Hi guys....few weeks ago I saw a post about some program that disables data, I can`t seem to find that post anymore I hope someone can help me out on this. I am going to be coming down to San Diego and I don`t want my G1 to do data roaming. Is there anyway I can completely disable data on it?
Thanks.

Just rename your APN.. adding a few letter on the end will keep it from connecting. Its what I do since I am using my Magic on prepaid.

There are several options. Some are free. apnDroid works pretty well. You might be interested in apnDroid + WiSync as a no data WIFI-only synchronization solution. Many prefer this solution for a WIFI-only sync solution. WiSync also doubles as a Locale plugin allowing you to add synchronization settings to situations (auto-sync on/off, gmail on/off, calendar on/off, contacts on/off). WiSync as a Locale plugin provides more features than the Locale Sync plugin.
If you don't mind paying a couple of bucks you can look at WiSyncPlus. It allows you to schedule access to both your APN and WIFI as well as control synchronization. WiSyncPlus has lots of triggers so you can, for example, automatically enable/disable your WIFI when the screen turns on/off. Additionally WiSyncPlus even has some roaming protection features. Of the available applications, WiSyncPlus is by far ahead of the pack in sheer features/capabilities and options. Plus it has tons of shortcuts to make using it easy.
Here's a list of URLs of the above mentioned applications for easy reference.
apnDroid
WiSync
Locale
WiSyncPlus
WiSyncPlus @ GearSoft
APNdroid works great and it's super-easy to use.
If you have a rooted phone you can also check Droid Wall. It allows you to enable your data while not consuming it in the background by any application.

i used toggle data from the market before...
One quick note, WiSyncPlus toggles your APNs much, much faster than either apnDroid or ToggleData. The later of the two can prevent your phone from ringing should you be toggling state as a call comes in. The delay is long enough you can completely miss a call. WiSyncPlus does not suffer from this issue. Granted, its not likely to happen but I have read accounts (apnDroid at least) complaining about the issue. But hey, they're free and WiSyncPlus is not.

Hi there,
I'm looking for a specific app for my rooted 2.1 G1. I'm on a Vodafone pay as you go thing, and internet/data usage is pricy on this. Is there an app which stops ALL data usage/internet/GPS(Does GPS use data usage?)/etc unless connected to WiFi, in which case it'll allow all that?
Thanks in advance
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/net.toeach.android.disconnect/
Oh fantastic! I think that might be perfect
One question though, if the APN is off will I still be able to make/recieve calls and texts?
You can also use droidwall. Its really useful and free on market
APN OnOff is no longer free from what I can tell from the Market, but DroidWall looks ideal.
Thanks!
Hey!
I'm getting crazy here...
I do not have an internet flatrate on my phone, everything is prepaid, i.e. every time I access the internet via mobile data I lose money !
My provider lets me access facebook for free -> I sometimes use it on the go.
Eventhough its free I lose money through "Android OS" downloading stuff...
I'm using Droidwall and only allowed Dolphin to use mobile data. Android OS still has access somehow...
Does anybody know how to stop Android OS from using data? I don't have any syncs on. Even when using the option "restrict background data" i lose money though Android OS. My Data Manager also just tells me "dolphin" and "OS services"...
Hope you can help!

Thanks for trying to help but you cannot imagine how often i do a factory reset. This does NOT fix the problem of Android OS.
Have you enabled - back up my settings, etc. to my google account ?
In most ICS Rom are widget buttons where you can find "Toggle sync". Disable synchronization by this widget doesn't help?

I disabled the sync toggle from the power management widget...
Its driving me crazy! :/
Hmm, if you switched off general synchronization and it doesn't help, maybe try switch off synchronize in every application, e.g, weather, google play etc.
It's a bit strange, but maybe it'll help
Don't know if that would help, since i use Droidwall to block all internet accesses on mobile data exept Dolphin. AndroidOS still has access but i cannot figure out why...
Which processes are AndroidOS? Is there any Spy App that could tell me this?
Hmmm.... use a DroidWall from Google Play, if your phone is rooted.
After install, you can precisely set which app would you like to grant net access, and it is possible to allow access over wifi only.
Another what you can try is PermissionsDenied. Here you can set the net access via each app permission.
Now Im saying it thrice. I am using Droidwall!

