Sooooo I foolishly formatted my SD card from FAT16 to FAT32 without transferring any of my files over to my desktop, therefore, everything has been erased...the cabs I dont really care about as I can just add them again, however the pictures are a devastating loss, there were many pictures on that card which I loved and would like to see again. I am aware that there is a tool somewhere out in googland (and hopefully xdaland) that allows me to bring back image files. If anyone knows the name or location of this tool it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Chris

I've used data recovery programs before but can't remember the name of which one i prefer. I'd recommend just doing a google search for either "data recovery software" or "picture recovery". There are many free ones out there so i wouldn't suggest buying one unless your too lazy to read up on which ones best.
If i remember the name of which app i've used before i'll post back,
Good Luck!
Solution is here

Try this
http://www.ufsexplorer.mobi/
if you format it i dont think you can recover it. formating wipes it clean. deleting simply deletes the address to where your data is located. recovery programs works by being able to relocate the data without the address.
@ denniegst: Somehow I don't think that formatting destroys data irrevocably. Otherwise utilities like Acronis Disk Director would be at least partly useless. And there would be no need whatsoever for things like DBAN, Eraser, Drive Cleanser... you name them.
@ OP: Provided you never saved anything on your newly-formatted SD card, there should be a very good chance of recovering your data.
At the time of typing this, I have a SanDisk-labelled RescuePRO mini-CD sitting on my desk. I got it with a memory card some time ago, never installed it, but it's supposed to save your bacon in situations such as these. Doubtless there are many others.
Ok, thanks for the posts guys, I believe I recovered the pictures. I used the RDMobile, thanks for the link!
slight problem, I ran the recovery, found the files, but when try to open it a pop up comes up saying;
There is no application associated with "Deleted SD Files"(what i called the backup) Run the application first, then open this file from within the application.
A bit confused on how to open the file to view my recovered files. any pointers
( I apologize for being a pest ;] )
...After looking through the settings, I thnk the problem might be where it asks me to define the file i saved...I am not quite sure what to define the file as?
sorry for the delay
I have not check these posts in a while sorry, the program you need is EZRecovery Pro, it will restore just about anything, deleted, formatted, raw etc.. do a Google/torrent search, by far the best and easiest recovery program I have found. And don't worry if you have written file to your card over the past few weeks, you would be surprised at how much data can be recovered even after a long period of write and rewrites. As always, if you like it, buy it.
try badcopy its good for memo cards and usb devices

Hi, guys,
Here's one from Kaiser newbie (sorry if there's an answer to this somewhere, tried, but couldn't find it):
Have a (un)brand(ed) new Kaiser and this 2GB Micro SD Card. The thing is, no matter what I do, I can't force that bundled TT6 Navigator (or any other version, for that matter!) to install on my SD!!!
Before you ask, I need it because I am frequently commuting throughout Balkans, and (as if that alone wasn't enough ) the ONLY map TomTom released covering that area so far was v6.08 East Europe BETA which has around 170MB. There's a lot of local forums stating that it is quite operational, but needs a bit of tweaking to get it there, which includes puting both TT6 app and the Eastern_Europe-Map folder to the root of SD.
Piece-a-cake, I thought, but then I hit the wall... I do get to a point of being asked for an install location, but even if I select my SD card ("Storage card"), I end up with TT6 installed in default Program Files folder! Tried with ActiveSync, manual install, CabInst and some other reg-tweakers (promising to solve things but failing miserably), etc., to no avail.
Not just that app, to be specific, some other behave likewise, but then, there are also those that play along, so...
What gives?!?
Try making a "My Documents" folder in the Root of the SD card, then install there or if you already have the maps there, just copy the map folder into My Documents on your SD card.
Are you sure the actual app is installed in the devices main memory. When you install to the SD it still has to install some files on the device - such as the shortcut to the actualy program.

Well, tried that one up, as well as making SD card "Program Files", but doesn't work that way. I'm sure it's because after I move the "Navigator" folder from MyDevice Program Files to SD card, there's a plenty of registry keys still pointing out to the default location... The problem is I can't make ActiveSync to actually install the damn thing anywhere on SD card.

