Hi all,
I stumbled across you guys while searching for a solution to a niggle I have with my new Diamond (more on that in a mo) & I'm chuffed having come across such a wealth of advice! I do feel like abit of a fraud though, as a developer I am not :/ Still, I've followed your tips for tweaking the Diamond, but I have just one little prob,
Here it is...
I'd like to access the music on last.fm but I can't. Is it possible or am I expecting too much from my device?
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help/ point me in the right direction <(^O^)>
Loz
Thanks. I've sorted it now.
I'm just wondering what you mean by 'access the music'. Do you mean listening to last.fm on your device, or just scrobbling your music? There's a Pocket Scrobbler for WM devices, and it supports the TouchFlo 3D audio player. See the group here:
http://www.last.fm/group/Pocket+Scrobbler
Hi,
Yep thats what I went for in the end. This my first pocket PC/ smart phone (whatever they're called) & I naively thought the browser would let me click on tracks to listen to them, as per a full blown browser
Still pocket scrobbler is a fantastic app! You'll already see me in the groups shout box
Thanks for looking maybe I'll see you round Last.fm.
Piscisvisio.
the other day i paid for and downloaded the nes emulator, i was playing around with it and realised that i couldnt play games really as i dont have a keyboard like the G1.
also with this problem, when playing cestos i cant talk as im playing from my HTC MAGIC and have no keyboard. do we no of any one that is going to be fixing these problems
thank you in advance
Hello,
From my experience (which is some what limited mind you, haha) ScummVM works very well with the HTC Magic. I have a Vodafone HTC Magic (black) and had Broken Sword 1 running perfectly. Obviously most other games will not work as well given the lack of hardware keyboard - but point and click adventure games are no problems with the touch screen/trackball! Also, the ScummVM app is free from the Market last time I checked.
Hope this helps!
It seems the magic requires a vitual keyboard. Also, as the magic is capacitive, that would mean that it's essentially multi touch capable (even if google haven't capitalized on it yet), so theoretically, it should be possible to get that virtual keyboard running with multiple buttons pressed at the same time. As far as I can see, the Sapphire(magic) is a rather new phone, so these things just take a little time to come from the developers.
Caid.

i belice in cestos you can chat by pressing menu->show keyboard

Yeah, it works. But some point and click, like broken sword 2, monkey island 3, need a right mouse click (inventory) to continue playing. Also no buttons to save the game.
So ScummVM is good, but with some games not. I hope they fix this soon.
There are a couple of experimental multi touch apps appearing in the market for use on rooted phones running certain firmwares. Hopefully we'll start seeing this being implemented into emulators soon. I'd be more than willing to pay £5 for a decent Megadrive emulator with multitouch control.
You never know, maybe we'll get official multi touch in Donut... or Eclair... maybe Flan? Please?!
There is a game boy/game boy colour app called kidd GBC. You have to pay for it but it uses an on screen keyboard (well an a and a b button that you press on screen) and you use the trackerball on the phone to move about. It works quite well and is one of the first emulators i've seen that has a basic on screen keypad implemented.
Finding games isn't easy tho.
The guys over at http://www.supergnes.com/index.php are working on the bomb snes emulater that will supposedly eventually support touchscree/multi-touch/trackball.
Theres a slew of myTouch 3G users coming down the pike, lets hope they start getting support.
ggNES is the BOSS! it allows u to set onscreen arrows and buttons, but i use volume up down for a b and the screen for the arrows cuz without multi touch its hard to put both on the screen.... hopefully donut should fix that!
Been using Nesoid for NES games and Gensoid for Megadrive games, both have on screen D-pads and you can map the buttons to correspond to A/B etc..
Works really well, really like it, tons and tons of roms out there. Been playing Altered Beast on the megadrive emulator and Mario and Zelda on the Nes one!
for the love of gawd, anyone, suggest a podcatcher that works!!!
glisten is trash, so is mediafly, should i pay for dogcatcher?
any other options? as someone said somewhere "why can't anyone get podcasts right on android?!"
if you find one, let me know. Listen is the best I've found right now but it's still pretty lousy. Mediafly used to be absolutely flawless, but that's been months and now it's just terrible. I've resorted to downloading them in Mediafly and then playing them in in a different program.
I havent found a good one either, the one I listen to you have to login, and it seems none support that.
It depends on what you want and how you want it to work. Some people prefer streaming. Others want it cached for listening later on. Some want to enter their favorite podcasts and be done with it. Others want a good database of podcasts with search facility.
I only listen to podcasts on my 3.5hr commute to work each Sunday afternoon, as I work out of state for most of the week. I listen to the same podcasts every week. For me, "Carcast" is ideal. It doesn't search for podcasts, only downloading what you set it up with. It also allows me to manually download my podcasts every Sunday morning for listening on the road.
I like the search that "listen" uses, but don't care for its integration with google reader. I like my newsfeeds to be separate from podcasts because I treat both differently.
If you just want streaming and a neat interface, try "Stitcher." It doesn't do what I want since it's streaming-only, but it looks good.
So yeah, it depends on how you listen to podcasts. I haven't found a single podcast client that could please everybody yet.
that's swell, i don't care about searching either and no way i'm giving them access to my google account, i know my podcasts and i just want a timely download and steady streaming with downloading along (like glisten)
i want it to remember where i stopped last time i listened and be able to control what stays in the list and what doesn't (unlike mediafly)
that's it!
oh and proper playback in the background, please

