T-Mobile 1.5 Update Question - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I am rooted and using the latest JF ADP 1.5 rom, will I still receive the ota update from T-Mobile USA, or do I need to return my G1 to stock rom?

You need to return it to stock firmware. follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350

Thank you very much for the link!

need help rooting...

i just updated to firmware 1.5 cupcake build number CRB43, how do i root it? i wanted to tether and use muti-touch...i downgraded to RC29 and followed the rooting steps but when i put in the firmware 1.5 it said error. If I just downgrade to RC29 and use f/w 1.5 without rooting then it works.
you will need to use a modified /custom rom after root, otherwise the device just unroots itself. please look into the various roms as some require new radio / spl to be installed and can brick the device.
I am using Cyanogen's rom which doesnt require the spl/radio change.
Hope this helps

Question about Rooting Cupcake

I have seen this question plastered all over the board, but no one has "officially" answered it. There have been a "it should", "it might", "maybe it will". I don't need those type of answers lol. My question is, has anyone officially and successfully rooted the official cupcake OTA. I had root on my last G1 and had to send it back due to some issues. So I have a complete fresh G1 that was already updated to Cupcake OTA so there isn't an option for me to use Fast Boot. I am on the latest version of the radio release 2.22.19.26I. If I downgrade to RC29 using the old school method, will I run into any problems. Please only reply if you have already done this yourself. Dont need any maybes lol don't know if Tmobile will give me another G1.
Firmware: 1.5 official Cupcake
Radio: 2.22.19.26I
Build: CRB43
Thanks for any assistance.
Oh and I have used the search buttons with no results.
Did it last week with a 1.5 OTA.
And the how to root thread is full of people saying that they successfully downgraded and rooted their 1.5 OTA phones, so you didn't look very hard.
Thanks for your $.02...
Going to go root right now.

Or, just wait a week or two for the official release of Froyo.
Is that what we are talking about? One or two weeks?
Flashing the rom is not that big of a deal, was concerned about unlocking the bootloader for AT&T and what was required to do it. Didn't want to make a mistake and have a $500 paperweight
Still not sure where to go or what to download after reading the stickies about AT&T to unlock the bootloader before the flash.
when I got my phone 3 weeks ago, they said 1 or 2 weeks then also, lol....
I have the same type phone att/rogers. I did this then this (thx Jack)
Follow this until rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
then
Follow the guide for rooted N1s from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686326
using...
# Links for update.zip: [DOWNLOAD][MIRROR][MIRROR]
# How to update your rooted Nexus One: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686734
I followed both of those to the T and it all worked out, once or twice i had a problem or 2.... but I just renamed the recovery image and it worked..... and something else, over all... for a noob, I did pretty good, lol. Very glad I did, sooooo much faster, smoother and flash support
No rooting needed if you use the "originally" leaked FRF50 build .. just download to the phone and run the update.
You may use google to search for the file and the instructions
Good luck!
Edit: sorry, just realized you have an AT&T one. So, you may need to root. My one I got directly from Google and it does not need to be rooted.

[Q] how to unroot

I recently rooted my phone using the unrevoked forever 3.22..i want to unroot it plz help..with step...also guide me how to install android 2.2
Flash a RUU from shipped ROM's:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=windows mobile&model=Buzz
Guide to that is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8926482&postcount=7
You can get an Eclair ROM from Shipped ROM's and then get an OTA (Over The Air) update, else, you can directly flash the official 2.2 ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887161
Remember a few things:
* If you install the 'Safe Version', you can root again later if you want
* If you follow the previous guide and get an OTA 2.2 update, you will lose your ability to root, and will be unable to do so till Unrevoked is updated.

[Q] Virgin OTA update fail

Hi there,
I'm trying to update my s-off, rooted IS to 2.3. There's an OTA update available which I understand won't work (and doesn't).
Is the best option to flash the stock ROM (hopefully my terminology is accurate) and then run the OTA update? Where can I get the stock files from?
Finally, is there a way to backup/restore my SMS history, contacts, etc. once I update?
I have clockworkmod installed.
Thanks to everyone in advance for helping someone without a clue!

If you are S-OFF and rooted, then just install a rooted GB ROM. Why take a chance and mess with a carrier OTA?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168796
This is a rooted version of the latest WWE GB ROM for the IncS. It is an unbranded ROM and doesn't have any carrier bloatware, just the standard HTC apps.

Thanks! Can I just go ahead and install, or do I need to wipe stuff first?
Will I then need to flash a new radio - and if so... how?
Thanks again.
If you already have gingerbread 2.3 than why on earth would you want to go back and download 2.3 again? Not understanding. And no I dont think you will need to flash a new radio going on the basis that you already have a gingerbread radio right now!!??!!

I just flashed this over my Froyo 2.2 install and it kept all of my apps and settings in tact. Yes you will also need to upgrade your radio and flash a GB radio, too. There is a thread in the Developers section about upgrading your radio.

You misunderstood the OP. He has a S-OFF and rooted IncS and wants to upgrade to 2.3. No where did he say he already had 2.3.
