Is there a way to hide pictures from the Gallery application? Should I put the files in a hidden folder? Or is there a certain way to do it?

to hide pictures from being found in Gallery, add a "." in front of the name of the folder .. so if you want to hide 'hiddenpictures', rename the folder to '.hiddenpictures'
theres an app called HidenSeek it looks and acts like a flash light but when u press the menu 3 times prompts u with a password and bam hidden photo album...but be sure to exit out of the app or it stays open and its not so hidden anymore....i used it more as a flash light..lol

.hide
Every time I have something that I want to hide, I just add ".hide" to the file name.
For example
file_name.mp4.hide (the .hide doesn't show up)
or
file_name.jpg.hide
once again, the ".hide" does not show. just prevents someone from opening that file.

Can it still be accessed through astro using this method?
You can create a file called .nomedia in the folder with the pictures you want to hide from Gallery. A reboot may be required also.
http://androinica.com/2009/08/28/ho...iles-from-appearing-in-android-media-players/
It works for music, videos and images.
A reboot is not required. All you need to do is prompt it to rescan the sdcard for media, which can be done by issuing this command:
am broadcast -a android.intent.action.MEDIA_MOUNTED -d file:///sdcard
** note that there is no visual queue that it is doing anything, but it does trigger media scan.
If you have dev tools installed you can also run media scanner from there, which *does* give a visual indication.
I suggest using dot-folders to hide media. It is much cleaner than renaming all your media. The media will still work through a filebrowser that supports hidden files, like astro, and renaming a single directory rather than every file in it is much less effort.... "mv /sdcard/mediatohide /sdcard/.mediatohide; am broadcast -a and....." to hide, and "mv /sdcard/.mediatohide /sdcard/mediatohide; am broadcast -a and....." to unhide.
That .hide method is annoying.
A simple app that can password protect folders containing any file is needed.

Annoying? It is annoying when some lazy slob asks for someone to do everything for them when they already have everything they need right in front of them.

No , whats annoying is something as simple as Gallery app being screwed up this bad.
The .hide method is a weak workaround.
Example: I have ASL lite app. When I go to gallery I have to scroll through dozens of pics of sign language to get to the pics I want to see. Using the .hide method also hides them from the ASL app.
You add Icons to this and its just one massive pain in the ass.
The camera shouldnt be defaulting to a Gallery that has "all pics/vids on SD card" as a unchangeable default setting.

wow, really? no. it is completely annoying to do this stuff manually. that is the reason we have apps. that's like telling someone "it's annoying when you lazy slobs drive your cars when you have feet". sorry, not going to fly.
I havent tested the .nomedia file method, but that sounds like the ticket.
The file explorer app developers should add functionality to long press on a folder and pick "add .nomedia" action.
I have done the .nomedia thing a number of times, it works flawlessly. It hides them from gallery, but keeps them useable with their original program.
Photo vault
There is an app called photo vault it use a pin to access your pics and hides them from all other apps.
There is also APP vault too
Hello All,
Does any one know of a nice app to lock pictures on your phone ?
Cheers
Steve
what do ya mean, such as not being able to delete those pics?
No, so that other people who pick up my phone do not see some of my pictures.
sorry, i did not make that clear
put the photos in a folder & name it ".private" (or any name but with the dot ".") the folder will be hidden & the album app doesn't scan it for pictures. & whenever you want view the files, just rename it by removing the dot "." from folder name & start the album app... now all those pictures can be viewed.. again if you want to hide them just rename back with the dot. but it takes a couple of minutes for them to be removed from albums automatically.
I've looked at all the apps I can find in the market that allow you to store provate pics but they all seem to not be up to scratch with either failing at being truly private (I don't think I saw any that used proper encryption) and/or don't have a proper viewer or slideshow option. Does anyone know if such an app exists with proper encryption and a decent viewer?
I'd also like to know this

+1 on photovault! I use the videovault wich is the same but for vids.
It seems to do well with all my flics!!
I used to use Pandora, works well but then i got tired of it, since i just kinda store the pics and videos there after taking them, not really used for viewing. so what i do is make a folder using the included file explorer thing, and name it with a discrete name like.....97taxreturns....lol, and make sure to put a "." in front of the folder name, then i put all my stuff in there. its hidden from the gallery and the file explorer unless you use "menu-->show hidden"
but pandora is pretty nice to for the porn addicts.

I used Vaulty Free from the market. It seems pretty good. The ONLY thing you can find/see in your "My Files" are text files. And YES I tried to open them and it just comes up with scribbles scratch. So YES I can Hide my Streamed Porn Video, My Sancha's (mistress) nude pics and video from the wifey...Haha
It also hides the videos and pics from the gallery completely.

