Fist of all I am not a employee or promoter of this app. I just really like it. "Where" combines multiple programs all into one. It has yellow pages, weather, gas prices, movies, news headlines, starbucks locator. I have had all of these programs installed at the same time and they all caused me problems with gps not updating to my correct location. "Where" has them all built in and I never have problems updating my gps. Who has tried this program and what are you reviews of it
I also really enjoy using this app. Some days just for weather updates, others for finding phone numbers and locations of businesses. It really is a nice combination of several apps in one. Useful and have not had any real problems with it.

I downloaded the AndNav 0.6 app a couple weeks before I got my phone and I was very excited to have a decent application for GPS navigation. I loved having TomTom on my Windows Mobile phone w/ internal GPS.
But the author of AndNav is stalled in his development because his app violates the TOS for the GPS mapping so no navigation for Android that isn't lousy Google Maps which is a joke if you're trying to use it for "real" navigation.
Is there any way to get AndNav's APK loaded on the G1? It seems as though there is no way to install it from the web or locally. That seems to be the problem with most of the non-Market apps. I hope that this is a temporary issue where developers need to recompile their apps for the version of Android released with the phone. It would really suck that "open" Android with its tickbox for "install from other sources" is just a red herring.
Or alternatively is there a commercial GPS navigation app like TomTom, iGo, Garmin, whatever, being developed that stores the maps locally?
The TOS violation is for Google maps not the hardware. So if an alternative map source can be found then it's good to go. Besides, since Google maps is web based if you went out of a coverage area, or lost service, the navigation would die off too.
Even if you get the APK loaded the maps api checks for a key before releasing data, so it wouldn't work.
Android itself is open, Google maps is not... at least not entirely.
What I don't get is why they object, are there any lawyers out there that can explain that one to me? Perhaps it has something to do with the web based issue.
From what I understand google is only having a problem because they. Use multiple sources for map data and can't sublicense them for navigation. Navteq and Teleatlis don't want to undercut their relationships with TomTom, Garmin, etc.
It's a pity since AndNav looks like it's 70% done.

*Hint* Get the dev to release the source for andnav, you can put in your own hash from google. And you can do it again and again... They really don't check up on individuals.
It's certainly worth a try to get him to release the source but I doubt he would do it. He could get in trouble from the map license holders and he's working on getting OpenStreetMap data to integrate to presumable make a product he can sell that is free of license issues.
On a side note, how useful IS OSM anyhow? So you get a bunch of GPS logs made by a bunch of people and it constitutes some street information. Who arranges the data? How useful could extremely incomplete street data be? How do the street names and numbers get entered so you actually know if you're on the interstate or an alley? The website (last time I checked) was lacking in information. I know they have a serious purpose but it seems laughable that they could possibly put something useful together.
I hadn't heard of OSM before you mentioned it, but after taking a look, it looks pretty complete. There's no "street view" or "sattelite imagery" but that stuff would be superfluous and distracting in a navigation system. The fact that it is user updateable is awsome. If AndNav can be configured to pass data back to OSM for detailing the maps then it stands the potential to be even more accurate.
I looked again and it SEEMS pretty complete but apparently they are using TIGER data for the US and it is... lacking.
Stirling Road, a large street in my area has huge gaps in it. It has existed for at least 60 years in the same spot and it's pretty inconsistent on the map.
Another concern is that apps that use tiger data (roadnav for Linux comes to mind) can't tell if a street is one-way or not.
why are there so many themes in the market application? should make a seperate to Theme market. too many themes in there. its annoying
I agree its getting old. It seems like every time I go into the market I have to sift through 15 themes to find anything good.
I agree. There has got to be a better way to handle distribution of these themes.
what's worse is that a lot of them are made by the same people. RSD keeps making themes for the phone and then selling them for a dollar. i'm sorry but i don't think you should charge for a theme, no matter how much work you did. i make themes too but i'm not gonna tell people that they have to give me money in order to try it. most themers do the stuff cause it's fun not cause they wanna get rich
It's easy money. Make a theme, upload it, charge 99c and make some money... now everyone is on it. Tis a shame they isnt more categories on Market, so many of them are misplaced. I wonder if Google plan on doing anything about it? You can literally spend 10-15mins scrolling down until you reach the bottom.
+1 I have to sift through so many themes they are annoying!
Then there are the comic books, the other day there had to be like 20 of them submitted at once.
In some ways the 'openness'* is part of the problem. I've not investigated how you put a program etc on market place and what the uploader has to do, to charge but it seems like people can charge what they want. I saw one earlier which seemed to be pictures of cars (and another for bikes) and he wanted $4.99.
I wish it was a little more regulated... I never thought I'd say that!! or atleast no facility to charge for apps.
Or even if Google could add new categories...

