ATT Tilt Connection Sharing/Tethering Question - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I used a downloaded CAB to enable Internet Connection Sharing on my Tilt.
I selected "MEdiaNet", turned off USB Connections in ActiveSync, and it's working as a modem. Congrats right?
Well, I'm worried that if I use it I'm going to get a monster bill from ATT.
I already use the browser on the phone all the time. Sometimes for hours at a time when I'm on the road, so I already have an unlimited PDA data package. I'm pretty sure there's some rule where I have to add laptop connect, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this without having laptop connect and what the result was, billing wise.
I don't want to pay $60 just to use my PC to logon to non-mobile/flash sites, but it sure would be handy.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Yeah others have done this and we have talked about it in previous threads.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=24147543

yea this has been discused many times.
My good friend works direct for ATT corporate, att doesnt care how you use the data as long as you dont go over 5gigs in a month, once you hit the 5 gig limit you are put on a watch list to see if you do it again, if you do it again then they send you a letter saying hey your using to much data, if you do it again after the letter they make you upgrade or discontinue your service. they have no way to check if you are tethered.

Tethering experiences.

Just wondering what personal experiences people have had with tethering to their phone via Internet Connection Sharing (without a tethering plan).
What happens if Cingular finds out? Can they find out? Anyone gotten busted? Any do's and don'ts? I transfer a lot of data so I just am curious. I don't really wanna find out I have a 500,000$ bill or anything ;P
Well i don't have Cingular, but FIDO screwed me hard enuff... I bought a 30$ prepaid card, thethered Internet on my laptop, just a little, only to see... damn, just logged in to MSN and it disconnected giving me an error that I had no more money on my card!!! :O 30$ trashed over the window only by logging on MSN? man, I suggest you stop tethering just in case... wait 'till your bill comes, look if you are lucky, and if you are, then thether away
I seldom use my ICS but I do use SlingBox and Stream Center Radio and have never seen anything different on my AT&T bill, but I don't use any of these excessively but so far no issues. I agree with creiz, use it for a while, note the tima and date, then check one bill to see what it looks like.

Can only get online using PIE

So I was sitting in class hoping to fire up Slingplayer on my stock AT&T Tilt and see what was on TV at home but no dice. Then on the way to the car I tried firing up Google Maps and again, no dice. Neither app seemed to think I was connected. Then when I got home (I live down the street from school) I tried sending & receiving my POP & IMAP accounts and again, nothing. However, this whole time, I have been able to get online with PIE just fine. I can browse to whichever web site I choose. Oh, and I tried using Opera and it wouldn't work, either! I'm really confused. And to top it off I just tried the wife's Blackjack and it is having the same exact problems. I know this may be the wrong forum for this but does anyone know what might be going on behind the scenes??
Having the same problem here in Sacramento. It started sometime late this afternoon for me. PIE works just fine but nothing else can connect to the Internet - Live Search, Google maps, Opera mini, RSS Hub, etc.
Same thing just happened to mine and my wife's tilts, simultaneously. PIE works, nothing else can connect to the Internet.. Not Opera, not Garmin XT, not HTC weather, nothing. WTF? Has AT&T done something? BTW, I'm in Portland, Oregon.
Having zero luck getting online here as well, was working at 6:30P in Seattle, and no connection (incl PIE) now...Just updated my ROM so having a network outage actually is a better outcome than self-inflicted phone bricking Any ATT page on network availability or anything?
I am down in Los Angeles, and am also not able to download any data on neither 3G nor Edge since late Tuesday (Feb 5, 2008) afternoon.
Same here except I can't get online at all with any program... maybe a problem with ATT network?
yeah i just experienced this today as well. I can only get online with the proxy settings, but when i disable it, its a no go! dammnit, and i cant do slingplayer with the proxy settings! I think its definitely an att network issue!
Mine's down in San Diego. At least it isn't just me... or is that not a good thing?

