Replacing Tilt Outer Keypad - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I just got a new keypad that I want to replace the chrome one with. Does anyone know how to replace it? I heard about the four screw method, but am not 100% sure what to do. I don't want to take the entire phone apart just to replace a keypad. What is the easiest and fastest way to do this? If anyone knows, please share because I didn't really find a for sure way through searching. I would like to do this tonight, so let me know soon. Thanks.

use the search dude,
i'm looking to replace mine too and i found out that you can either
1. buy the whole keyboard assembly, disassemble the phone and replace the whole keyboard assembly it
2. buy just the keyboard and replace it, you dont even have to disassemble as discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=458991
guess which way i'm going to use.......

Did you even read my post? I asked how to remove the outer keypad not the inner keyboard. I want to know how to do it without taking apart the entire phone.

my bad
the 4 screws method u refer to i assume is probably from this thread a few days ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=490043. i've attached an image to show which 4 screws to remove.
I did try to pry the front housing off after removing that 4 screws but i was not successful, although i have to admit, i was using an old credit card to do the prying.

Thanks. I have one of those plastic prying tool I used to open my Ipod, so those should work. Is there anything I need to be carful of when taking off the cover, like a ribbon cable? I just don't want to snap on and be without my phone like what happened with my Ipod.

look at the disassembly guides, once you remove that outer housing, you need to disconnect one connector and that's it.
also.....since u're not disassembling the whole device, theres gonna be a ribbon cable that connects to the main board that you cant remove. that's the one u gotta be careful

whoa
where did u guys find the original kaiser button pad?
i wanted to replace mine also, but all i found was an all-chrome ugly one.

Thanks guys. It worked great and was pretty simple to replace. Here is a link to where I found the instructions:

How do I replace Digitiser/Digitizer/Touchscreen overlay?

I have had my phone open a few times...
1) To replace Vario III case with Kaiser case
2) To fix faulty keyboard, had to bend some of the aluminium on the bottom of the keyboard unit.
So I know my way around inside and haven't broken anything... yet!
Anyway, my screen is very scratched so I want a new digitizer, they're significantly cheaper than a whole LCD assembly. I got one for £5, the assembly is over £30.
I did read on some thread that the digitiser WILL perish as I separate it from the LCD screen. Is this true? If so how easy is the clean up job?
Also, the official kaiser service manual shows the LCD and Digitiser held together with tape on the outside and not double sided tape or glue like the actual assembly looks like.
Has anyone done this before? Is there a decent risk of damaging the LCD itself or to be on the save side should I just buy the whole assembly?
I have the digitiser here and ready to go as long as I can get some info from someone who has tried this.
Cheers
Sorry bump.
to be honest there will be soldering involved and u need special equipment for that ribbon
look at http://rapidshare.com/files/103168855/HTC_Kaiser_Service_Manual_jas_pik.pdf
there is detailed procedure and all the tools needed, i believe the tools are basics, and i dont think they will be expensive to have, as matter of fact, i think buying a tool box is an asset.
best luck ...
Hi!
The service manual linked to does not specifically contain information about replacing the digitizer, just how to assembly it.
Do I need a certain kind of black tape to attach it? Is that the only way it is connected to the LCD itself?
Mine is also very scratched, and I would like to replace it, preferably done by myself.
Any tips?
Cheers
a good insulation tape (anti-static prefered) will do the job

AT&T Tilt Dissasembly Instructions?

Hi. I'm going to replace my AT&T Tilt screen because there is a crack in it. I was wondering if you guys could find me an easy to follow guide on how to dissasemble the Tilt. I'm kinda new to this so make sure it's easy to follow. Thanks!