I guess it's not much solace, but I'm experiencing the same. I know a bit about Android/Linux/etc., so I took a look at the firewall rules. Theoretically it is possible that some packets are leaking through the rules of DroidWall (or the firewall rules of "avast! Mobile Security" ... but they are mostly the same as DroidWall's rules). Later I'll test this by adding a custom rule that logs everything that gets past DroidWall's rules and see if any traffic shows up that should be caught by DroidWall. I'll report back my results here.
Ok, I got to the bottom of this. In my case I was seeing very small amounts of data usage and it was attributed to the "Android OS" app/component in the "Settings / Data usage / Mobile" screen. As it turned out, the small traffic was caused by regular DNS requests (since I had "avast! Mobile Security" installed which always allows outgoing DNS requests ... regardless of your firewall settings).
I wrote a pretty thorough post on my experiences in my blog: muzso.hu/node/4943
P.S.: I do not have yet 10 posts on xda-developers so I was not allowed to insert a proper link to my blog post (but I guess a copy&paste is not too much to ask for if you're interested in the details)
Would anyone be interested in finding the solutions to the problems below as a "job" and giving me a price for the solutions?
(1 - Data Roaming Nag)
Recently upgraded from HTC desire running 2.2 (I think?) to Razr I which is now running 4.12, before if I'd be abroad I'd simply get a text from my service provider about the rates, I always had data roaming enabled as it's a business phone and only €2 for the first 50mb which is more than enough for a days use. So I set the razr up in much the same way, albeit on 4.12 but I had data roaming enabled and when I first got connected to a foreign network it prompted me about data roaming, which I thought would be just a once off for the first time since I already had it enabled, I clicked yes to acknowledge it anyway and continue using data roaming which was fine, but then it seemed as soon as I dropped out of coverage and came back, the notification would come up again. It actually got so frequent that the notification was on my screen almost every time I unlocked the phone and it got pretty annoying.
Has anyone else experienced this and found out a way to disable the popup? I'm not sure if it's android or motorolla related?
(2 - Enable USB Mass storage)
I've seen mods of this but I don't think they are compatible with 4.12, if anyone has a solution or could edit the settings.apk to enable it and post it that would be great
(3 - Contact Sync Issue)
My contacts are not syncing properly. I've over 2,700 contacts as it's a business phone. I save all to my gmail account under different groups (my contacts/business/sport) and never had sync issues on my old desire but I'm having issues with this. When I check the account in settings, sync is fine for everything (calendar, gmail etc) but contacts and the last successful sync is days and days ago. The error just reads "Sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back again shortly", which obviously isn't the case. I've tried "contact sync fix" app and although it works, I don't like using such a solution and would of course much rather it to just work as it's supposed to. Also I'm getting a "Sync - too many contacts deletions" notification sometimes that I'm not sure what to do with, when I click it it comes up saying "Deletion limit exceeded" and then says there are 8 deleted items for contacts account [email protected]. What do you want to do?" giving me the options: Delete the items - undo the deletes - do nothing for now. I don't know what to do so just choose "do nothing for now" contacts seem to be still intact but I'm very worried about losing any.
(4 - Space between numbers)
I'm not sure if this is a new thing with the newer androids, a dialler issue or what, but the phone is automatically adding gaps between numbers when I try and save. I've a lot of numbers and prefer to keep them all the same formatting, which is, for example, +353871234567, if somebody rings me, sometimes it comes up as +353871234567 which is grand, other times it might come up as 0871234567 so all I used to need to do was delete the 0 and add a +, now when I edit the number, spaces are automatically added and it shows up something like 087 123 4567. This used to only happen with landline numbers and then sometimes if you tried to delete say the space between 3 and 4, it would delete the space AND the 3!
I thought it was an issue with Go Contacts/Dialler EX but it's happening on EX Dialler too even though I've clicked off the area code setting, so I'm thinking it might be an android issue? Anyone managed to sort it out? I may have found something to do with it from Android Development, but I haven't a clue if that can be changed as a mod for a specific phone?

Thanks for letting me know. Do you think there will be a solution, ever?
I think I solved the contact sync issue, I chose the "undelete" option and then I noticed 8 new "my contacts" groups in gmail itself (from desktop) so I deleted them groups from gmail and I think it's ok now. I also sent Go contacts/dialer to system app (because of a missed call issue) so I'm not sure if this contributed, I also deleted the "contact sync fix" app. Hopefully the issue doesn't resurface.

Does anyone know of a widget I can use to switch roaming mode between "automatic" and "force roaming?" I'm running Viper 1.1 with nova launcher. I tried to dig out the settings shortcut but they dont have the option to select "mobile data." I also tried to use a nova launcher "activity" but I couldn't find that shortcut either- I dont think mobile data is a usable activity. I have beautiful widgets installed but you cannot set up a switch for that.
I'm thinking it would need to be a specific app cause none of the other routes I've tried has yeilded a workable solution (currently I have a settings shorcut and I navigate to mobile data, select roaming and then force it... booo)
...My apartment is perfectly placed that its too weak for receiving calls on sprint signal but not quite weak enough to reliably switch to roaming (full bars roaming and able to receive calls) Its really annoying and I've missed a ton of calls because of this. (I did talk to sprint about an airave and they want to charge $10 a month for access...ONTOP of buying the damn thing... to augment their ****ty signal? Get real.)

Roam Control does a great job, although I'm guessing you don't really want to buy an app that essentially duplicates your ROM's functionality.

I actually had looked into that app but it didn't seem to fit what I was looking for... I'll check it out again
I just downlaoded "secure settings" and in that app I enabled "helper" (root required). Then you can press and hold on the mainscreen to make a "shortcut" and select secure settings, then you can select "data roaming" in the helper menu which is now enabled. Then you'll have to download an Icon pack (free) which the app directs you too (there are tons to match just about any theme). You can name the widget, pick the icon, save and...

