The radio is so erratic. Sometimes it is great. Othertimes it just can't get a connection. I haven't got my email all morning ... its realy annoying me!
typical issues- radio looses connection overnight - so I need to restart and its restored.
Going through a train tunnel the radio reception goes, but is then not connected the other side. Most of the times it works, but sometimes it just looses it!
I hope HTC get their finger out and release a new radio rom sharpish. Its really stopping me enjoying this otherwise brilliant device!
my radio is 3.43.25.19 and protocal is 61.20t.25.10U

Just saw Asia ROM update for Diamond 2 on Singapore site with Radio version: 3.44.25.27
I find the same. Most of the time the radio will reconnect fine, but just occasionally it'll sit there helplessly for a long time showing no network.
I did find under phone settings to only connect to my network rather than "automatic" speeds up the transition between 3G and GPRS and vice versa - it's now almost instantaneous, before it could take a minute or so. You probably already have it set like that?

no i don't, but I will try. thanks for the tip
also worth zeroing on the bands in your country. I have set up gsm 900+1800 and umts 900+2100
when we get hacked ROM I will just do gsm 900+1800 and umts 2100 which is correct for the UK
Its probably worth doing the above in any case, as it won't be seeking so much and therefore saving battery

Thanks, i'll try that too.
I havent' tried it on the train, but I think this really does work. I suddenly have reliable data in my office block
Complain to HTC
I complained to HTC earlier today about the reception. If enough people do it, they'll have to do something!!
This is what I received from HTC about the Radio. - Indifference!!!!!
Thanks for your email. I cannot comment on if we have had any more comtact regarding poor reception, as yours is only the second email i have seen from anyone saying they have a problem with reception. As you can imagine, 2 occurences does not constitue a known issue. However, If you could provide us with the IMEI or Serial number of your device and also the ROM and Radio version from settings> all settings> system> device information, we will be monitoring just in case we receive more emails. In the mean time, i think the best course of action would be to contact the retailer and ask for a replacement for what sounds like a faulty device. best regards, HTC Europe Support
I've put the network selection back on "auto" after a particularly bad case of the phone searching for and not finding my network despite being in a strong signal area with the network selection set to manual. It came up with the "select a network" box and wouldn't seemingly carry on without my intervention. Which is useless if the phone's in your pocket. The moment I changed the setting back to "automatic" it searched for and found my network.
I only had this problem after I forgot and left the data channel connection on. Usually I switch it off after using it. So perhaps this network loss / searching bug is related to leaving the data channel open? No consolation for those who need to do this.
I have now set the phone to use only the UK bands, and will see how this goes.
It really seems we are up against a) a weak radio module b) big bugs in the radio firmware.

what a **** workaround!
that was their response... a **** workaorund that degrades my service..
anyone else had this or any thoughts on it?
Don't switch to GSM, switch to AT&T!
I am not a fan-boy for any of the carriers, but I must say that over the years I have gotten excellent service from ATT - except for when they changed to Cingular, which was a collection of regional companies with regional problems and inability to service - IMHO - a truly mobile client (like I live on the East Coast, but kept a west coast cell number - Cingular couldn't understand or deal with that one)...and the coverage is now better than Verizon's (not to mention the phones and the fact that you can do high-speed data and a call at the same time).
Did T-Mob start pro-rating their release contracts yet?
Don't know.
Am in the uk so cannot get at and t..
boo!
yep, get the same issues, whereabouts are you? im in rainham, and have to turn off the 3g to get reliable incoming calls and make calls, dont have to go too far and it works ok!
romford / ilford seem to be ok with 3g switched on.
I'm in Ilford and when set to Auto band miss calls intermittently so can't use that setting reliably. I wondered if there was a way to set the phone to use only 3G so it doesn't keep trying to switch between 3G and GPRS?
I'm from Indonesia and discovered that sometimes when my network switches me to 3G automatically, I can't receive or make voice calls.
So, I went to phone -> menu -> options -> band -> select network type to GSM istead of AUTO or WCDMA
Unfortunately, I left the 3G coverage area before I had a chance to see if it made any difference