CarCast sounds like it would work for you, though its interface isn't as great as the others.

The really sad thing about Mediafly is that it USED to be sheer perfection. I could listen to a podcast, either downloaded or streamed, it would pick right back up right where I left off every single time no problem and it would keep my downloaded podcasts as long as I needed them. Then suddenly one day they changed something and it won't remember its spot and it deletes podcasts that I haven't even listened to even though I've told it to keep them all until I manually delete them. I think I'm going to dig around in some of my old APKs and see if I can find one of the first versions of it...
My advice is to just use a desktop podcatcher that will sync. Songbird is a good one, and Double Twist now does it. That way it'll look like a regular music file and you can just use any old music player app on the phone.
dPod
Use to go for beyond, was great, paid for, and now ... it sucks. Not capable to synchronize properly with reader anymore.
Just found a new option that look good, work well, is not perfect but free. dPod.
Give it a go, it's not bad at all

DoggCatcher supports authentication and is generally the best one out there in my opinion. I've used it since pretty much day one and it just keeps getting better and better. The dev is also very responsive and implements everything you ask as long as it's reasonable.
wanted to let you guys know that after last two back-to-back updates mediafly has been working quite good, i.e. it doesnt die when you switch to another app, episodes are pushed almost as soon as they become available and it even sometimes (rarely) remembers where your playback stopped last time, oh and i kinda dig their logo ...
Mediafly was updated today...looks like they might have fixed the resume problems...fingers crossed.
Release date: Friday, 2 April 2010
* Improved error handling on playback, including adding 'ding' messages.
* Resume playback now works
* Pausing with wired/bluetooth controls updates UI
* Streaming/playing video no longer creates entry in Download Manager
* Fewer Activity Not Responding messages on loading channels
I apologize for digging up this old(ish) thread, but I recently spent several days trying out as many different podcast apps as I could and wanted to share my findings. As background, probably 95% of my audio listening is to podcasts in my car, and maybe an occasional CD or Pandora stream. I have around a dozen that I listen to every week and a couple of these are daily shows. I have tried to use Mediafly in the past, since I paid for it, but found it increasingly more aggravating, even after the most recent update.
So here's my findings:
Useless: MyPod, Mediafly, Listen and Carcast
Potential: PodKast, BeyondPod and ACast
and the winner by a huge margin: DoggCatcher
It pretty much does everything I need. I knew after just using it for a day that I was not going to get a refund for it, even though it's most expensive app I've bought to date. The interface is a bit "busy" but once you get the hang of it, it really does make listening to multiple feeds very simple and worry-free. The only real downsides that I've found are that I don't think it streams over 3G (although it will over wifi), but that's not a huge deal, since it autosyncs without any kind of interaction on my part just fine and it's not cheap, but the dev seems to keep of top of things.
Ive tried just about all of the apps and I prefer beyondpod.
hi can someone send me the us version of podkast ?
i can't find it here in switzerland on the market.
[email protected]
guys, i'm back to glisten. it works almost flawlesly. couple hickups with app shutting down on loss of network but besides that all is good. and it's google, you know you can't say no.
I have DoggCatcher and I love it. It works better than anything I've tried and I never had any problems with any of my feeds not downloading. 5 Stars.
hello there, i just bought an X1 and was trying to find the best mp3 player. the ones i found on the phone were very slow. i have an 8 gb card with 1400 songs on it.
i need a player that doesn't have a delay between changing the songs and also a search function.
i found winamp for WM; i runs smoothly but i couldn't find the jump button.
any ideas ?
there are plenty...pocket player, imulator, s2p, lcg jukebox...
imo, pocket player is better choice, but it is not free
I also recommend Pocket Player by Conduits. Not free but the best player I have seen so far.
thanks man, i found pocket player, it's nice, but it's so slow . i'm having so many problems with this thingy, i can't even find the gps menu in settings
I dont consider Pocket Player slow. Its not lightning fast, ok. But slow?
Concerning gps setting: You will find them under settings\system\external gps
Another vote for Conduits Pocket Player. Not slow at all, slides and performs as expected. I had been a satisfied user for many years and had it running on all of my WM devices with no issues, and we are talking a far less spec-ed ones than Xperia. The best part for me is that it sends music over the bluetooth to a mono headset and with tweaks can be set up as a default media player for Voice Command, which means it gets controlled through bluetooth as well. Can't beat that.