curiuos, what data plan do you have??
Could this be an attempt by ATT to prevent Internet sharing and force us to pay for tethering? If PIE still works, but everything else has dropped dead, is that a deliberate change by ATT? Anyone know enough to know if that's possible?
They are probably redirecting somethings to open of the connection ways. I have been having problems, but with a few apps I can run opera and Windows live but not resco update or resco radio or skype and some others. I was having major problems last night with connection problems, it was jumping from no service to Edge to G.

well, thats what im trying to troubleshoot now, Ive notice that im only able to get on when im connected thru att's proxy setting, but when i disable it, i cant get on at all. I have the mediawork data plan, so i wanna see if they are forcing people with a non pda plan to go thru the proxy to be connected!

I have the PDA Personal plan, but always disabled (unchecked) the proxy server option. I do not know the proxy server address, so I cannot test if my data download is restored if the proxy server option is enabled.
In case anyone's wondering I have the PDA Unlimited plans w/ 1500 text messages on both my Tilt & Blackjack. Haven't changed any settings yet and to be honest I'm too lazy to try and mess with it at the moment...
My plan is PDA personal. (Unlimited data) I don't think I have any proxys set. ( I soft reset after initial setup before the ATT customizations installed.) Everything worked great until our two tilts stopped accessing the internet simultaneously this evening. Except of course for PIE, which still works fine on both devices.
What is the proxy server setting for ATT...mine is off as well, and have never played with it to turn it on or off before...
Unlike the rest of you, Pocket Internet Explorer does not go online for me.
I have the settings in my Signature if anyone hasn't looked. Why whats so big about my data plan princeasi?

Problem w/ internet connectivity

I'm not sure what it is, but for some reason some of the programs are not connecting to the internet on my tilt. i'm running the q-mobile tilt rom, and the only thing that is connecting to the medianet is palringo. i can't access the new w/ windows live or internet explorer. any idea what it could be?
no ideas from anyone...i know they're a boat load of phone-tech savy people here, someone has to have some kind of idea?

Hi dude
more info plz!! I didn't well undertand your problem!
Are you trying to connect by your Pravider Data Connection (GPRS/HSDPA) or by WiFi??!!
sorry, i guess i didn't say that. i did say medianet, but i sure have been a little more concise. but yes, i'm trying to connect through att wireless medianet. the weird thing is, i am connected because i am able to go online with palringo and talk w/ contacts on aim, but IE doesn't work, windows live doesn't work either. i went through and changed some of the settings in media net per attwireless support forum, i'm looking for the proxy cab to download as it isn't on my phone, this could be the fix for it...but i highly doubt it because the internet was working on my phone just fine for the first week or so after i installed my ROM. now it just wont connect anymore, and i know i didn't do anything except uninstall solitaire and a few other games
ok...not much progress, but i guess this is a start. instead of getting an error message when i try to open a page w/ IE, in the status bar it says "Locating..." "Opening...", "0 Kb"...then it just stops, and nothing loads up. I'm stumped

First of all sorry, but i'm not American, so correct me if i'm wrong: "ATT Wireless" is your Phone Provider, right? and you are trying to connect to internet using the Provider Data Connection and not Wi-Fi, e.g. through your home router (Wi-Fi = Wireless but not "ATT Wireless", names coincidence!!! ), right? if this is correct, you didn't answer me to the above-mentioned question (using Provider Data or Wi-Fi??)!!
So try to set this Windows options:
Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Networks Selection -> than select in the two options your Internet Provider service, more ,if you need, under the both tweak keys you can edit it, like proxy settings!
Hope to well undertand your problem!
Umm...i did answer your question, i did say it was attwireless. I'm guessing you're not familiar with NA cell phone providers, which i'm sorry we missed, but i did answer the question. No need for the rolling of eyes. But yes, as i said in some posts earlier, i did change those settings already as per the attwireless support forum on their website. But its still not working.

