After having a Touch a few months back, i thought the Diamond would be a breeze. NO such luck in my experience.
For example. On the main home screen. How do you edit that so it's just the clock or, to add more to the list that currently shows calendar and call history? I can't find any way to do this so if you can enlighten me, i'd really appreciate it.
What about when texting? Is there any way to make the keypad a different size? Personally i can't find a way to edit that. It's annoying that after adding your contacts name, you seemingly have 90% of the screen filled with the entry system and you have to mess about to get to the message section of the screen. Guessing i've missed something somewhere!
Zooming in on a photo... how is that done? Orange's CD ROM User Manual is vague to say the least so if you can assist here to, please do.
This thread could become a handy hints and tips chart for beginners if all feedback is good so if you have a question or some simple advice for settings and the way to go around things, chuck a note in and someone will be very happy to see the reply
1) Well if u flick ur finger in an upward motion on the home screen u'll notice the clock becoming smaller and will list all the list all ur appointments from ur calendar...
2) If u are not satisfied in the HTC Keyboard, u will need to look into other keyboards my fav personally is Touchpal from Cootek and there is even resco keyboard which is pretty gud.
3) You can only zoom in a picture when u r in the HTC Album, in order to zoom you will need to rotate your finger clockwise or anti-clockwise i am always forget which is for zooming so u will need chk tht out...
I hope these tips helps u out....

Hmmmmmm, i see. Shame that somehow we can't take the good things from the Touch like the Home screen as standard and have them in the 3D instead. If any cab compilers are reading this, maybe it's something that could be done?
Along those lines, maybe someone could rip out the original texting keyboard, the smaller more compact one... better for stylus use and enables you to see more screen. I HATE the big finger pad they've put on the Diamond. Is is really necessary to have it that big? Surely if you're going to use the stylus (i mean if HTC didn't want us to use one, then ALL the functions and menus would be larger, yes?), then why provide us with one in the first place?!?!!

There are multiple SIPs already built into the Diamond. Holding your finger or stylus on the small arrow next to the keypad button when input is allowed will display the menu, from there you can select the Windows SIP which is tiny and stylus friendly...
Reading the manual is a good idea before posting dude. Or even a search

Well thanks for that reply. I'll have a mess about with that one.
That took no time at all. NO WINDOWS SIP on my handset. All i have are the following... BLOCK, COMPACT, FULL, KEYBOARD, LETTER, PHONEPAD and TRANSCRIBER *sigh*
What bloody version have you got?!?!!
Oh and for the record Mr Read-The-Text-Provided (lol)... did i not say this? ---> Orange's CD ROM User Manual is vague to say the least so if you can assist here to, please do.
Hmmmmm, i think i did!
Ok... answer this one then. Every other HTC phone i have had has done this but not on the Diamond. When you receive a simple thing like an mms or a text, the screen lights to give a clue in case you never heard the message laert. How you you activate THAT cus i'm not seeing how it'ds done anywhere.
Clues please?
I agree - the 'manual/instructions' Orange sent were non-existent and as a first time PPC user I was totally lost until I had a nosey around here and to be fair am still learning all what this phone can do!

HTC want a good kicking if you ask me. The thing as I see it is this. If they'd have kept the basics as it was on the Kaiser (Tytn II) and THEN added the 3D, all would have been superb.