Same here, in central London - have been ranting about this for some time over at Modaco eg here. Not a clear answer apart from perhaps swapping the handset but its hit and miss
Its a really severe problem and I'm losing the plot a little with it. Gutted.
BTW, if you need a way to quickly switch between the two modes, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345524
There are about fifteen threads about this on here and on Modaco. Its a fact of life with 3g and HTC devices.
It is primarily down to relationship between the network cells and the device.
3G cells are notoriously unreliable and need a lot of maintenance - if you report a problem cell to your network, they may check it out - although they use their own testing to determine which cells need fixing.
Some devices do have weaker transceivers and hence the odd occasion where a device swap helps - but 99 times out of 100 its the network cell. And thus the reason that users find their device works fine on 3g in another location.
Hello All,
I have a problem with my kaiser, it started i think 2 weeks ago. I have vodafone (netherlands) with a data connection account (hsdpa). Now is the problem that i can't use umts (3g) or hspda. The only thing i can use is gprs. It looks like the modem or something is broken. But that is a kind of weird because (if i understand correctly) its al the same chip (wifi and so on). When i open internet explorer it begins to connect a gprs, 3g data connection. But it can't connect, than you can see a X by the synchronisation arrows (on the top of the screen). And after a few secconds it comes with a message that with the current settings there can't be a data connection. But if seen other messages as well ( the modem on the other side disconnected the connection) The weird thing is that i tried my sim card in my friends kaiser there it works fine, so it have to be my kaiser.
Ok what i tried:
I have a dutch htc kaiser (not vodafone branded or anything)
I use the latest dutty rom, but i tried the orriginal rom and different roms to see if the problem was the rom or something.
When i let the 3g mode on i can see that the phone finds a 3g connection (to call over umts).
Is there any program or tool or something so i can test the modem?
Or does anyone know a sollution for me, i will be very greatfull!!
Ok i tried a other radio to, maybe this was the problem. But it didn't, at this moment i have the default htc dutch rom (who was on the phone when i got it). I searched the net for the same problems, what i found was that this error could be happening when you have your wifi connection open, but i have wifi disabled. The phone is still receiving a 3G connection, but after a few secconds the 3G icon is gone and the failed synchronisation icon (two arrows with an X) is visible. than you can see that the phone is reconnecting. and then if i want to connect to the internet the same story as above is happening.
When i search internet i couldn't find an tool to test the chip/modem.
Because i have it spl unlocked i can't return it for rma, is it posible to restore the default spl?
Hi,
unfortunately I have the same problem with my Kaiser. I have an unbranded German version and it worked fine with all bands (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS(3G) and HSDPA) but since two weeks ago its only working with GPRS and EDGE mode. I have to change band-selection from AUTO to GSM in order to make or receive any calls.
I didn't do any ROM flashing, everything remains the same as the device was shipped.
I assume, that something is damaged but I have no idea how it could happen or how I can find out exactly what is causing the problem.
Since there is still warranty I'll return my Kaiser soon.
seems to be a widening problem
hi,
it seems many have the same issue, see my other posts for linkage to some other threads on it...no solution yet as far as I can tell.
rich
p.s. moderators any chance to link these threads and make a sticky?
ok, thanks for your reply. I've allready found another thread for that issue. But im still uncertain if its a bug in my device or a combination of a bug with a provider specific (Tmob Germany) problem or if its only the provider to blame for??
Chris
I have a slightly different problem. I don't have 3G in my area but only EDGE. Now the problem is that I cannot get speeds higher than about 80 kbs with EDGE.
Now when I put the same SIM in my Touch I can get speeds upto 200 kbs. So obviously this is not a problem of my service provider but rather something wrong with the device.
I have repeated the trial by swapping SIMs a number of times but with similar results all the time. Really don't know of a solution. Will appreciate any help.
haven't seen the edge problem
hi,
my edge speeds seem to vary more by location...I measure up to 200+kbs but have seen it go much lower too. there is a location where I can still get 3G working and i measured up to 1.7mbs for downloading! At my home location it is sporadic edge only and I can't even always get to speakeasy.com to test it, sometimes the speedtest says its not licensed..switching to wifi and it works. My guess is some needed ports are getting blocked by at&t at times..because sometimes it works. I brought all this up with at&t..they are taking some charges off this month and switched me to a cheaper plan too...so they at least seem to care even if they can't quite fix things yet.