With Pocket Player you can set up the interval between songs, even fading of one song into another.

I wonder if slowness is caused by your card read rates...
yeah, my card is probably slow, but this doesn't change the fact that pocket player has a not so nice search function. after you find the desired track, it replaces the playlist and you have to go back each and every time.
have you tried that winamp version for WM ? if i could find the "jump" button. it really looks like winamp and it's veeeery fast.
ps: i'm using the same micro sd on an n95 and it works like a charm, i'll try and update the x1 to 6.5; if i'm not satisfied with the results, i'll swap it for an n97.
It's a question of configuration. In advanced settings you can choose whether to generally replace the current playlist or to enqueue an opened file. What's more it is important to choose the correct method. If you want to replace the current playlist you choose open\open file but if you'd like to enqueue you have to use open\add file. It's the same in the library. When you press on an album, artist or track in the list a menu pops up and you can choose between play (replaces current playlist) or enqueue. In the library there are settings too. There you can once again choose between different ways the program interprets gestures/ actions. So all in all what you describe is a mere question of configuration and using the correct method
i've given up. i tried saving a playlist and it freezed my phone (twice). i don't care anymore.
now...this is WINDOWS mobile, right? on my p990 i had an emulator for old nintendo games (mortal kombat, street fighter etc); is there such thing?
what other games do you know? i saw a video, someone was playing tony hawk, i'm looking for something similar with good graphics and interesting gameplay, perhaps a football game, pool, bowling...
Perhaps... the problem is with your device.... I can't say I ever had any problems of any kind running Pocket Player, saving playlists, selecting songs, scrolling through lists etc, and I used it on quite a few WM devices so far. Can't even say the performance was ever affected by the ROM or specifications. It runs equally well on 200Mhz devices and 620Mhz devices, with 64Mb RAM and 256Mb. It even runs perfectly well on LG KS20 and that little bugger has many problems. I have it on my Xperia, needless to say.
FYI: I realise that you asked for a new media player, but I thought it was worth mentioning that both the X1s built-in meda players have a highly elegant quick search as you type feature.... just start typing..

