No Service and phone no longer working as a phone - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi all
I've had the phone for over a year (from Vodafone UK) and it's been working fine 99% of the time. However, yesterday it suddenly displayed "No Service" and the following started happening:
- can't press "Phone" or the green dial button - therefore I can't make or receive calls
- can't press "Contacts" or access contacts in any other way
- can't get ActiveSync to run
- googlemail account only connects when I do send/receive - but I can't change the settings
- incoming text messages display the number of the person and not their name (hence methinks the SIM or phone memory isn't being recognised)
- can't access Tasks or Calendar (neither will they display on the home page)
- when I try to launch Tasks via Business Appls I get this error "No program memory available. Tap Start > Settings > System tab > Memory, stop programs that did not automatically stop, and try again." - but this achieves nothing
- and generally the phone is no longer usable as a phone
Have spoken with Vodafone support who reckon the device is faulty and needs to be sent back to Vodafone.
Have checked the SIM in another phone and it worked fine (albeit with no contacts on it - which I'm thinking is because they're all on the v1615 but not being recognised?).
Is this a known fault? Is it a case of restoring to factory default (which would be a pain because I spent ages last year getting it set up how I like it)?
Any advice much appreciated (especially as this is my first post)
Thanks
SC

Sounds like you do have to restore it to factory Just make sure to backup youre contacts, sms, mail and so on. Move files you need to pc or sd card. If you planing on having a certain setup on youre phone you should take backup of its state when you have installed all apps and so on whit Spb Backup or simulare of youre choice.
Anyway, I would not for the world send it in before I had tried to hard reset. VERY odd if they didnt recommend you todo so on phone?

Thanks Raiisak
I can't access any contacts (or notes, tasks, calendar stuff) on the phone itself, so I'm assuming Exchange will keep hold of these. I've copied all other files onto my SC Card ... but how do I copy SMS's?

search for PIMBackup...an excellent backup/restore tool for sms and contacts and a lot more.

phone not alerting me of new sms

Hi
I'm using a norwegian version of this device, default HTC rom, not branded.
I've installed MioMap, AlenSoft QuickClock and HTC Dark Phone Pad International.
I use both the keylock and press the "off" button to turn off the display when I'm not using the phone.
Then after a month use without any trouble I find that from time to time the display turns on by it self. Not any scheduled callendar events, no new sms/mms, no new call (or missed call) and no sound alert, just the display turning itself on. But, if I go into the message center, it tells me that I've one new sms.
This is frustrating, since I often get sms messages related to work operations and rely on getting them in time. And it's frustrating to have to check manually all the time for new sms'es and not be able to rely on the phone telling me that I've got a new one.
So why don't the phone alert me with sound since it for sure have recieved a new sms? (yes the sound is on) And I guess it's the underlaying phone application that doesn't repport to the quickclock application (that displays the number of new sms'es on the home screen), so I don't see it even there, have to go all the way into the messaging application.
Another thing.
Active Sync is also running without my permission from time to time.
I don't sync my phone very often (just for file transfer) and I have unchecked all elements so that it should not need/try to sync them.
I also find that the device is slowing down after 5-6 days. The respons on my screen tapping is slow and not precise. I don't have many files and try to delete the inbox/sent elements/deleted elements every other day to keep it small. I do have a storage card, sandisk 6GB micro sdhc. (working great).
I suspect that this has to do with active sync running in the backgrund when not needed, so I go to start - settings - system - memory, select running programs and end the active sync from there. After a couple of minutes the device is up to speed again.
Any thoughts on this problems? Solutions?
Thank you for any feedback on this.

Almost perfect...