Hi there!
Today I had a little fun with my Diamond using the camera to produce some kind of false color realtime background picture (or better background video?) in fullscreen (full 480x640 !).
This is what it looks like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tiEji2sTyA
Well, it's a little bit battery consuming and somehow disturbing to look at, so it's not really usable, but it's a funny thing, isn't it?
cheers
Well... It's incredible!! Are you sure it isn't a fake!!???
How do you managed it ? How do you configure manile to be trasparent with camera underneath?
So curious!!
How did you do that ?????
How can your top & bottom bar be transparant ???
It's really fun !!!... I want to be able to do that too ^_^.
Wooow.
Please share your knowledge with us!
Greetings to all.
Yup share plz.How you did that nice trick?
SUPER
Expleine how pls !
Little useful and limited battery time
i want to know how you got the top and bottom bars transparent.
can this be made into a program that you can just run on demand rather than just being on at all times? so we can run it to play around with it then turn it off when your done?
Its a fake. He dont want or he cant tell us how it works.
He just want that we beg to him " Oooo please show us how it works, youre the best etc."
I think he just need attention and nothing more.
Poor guy.
FAKE
look at 16-18sec. when he moves the D closer but the image of the computermag onscreen does not get any smaller
also the angle is not right given the fact that the d camera records 90 dregrees to the screen
I dont unterstand why people doing this. He has no friends or why?
Great!!! You're the best. Pleeeeeeease... show us how it works!!!
You know it's actually logically quite simple to make such a program using video overlay as was used on older Windows operating systems before the DWM came to light.
What the deveolper has probably done is made a theme for the diamond that has alot of a single colour, most likely magenta, as this is not used often in WM6.1 (to my knowledge). All one has to do then, is render video onto any area of the screen which is pink. Using this technique, you could most likely render pre-recorded video onto the screen. If a program is created to sit ontop of all other windows, and remain ontop, and simply pass through stylus entry underneath it, then this is actually a relatively simple things to do...
This method explains how the bars appear transparent, but other visual elements do not. It also explaint why you can see aliasing around fonts and visual elements, as well as no transparensy on the Manila slidey bar thingy.
Or he used the colour as a traditional green screen, and added the video on his computer later.

It appears the video is real time.
As for the part at 16-18 seconds, well that effect is caused by just moving the camcorder closer to the phone and at a slightly different angle. It can be seen happening throughout the video.
No one in their right mind would choreograph the exact steps and angles to match the video this exactly. It would take many hours I assure you. Therefore the video must be real time.
However, the elements displayed in the foreground could be faked. Lucky me, I have a 61" monitor/hdtv that I can see some elements rather clearly. One of those elements is the time displayed on the phone.
At 20s into the video the clock turns
14:02
at 1m17s its
14:03
Do the math. Where did the 3 seconds go?
Perhaps he just edited out 3 seconds where it displayed his name or something similar. The world may never know..
If it's all indeed a fake, then why would someone do this? Advertising the newspaper on the table maybe? Or just for kicks... If it's just for kicks then likely it would be someone here, and likely someone drawing attention to it at roughly around the same time this thread was started.
My theory is that it's real, it's from someone here, and they want to get people talking about it. Eventually, someone will say, "Hey I figured it out"...and that will be them.
I was wondering if it was possible for anyone to make a dialer to replace the existing one that looks like the Dial Home Device seen on the television show Stargate SG-1. I noticed that there is an iPhone app and was hoping that maybe someone could make one, since I haven't the clue as to how they are made. Any responses are appreciated. Thanks.
Can you get a picture? It may just be a matter of skinning the default dialer.
Obviously the number of symbols is > 0-9 on a regular number pad. I could be cool, but I don't know if it is possible software wise. If someone knows it's physically possible, PM me and I could contribute some art. I would just need the specs because I've only made icons for the g1.
Here are the pictures
This is the one from the iPhone. The first one is when you're dialing. The second one is when you press send to connect the call and is active. The stargate in the backround has the wormhole active. I don't expect the background to do that like it does on the iPhone, but if it was somehow possible, that would be awesome. Hope this helps. Thanks once again.

This sounds like a great idea..
Looks nice, but seems a little crowded to place all the numbers side by side like that, but maybe it will work.
I only mention it because I sometimes mis-dial with the current keypad, which only has 3 numbers across.

