There is enough place" : Does anyone have already tried to change the hard drive with a double platter one ?
This could confirm that it is possible.
Now for the ones who have replaced it, which models have you installed and work properly ?
Shift's owner since 3 days, I already have only 2 gb free space ! I have to quickly replace my hdd !
Thanks for your responses,
waici
Yesss...
I confirm that there is place for a 120 hdd, the problem is to clone the OS!!!!!

I am waiting for a 100gb hard drive and I think a ghost copy should work fine.
I'll let you know.
As I wrote here :
Upgrading the HDD
BE CAREFUL!!!
I've got my MK1011GAH this morning.
There is space to get 8 mm HDD into the Shift but expect to have to remove some rubber and you won't be able to avoid HDD being in direct in contact with the metalic shields of the WM board.
Also, the SIM reader is slightly compressed, making a little harder to insert the SIM.
Adding to that, the back cover will not be able to be in close contact with the part holding the battery area black sticker (approx. 0.5 mm space, visible at the left side of the SIM reader). Nothing dramatic... BUT definitely, replacing a 5 mm height HDD by a 8 mm one into a Shift is a challenge!
Basically, I don't recommend you to do it. Pressure on the WM part, lower vibration protection by removing significant part of the rubber, constraints on the casing...
(By the way, my 100GB HDD is faulty. Asking for RMA... )

Ferrett,
I'm surprised you didn't report this "space" problem. Your comments?
One thing I found when I had my Shift tore down is this; I have the 3G/GSM version and I found that the device that holds the SIM card sticks up and prevents me from putting in a Toshiba MK8009GAH 80gig drive that I have due to is is just a little thicker than the MK4009GAL drive currently in the Shift. The HDD ribbon cable fit just fine. If I had been able to get the case to close all the way I imagine I would of had an 80gig Shift.
So has anyone found a larger drive the same thickness of the MK4009GAL?
CowboyJoe,
I second that : 8 mm height HDD don't fit properly the Shift. Most pressure applied on the SIM card reader, indeed. Not heathly at all, I would say.
Unfortunately, as of today, anything above 40GB 1.8' HDD is 8mm height...
The only alternative could be 1.8' SSD drives (I'm not sure about the size, btw) but they are not yet widely available and tremendously expensive! See this thread

Samsung MCCOE64GEMPP
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productInfo.do?fmly_id=161&partnum=MCCOE64GEMPP
I've had my eye on that one as well. I'm pretty confident it will work, but I'm interested in the opinions of others.
I've come to the conclusion that an SSD is the way to go. Power consumption, according to the Samsung specs, appears to be one-half of a standard drive. And the performance specs are ridiculous. With only 1GB of RAM and Vista, the page file is constantly being accessed. I'm thinking the SSD will provide noticeable improvements in both responsiveness and battery life.
The downsides are price (~$1000USD) and capacity. I have read that Intel will release their SSDs in Q3. Initially, they will have a 1.8" 80GB and later a 120GB version. This could potentially drop the cost of the current 64GB drives by half. I've decided to wait awhile. Otherwise it could feel alot like like burning a $100 bill every month for the next 5 months...

ram?

nothing about 2gb ram? i think that with vista we need it!
The Micro-DIMM manufacturer (Qimonda) doesn't have 2GB model available yet. There are some threads about this topic. Go for search.
But I definitely agree with you regarding Vista minimum requirements for usability...
Definitely 2GB+ is needed. I've searched exhaustively and not found a suitable memory upgrade. Given the recent considerations against 8mm HDDs, the current lack of availabilty of bigger RAM (and if/when it does come out, it will likely be very expensive), and the general desire for longer battery and better performance, a 64GB SSD (even at $1000) is starting to look very attractive to me. I guess I need to get busy selling my superceded electronics on ebay to offset the $$$.
I have upgraded mine to 64gb SSD. (got it off my portege r500) and swapped them. Now it works great no lags, and 3 seconds 2007 word opening. I highly suggest the ssd solution. it really make it usable, like using it with XP...
How much page file did you set up? Any perceived improvement in battery life?
Very interesting...
Which SSD drive did you use (brand/model) ?
(Toshiba 8mm HDD being definitely too thick for Shift casing... and slow)
FYI. Don't know if you've heard about the new intel SSDs due out in Q3. They will have a 1.8" with 80GB and later 120GB. These, and other larger drives from other manufacturers, will likely devalue current 64GB SSDs by half. Personally, I think I'll wait. I don't have $500 to flush down the toilet right now...