I have this weird problem with data connections. I couldn't find anything simular to this on the forum.
My provider (vodafone NL) does supports umts & 3G, I got a full data subscription, and the area i'm in is fully covered.
Now if I go to Settings - Phone - Band there are 2 different settings you can tweak; 'Network Type' and 'GSM/UMTS Band'. Those are standard set to 'Auto'. With those settings my phone says it has 3G connection (above the indicator bars and an icon), but i can't make any calls or get any data from the network. sometimes it also says the server ended the connection, but it still remains connected.
If I set Network Type to GSM, I can make calls, but only connect trough gprs wich is waaaaay to slow for me.
Setting it to WCDMA won't give me a connection at all. Turning HSDPA on or of doesn't make any difference also.
I figured updating my ROM would fix this, but it didn't. I tried different roms.
Is this a known problem, and more important, is there a fix for this ? It is driving me crazy !!
little more info;
ROM version : dutty's WM6.1 WWE
Radio version : 1.64.08.21
Protocol version : 25.74.40.02H
HTC branded Tytn II
Any advice is very welcome !!
Thanks in advance
i keep mine on auto but use bandswitch to switch between edge and 3g or some people gprs to 3g,sounds like a proxy issue since u wouldnt make calls on the wrong band, gsm works for calls so that part must be right so it has to be your internet settings and/or proxy
I checked the (proxy) settings on the website of my provider, and it seems to be okay. Those are settings for gprs tough, but it seems to me it should work as well for umts. It are also the settings the device initialy chooses for my provider..
I was thinking, might a radio update do the trick...? I did read somewhere that has to do with connections..
not necessarily, radios are more so driver issues for hardware such as gps, bluetooth, wifi, keyboards and cameras. i highly doubt another radio could fix this one since i never came across this with any combo of rom and radio before
Well then I don't know anymore what to do. It is probably a hardware related problem so I'll have to make a phonecall to HTC.
Thanks for the advice dyetheskin !
If someone does have a solution... still happier to get it fixed myself !

I am having the same issue.
More wierd is that it used to work perfectly in the beginning and couple of days ago it started acting like this.
I called my mobile provider thinking it might be USIM problem, however it wasn't.
Now I also think it's a HW problem. Next week I'll take it to a lab and hopefully it will be an easy solution.
I called HTC Tech support 2 weeks ago, and they confirmed it was a hardware related problem. They had 2 simular cases before..
Well, at least they will repair it for free
Suddenly it had happened; NO 3G nor GPRS data transmission. I can see the 3G sign , but when I make calls the phone disconnects; when somebody call me, he received a message that my phone is off line. Only when 3G signal is on. But when normal GSM is on, everything will be OK. My phone can not get data from the internet, even though it shows that is is connected. I tried all of the above solutions to fix this problem but no helpand sometimes it shows 3g sign but as soon as i try to call some1 all the signals are gone.. I tried to hard reset and try it before installing any software, no help. I tried mostly all available ROMs and Radio ROMs; even the original, but not fixed. I do not what to do. Now, I am using the phone with GSM only, NO 3G. Please help!!!

Hi there nunu,
I had the same problem, went back to the store and nope not a known problem.... So I started to troubleshoot this
1. normal G connection
2. 3G appears or even H
3. signal lost and after 30 sec. the cycle starts again.
what worked for me was the changing the of the radio version. I am currently in the Netherlands and here the NEON_Radinly_1.65.24.36 works fine, I confirmed it by loading a rom with a different radio in it and the result was again the same.
hope this helped in any way...
Let me (us) know.

life is good, but life get's much better with a Kaiser
are you trying to connect with [email protected] / cingular1 ?
this is the kinda information you should have put in your first post
I use the above and have zero problems in Philadelphia
My 3G went out for like a day here (Phone only worked on Edge), then it started working again. Cellular carriers do have outages from time to time. Has it been a long while since it stopped working?

