I have tons of apps, but none should be running in background except a few,
Right now Bar control and Sim checker should be only ones running in background. But yet the phone is acting so slow, So I wonder if there's more apps running in background I cant see or something that slowing down the phone
So can someone post the name of any app that can see EVERY SINGLE thing running in background but easily enough someone noob as me at this phone can understand, I had one but was all codes and I could not make heads or tails, I just want to know whats running thats making it act so damn slow
second, does sim checker or bar control take up lot of cpu or memory? or anything? if they do, or does anyone know any other apps that take up a lot of resources from the system so I know to get rid of them or prevent me downloading them in the future
If you install Terminal Emulator you can run the linux command top to get a realtime list of running processes and their cpu usage.
Hi, I'm the dev of SIM Checker. Actually it just checks at boot if the sim card is the correct one, and if so it stops itself. So it's not using any cpu and the garbage collector will kill it when there's need of memory - if you want you can manually kill it.

i just uninstalled
wertago phonebook and quickoffice.
they all ran in the background right from the startup which is gay. i would have kept them if they wouldn't restart them self after a reboot or after i close them trhough task manager

Also ya the advance task manager I have I close everything before I do anything else and the services have no apps running I downloaded so why is it so slow? is there something besides a service that can run in background from an app? even with that "top" command in terminal everything besides like 2 system things are 0% cpu..but does not show memory usage

A lot of times I will get random programs that I never use listed as open in the task manager. Mp3 store, nba league pass, documents to go, they all keep opening up again even though I never use them. Is there a reason for this? There are other apps that do this too, I just listed the ones I see most often.
Yes, this is normal. Android loads applications until the RAM is almost full, so they're ready to pop up in an instant when you actually launch them. If an application requires more RAM to work with than available, the system will shut down some of the inactive applications.
There are those task auto-killer programs out there that people use because they think it makes their phone run faster or tidied up, but in fact, most of the time they will slow it down because applications will take longer to start. And consume more power, because there's more work to do when starting an app. A properly written application won't consume any power when inactive, and the RAM has to be powered anyway, so that's why you want it to be used as much as possible.

Is there anyway to exclude certain apps from opening up? There are apps on the phone like mp3 store or the stock messaging app that I would never use, so it would be more worthwhile to get the system to keep apps I actually use open instead of just random ones.

could be a noob question
every once in a while i will go into my advance task killer and see a bunch of apps running that i didnt manually open. i just checked my phone to see sprint nav, mp3 store, droid locator, internet, ringdroid, etc.. it also takes my phone from 71m free to about 35-40m. ill kill the apps, and they will be open again without me touching the phone. am i stupid, or is there actually a problem?
Okay bc those stock apps are coded to run at startup, and open themselfs for ease-of-access, this is normal. If you want to stop that, add them to autokill, and use a startup manager (market) to remove them from the start up screen.
For the mem issues, try disabling the GPS lovation services, that eats up battery life AND mem, same with internet.
If you really want your phone to fly, don't use a task killer.

In theory this is true but in reality it couldn't be more misleading. Yes a task killer, especially one that is always running and using up resources itself is probably less than optimal in an Android environment, however they are sometimes necessary because things do not always work as they are supposed to. If you have root it is better to just use AutoKiller as it doesn't just kill programs but helps the OS by allowing you to set the limits for when the OS should start closing things. It also allows you to manually kill anything not working right.
Of course this is just my opinion, but I have tried it both ways on 3 different Android phones and my results were the same on all.

It's really more of an explanation that "Having free RAM will make my phone faster" will not make your phone faster.
Can't see why this is the case (but it obviously is) as long as I have lots of free disk space and not many apps running at the same time. Any logic in this?

There seems to be several things causing this, but the two key issues are:
The moviNAND (the internal flash drive/"SSD") firmware seems to have an issue with fsync() taking extremely long. E.g., it slows down whenever a file is written/updated on the internal storage.
RFS, the file system used by Samsung is buggy as hell and corrupts data after a while.
There are several topics on these issues in the Android Development forum. There are also several "lag fixes" trying their best to overcome these issues. Go check them out

We have no idea if that is ACTUALLY true.. Just because fsck picked some things up on 1 phone, doesn't mean it happens everywhere.. Furthermore, it doesn't mean the problems detected affect operations
that has no truth at all about more apps slowing down the phone, my phone is the prove
Before jpk i didn't noticed slowdowns with aprox 100 apps, now i do on jpk =/

and that is what most people does not realize
they need to Optimize the phone, most people take it for granted
the phone is not a phone, the phone is a mini computer that fits in your hands
just like your big desktop PC it can go crazy if you don't take care of it

Can you tell me why with the same apps installed on the Nexus it doesn't lag like the SGS?
Can you stop blaming users when is the phone which doesn't work as expected?

just install autorunkiller and a good task manager then all the problems will be gone

With autokiller the phone is still laggy.
And please, stop thinking I'm stupid or I don't know a **** about smartphones, ROM's changing, firmware or knowing how a phone must run.

