There is a new version of google maps in the marketplace for download. Title pretty much says it all. Here are some screenshots. Map mode no longer has street view. You have to put in an actual address to see its streetview, takes some getting used to. Or you can longpress the screen to bring up an address, then select streetview. Looks like there is also voice search. I'm currently on CM3.4, I would suspect it should work on all builds.
EDIT: New version 3.1.1 available in the market!
A little review by android community's Vincent Nguyen:
http://androidcommunity.com/android...voice-search-and-transit-directions-20090616/
Google Maps for Android is now even better than before, thanks to new features and a few fixed issues with Google Latitude. You can now search Google Maps for Android simply by speaking your query and Google Maps will search it for you. Google’s voice recognition engine currently understands English in American, Australian and British accents. Other notable features, once you find what you’re looking for, include store hours, prices, ratings, and reviews.
When traveling to San Francisco or New York City, I do a lot of walking and/or take public transportation. Up until now, mapping out walking directions or transit for Google Maps for Android was sorely missing. Thanks to the updates, these two features are available in over 250 cities, including NYC and San Francisco.
Google also improved Google Latitude by fixing an issue that caused background location updates to periodically stop for some users. So now, once you select “Detect your location” from the Latitude privacy menu, your location will continue to update as long as your Android phone is on. There’s also a new experimental feature called Updates that lets you connect with your friends and post messages. To test out this new feature, start Latitude and click the “Updates” tab to broadcast your updates.

I don't get it, why is this released through the market and not as a system update? Have you tried pushing it over top the system/app version?

Why do a system (or even patch) update for the maps (a single program), when its not updating the system? Yes, it automatically replaces the default maps you have on your android. So pushing it over the top would be pointless (when you can just install from the market), and adb install would give a parsing error because it is an updated version of the same program compiled by Google. There's no harm in installing. If you want to switch back, just backup your current maps apk (don't ask, just do a search for it, its everywhere), and reinstall at a later time.
Those who were relying on the Maps Compass (activated from Spare Parts app) should think twice about installing this updated Maps. Spare Parts can't install Compass in it. However, this new Maps does have a movement-detecting direction arrow. If you start moving while your GPS is on it will average out your direction of travel.
The presence of public transit routing is handy, especially if you live in a highly urbanized area.
Official Google Mobile Blog's post about upgraded Maps:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/06/search-by-voice-and-transit-directions.html
Today we're releasing an upgrade to Google Maps for Android-powered phones. We've added a whole host of new features and fixed a few issues with Google Latitude.
You can now search Google Maps for Android using your voice, making it easier than ever to look up places while on the go. Whether you're searching for an address, a business, or nearby windsurfing spots, just speak your query and Google Maps will find it. Our voice recognition engine currently understands English in American, Australian, and British accents. After you search, you'll see a map of places. To help you decide where to go, we've improved our business listings to include content such as store hours, prices, ratings, and reviews.
We also added transit and walking directions to Google Maps for Android. You can now get directions using public transportation in over 250 cities, including New York City and San Francisco. If you're looking for the best route on foot, use walking directions to take advantage of pedestrian-only pathways and to avoid one-way restrictions - just in time for summer!
Google Maps for Android includes some big improvements to Google Latitude. We fixed an issue that caused background location updates to periodically stop for some of you. Now, once you select "Detect your location" from the Latitude privacy menu, your location will continue to update as long as your phone is on.
You may also notice a new experimental feature called Updates that lets you communicate with friends and post messages. Start Latitude and click the "Updates" tab to shout out updates at friends when they're at interesting locations, start a conversation when you're at your favorite restaurant, or just add more details to your Latitude location for your friends to see. Your friends will also need to download this new version of Google Maps for Android in order to use this experimental Updates feature -- they will not get your messages otherwise.
Unlike past Android software updates for the T-Mobile G1 or HTC Magic, the new Google Maps release won't be automatically pushed to your phone over the next few days. Instead, the upgrade is available for download in the Android Market. Just search for "Google Maps" and install today.

It installs in data/app, while the older version stays in system/app. If you don't like it you can uninstall it and enjoy the older one. Replacing something in system/app requires root access so it wouldn't be possible for many users. If you wipe your phone, you will have to install it again.
I'm running Haykuros Hero rom, when I download the app it fails say package not signed correctly, but from reading the comments on the market it must be signed right because other a using it on they're devices just fine. does anyone know how to fix this or can post the 3.1.0 apk?
Anyone getting "low memory" when using traffic (takes about 20 seconds to show that; initially shows traffic - then stops showing traffic after warning)

You can type this into the terminal, or adb shell it (- the su command)

I've been waiting on this version. Had it on my BB then switched to the G1 and missed it like crazy. The public transportation time scheduled it right on point living in NYC.

Must be a memory leak... As I watch the "About" option with traffic on it's gone from 1024/4488 free memory down to 512/4488 in 2 mins... doesn't look very optimized; may be trying to load an entire regions traffic.. here in LA that's A LOT of data.