Flash to a different compatible radio. If you do not get 3G/H service back, then you have a hardware issue with your radio, and will need to have the phone serviced.
what newtwork are you on?
have you tried your sim in a different handset?
what happens when running in gsm only mode?
in settings phone network change selection to manual and tap find networks and reselect network (this is known as a manual roam) does this make a difference?
Same here!, im in montreal, canada with Rogers, and in 3g doesnt work, it detects the 3G network, but as soon as i try to make a call or go on the internet it looses the signal and i have to go on GSM mode.
and i'm using LKDV12 but i still had the same problem on AT&T Original rom, and Dual V2.
Anyone?
Major problem --
I have been travelling round the world for a year and have the same problem, Have tried many radios, if I use 3G( wscdma) or auto band then the signal drops everytime i try to make a call, and no data is possible however if I use gsm only data and voice work fine, thease symptoms are on many networks, Chile, Easter Island,Tahiti, NZ, Fiji, Optus ( OZ ), and m1 ( singapore ),
Radios tried
EMO 1.71.09.01
Neon 1.65.24.36
1.65.21.18 ( att )
I even loaded the generic dopod rom + radio and it didnt seem to help.
Is it possible something low level has changed whilst doing all this flashing ?
Or could the Hard SPL affect something.
I always try to buy a 3G USIM in each country and test the sim in a backup G800 to ensure the carrier has enabled 3g data okay.
Phone is Kaiser ( HTC TytnII )
ROM is varied but and usually lorentis series roms -- L26 12 light atm
Symptoms, 3G icon shows but data wont connect, if you try to call radio strength bar drops to zero and cell communications are lost , sometimes reestablishes comms but often needs soft reset to band switch to work.
If 3G icon not showing all calls and GPRS data works Okay.
Personally I would not expect this to be a hardware failiure as many others are experiencing teh same fault and for working hardware to fail in use is more erratic in the failiure mode, but a low level register, or some other type of protocol corruption could easiliy be the cause......
The proven "high GPS current consumption in standby" issue is also present as it seems to be on all Kaisers but afaik the root cause of this was never resolved either .....
my Kaiser do not work with 3G only works on GSM NEED HELP

i have the same problem did you make it work how you set a gsm band instead of the 3g on the phone tks for your assis
dr.vogel
I have the same problem. Already had it with WM6.0 original HTC ROM (Finnish ROM, but language set to English). Then sent it to service. It came back, they said they "reapplied software or smth" and it worked after that. Then after 6.1 update again, the same problem (even with the latest updated Radio ROM).
When I set band selection to auto, it picks up 3G or even H but tends to loose it and definetly looses connection to network if I try to make a call. Can't take any incoming calls either.
It works ok when I force it to use GSM (EDGE for data) on Band selection tab, in phone properties.
I probably won't bother taking it to service anymore cause there is no local service here in Estonia, they ship it to Finland and it will take a minimum of 3 weeks...
... so I'm waiting for Xperia X1 and hope it's not as much HTC.

Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335074
Hardware problem, repair needed and unavoidable to get 3G functionality back.
I have the same problem.
I bought an O2 Stellar (Kaiser) from a work colleague and it worked fine on 3G/Auto on the day I bought it.
The next morning, when I switched on the phone, it had exactly the symptoms described (i.e. it would only work if forced into GSM mode).
My colleague took it back to O2 under warranty.
1 week later, it was returned as 'fixed', but it actually still had the problem, so my colleague returned it again to O2.
Another week later, O2 provided a replacement unit under warranty.
The replacement worked fine, until the next morning when I turned on the phone and had to force it into GSM mode again because it wouldn't work in 3G/Auto mode.
I'm on 3 in the UK and I suspect the problem is something to do with the roaming onto Orange GSM which happens when there is no 3G signal from 3UK. However, on the day each of the units worked, it was switching between 3G and GSM repeatedly because the 3G signal is fairly poor in my office.
I'm now waiting for my colleague to return from his holiday so that he can return this unit to O2 and we'll see if we get another replacement. If we do, I'm very reluctant to actually use it - I think I'll probably just sell it on and get something different. Shame because I really like the Kaiser.
as mentioned before, another thing that you should've tried is to call the helpline and see if there's an outage in your area. I've been experiencing the same problem in a very particular area (3G hand-off to EDGE problem only happens on campus). Tried different radios and problem still exist, so I gave them a call today and turned out that there is an outage here.
In my case, it's not caused by a network outage - 3G works fine on my Hermes in the same locations.
Good thought though.
Relax boys...I have'd the same problem... The only solution is to go with your phone for warranty return. There they will change your TyTN II mother board and all will be ok. IT IS THE ONLY WAY.
PS do the same thing I did http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418375
i post this thead and the solution
i post this tread an the solution came on tha answer of various of you great ideas i get the solution changing the rom and the wm to 6.1 and the rom is the dutty's it has worked almost perfectly in any wy itested only some install on the gps progrms but no mayor problem tks all you friens for a great support
The same thing has happened to me as well (Orange UK).
Initially I thought that it was an outage in my area as my friends had problems connecting to 3G as well, but their problem has been fixed but I still cannot.
I'll be contacting their tech support dept. later today and I'll post back.
Hi all,
I've got the following problem with my XDA Diamond (O2 Germany).
- To establish a connection, first the 3G connection is enabled. After the 3G connection is up, it switches to HSDPA ("H" icon).
- Now everything works fine, no latencies and fine transfer speed.
- After a certain idle time (surfing...), the H disappears again and is exchanged by the 3G.
- When I try to download data again, it switches back to "H".
=> Then, huge latencies occur (up to 1 min. before data are received), the connection speed slows down dramatically or no more data is received at all.
I first thought of issues with my ROM (Bepe 0.99) or my RadioROM (.05). But after flashing to Aztor V7 and RadioROM .08, I'm afraid I have hardware troubles as the problem persists.
Now my questions: Did anybody here have the same problem? If yes, could you fix it? If yes, how? ;-)
Would be nice if you could help me. It would be really annoying to RMA the device...
Thanks for your help in advance!
Regards,
eypostel
That could be because you device disconnected from the net (thus it switched from H to 3G), and it take time for it to reconnect to the net.
Thanks for your hint, but I think this behaviour is not normal...
Even the connection cold start (establishing 3G connection, then switch to HSDPA) is faster and before, the connection was working fine:
When in 3G mode the connection was required, the icon changed to "H" within one second, and the data transfer started immediately.
Now, it takes about ~30 s before the first life sign, and then data reception is not even guaranteed.

eypostel

Thx prodigy7, this topic exactly describes my problem...
I have a question regarding this HSDPA idle bug. Turning off HSDPA should bring relief, but my MDA Compact IV does not have the HSDPA-switch. Can anybody have a look in their registry which values are changed when HSDPA is switched off on an XDA or HTC device?
It is easy, simply save a copy of the registry with PHM RegEditor before and after the change. Then compare both files with a file comparison editor (PSPad or TotalCommander for desktop PCs does the job).
This is so ridiculous... I have bought a HSDPA-device (Touch Pro) because I wanted to use HSDPA a lot... and it doesn't work at all... this was my first and last HTC device... I have invested 600€ for a piece of crap.
The Diamond does HSDPA just great, however your service provider must support it. In the UK T-Mobile supports it on their Web 'n' walk Plus and Max services. If you have normal web 'n' walk you can see the H and connect using HSDPA but its throttled.
Nothing to do with the device, just the service provider. It also depends on coverage. For example, when at home I get a H with 2 bars. When driving to work I loose that and get 3G and then eventually just G. Because my provider doesnt have HSDPA coverage where I work.
To turn HSDPA on and off easily use a cooked rom, i use Duttys. Very close to the original and tweaked just a little.
Did you read the german thread linked above? I guess not because what you wrote is wrong.
It is correct that the problem only exists if you use htc devices in the O2-HSDPA-Network. But: the problem only exists with HTC-devices in the O2-network. I am able to use any other (non-HTC) phone that supports HSDPA with the same sim-card successfully in the O2-network. And I am also able to surf using HSDPA with my HSPDA-Surfstick in the O2-HSDPA-Network. This means: the problem is not the network, it is the device (=HTC).