...ok, we misunderstanding, or better,i didn't well understand you!
However give a look here , maybe it helps you!
Ciao
its ok, no problem at all. thanx for the link but that didnt' work either.i really dont know whats going on with my phone, the internet worked flawlessly for the first 2 weeks i had my phone, then it just stopped working yesterday. well, it stopped working for every other program except for palringo, and i'm almost certain that it is not sms based, so i dont understand why that would work, and not other programs.
UPDATE:
ok, so i tried using the media new gprs connection with my 8125, same situation. i'm not sure what on earth it could be, but w/e it is, i can use palingro and aim pocket pc on my tilt, but i just can't get any data from web or anything else. go figure. i think i'm just gonna let give it up for the day, i've been working on it for 8 hours. maybe take a look at it again this weekend, i dont HAVE to have the net until monday, but even then i can still use wifi until i get this sorted out.
ok, so it looks like just about everything is working now on my phone except internet explorer while connected to the AT&T wireless EDGE/3G connection. I can download the maps while connected to Windows Live GPS, i'm able to sign on and chat while using agile messenger, i can download emails on the go with my outlook mailbox.
The only thing that is giving me a problem still is internet explorer/opera mobile. Anytime i type in a page it says "locating...", "opening..." "0 KB" while using IE then it just stops there and doesn't load a thing, and when using opera is says no connection detected. Anybody know what this could be? I dont see anywhere in IE or opera where you can change browser settings as far as connectivity...
very similar problem
Hi,
I'm having a very similar problem. I have an HTC TYTN II unlocked. It has worked beautifully for a couple of months and suddenly PIE would not work. It says Connecting...Locating...Opening and then hangs in there for a while until it error outs with "the connection has been lost"
I'm on T-Mobile full internet plan. The ROM is original stock ROM (UK). Curiously, the "push" emails continues to work, but PIE does not. I can't login to Live messenger either.
I have reset the phone to factory settings to no avail. I have called T-Mobile and they say my account is okay.
Any idea? This is really weird.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
elkavayo, where are you located? I am having the same problem today & I am in south florida. I just got off the phone with a T-Mobile tech & he tried something and said it appeared to be a network problem - not a phone issue. Wi-fi is working fine.
weebo523
I'm located in South Florida too, Miami to be precise. Those were my thoughts initially, but I called T-Mobile and they told me that there were no outages or network problems. This has been happening to me since Wednesday 8:00 AM.
Additionally, I swap SIMs with a friend, who also have T-Mobile, and configured his phone (HTC Touch unlocked) to use T-Mo full internet and it worked on his phone with my account!
My wide and daughter (Dash and T-Mo SDA) can also connect to thye net normally with their phones, so I don't think it is the service. Mine doesn't work with neither full nor T-zones. It does work with Wi-Fi though.
The mystery continues... thanksfor sharing your story. Hopefully we'll find a "cure" soon. I've beenthinking about "upgrading" to 6.1.....
i have the same problem with an unlocked Tilt running on my Rogers network.
all my messaging apps work but not Internet Explorer.
I'm in Fort Lauderdale and just had the same problem .. I have TWO 8525's (TyTn) on T-Mobile and also a Wing with T-Mobile, whats weird, is that both 8525's are having the problem, whereas the Wing is working fine.
There is definately an issue right now with South Florida and t-mobile.
elkavayo & vr24, this is strange. It seems to be happening exclusively to the Tilt / TyTn & in South Florida with one Rogers. And it seems like very few of us have the problem. I am usually pretty good at trouble shooting but this has me stumped.
totally, I have tried tons of settings, everything I can come up with, used their Data Configurator, I've tried 3 different ROMs, including Win Mo 6.1, and even on the TyTn forum, people with the 8525 in other parts of the country aren't having the issue.
It's really messed up, and as I said, my Wing works fine, lol... but I want my TyTn as the wing is having other malfunctions. the only problem is, how can you argue it's the network when one phone works and the other doesn't. there is SOMETHING that changed on the network though that is not accepting something with the tytn, in just our area, lol.. obviously. Just no idea what it is.
vr24 - at least you saved me the trouble of trying different ROMs, which I was just about to do I did try going to a backup with no luck. Do you think that something could have gone bad in the phone that connects us through GPRS?
I guess I will have to sleep on this for now. Hope you or someone figures this out while I'm sleeping - VBG
Lol... don't count on me too much to figure this one out. It's quite the nightmare really. And it's a shame. I just purchased my 2 Hermes and was thrilled to have them and they were working, now I have very expensive bricks basically!!!
Anyways, help would be awesome to anyone out there willing to continue troubleshooting this.
Well I have some "good" news... I'll be heading from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles this coming Wednesday, if we don't get it sorted out by then, and this magically works on the West Coast, I'm jam t-mobiles balls into a vice grip until they fix it. I'm REAL curious to see if it makes any difference.