There is actually nothing open about the market. For example, if the market had an api, I could write an alternative market client with a capability to filter out all these annoying themes/videos/comics. The point is that the market, like GMail and all the other closed applications on the G1's Android build, is a closed value-added product.
Unfortunately since Market client is closed-source, we can only hope Google gets the message and builds in some sort of filtering in a future version. They did pretty promptly address the comment spam issue, which shows some promise.
I too am sick of the themes and everything else associated with the alternate home screens. Hopefully as the market matures they will address the issue.
Now that it is warmning up and my fiance and I can go back to do walks I would like to get a app that show how far we walked. Latter how far we jogged. I know I need a GPS program. What one is good for this? Since we do not always walk on paths by streets it is hard to do using google maps.
Thanks
Endomondo, or Cardio Trainer. Cardio trainer seems to be working great for me. Accurate and has some motivating features

There's also Runkeeper, I like that one.
I've tried many of these programs for my mountain bike rides. The best I've found so far is AllSport GPS. It supports many kinds of activities and allows sharing via Facebook, Twitter and Trimble.com (the app producer). You can see street and satellite views on the device and on the website. It also tracks way better than Google Maps.
I vote for Cardiotrainer. It has a lot of features like the other guy said. Plus one I like is you can save your walks etc. on their server which means you will always have your tracks even when changing roms.
CardioTrainer fan here too. What I find sets it apart is that you can adjust the GPS quality threshold, meaning that you can force it only to use strong GPS readings and ignore weak ones. I've gotten my best most accurate tracking from this app plus the Phoenix ROM.
I also appreciate that they allow you to manually enter workouts. Sometimes I do treadmill work and I can just enter it in easily.
YMMV
Use CardioTrainer here too. It seems like they always come out with new features and add ons to help engage the idea of fitness. It hooks up with your google health account (yes really) and saves all your stats there. You can track/time run/walks and classify them accordingly. You can track other work out types as well.
My favorite feature is the calorie burn tracker you can turn on in your notification bar. I just wish I could get mine over 500/week regularly
Cardio Trainer also has a setting somewhere where I get a reminder to run or whatever..so much harder to ignore and say..nah not today
I have found some really amazing apps for android and thought i should share if anyone else might need or want them.
8pen: The keyboard has been reinvented for mobile devices. Was intended for phones but works great on my tablet. going to be using this as my main keyboard.
freenote: I was looking for a note taking program that can be used for classes. college level physics mostly. so i needed something i can write/type words on as well as put in a far bit of diagrams or equations. This one was the only one i found that did it all at a bang up job to. the controls may be a bit confusing but can have multiple groups of notes per class. save it and back it up (to restore a backup i only know of copying the back up folder into the main folder).
Win-Remote and URemoteDesktop: both of these are great computer control programs. win-remote only works with windows, URemoteDesktop works with both windows and linux. can make win-remote hidden in the taskbar and start with computer to have some fun with someone. (i have played joke on my bro and everyone was laughing was great). URemoteDesktop shows up in the terminal as a java process so its even more hidden. batch file and shell can run without constantly being on screen.
Font Changer (Root): is a nice simple font changer program. there are others i personally found this to work the best and be easiest to use. can be used with any launcher, also changes fonts in web browser, many apps... basically everything unless the app says otherwise.
AccuWeather: i have found this to be the most amazing weather app. has nice clean non clutter widgets that link to the app as well as show information. the app it self is basically a whole weather channel in your hands. even shows radar and 15day forecast. also very nice eye candy. it also tells you more about the day then just sun or rain. there is a lifestyle forecast section that tells you risk of asthma, cold, flu, mosquito risks, migraine risk and much more, even a dog walking forecast. lol
that's what i found. if there's an app that makes you go WOW please share cause i would love to know of more.
FreeNote looks like exactly what I've been looking for for taking notes in my engineering classes. Tried a few last semester and they just didn't work out very well. I tried replicating a few things and looks like it works very well and is easy to switch between modes (typing, hand writing, drawing).
I searched for about an hour tonight and finally found my perfect math handwriting note taking app = handrite!