have you serched? i found them realy easy and did the screen angle mod were ace.
How hard is it to do?
I just got a Fuze because the lcd screen on my tilt got jacked up, but if it were not too difficult I wouldn't mind spending 40 dollars on an lcd screen to get another working phone to take out when I go get hammered at bars or go to places where I am more likely to mess it up.
I just did this the other day (all for nothing too)
My tilt screen still displays things just fine, but the touch functionality quit. So i Went out an bought a new LCD and Digitizer for it. And replaced it. I was looking for disassembly instructions and I foudn them, but most of the em show how to take down the entire phone which isn't necesary to just replace the screen. It wasn't all too hard. But it was kinda scary prying stuff apart.
You need to take out thr 4 small torx screws on the back of the screen (the ones along the edges of the screen, not the ones in the hinge mechanism) Then you need to pry off the front cover. They suggest some specialty tool (some use a credit card) I just used a guitar pic. To get the cover off you have to pry around the 4 corners of the screen (thats where it locks in) You can then lift the cover up far enough to swap out the screen w/o having to take it off the entire way. Now, assuming I can't fix my tilt I'll probably have an extra brand new screen being when i put it in, the touch functionality still didn't work so I assume there is something else wrong w/ my phone. Ugggh

Replace Digitizer only?

My touch screen stopped working on my phone, but the screen is still visible. I'm assuming it's the digitizer. I was wondering if anybody has done or tried replacing only the digitizer. Does this work, is it better just to replace both? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Save yourself the headache
Just replace the complete screen unit (lcd + digitizer).
The digitizer is held on the screen with some super strong adhesive that is nearly impossible to get off cleanly. Also, there are three (4?) thin ribbon tabs that have to be soldered to the board on the rear of the lcd. Unless you are really confident with a soldering iron, it is extremely hard to do.
I replaced my screen unit in about a half hour. Make sure you go to the wiki and find one of the excellent disassembly guides before you start.
Thanks
Thanks, that's exactly the information i needed to know. I found the fon logix video. Is it only a t6 tool i need, or do i also need a t5. I have seen conflicting info on this? Thanks again.
I got my scren unit from ebay, and it included a torx driver and a plastic case tool. I honestly can't remember what size came in the kit, because I used my own torx set. Im pretty sure its just the one size, though.
Good luck!
You might find this information interesting.

Disregard ............
i always replace only the touch screen. okay i've done it aprox 30 times. But i never broke one.
if you decide to replace only the touchscreen, there are 2 types. thus check which on you have, and i found out that sometimes reassamble, and cleaning can help.
good luck.
torx is 5 and 6, 6 for opening the back of the phone, 5 for the screen part removal of the body and opening it. you need an opening tool!!
adhesive
is there a terrible adhesive between the screen and digitizer, as the second poster mentioned? how difficult is it to deal with?
just cut away with snapoff knives. It wil break in more pieses. (the glas that is) just be carefull, and take your time
Thanks
Thanks for all of the info, i went ahead and purchased the screen with the digitizer and tools. One thing i have noticed though is the d-pad has stopped working also, i'm using a custom rom so i'm not sure if it's just that or it's something else. i will prob re-image after i replace screen.

Well, guess I was a smarty pants and bought my stuff before consulting XDA...as such, I ONLY bought the touchscreen rather than the entire new unit. Cheaper, yes, but I had no idea about the adhesive until just now. My only question is, once I remove the old screen from the LCD with a razor blade, how do I affix the new one?
Anyone?
i would love to know this too because i have to also replace my digitizer!

I used rtv gasket maker the transparent blue one worked well.
you can find it in automotive section. Actually any silcone will work.
also can use double sided tape but needs to be very thin
I've already changing my digitizer, but it doesn't seem to work. So I've change the whole part. cost me $20 more on ebay.
my advice is to change the whole package with the lcd too.

Replacing front housing / faceplate

I need to replace the front housing / front faceplate on my tilt. I have read the service manual and watched some videos on taking apart the tilt and have read the wiki etc. My question is do I really need to disassemble the whole unit to just replace the front faceplate? It looks like I may just need to remove 4 screws on the rear of the faceplate. So can I remove the faceplate by just removing those screws or do I need to dissasemble the whole phone?
thanks!
taz
oh and I searched tis forum too, but to no avail. I dont want to take apart the whole unit if it isnt necessary.
Yes you can.
Refer to manual attached.
Info is in this forum so search again if you need more info.
freakin awesome. I had searched a ton for something like this and did not find anything, maybe because I was using the terms front housing and faceplate in my searches - I just didn't know what else it would be called. Thank you SO much, this will save me a huge hassle!