ATT Touch Pro Internet Sharing Connection Issue

Got myself an ATT Touch Pro. When using the Internet Sharing Application, with either USB or Bluetooth, I am getting an error. This is what is going on.
1. Open the Application.
2. Select either USB or Bluetooth.
3. Click on Connect.
4. Click Yes on the Enable the Device Dialogue.
5. Status shows as Device Setup finished.
6. Network activitiy shows in the Top tool bar.
7. Error message: Cannot Connect. The Remote party has ended this connection.
I can put the same SIM back in my Tilt and I am running great. Also downloaded URPREY-ICS from a different thread and installed it. But still having the isssue. Any help is appreciated.
It's AT&T's way of trying to force you to get a tethering plan. You need a registry editor, and maybe your phone unlocked, but mine worked without it.
Go to the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing\settings]
There will be a value ForceCellConnection it will be set to "AT&T ISP". Change it to "Media NET" without the "" and that should do it. You'll need to close and reopen internet sharing if you had it open while doing this.
Thanks so much! It worked!!!!
Internet Sharing on FUZE
All you really have to do is go into settings and select the ATT ISP... edit... instead of [email protected] change to WAP. This will connect the forced ATT ISP Setting to connect to wap.cingular... No need for a download or anything... I had mine working in a few seconds.
I am assuming it is against AT&T's TOS to tether without the plan, correct?
My question is... I pay for the unlimited data package... If I tethered for small amounts of data while traveling is it really noticeable? Is there any other way for them to tell?

they can't notice if the traffic is coming from a laptop or a phone but they can notice irregularities in the data consumption. Basically, if you use it for normal usage (web browsing, email, etc..) then you should be fine.

I've had unlimited data for over two years. I stream TV via orb from my home pc to my phone and laptop, browse the internet going to whatever site I please, etc. I've went over 5GB a few times, but normally stay in the 2-3 GB a month range. I've never heard anything. And not they can't tell. If it's against their TOS, they need to tell their reps in the store. When I got my blackjack two years ago, that's exactly what they told me to do. They said you don't need a plan other than unlimited to tether with this phone.

So did I. Because I already had a registry editor downloaded on my mem card and it worked fine on my new phone. A registry editor is a requirement IMHO, so it's well worth the download even if you don't use it for this.

Actually you are better off to just empty out the value.
This way, when you go to internet sharing you will get a second drop down asking you to select the connection.
I did this and it works greate. ( This is how the unlocked version of HTC Touch Pro has )

I hit around 5.8GB back in March. Didn't hear anything, so I assume no news is good news. They CAN do it however. Doubt full that they will unless you make it a habit. That was only my second or third time over 5GB in over 2 years and the most I have ever used in a month. Yay march madness!

I updated my Rom on both my Fuze and Tilt. Now internet sharing will not work any more. I get the remote refusal message. I went into the reg and I do not have the forceconnect value to delete. Any suggestions??

Try a custom ROM? I don't have that ROM to tell you what to change, but I would guess it is the connection internet sharing is using. Use media net and see if that helps. If not, custom rom! There's no good reason really to run a stock ROM unless you intend on using your phone the way AT&T wants you to.

Tmobile blocking tether now. Anyone else?