U have a "thanks" button.
Next time u store these things, store them all in one "base" folder. This way u can delete this one folder and the contents - sub-folders and files would be auto-deleted.
Evening all..
So I've had a quick look through the forums, and not really seeing much about this...
I'm finding that the stock album/gallery app, although brilliant, is really annoying me! When you load the app, it shows the "Pictures" tab.. which appears to be ALL images it finds on the device (regardless of '.nomedia' files exising) The thing I'm finding the most annoying about this, is if I send someone a photo on whatsapp, or they send me one, it shows in this pictures tab. So If I take a picture, then send it to someone, it shows up as a duplicate image. A bit frustrating because I like the app!
Has anyone found a way of making it respect .nomedia files? Coming from CM10.1 on my old phone, so used to seeing it all in different folders.. can't remember if they were hidden before or not..
Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking about where I would store white/blacklists for media if I would be ignoring the tools that have been given to me by Android OS (given the fact that they are ignoring the .nomedia files). As my phone is not rooted I am not able to explore the sqlite databases, but maybe someone with a rooted phone could have a look? It's a long shot, but it's worth trying . I'll be rooting my phone as soon as it's possible without unlocking the BL (and I know I might be waiting for a loooooong while, but it happened with the Motorola RAZR, so I figured as this device is officially unlockable developers might be able to find an exploit sooner?).

First thing I tried, thought maybe I was making the .nomedia file incorrectly. No dice i'm afraid!
.nomedia should work, but it might take a while before the media library does a full rescan. Reboot the phone, connect it to PC and move a file to it, ... Those things could trigger it.

the same thing is annoying me!! i came from s3 and i was using a custom rom with i don't know which album type... i've been looking all over the place for a solution or a way of porting the album from another rom or the phone!! is there any?
I also like the Album application and wish it gets "fixed"
Sony disregarding the ".nomedia" files is weird, since its android's standard way of dealing with media, although the ".nomedia" files are a really bad solution in itself since they provide no configuration options: Either you have media scanned or not (I hate having album covers appearing mixed up with my photos in the gallery, but cannot add a ".nomedia" file since that would make the system not find my music). Adding files with a specific key name in a folder manually is not a user friendly way of managing what folders to scan.
I always wondered why Android does not provide a system level interface to define what media to scan and where.
PS: The N900 provided a file where the scan paths and supported file types could be configured. I feel like android gave a step back in this regard comparing to maemo/meego.

If you have a folder with pics which you don't wanna see in album app:
create a text file on PC with name .nomedia without content (nothing before the point!). Then move the text file in to this folder.
Hmm or is this only for songs??!^^ you have to try
You can also use apps to hide pics or videos like keepsafe or something.

Aha, ok.
And then you have to delete .nomedia and take it again in? Or doesn't will hide again?
And when you restart?
We have to clear cache of album and media storage everytime to hide images in album app
Ok.. Thx for trying. Then the only thing which we can use is an app..

This super annoys me to. In fact a couple of things annoy me with the app.
Here is my wish list for the Sony Album app.
1. That upon opening, it should start with the "My Albums" tab
2. That there be an option to sort photos other than date.
3. That when I want to select a wallpaper form my album app right from the home screen, I am not bombarded with the whole long list of 5000 photos. It should present me with folders to choose from.
4. If it wants to stick to displaying the "Pictures" tab as default upon opening, it should at least start with displaying only the camera album. Then a small shortcuts to enter all folders at once.
5. If it wants to stick to sorting only by date, it should at least follow the exif data of pictures. Sometimes after flashing a new ROM, I find my taken pictures in wrong orders. Most recent at the bottom and old ones at the top.

Hello everyone.
When I take a picture with my XZ2 camera, the file gets named by "00001, 00002,...".
Is there a way for the system to name it something similar to 20190119_1052... With the date on it?
Please, I'm looking for solution to this.
Thank you

Install DSC AutoRename from the playstore and then you can edit the name model. Everytime you shoot a picture, the app automatically rename it following your rules.

Thank for mentioning 'DSC Auto Rename' by Ciubex, which is an free and open source app! The application sources are available at: https://github.com/ciubex/dscautorename - Warning: This app is available in the F-Droid store, but the latest version is only available in the PlayStore.
An alternative app (in-app purchases for premium features) is 'Picture Manager' by 'j to the 4n': https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-picture-manager-timestamp-pictures-t3783796

I can recommend this one j to the 4n is a known user on XDA and has done some nice work.
I've also used the app, but not automatically i just run it from time to time.
Using the DSC_0001 format was nice for old cameras where there was no internal clock or timezones. But nowadays using a Timestamp as picture name is better in most cases. Sadly sony doesn't see it that way.

Sony should give their customers a choice, but the GoogleCam doesnât allow custom file names, too! OpenCamera does!