Well... eh.... I do....
What brand and model? and where can I get it? and does it improve battery time?
SSD Reliability ?
I had always thought SSD were SO much more reliable that regular hard drives, but today saw this article:
One-in-four-SSD-based-laptops-fail
Any comments? User experience.
I;m debating whether to void mu Shift warranty by upgrading to SSD and or 2GB DDr sometime near end of this year or so.
But really think I should wait until the next generation Shift, then tinker with my "old" 9501.
Add to wish list for new model:
Auto detect porttait/landscape rotation
Make cell calls (of course)
Unfortunatly, basically all new SSD's that we'll see this yeah on the market will have an SATA interface - especially those with a really good perfomance (as the perfomance improvements comes from the Flash controllers... and nobody will spend big money on that PATA stuff anymore, as it's really an dying technologoy). So, while the currently available SDDs might become cheaper over the time, we won't see that much new (bigger, cheaper, faster) SDDs from now on. Especially not with that funny ZIF connector the SHIFT needs...

Changing the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 processor?

Hi all,
I wonder if there is any possibility to change the prosessor of the X2 for a faster one. If there is somewhere a processor that has the same pin-layout, same size than the one on the x2, then why wouldn't it be possible to unsolder it and swap to an faster one..?
Sorry if this question is stupid, but i have no idea about mobilephone processors... On computers you can swap processors if they fit in the socket, and consume the same amount of power etc..
I'm not so much more a mobilephone processor expert but I doubt it's that easy. In mobilephones those components have to work together I guess. That means some hardware probably needs that qualcomm to work.
Also, I could imagine theres a problem with the heat of faster processor - or is that nonsense?

It's a great question; I also wish it were possible. But mobile phone processors have various complexities such as a separate processor for various functions like phone or graphics. The only possibility would be to go from one Qualcomm to another, but even then, aren't mobile phone processors tiny? The soldering itself might be close to impossible.

If it would just be the case of soldering, then i'll find someone who would do the job for me Afcourse the aspect of heat etc could be an issue..
Any other thoughts from anyone who knows about these kind of processors?
If the CPU itself is pin compatible, the issue is only the soldering. Mostly.

Sounds great! Now is there anyone who knows if there is a processor that would fit in the same pin-layout as the current x2-processor? For example the Qualcomms Snapdragon-processor?
unlikely that its even the same size let alone the same number of pins.. and even if it was of identical size and layout then theres the voltages to consider. i doubt the x2 was constructed by hand. quite often chips are placed and soldered by machine. would require an expert of considerable skill to remove and then solder in a new chip perfectly.
finally theres the problem of finding a processor to put in.... not like you can buy them in pcworld! if you wanted a snapdragon cpu you would have to buy a snapdragon phone to use as a donor. very expensive way to upgrade a phone.
Ur going to kill ur phone mate, u must be ridicusly precise if u decide to do that . .
Not possible! .. this is not a desktop! (or a laptop) with an changeble socket
apart from the soldering out a smd cpu with tons of legs then
if the new faster cpu didn't use 100% the same wm driver it would require a new rom and the the device would not work with any rom but the one custom made for the newer cpu

Is it possible to change/upgrade ram from 3GB?

The phone is still the beast, the only thing it lacks is more RAM. Is it possible to change/upgrade the hardware? Has anyone done that?
I'm new to this phone but I'll say no anyway.
To do that you'd have to disassemble it, remove the RAM chip and replace it with a bigger one. That involves soldering and probably (if you want a high chance of success) surface mount equipment to do it. That equipment would cost you at least ten times the cost of buying a newer phone.
If you managed to do that successfully I've got no idea the rest of the board would recognise the extra RAM or even boot.
Also where would you buy a single surface mount RAM chip?
That's probably your first problem to work out.
I'm guessing you've asked this as you've added RAM to an old PC or laptop in the past, phones are not like that. If they were the phone would be too big and wouldn't sell!