I'm running chromatic and as of 3 this morning tmobile is blocking my tether. Has this happened to anyone else yet? They want to upsell me to add tethering for 15 more a month and it still has the 5gb cap (Total BS) The built in wired tether and pdanet both aren't working, don't know about wifi tether yet but I'm assuming its blocked too. I found some posts by some g2 users this has happened to. Any one else? I'm glad im paying $30 for "unlimited" data. Aholes.
Thanks!
Sent from my Chromatic Dream using XDA App
Wireless tether aka wifi tether for rooted phones from code.google.com should still work. I've seen other reports of such blocks with market programs.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
They popped me last night. G1 rooted running wifi tether for root users and pdanet. This sucks REALLY bad.
im using tether now to be on xda and facebook. im in new mexico and the only message ive gotten from tmoblie was there were slowing my download speeds for hitting my cap with unlimited data plan lol.
I have a rooted G1, and I usually use wifi-tether or Barnacle. Tried PDANet as well.
I've received 8 text-messages from Tmobile regarding my tethering being blocked. Odd thing was, I was streaming pandora-radio on the phone during a long car drive (~5 hours) while these things beeped away at me. I had tethered earlier for a few minutes to check my gmail.
Later when I tried to tether to check my email, any http requests direct me to an upsell message. However, Remote-desktop still works, FTP still works, and most everything except plain webpages work. Tmobile is asking $15/mo for 200MB of data, with $0.10/MB overage charges ontop of your 10GB "unlimited" plan.
I'm unsure of how they detect tethering. It seems to be based off of bandwidth usage, as there's no way for them to discern whether this is phone traffic or laptop traffic. The other thing that could be a possible giveaway is the number of connections that are open. I'd imagine the laptop has a few things open for windows update, msn messenger and who knows what, whereas the phone has Browser and Lattitude.
Regardless, this is balls.
user agent string
If they are blocking web browser traffic, but not other TCP/IP services like FTP or remote desktop, there's a chance they are fingerprinting non-phone web requests by looking at the user agent string. An interesting test would be whether or not you're able to still make HTTPS-only requests with the web browser on your desktop or laptop. It would take some evil hackery for them to be able to retrieve the user agent string from an HTTPS request.
See 14.43 of the HTTP 1.1 spec for a description of the user agent string.
Got around it by setting up an openvpn on cyanogen 6.1.0. Even if im not using tethering, im still gonna use openvpn for my data traffic, as they are probably using deep packet inspection, which means we no longer have any privacy on tmobiles network.
Im thinking about changing the default port to 443 so as far as they are concerned, im just browsing ssl sites on my phone (port 443 is the default ssl port for web browsing and openvpn uses ssl for encryption).
If you use this method, just be sure to reset you dns to to googles (8.8.8.8) otherwise they can still tell whether or not your tethering based on my experience.
Im seriously considering switching to sprint as i would actually be willing to pay for their tethering, i get 4g in my area and i have a lot of respect for sprint for not capping their 4g.
Maybe if tmobile offered more bandwidth or other features for their 15 bucks a month I would actually be willing to pay for it, but i AM NOT paying for data that I allready paid for. Data is data to them, my cap isnt changing, why should i pay more to pipe my data to my computer.
Correct me if I'm wrong but tethering for $15 essentially removes the 5gb throttled cap. Its the same as Sprint and their $10 fee. The 200mb plan is just a lower tier.