I haven't had that problem with the dialer. I have with text messaging. But i don't think the numbers will be smaller than the letters on the soft keyboard. I would be fine with that. I just want something different from what most have. And I love stargate and when I saw that I just had to have it, but I don't have a clue how to do it, so that's why I ask for help
So...
Does anyone even know if something like this would be close to possible?
Yeah something like this is possible, I bet it would take a while to render the wormhole unless it used the openGL api. You just have to find a dev willing to put in the time for it. Maybe you can ask a dev in the marketplace that already does custom stuff with the dialer (ben or dan, MGeek, ZacCom)

Thanks everyone I appreciate all the help. I will see where I can go from here.
Tools needed?
Ive been looking at this idea too.
Basically, as having the phone make chevron dialing noises is mostly for the novelty of watching people around you giving you weird looks, im going to see if some of the 'simpler' programming tools programs for WM/Android (as a friend has a Dream) to chuck togheter a "select person, then just make dialing sounds" (simple-er) or a "select person, then highlight in an order a bunch of chevrons to hit based on a person name -> numbers formula" (interactive)
I dont really mind having a complex dialing tool, only something that makes it look like you are hitting a whole bunch of chevrons and sounds, with the end result being someone dialed.
I'll have a screwaround in the not so distant future and see what rubbish i spit out; if it turns into anything usable i guess extra complexity can be added.

Well, if ur a kid or a face book addict, you set up your face book account and get updates on your friends, you know spy and stalk them
For the rest of us, nothing, messaging tile, phone tile, email tile, all do the same thing as every phone out there does of telling you on home page that you have a message or missed call or email, so in my eyes not much advancement here.
Tiles are bigger, take up more space and the color options were given again confirm that they are designed for teens. Nothing better then a nice pink tile right right
Once you go over to the side to view you apps, call me a moron, but hasn't the advancement of multi columns to see more on one page developed in the past 100 years when displaying data not known at MS? I dont get why they just line them up in one column? They advertise it as simple phone, yet by the time u tag all you need to home page, because the the size of these tiles, ( non adjustable size) i have to scroll down just as long to find what I need as I did tapping with other phones.
Just my two cents

I thought the Live Tiles were one of the selling points of the OS.
The grid layout will scream it is an iPhone clone, and the home screen customization will scream an Android clone, and you know MS is trying to be different.
The last thing that went through my head when I first saw the tile interface was this being an iPhone copy.. my first thought was iPhone finally got pwnd.

In theory yes, but its the same concept that I will wear a bucket on my head to look different, but it doesnt make it efficient or practical.
No matter what they do they will all look similar, just like windows and mac and linux, they all have the same style, look diff but same format to follow, and that is because that format works.
Like cars, they all have an engine, and wheels and seats, they just dress them up differently to stand out.
What WM did here is take away what is needed and gave us a shell of a car, and said hold on, we might get u teh wheels and doors later.

I actually find the live tiles helpful and with one flick of the finger I get the info I want. The problem with the HTC Sense UI (although they have pioneered the ideology of glancable information on the mobile phone), is that it also required add-ons to make it workable (Cookie home tab or maxsense) because navigating wasn't always that straightforward.
The Live Tiles are supposed to be big to display info (look at how Weather Channel App is using the live tile) and to be glancable. Another problem I found with the HD2 was that everyone was trying to shove way to much info on one screen, there are limited.
Going back to the original question, the live tile is really just the Contact Tile, it provides no real information (from what I can see) other than it is easy to spot on the phone amongst the other tiles. Since this is one of my main ways of contacting people, the visual changes (it animates more than any other tile) helps me get to people without hunting for it.
I reallt don't see why this should be deemed a "Teen" feature?
Anyway my final point is, some will like and some won't.

If the hd2 fit your needs so well, why did you jump at launch to a brand new OS that all of us knew was going to be missing a couple of features???
As for the live tiles, the point is to give you info at a glance. Yes currently, only weather apps, and contacts tiles are really taking advantage of it, but that is going to change. Beezz twitter app today will use live tiles to give you mentions and direct messages. Other programs hopefully will follow suit.
The live tile is a tool. As with all tools it can make things that are useful and useless.
The standard tiles maybe unnecessarily big but tiles like Weatherbug that display information without having to run the app are great.
They can also be fun. It's nice to see album art from the last Zune artist you played or your Xbox avatar or pictures of friends.
They also allow you to do things you can’t do on other phones. You can pin a specific FM radio station to the start screen, or a web page, or a map with directions or a favourite album. With one tap you’re exactly where you need to be. It doesn’t get more efficient than that.
Personally I'd like to see an option of grouping four tiles into one. I don't need massive tiles for things like IE, messaging, hotmail and Marketplace. That would free up space for more useful tiles.