I have about 190 Apps installed and do not experience any diferene in overall speed of the phone. But only because i know that a lot of the programms start on boot and stay in background.
I have more than 15 apps turned off with the full version of autorun killer to prevent the auto restart of the apps. Otherwise the phone would definetaly slow down.
It´s really incredible what apps start on the boot!

Do you need to be rooted ti use all of the functions in autorun killer? I am not rooted.
Can you compile a breif list of the "biggest culprits" to stop with this utility to gain back the most speed and efficiency? I am a bit nervous that I will stop the wrong items and somehow damage my phone...
Autokiller and task killers are not the solution here! Quick lesson on Android, and why having even A SINGLE BAD APP is going to ruin your whole phone!
Android has something called an 'Intent'. In order to start an app, an intent is made by your launcher or a button you press, and the Android system reads this intent and works out what app it needs to start up.
There is a second type of intent though, called a 'Broadcast Intent'. This is an intent that is sent out to anything that is registered to listen to it. This means that an app can register to listen to all sorts of events, such as battery level changed, application start, or a tons of other things. Even if the application is closed, if it is registered as a listener, Android will start it right back up so it can deal with the intent. If the intent comes every 5 seconds, Android will run this app every 5 seconds even if you have a taskkiller killing the app.
The only real solution is to not install apps which are bad! Finding bad apps is a real mission, too. Hopefully in the future, utilities will be available to let us track down these terrible apps, but till then, you'll have to work it out yourself.

No need for Root to use all features of Autorun Killer. I would disable only the apps you know and which you do not need at startup and running in background, such as (in my case) Paypal, App Center from Androidpit, Daily Briefing, Photoshop Express, Word Press, TweetCaster, etc.
Every of these apps works normal, even when deactivatet on startup.
So unless you do not disable system apps (must be previously set enabled in settings) you are safe.

There is an app called Autostarts at 0.95$.
It shows what is launched au startup, when you enable/disable wifi etc.
It think it gives insight on how apps seems launching out of nowhere.
I also reccomend Watchdog Task Manager Lite, the free version.
It does not kill anything, but notifies and logs the bad apps that consumes over a certain CPU percentage.

I would like to figure out how to keep an application always running in the background, regardless of the memory situation on the device. The application I never want to close in the background is the Terminal Emulator (the Linux command prompt).
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to keep an application from closing in the background? Thank you!

Just dont close the app with the backbutton. Just leave the app as it is. It will always be running in the background. By holding the 'home-button' you can quicly acces the terminal again. The taskmanager will pop-up
Unfortunately not closing the app only works in the short term, meaning that once memory usage gets high enough Android will start closing background tasks on its on. This is what I would like to avoid.
For background information, I do have root on by Tab.

What do you want to keep running? Give a hint please
The application I would like to keep running in the background at all times is the Terminal Emulator (the paid version which is called Better Terminal Emulator).
Any thoughts are welcome.
UPDATE
This has been addressed in the latest version of Better Terminal Emulator... this app now runs as a service, and does not quit unless you specifically ask it to quit, making the Tab most like a true linux box. This is wonderful news!
Not to take over this thread, but how do you STOP from some applications from running in the background.
I always have ebook and google maps running in the background and cant stop them from running in the background.

Push and hold the home button, then choose task manager, then on the running applications tab, tap exit all.
There are apps in the market, called task killers, that close a program when you exit it. The upside is free memory, the downside is it eats some battery time (i don't know why).

Hi guys, did someone find a solution for this? I have a linux loopfile running on my device, but I can't keep my session (on linux) open because android closes terminal emulator each time I open vnc for acces my linux.
Please if anyone find a solution mp me.

If you install Xposed installer (you must root your phone)
then in xposed go to download and search for app settings and install it go to modules and enable it then reboot once booted go to the app settings app
and search for the app and turn the setting switch on and enable (Stay resident in memory) and force show in recants max notification priority and force ongoing notifications
Add this to your build.prop sys.keep_app_1=(app package name here)
I'm running CM7 and I'm happy with how it performs compared to stock rom. I see improvement in battery and memory usage. So that's good.
However, some apps like facebook, maps, tango etc still appear to become active in the background.
Is there an application which will easily let me manage rights for every app I have on the device? I dont want to freeze them, just change their permissions so they never do anything unless I intentionally start an app.
When I was on stock ROM i tried an app killer with auto kill. So i'd kill apps that were displayed. Check back a few minutes later and everything was back running again..
So to sum up..a good app manager that works nicely with CM7?
Edit: i found something called privacy blocker but I think that wont let me prevent apps from running by themselves....

Just ignore them, Android knows how to manage it's RAM effectively.
If you won´t use some apps, use TitaniumBackup (from Market) and freeze apps you are never using.