I got my Diamond last Thursday and have been using it with my secondary sim whilst I got used to the phone and became used to using it intuitively... I am happy to say I am now completely comfortable with it and it is *almost* perfect!
Changes:
*Bepe 0.97 FIXED
*Diamond Advance Config tool
*S2U2
*Comm Manager advance.
Thank you to all the great people working to made this device all it should be! Donations forthcoming very soon!
I have just a few questions with regard to my remaining issues:
*The contacts summary page which comes up after ending a call, any way to suppress that?
*Is there any way to bluetooth contacts, files (pictures/music etc) to and from another mobile phone? I tried transferring a jpg image, an MP3 ringtone and a contact via bluetooth from a Sony Ericsson W880i but all three failed!
*Is there any way to display contacts as FORENAME SURNAME as opposed to SURNAME, FORENAME?
Thank you in advance for any advice regarding the above
Anyone?????
Think I might be able to help you out there.
1. To get rid of that contacts thing at the end of a call, tap Phone on the Home screen, then tap Menu and then Options. Go to the Advanced tab right at the end and untick "Add new phone number to Contacts at end of call".
2. To receive files of any kind over bluetooth, you have to have Bluetooth turned on in the Comm Manager, but you also need to have the Beam option turned on. If you have the modified Comm manager then you should be able to see the Beam option in there.
3. All my contacts show up as "forename surname" already, I think it might be to do with how you have it set up in Outlook, because I remember Outlook had it "surname, forename" by default and that drove me mad until I changed it. Hunt around in Outlook to change the way they're displayed, then do a sync, and I'd say that should do it.
Dave
Thanks for taking the time to reply Dave!
The contact summary still seems to come up I did untick this box a few days ago and maybe its a bug but the screen still appears on finishing a call.
I turned on Beam and the bluetooth file transfer now works just fine, thank you!
I will sync up when I get home and have a play around with Outlook, thanks for the suggestion I think that will remedy this problem too.
Is there an advanced contact manager or SMS manager out there by chance? Sending and receiving a few SMS today and the whole transition from TF3d to the WM is a bit jarry, and browsing contacts isnt really possible without the stylus... so far these are the only small niggles in day to day use! The latest version of S2U2 really helps usability and allows you to lock the hardware buttons when you get an incoming call... no more calls answered by mistake with this app!
No bother.
I never manually browse the contacts list because it scrolls very strangely, its impossible to successfully pick a contact.
The best way to select a contact when sending a text, I've found, is to type the first letter or two of their name, eg "DA" and then everyone with a name starting with DA is listed, eg DAD, DAVE etc. Much better than scrolling a list. Its the same behaviour when making a call and you want to select a contact; just bring up the Phone app (the one with the keypad) and start typing their name on the number pad.
I agree though that the process of moving from TF3D to WM6 when sending a text is very clunky. I wonder would HTC consider developing their own TouchFlo messaging software that covers all aspects of sending SMS and email. Unfortunately the iPhone still has the advantage there; you still have to get out the stylus every now and then on the Diamond.
I have most of my most frequently used numbers under the People tab in TF3D... good suggestions as above though.
May give this a try if I cant get along with the SMS...

2 phone related issues

1. is there any option/tweak to have contacts saved in phone memory automatically saved in the sim card too ? so much rom flashing gave me a pain in the but after loosing several phone numbers (p.s. automatically save new number to contacts doesn't work too .. maybe cause i use the standard winmobile dialer ?)
2. does the diamond have the basic "redirect calls" option? i've looked for it in settings > phone > services but i can't find it
p.s. searched the forum but didn't find anything related
1. an alternative is a program call PPCPimbackup (free)which will back up all your contacts/sms/call logs/appoinments/tasks/. search google for it.
2. try in Call Forwarding

Microsoft My Phone - SMS restore problem for Xperia!

So I decided to try flash another ROM, and this time I thought I'd try backing up my personal data using the Microsoft My Phone service, just to see how it works. As well as that, I made a complete backup of my phone using SPB backup.
The ROM flashing over, I attempted to restore my old sms messages to the phone from the server, and the My Phone application DID appear to download them. However, upon checking my inbox (as well as every single other mail folder), I found nothing. Delving a little deeper, I was able to find a couple of pre-ROM-flashing messages using the phone's built-in search function; when installing My Phone, I let microsoft text me the link, and a search for 'my phone' illicited the old text message. However, the search function does not allow for me to trace messages back to their location, and this message (even after being opened) did not appear in the sms inbox.
I haven't lost anything because of my other backup, but if possible I would like to find all of these loose messages floating about somewhere in the memory banks of my Xperia. It would be nice if Microsoft got it half right, like normal. Does anybody have an idea where to start?

Click to collapse
dude, it's almost 200 messages, it is going to cost him too much! or maybe I didn't get what u said, would u be a bit more clear?
I guess this is a late reply but I just got me a K850i yesterday.
Love these classic SE phones and wanna have one of each model.
This is the way I could come over the problem of sending SMS to another phone (To my main phone, the Desire HD)
Saved messages is stored on the SIM-card so an USB Sim-card reader for PCs could save a lot of tedious work
Else...
I had only three messages to send to the DHD.
Open/View the message and select "Options" - "Save the message".
Back two steps to the Messaging main screen and choose "Saved messages"
In saved messages select "View" - "Options" - "Mark & Copy".
For the whole message, insert the marker at the beginning and press "Mark" keep marking the full message and select "Copy"
Now...
Go to the "Main Menu" - "Organizer" - "Notes"
In "Notes" Highlight "New Note" and press "Add"
"Options" - "Copy & Paste" - "Paste" Your complete SMS should now be a Note file, just Press "Save"
At last...
Back to the "Notes" first screen, Highlight your SMS/Notes and "Options" - "Send" - "Via Bluetooth"
You should at first...
Have paired your phones by Bluetooth.
Found that my three SMS (in total less than 100 characters) took up 15% of the SIM-storage space.
Notes files sent to a PC will get the *.vnt prefix.
Sent from my ASUS laptop tethered by Wifi to the Desire HDs Internet connection.