Nice point which I agree with, I have 4 emal addresses, so after the phone tile, people tile, messages tile and then 4 diff email address tiles, i have to do a lot of scrolling to see other things, so having a small icon for sms alert, and email alert and missed call alert would free up an entire page for me.
If i was developer of this OS, id give an option to either have it tile mode, or smaller active tiles as app launchers like we had on HD2 along with time and small notifiers bottom of screen, give ppl options to customize.

+1, last time I asked about the usability of the OS, and without getting a clear answer the thread went into a flame war.
just something else i thought about.
Many saying that MS wanted to develop something different.
How does putting the lock and unlock button up top JUST LIKE IPHONE has had for a while now, make this phone diff?
They sereously went the wrong way. . . This BS OS can not be compared to Android. The Android OS is 99% customizable. . . This. . . I can't even describe. It's like the Apple OS, just uglier. . . Good work Microsoft. . . They should have called it VistaMobile instead of WMO7. . . Now the question is, will they just give up and bail on this OS or actually make it better.
Too bad, the hardware is so nice.

In the past week everywhere I went and pulled my phone to use it everybody was like "wow such a nice phone" so I am pretty sure there will be success sooner or later. And Microsoft didn't put so much money in this to just give up after a few months because some people with much better phones and so infinitely more freedom than any WP7 who need to play Linux Brotherhood on their device 24/7 would say different.
Live tiles are similar to widgets in android, they offer information at a glance without having to go into the app. For example, weather bug shows the temperature and current weather of your location from the homescreen. ITN News displays a picture of the latest news article.
Some tiles also have animations making the home screen look better.
The difference between Widgets and Tiles is that Tiles get information using Push rather than Pull. When you receive a new message it will be pushed to the tile so that it displays a 1, when new news hits ITN the image is pushed to the tile.
This, rather than the traditional way of polling a source ever x amount of minutes ensures that connection is only made when need to thus saving battery.
Other advantages tiles have over competitors is the fact that all tiles are uniform, in the same format and style meaning nothing looks out of place on the homescreen.

Seriously, what are you on about? If you are referring to the physical unlock button on the device then this quite clearly has nothing to do with phone manufacturers and not Microsoft. Also, on/off buttons have been at the top of most devices since God knows when.

It isn't, it's just a different approach. All OS's have copied from each other in some way or another. Whilst the same, the Microsoft way does have some advantages which I've highlighted in my post above.
My friend just ditched sprint and the evo for the hd7. I think ms did a great job with this os. Yes we are currently missing a few features but I think ms is trying to market to the noobs in the smart phone community. Making this a easy phone to use. Slowly within time they will make this os more customizable. I hear there already meeting with the guy who's been working on jailbreaking the os to make his apps official through market place. You guys have to remember that 90% of smartphone buyers don't even know the true features of a smartphone. Why do you think apples sells so much

Hello,
I am in no way, shape, or form a developer nor do I understand most of the jargon but I have this idea I thought to put out into the world and hopefully one day use it while marvelling at developer sorcery ?
So, I challenge myself to read every day, most of it done on my phone for convenience, but I often get sidetracked fiddling with my phone and other stuff.. Now, I have the whatsapp widget installed and if it weren't for that I wouldn't read my messages as often. This led me to search for a widget that shows pages of whatever book you want but couldn't find any. And that is the void I thought someone could fill. I can't be the only one struggling to accomplish my daily reading quota ?
I managed a primitive way to accomplish that one night and took screenshots of a book I had and saved the pictures in page number order and used the gallery widget to shuffle through the pictures. This was done when I was insomiac one night and bored out of my mind. It was great in the end but obviously impossible to keep up.
For me, it would be great to dedicate one page of my screen to a widget that can show a page of x book. Maybe even have it turn to the next page after a certain interval of time (like live wallpapers).
Please excuse me if my post was longer than needed or if this wasn't even the right place to post... Have a great day everyone!