Hey guys I'm a newbie, and I'm trying to find how you guys DLed these apps (I need freenote or handrite myself for classes) the only links I've found, when i try to download them i get stopped with this message
"There are no Android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account."
How are you downloading on the G tablet and get it to recognize the thing?
if any of you know which direction to point me in even that would be a huge help!
try the amazon appstore and 1mobile or put a rom on it that gives u the market

Sounds like you're facing a bug. On your gtablet you can download the apps from the market. If you're having trouble, remove your gmail account, reboot, and readd your gmail account to your tablet. This should fix things!
FreeNote FTW!
Wow... I just wish I had FreeNote when I was taking classes. Thanks for posting this OP!
Nice apps. FreeNote is very nice. The kool apps keeps coming and coming...Thanks.
So uh, I saw the google now widget and decided to give it a try. Looks like it could have some useful info whenever you need it. Thing is, the widget only shows the weather, even on max size? It doesn't show anything else, like traffic, news, stocks etc. like in the widget preview.
Anyone else have this problem?
Its shows whatever cards you have in Google now. If you only have weather, it will only show weather.
The more you use it... and allow it to see... the more useful it becomes. It's learned by my locations where work and home is and always gives a card of what traffic is like and what my ETA is. It knows the sports teams I like and pops up info about them. It grows in usefulness over time. It can take a few weeks.
Tinfoil hat-wearing paranoids need not apply. It will collect and aggregate info about you.
I'm not impressed thus far, some options aren't functional yet where I live (Europe), I guess it needs further development. I'll try it again in a few months.

Same here in Germany, it just barely works, weather and traffic that is. Everything else is basically non-existant.
It hasn't really progressed for us europeans since it was released, so i'm not getting my hopes up for future improvements.
Europe is, as usual, neglected when it comes to things like these.
I played with it briefly on a custom 4.2.1 rom, surprised that it still functioned. For me, it's a matter of privacy and how much I WANTED to share & let "them" know as they are already using whatever data/access/bits being generated, with this AI "sniffing" my moves based on the device while it's "connected" - so that everyone from that discrete building somewhere in the Far East to our own N S A or C I A can easily monitor and track at will with minimal to no efforts at all - in the name of homeland sec*#*#* by surrendering access to this cute 7" blackbox.
Think about all the personal & sensitive info that we stored on it, and if not really - think again. That's the price for innovation & liberty, I suppose ...
Now, if it's going to alert me to the danger of Noro-virus the next time I leave a pubic restroom and forgot to do a proper handwash, and beep me about enhanced contact precaution - I would say, job well done on making lives better for us. Until then, I remain guarded on whether I wanted to breach it - so, I re-opted "maybe, later"
i am one of the people who dodnt really care if google knows where my home/work locations, etc are. So, I let google now learn everything it can about me. Some things i find cool are...
if I search in google (desktop or mobile) for say, train schedules, or railroad news, next time I am near the train station or headed to it, it will show me topic related to the railroad and/or the schedule.
It has learned where I practice archery and my friends houses too. I visit both of these places on a pretty set schedule. Whenever it thinks I am about to leave, it shows me the traffic. It's been pretty spot on lately.
If I read a news story on desktop google news, google now will show related stories.
If I search for a store or business on desktop google maps, google now will tell me the traffic from my current location and has a nice handy "navigate" button there ready for me
I am sure a bunch of you know these things already, but just wanted to say that I am actually digging google now for reasons like the ones above....