if you have more than 1 song that starts with "mar" for example, it will only show you the first one
what's so elegant if it doesn't satisfy my needs? btw, where's the equalizer on these so sweet and neat "media" players? even with the players that have equalizer, the sound sucks in my car/headsets comparing to nokia.
i'm sorry to say this, i love ericsson, but i regret buying xperia.
Look it is clearly visible that you don't now how to use Pocket Player. You say: "This does not work, that is not possible". But everything you mentioned so far is possible with Pocket Player as long as you know how to use it.
Concerning your problem with playlists I cant confirm that the Xperia crashes when saving a playlist. Have you tried saving in another format?
If you don't like Pocket Player there are other solutions. Pocket Music by Pocketmind for example or Mortplayer. Both come with an equaliser but for me Pocket Player is by far the best program available.
AS for games you can get warcraft 2 and starcraft and heaps of other games.
hey, i have the best solution: throw away this crap and buy the goddamn ugly n97,
this morning i was trying to send an sms to a bunch of my friends and, surprise, i can't mark recipients, i have to select them 1 by 1. YEAH XPERIA ALL THE WAAAY
Look I found in 5 minutes by using the search function what you say is not possible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354164
Search also for the keyword "power sms" as this is another solution. Maybe there is even more software available here at XDA. Generally everything is possible with Windows Mobile because there is software for almost any function you can imagine. So please either start using your brain or stop annoying us with your false statements. I don't care if you believe Xperia X1 is crap and N97 is better but stop claiming things that are just plain wrong only because you are to lazy to look for a solution yourself.
for me nitrogen is the best mp3 player for winmo.
so i have to install a third party software to send a lousy sms? if i wanna send a message to 1 guy, i use it's default app and if i wanna send one to many, the other one. i can't believe this. yes, i'm slothful, that's why i bought a smartphone
oh, btw, sometimes, it doesn't show the number that's callin' me so i have to restart it...
i have nothing against xperia or WM, i'm just being objective here, but imagine if i would have had to pay for all these extra applications? imagine if i didn't know my way around technology. i would want my SMAAARTPHONE to do everything by default; and by everything, i mean the basics.
you guys know better than me that many 3rd party apps are ****ed up and buggy and laggy, and trust me, i had more than 10 symbian phones, i know what i'm talking about. so don't you dare jump on me with "use your brain, false statements". maybe i do have a cheap micro sd, but why does the old n95 work so smooth with it a?
altae, i dare you to show me a video of you using pocket player. i want you to load a playlist with at least a couple of hundred songs, i want you to have there songs that have the same title such as come(ing) undone by placebo, korn and robbie williams. search for "undone", let me see how it shows you all 3 songs and after you select one, the playlist goes on just like "good ol' winamp". if you can do that and i can't, i swear i'll hit myself as hard as i can with the x1 in the head, in my nuts or wherever you want me to.
Is there any way that at least music, Like Slacker or Music Player, can work in the background? I know that's what "not able to multitask" is, but this is a BIG downer for me. I like having Slacker or Pandora (HD2) running all day with my headphones in, but still be able to perform basic functions on the phone,
No unfortunately not at the moment. It will play with the phone background off but that is it. If you have to go to another program and then hit back it will resume/stream again.
Zune obviously plays in the background but so far not another player. I wonder when pandora will finally release the WP7.

I loved Pandora. But I would take any music program that would play in the background while still being able to text/surf the web like I used to on the HD2.
Small drawbacks to getting a brand spankin' new software. Gotta wait for these small things to hopefully change.
zune natively.does.that right now. I love zune and how on this phone its awesome. Signed up for a year pass. Can't beat it. Unlimited streaming of any song they have and 10 songs to keep forever is great.
Try zune if you are looking for a music player that will play while surfing, emailing etc.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking more into a free way of doing it like Pandora or Slacker, FM Radio ect (well as far as not pay for a membership to like Zune ect) I'd pay for an app.
Guess time will tell on what there chef's can do for the new windows...
I use Zune without a pass and I have transferred all my music and download all my podcasts and everything works a teat
CD (UK)
Yea, it's good for once you get your music on it, but I don't have a computer that I can use Zune. All my music is at work and i opnly have iTiunes, on a MAC, and can not download any programs.

I'm sure I read MS have loosened the controls on running apps in the background as long as it meets certain targets on battery usage, so it really depends if winmo gets enough mindshare for pandora etc to make an app for it
Yeh they did, I remember reading that spotify said they are making an app for WP7 and that it will run in the background
That would be reat. Sounds like they didn't allow it due to they didn't want the phone to run slow, and the performance going back to them? I'd rather my phone run a little slow to be able to at least multitask so music frm a free program such (slaker, pandora ect) can run in the background than hnave a super fast phone that i can only use one program at a time. For now, I'd be happy with just music running in the background. But I'm sure some apps could make use of this as well.
Wasn't this an iPhone problem at first (or current) too? Not the music, but multitasking in general?
I understand and appreciate the rationale behind the lack of multitask support for third-party apps in WP7, but I have already encountered two major inconvenient situations caused by it.
1. I can't run Messenger (which sucks for now) and browse the web or play games at the same time.
2. I'm playing a game half way, and I receive a text message. If I want to read and reply to the message, I'll have to reload the game all over again.
I do not know when or if Microsoft would support multitasking in an update, but I sure hope it will be soon. WP7 is such a sweet platform as far as development is concerned, yet the lack of third-party multitask support could be a dealbreaker for me.