If it was that simple then none of us would be able to use HSDPA on our TD, but most of us can. I can use it on my TD on Orange in the UK and other networks including O2 when I am roaming in Europe and, for that matter South Africa (not sure about Germany). So the problems probably lies with the interaction between them, rather than solely the "fault" of one or other.
Seriously, sometimes people can be a bit absurd. 3G & HSDPA are standardized communication protocols. This means that there can be little (no?) device-to-device OR network-to-network variation with regards to the integral working of 3G. The context and application might vary and impact performance, though. For instance if a device is not supplying enough power to its 3G chip, signal acquisition might be slow and strength weak.

I highly doubt the existence of a bug limited to a single network and device brand. By the way the Qualcom chipsets (which incl. the 'radio chip') are not specific to HTC and many companies (incl. Kyocera, Motorola, Sharp, Sanyo, LG and Samsung) feature them. The specific Diamond Qualcomm chipset (MSM720xA) also features in the G1, Xperia, Motorola Atilla & Alexander, LG Incite and MANY others.

I seriously doubt that. To prove this, you would need to test EVERY single 3G phone that has ever existed with the network. Which is, quite frankly, impossible.
Like I mentioned earlier (ct. 1st paragraph) context and application might influence performance. Maybe you're just not in an area with sufficient coverage, maybe your specific device has a design flaw or malfunction. Whatever the problem is, I'm pretty damn sure that it's not "HTC-devices don't work on O2".
I use the german o2 internet pack L and I have the same problem. Seems to be an o2 issue.

That is a much more feasible scenario. Any other O2 users have this problem?
I totally agree with H3x. You say the problem is only HTC devices on O2 so therefore its a device problem. but surely as the problem only exists on O2 its an O2 problem? Every other network in the world seems to be fine. Did you test any other devices with your SIM and network or are you just reading whats on the internet and taking it as true. As we all know, the interwebs is never wrong.
But, your obviously not happy with your diamond so throw it away, go and buy a nokia.

Seems like the HTC-homies in this forum are not willing to read what I wrote before and keep asking the same stuff again and again. I mean, I wrote in the previous linked post all details that you are asking again here...
I'm outta here and will keep at the german forums where people are not constantly trying to convince me that I am stupid...

You're right of course. The bug mentioned here is not limited to a single brand nor a single network. But it seems to be limited to specific Qualcomm chipsets. According to numerous reports in German user boards all (?) devices using MSM7501A (HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro), MSM7200A (SE Xperia X1) and MSM7201A (HTC Touch HD) have trouble reconnecting from HSDPA-idle in German O2 network. Doing some research on the web I found similar reports from Swiss Orange users.
From my experience as a German O2 user: An idle HSDPA connection switches back from "H" to "3G" after 25 seconds. If you then send a new request, e.g. tapping a link in your browser, the connection indicator of your device changes to "H" again, but most of the time the connection hang up. You have to manually disconnect and reconnect... Switching off HSDPA/HSUPA gives you a stable 3G connect, however limited to basic 3G speed. Another workaround is to frequently ping around, a 10 to 15 second intervall does the job. With pushmail or some IM messenger active it may work, too.
That's my experience with the SE Xperia. And it's definitely not a local network issue nor temporary - I'm using a Palm Treo pro, too, without any problems at all. AFAIK the Palm also is a HTC device running on a Qualcomm chipset, the MSM7201 without an "A".