last time I was working the tmobile call-center for T3DS (spring 2010), the cap was 10GB. Although, that was nearly a year ago now. Samson had a lil' checkbox for "throttled" that was enabled at 10GB. perhaps a year and a half ago, maybe two now, they had disabled tethering previousy system-wide. Although back then I had a Motorola Krzr with no data, so I really had no clue what was affected.
The $15 thing is to enable tethering. two days ago it was offering me something around 40-50 dollars for "unlimited" (atop the $30 i pay for unlimited data), and $15 for 200MB (atop of the $30 i play for unlimited data). Of course, you must have a data-plan already in place. Looking at it again today, the page is different. It presents me with a mini terms of service, a button to add this package to my plan to enable tethering. No mention or word of cost.
And, visiting my.tmobile.com like it suggests... there's nothing on the official Tmobile website that I can find for the tethering package.
So, being the typical t-mo customer that I am, I called up the 1-800 number to whine and complain. I mostly want these annoying text-messages to stop. The rep said he could add on the tethering package for me, but I declined. He also offered to hand this over to his buisness group to see if these messages are being sent out in error.
TLDR: If I have to pay $85/mo minimum for smartphone with tethering abilities, i'd rather just give Verizon a call.

Maybe if tmobile offered more bandwidth or other features for their 15 bucks a month I would actually be willing to pay for it, but i AM NOT paying for data that I allready paid for. Data is data to them, my cap isnt changing, why should i pay more to pipe my data to my computer.

I've never successfully set up openvpn before, could you assist with this? Or is there a guide you recommend for beginners?
work around
was cut off last night.
tried the "user agent switcher" plugin for firefox to see if they are blocking browsers rather than the tethering itself.
With limited testing, i found several agents that work. iphone 3.0 to name one... Now to figure a way to keep the web looking nice using these agents.
I just received my first text warning and was cut off immediately....the 5gig throttle was already a huge kick to my nuts...now they want me to pay to tether and still be under the same cap?! I hit 5gigs WITHOUT tether...I really don't know how tmo expects to keep any smartphone customers like this...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
The solution to this is very easy;
EVERYBODY needs to call up tmobile and tell them that you were NOT tethering, but changed the USER AGENT ON YOUR PHONE in order to make websites actually work since douchebag websites read that the user agent is for MOBILE and send you to their crippled mobile websites.

Well... You can call them all you like. Previously working for a tmobile call-center, I can assure you little will be done. If I received the call, I would be opening up samson and checking your usage history. The billing system logs just about every bit of data transfered, although I cant remember if it lists URL's anymore. I would suggest telling them that you were tethering, decline on the upsell offer of the tethering package because you feel your "unlimited data" package actually means unlimited, then you can also tell them that it is interfering with the phones operation by itself even when you arnt tethering, and request some sort of further troubleshooting/ticket creation.
If you say you arnt tethering, but DID tether, we could usually see judging by how many connections were initiated over a period of time... There's only so much an android phone can do at once. Regardless, as a data/tech rep, the next step would be filing a network trouble-ticket and putting in your information for an "engineer" to review over. Theres little (if not nothing) for the follow-up/callback process. At this point I would be telling you an engineer/tech would review over it, and try to end the call by up-selling you a newer phone.
TLDR: Unless things have changed in the past year, You will only talk to customer-care rep's, and have no chance of getting your concerns to those who have any power over these decisions. However if you do call in, please be polite and patient with the rep. I've called in and informed them that these are being erroneously generated, and they've taken the time to make a ticket for me. (they were, I got 8 of the damned things while listening to pandora on my phone)

Not for a single call, but if EVERYBODY called and complained about it, it WOULD be dealt with.

Go ahead and check the usage history. A smartphone is capable of generating EXACTLY the same data use as a tethered computer.

And that is EXACTLY what you do NOT want to do, because as soon as you do that, all discussion is over.

That might have been the case in years gone by, but no longer.

Huh? The limiting factor here is the NETWORK, not the hardware. It is TRIVIAL to open up dozens of connections for lots of different services on lots of different servers. Just because it is beyond YOU does not mean that **I** can't do it.

And once that request has been filed, you don't think that statistics will be run on the nature of the various requests? 200 thousand complaints about this nonsense knocking out normal phone data traffic, you don't think that would be noticed?

As I've said, numbers talk. I certainly don't advocate calling up and threatening anyone, but if the numbers are overwhelming, then corrective actions MUST be taken.
Please look at my post regarding T-mobile tethering
[/COLOR]I'm pretty sure I know what T-Mobile did.