Yes, because I located several folders on MyDevice with TomTom related files, and NONE on my SD card...
Thanks anyway, guys, any help is appreciated.
Quick update:
I did the hard reset. I'll try out "fresh" install, maybe something got messed up in my registry, then I'm back with results - usefull if someone else out there have the same problem (and I've found quite a few of those unfortunate souls ).

Yeah, this isn't going to work. The installation needs to go to the SD card in the first place.
Uninstall whatever it is you want on the card.
When you do the installation, make sure the card is in the phone. Connect your phone to your PC and don't immediately launch the installation. In WMDC or Active Sync, go to "Add/Remove Programs." There's a check box on the screen that will open that says "Install applications to default location" or something along those lines. If you can uncheck it, do so (it's not available sometimes).
When you actually do the install, check the mobile phone - it should be prompting you for where you want to install the app. Select the radio button for the Storage card, and you should be good to go.
Ok, now this is ridiculous!
After a hard reset, tried to install TTN 6, and, when asked for an install location, selected "Storage card"... Nevertheless, the damn thing installed to the Mobile device instead (again, so I give up trying to put it on SD for good!), but, to my surprise, I have managed to start it up and it even recognized my map ("Eastern_Europe-Map" folder on SD card)! Boy, was I happy as a pig in the s... Simpsons Movie ! Quited and started the app several times to ensure it's lock and loaded for good - yep, it was working all right...
But, guess what? After a later soft reset, TomTom hit me back with "No map found" again, seems like it has lost the "show-me-the-map-location-key-thingy" from the registry!!!
So, who da f#$% do I have to kill for this?
Try installing it from the sd card - ie put the cab files on the sd card and load it from there.
Thanx, tried that one already (described in my previous post), it got me closest to the goal, ie. that's how I got TT6 recognizing my map from SD card and working as a peach 'til next soft reset...
What could change in execution of an app after just reseting a device? The only thing coming to my mind is some Windows-style-run-once-regkey that screws things up, which makes no sense since the app should be legit, coming bundled with the Kaiser an all that...
Any idea?
I would guess it more to some registry settings remaining from the flawed installations.
Is there a setting in TT that tells it where to find the maps?
I don't know how, but, hey - it's working now!
Right.
First of all - it's working. I don't know the apparent reason, but what i did was:
1) A hard reset.
2) None of that Spring Backup restore stuff. Although I used to restore just emails and personal database, left it out completely this time around.
3) Installed manually all of the usual tweaks, apps and stuff first, then put the TT6 cab down to my SD card again.
4) Synchronized my emails, contacts and the likes using ActiveSync.
4) Installed TT6 from SD card again, but before starting it for a first time, made a full Spring backup - the idea was, if the thing tends to work just for the first time it's started, I could easily restore it should it start loosing it again after a soft reset.
And that was it. Then started TT6, played around with it for a couple of minutes, and did a soft reset.... TA-DAAAAAH, it's up and running again and again, so no problem with it anymore.
Is it just me, or this makes no sense whatsoever, but, hey, it's working so why bother with it any longer.
Thanks a lot for your help, see you again in next week's episode of "I don't know how, but, hey - it's working now!"
Cheers.
I just flashed my Kaiser to Dutty and as a result it's wiped my Onenote Mobile notes (no great surprise there).
Before I flashed, I took a Sprite Backup. Does anyone know where the actual "notes" live? Is in a directory or registry entry somewhere? I'd like to restore them if possible. I have searched XDA Devs, but there's nothing I can see explaining this.
Thanks in advance...
\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote Mobile.
I've been looking for a way to move them to another folder but I cannot find it.
Ta,
Dave
Thank You!
Thanks very much for this solution. I copied from the backup and I can see all my notes again.
You just saved me a lot of frustration

one note 2010

one notes stores in local device memory instead of storage card. any solution to store the one notes 2010 files in storage cards. Please help me
just navigate to \Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote Mobile... highlight the "OneNote Mobile" folder, select menu edit, copy...then navigate to your storage card...place it anywhere you want it by hitting menu, edit, paste. Now they will be on your storage card for future retrival