Roam Control comes with a pretty simple 4x1 widget that lets you toggle between Home, Automatic, and Roaming. That's the end of that as far as Roam Control's widgets go. You can also create a Tasker task to toggle Roam Control and use Tasker's widgets if you want.
Secure Settings is great, but Data Roaming is not at all what you want. Data Roaming simply allows you to use mobile data (3G/4G) when you're already on a roaming provider.
Tasker and Roam Control together come close to $10 (at least, they did when I picked them up-- I think that Tasker now is actually $3.49), but I now have a profile that checks every half hour for the phone's service state. If the signal received is below a certain threshold (10% of optimum), the phone switches to roam, so long as a call is not active. If you get Roam Control and it works for you (can't see why it wouldn't, it does for me), I can package my profile as a separate APK and send it to you for use.

Unfortunately so, after Google pulled Roam Control from the market. And Tasker has a learning curve, but it's incredibly rewarding once you learn to use it-- and it's much less complicated than many people make it sound. If you choose to use Roam Control, let me know and I can package up my roam check routine (it'll work without Tasker).

GrooVeIP is an excellent program, but holding an open Wi-Fi connection can be a hit to your battery life, and no matter what codec I used the other party always felt I sounded a bit hazy. But it certainly is a good option if you're in a signal-less area for long periods of time (especially in teh basement of buildings).
So I just discovered the magical world of tasker, and am loving it! Totally worth the money, and one of the best apps to have (the best if you know how to maximise its use)! I have been experimenting a bit with it, so I don't have many profiles. I'm sure many folks here will be using tasker and would be having some great profiles, so I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions! The profiles I use are:
1. WiFi off at night, from 00:45 to 08:00, except WhatsApp, Play Store, Quora
2. Airplane mode at night, from 00:30 to 07:00
3. Use of interactive CPU governor when using Real Racing 3, and revert to lionfish governor after exiting app(Kernel adiutor profiles do this for me). I also added a condition to use auto-rotate when playing the game, and revert to portrait orientation after closing the app.
4. Auto-sync every two hours, from 08:00 to 20:00 (I would like to improve this to auto-sync only Gmail, would welcome suggestions on how to do this from any tasker experts out here )
I would love to implement more profiles and automate my phone, so looking for ideas.

I don't know if you can disable mobile data entirely (not just background which Android can do already) for just certain apps.
Perhaps it would be easier to use something like Netguard.
I've never used it but the description says "Applications can individually be allowed or denied access to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection."

I was actually going to suggest that as I have it installed already but when I tried it didn't work.
The "Mobile data" toggle was unavailable because it claims I don't have root. However, I'm definitely rooted and there's no listing (saying denied or otherwise) in SuperSU for Secure Settings so it didn't even ask for root. I'm not too surprised as SS hasn't been updated in over a year and a lot of the Play Store comments mention mobile data toggle specifically not working either (among other things). Too bad as it was pretty powerful and of course I think I paid for it right after its last update.
Not getting SS working for me might just be my problem and perhaps someone else can get it going.
I was also going to suggest [APP][2.2+][ROOT] Toggle Data 5.0 (xda-exclusive free version) but then I read more about what @anks095 said which was "can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps" so I'm guessing he just wants certain apps restricted and not all (although the next sentence seems to say otherwise but I might be reading it incorrectly). I'm not too sure that can be done via Tasker/SS - my guess is that it's an "all-or-nothing" kinda thing for mobile data so the VPN thing might be the only way.
I use a similiar app called automagic but some of the things that I got my tasker like program to do are: lockscreen enable/disable through wi-fi at trusted places (don't like geofencing due to battery), when connected to the bluetooth of my car. Auto silent 5 min before a meeting, but if not connected to my smartwatch then vibrate. And lastly sms emergency location request where my family can send a keyword and my phone will automatically send location.

How is the lockscreen one working for you? I find the built-in SmartLock to be really unreliable but when I tried to do lockscreen stuff before (last year) there was some bug in either Tasker or Secure Settings that would sometimes keep your screen black with just the nav buttons visible present. I'll have to re-try now.
That sms emergency request thing sounds cool! Can the recipient open the location in Maps to see exactly where you are?
Without issues I set it so that it clears the password. Makes it so that I have to swipe to unlock. As for the location, yes it sends coordinates and the user in the other end taps it to bring up Google maps.

Thank you very much - clearing the password was the key! I had been trying before to disable the keyguard entirely so I wouldn't even have to swipe but that's where the problem/bug came in. Thinking about it that makes more sense to have at least a swipe because I'd end up calling people from my pocket by mistake. So thanks again!
Tasker...hmmm. Bought it, but much to complicated for me. Macrodroid is much easier to understand and can also do complicated automation with a normal user friendly interface. I tried to like Tasker, but the more and more I tried the more stupid I felt.