Instructions will work - but you have to be pretty carefuly not to damage the rest of the unit and overflex the hinges. Potential for having the top and bottom section gap large than you would like.
Did the ENTIRE housing yesterday - wasn't that bad - just have to keep track of the screws and not forget anything. Have to follow the directions carefully esp when removing the keyboard from the housing - the plastic stick on piece really has to be removed. Followed the official HTC manual from Mike Channon and the only thing I didn't do was completely take apart the SIM to separate the slider. In hindsight should have done that to tighten the hinges a bit so the tilt mechanism is a little more firm. Held my breath when I pressed the power button but it powered up and it worked perfectly all day.
thanks for the tips stim!
I just got done replacing the front cover and everything fit back together ok, one spot on one of the sides has a very slight gap now where the new cover and the rest of the phone don't 100% touch but it is barely noticeable and you would probly only notice it if you were looking for it.
One thing that is missing from those instructions, is that there is one screw that you have to remove after unplugging the 2 ribbon cables, this screw is a B*tch to remove and even harder to put back. It was such a pain to put back that I determined it wasnt necessary and left it out. If you're looking at the front of the phone, this tiny screw is located on the upper right corner.
so I'm hoping that the gap will eventually close more on on that one problem area but I'm not too concerned with it.
thanks again for the instructions Mister B

[URGENTLY] How to replace digitizer on lcd

hi, i have my phone opened, and i dont know how to replace digitizer on my LCD screen which i take from phone
Please Urgently.. Thx. Mike
P.S. Must i open LCD scr.?
I'd advise replacing the whole screen as digitizer is glued to screen, there is guides to how to replace the screen which can be found via search one of them is very easy as just remove the four screws from behind the screen.
Good luck
If your only replacing the digitizer, which isn't easy I have done a few.
You will need to carefully remove old digitizer, I heat up the digitizer where it's glued and remove it, it will come off in pieces (glass).
then clean residue glue off lcd frame.
then glue the new digitzer.
last part is soldering the connector on the digitzer to the connector on the lcd it's not easy, it can be done with solder iron but I use a rework station makes it 100 times easier.
good luck
now it isnt urgently.. on night i closed phone.. but it is strange.. my slide effect is strange.. whn i put phone on table, so UP part (LCD,action buttons) is little moved right than DOWN part.. for ex. i think this slide after closing has opposite direction !BUT ONLY LITTLE (1mm)!
thanks for advice..
and i think this thread can could be good tread for everyone who dont know what to do with LCD. As me
I would also advise to replace the entire screen. They are easily sourced from a well known auction site and most will supply the opening tools and a screen protector.
A simple web search will find the service manual to open your pda. There are tuts for replacing the screen by removing the 4 screws behind the screen and pulling the housing apart to slide the screen out. Bewarned that if you are too forceful you will damage the mic and other parts that are still screwed to the board.
I bought two Xda stellars some time back. Both needed a lil TLC. One a scratched screen the other the housing was badly scuffed. Having repaired a few PDAs, I thought I would ask an independant store to see what they would charge (labour only as i would supply parts). He quoted £20 for each phone, have a look at the service manual see the steps to take it apart and reassemble ask yourself for the sake of £20 is it worth the aggro.
Good luck with your replacement, I hope this helps and any others who encounter similar issues.

Simple answer, No !
ok, on kaiser i can use only kaiser LCD? (no vogue,no tytn 1.....)
Correct, the Kaiser motherboard is ONLY compatible with the type of screen it originally came with.
I heard the t-mobile wing digitizer would work on the tilt.
I have not try it, maybe on next one needs new digitizer.
My son has just broke the screen on his tytn2, reading through there seems to be the screen itself and the digitiser behind, if I order both of these, are they a simple fit, someone referred to soldering, I do not want to go down that route................
Just found how to video on you tube, looks fiddly, but I will give it a go.