But how to make OneNote store to SD?
Haven't figured that out yet either...still working
I think it's Pocket Mechanic that has the option to move applications to run from storage card...I've successfully moved most everything I've tried with it. Has anyone tried 'moving' folder to storage card with this app? I'm not sure how it works...if it leaves a shortcut behind pointing to new location on card maybe? I use OneNote for work, and can't afford to screw it up and have down time trying to fix, so wondering if anyone has tried that route yet?
UPDATE: Tried above method, and it did not work. Has anyone else found a feasible way to do this yet? With it storing audio recordings in .wav format, it's basically not usable without being able to store to storage card. I run out of memory in less than one minute.
The frustration continues
Hi everybody,
I have been grappling with this damned issue with OneNote 2007 on my HD2 forever. It’d be nice if some of the top dogs here at the XDA took a minute or two out of their busy schedules to fix us up with a way to force OneNote to SD card. I mean come on people, don’t you leave us at the mercy of windows unpredictable array of hangs, crashes and total system annihilations, give us a way out.
I have personally wormed around the registry and found a way for that whole attachment thing JVolger. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>OneNote Mobile>12.0.
Once there edit the attachments String value with your favorite registry editor and change the string entry with the address of the folder where you like one note to save your attachments.
Now if someone could figure out a way to force one note to save to the SD entirely, I would be one happy man!!
Hi,
I already did my research on this topic using the search function provided.
However, I can't get anyone giving the correct solution.
So,
Did anyone here knows how to change Notes SAVE PATH ??
I tried to change the registry in :
(HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Notes) from \Internal Storage into \Internal Storage\Notes
HOWEVER,
everytime I saved the new registry, and DO a soft reset, it always revert back to the original condition, and sometimes, the registry value is "\Internal Storage\Notes" BUT when I save new notes, it was saved in the root of internal storage (as usual).
Please help me to find solution for this one
Thanks so much guys...

omg....please accept my sincere appologies for my ignorance and for my feeble attempt to help in resolving such an important issue.
i solemnly promise to never, never jump and try to help without:
- reading the question (you so gracefully reedited after my answer) at least 5 times.
- searching the forum for similar problems.
- researching and learning all the wm manuals.
sarcasm aside, did you tried "my method"?
please note (pun intended) that even if i did not "get" yr question (but i did!), i certainly didn't deserve the slap. usually here we answer with a "thank you but this was not what i meant". try this next time...
and for the record, i do have all my notes in internal storage\notes as i said and with the simple method i described. no registry editing needed.
i also checked the registry and it is still showing "internal storage" and not "internal storage\notes". the path is not reflected in the registry and i do not have an explanation for this...
and here is the proof that i did understand yr question and that my simple, no registry editing, "just use the program settings" method works. look at the path and at first note....
sir... I'm sorry beforehand if I sound rude to you... and if it did, please know that I never meant to
Ok, back to the topic, I did actually tried your simple method, by going to 'Notes', and Options, Save to: 'Internal Storage'... but this eventually gets the 'Notes' to save its new files at the root directory of 'Internal Storage'.
How could you get that kind of setting to save your notes at 'Internal Storage\Notes' instead ?
Could you direct me and give me a guidance on how to direct newly saved notes files to 'Internal Storage\My Documents\Notes' ?
Once again, I would like to say thank you for your willingness to try solve this matter with me
When you're in notes theres a folder drop down list on the top left, you can add a notes folder there and it will put it in Internal Storage, I got mine in Internal Storage\Notes as well but can't get it working trying Internal Storage\My Documents\Notes

glad i am not the only one....that's the way to do it, nothing to add.
maybe is not recognizing more than 2 levels..."Internal Storage\My Documents\Notes" is a 3 levels path.
to the OP: glad to help when i can!
FOR KIEN & KUKURIKU :
Thanks so much for the kind explanation you guys have given.
Eventhough I can't save notes in 3 level path, but at least Im happy enough to save in internal storage\notes.
Thank you guys
I know that some software definitely can run from the memory card. What I mean is not like: when you install the software, the device asks you to choose the location (install to device of memory card), then you choose the memory card. No, I dont mean that. What I want to say is: for some programs, when installing them, you choose the location to install is the device, then go to the Program Files folder in the device, copy the folder of that program to memory card, uninstall the program. Now you can run the program from the .exe file in the folder you've just copied to Memory card (or make a short cut and copy to the Start up folder in Window). Some programs allow you to do that (I know most of the games for example), and some are just not.
So, that would be perfect if we know which programs can be like that, then we can save memory of the device (and hopefully our Kaiser can run faster, I'm not sure about that, just guessing). Of course the answer will be: come on, just try it dude! But, if some of us here already know which program can allow that, we can save time of others. So just post the program you know to this thread, I'll try to make a list updated regularly for everyone, and hopefully the running folders for those programs also ...
I'm not sure if there was a thread like this previously. I tried to search and there're something related to, but not dedicated to. So if you know about a thread doing exactly what I'm doing here, just tell me (and Mod) to delete it.
I've managed it fine with Prince of Persia HD
I don't get why you wouldn't install to the card in the first place? If your method works, it means that the installer hasn't put anything outside of the program's folder apart from the shortcut and uninstaller entry, so it's not like you'd save anything by moving and uninstalling. For those where it doesn't work, there HAVE been some things stored in other locations but they are required for the program to work and uninstalling removed them - if you install to storage card those things will still be on the internal memory but it's usually a small footprint, and at least you'll be able to use the program...
Some apps install everything to the device whether you like it or not even if the bulk of the stuff will work happily on the card.

I used to think if we install to meomory card it also put something outside, but I guess you right! Anyway, it is a good way to save time too if you flash ROM quite often, that you can just plug the memory card and run the program ...

Hi All,
I have been stuck up with a problem, not sure if this is the right forum to ask teh doubt..but as this thread is dedicated to Storage cards i thought to give t a try.
Recently i had used my phones storage card on a system and my card got affected by a virus. All the card name and files in it were changed to special characters. when i checked (again on my pc this time) there is no data on my card, its hodden and only a file called "Secret.exe" on my card. However on checking the properties i can see that the used memory is quite huge which means my data is there on teh card but is not visible.
I had some imp data on the card so not possible to format the card.
Does any one have come across this virus and knows the way to extract my data?
Any kind of help will be appreciated, as i have checked on google and am afraid have not been able to find even one perfect solution for this one on a SD card.
---------------------------------X------------------------------
Thanks a ton...
Haven't come across this virus, but if you type 'secret.exe' into Google there is a lot of hits, including a few with 'removal' in the title
May help, may not, but let us know how you get on
Thanks Fallen Spartan....
I had checked most of the links given by Google and they are mostly for the PC getting affected where in u need to change the some registries to see the files.
I have tried those but have not succeeded.
Tried several shredder softs to extract the data as well... i am not concerned over the card...its teh data which i badly require and i have no no backup
does your card have an "autorun.inf" file on it? if so delete it.
Yeah Josefcrist... my card indeed has an "autorun.inf" file on it... but i am not sure i am able to delete it... any special way...tried shift deleting it couple of times...
Use a data recovery software get what you can off card, then format your card nice and simple removal
Re: data recovery BadCopy Pro works well.
Thanks Stylez i will try this soft and will let you know...
I did try recovering the data through a diff soft though which didnt work...

Its meant for pc's not sd cards....look at nimish_fun's 2nd post. He has already tried solutions for pc's
a sdcard connected in drive mode or in a sdreader
can be scanned and cleaned with a normal virus scanner on the pc
same deal with undelete and anything else you can do with an external hd really
unless ur SD Card Reader is locked. then you have to move the switch.