Name: TA Maps
TechAutos Maps v2 is an updated version of one of the first jailbroken apps for WP7 and is now available on the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.
TA Maps is a mapping solution that uses sources like Google Maps and OpenStreetMap and gives better coverage in many parts of the world than Bing Maps.
For more information, screenshots, etc., see http://www.techautos.com/apps/tamaps.
Marketplace link: TA Maps
Features
Scrollable/zoomable maps
GPS location tracking
Search, driving directions
Maps: Google street/satellite/terrain/bicycle/China, OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap
Layers: Google traffic, transit
Favorite locations
Driving mode (keeps map centered on GPS location)
GPS sensitivity settings
Smoothly restores your last map view and pushpins
The next update (v2.3) will focus on an improved points-of-interest database.
Known Issues
The app sometimes encounters a bug in the WP7 map control- currently working with MS support on a workaround, but in the meanwhile, to get rid of the error, tap the bottom menu, then “clear map.”
Google Maps does not provide search data for Israel, North Korea, Cyprus, Guyana, Kiribati, Maldives, Malta, Palau, Suriname, and Vanuata, so search is quite limited there. Will try to address this by adding other search data sources in a coming update.
Releases
v0.1 - first release, for unlocked phones - just Google Maps + GPS
v2.0.1 - added address search, new map types, new map sources, pushpins, favorite locations, driving mode; now on marketplace
v2.1 - fixed search bug for non-dot-decimal locales, fixed search box focus issue, improved map error handling, added driving mode indication
v2.2 - added driving directions, zoom buttons, new map types (terrain, bike, OSM, Google China, OpenCycleMap), Google map layers (traffic, transit), prevent screen lock option, pushpin popups, share pin info by email; added trial version; expanded pushpin options; fixed local search bug
The free version, meant for developer unlocked phones, provides Google street maps and GPS tracking. It is available to download from this post, or from here:

No, it doesn't integrate with Google accounts-- at the moment, it's basically Google map data + GPS tracking + bits to make it all work smoothly.
I hope that there will be aerial view in the future
Can't wait the moment Google sends a C&D. He's using the Bing maps control. Unless he figured out how to make the credentials code work to authenticate with Google using one of their API keys, he's breaking their ToS.

I just found out the phone re-locked itself without the chevron tool. I was not aware of this, and thought my phone was hosed somehow. I just re-unlocked it now, everything is fine
Good job, amb9800! Tried and works fine. I'd like to suggest: could you please add offline map browsing + map caching mode to your roadmap. 16 Gb microSD is much cheaper than unlimited 3G dataplan
Hey mate, nice work !
Could you think about coding latitude for that too? As a plugin? Thats the only thing i miss on my windows phone is it possible to bring that one into? it would be lovely if you could add it to your To Do list
Update- worked on the app tonight, got basic address search running. Hopefully will get a chance in the next few days to implement the UI for it.
@gcmobile: Added aerial view to the roadmap.
@Deadwalk: I'll look into Latitude once the other features are done (it'd be easy to implement if we could go in for the straight API route on that, but unfortunately not).
@sensboston: Cached map data is most likely possible, though it might take up a lot of storage space (as it'd be saving an image for each map tile location/zoom level). Will look into how to best implement it.
Thanx for the arial update. I will update and try it then
Today i ve synced my phone via zune after long time. After done it my phone was re-locked and the message shown "Microsoft has revoked..." on all my installed dev apps. Pushed always the Back-Button and didnt deinstalled the dev-apps.
Unlocked my phone again, and all is same as before

When I first began my researches for new smartphone, I think I read MS2 came with a Motonav Demo. I've just got mine but cant find it. Can't find on Android Market either and Motorola Shop don't even show any app (is there something wrong or they haven't launched it on Brazil yet?)
I saw some posts in other forums showing the path (containing a download link) to install it but not sure if I can trust and if it will work on froyo. Anybody?
MotoNav was included in Milestone 1. Milestone 2 has google navigation by default.

Understand. The big difference is that Google Navigation doesn't have offline maps. Or is there anyway to get offlines maps for it?
Sent from my A953 using XDA App
Yes, google nav is far from perfect I'm not sure if motonav is available for standalone purchase, but there are few others offline nav apps for android. ATM I can remember copilot and navigon. Copilot looks and works nice, but I've heared people complaining about maps being a bit outdated and not precise in some areas. At least in Poland, other countries may have better support. I can't say anything useful about navigon: I looked it up and I didn't like it's interface and graphics, so I've chosen copilot.
Find out that Google Maps 5.0 can work offline using its cache. Just need to navigate trough the map within certain zoom while you still have a connection (such as Wifi).
Some other interesting improvents, too.

for offline navigation try use IGO, is a good gps navigator
you can find it at 'black market' or buy it on IGO SHOP for android
i recomend
Google's navigation caches routes before you take them (in the previous version there was a setting to allow it to do this on 3G, but I'm not sure if it's still there). It also stashes away all the stuff it's downloaded before in case you need to go there again. It uses vector graphics rather than tile based stuff too, which means you get a certain amount of available zoom without downloading any more data...works pretty well.
That said, if you need completely offline navigation, there are several programs from GPS vendors available...
I recommend google maps 5
does google maps 5 has been released?
I just downloaded "google map 5" apk but I'm not sure about it cuz the feature is not like whats described in the video.
In google maps 5 it's true that I can tilting and rotating with finger control, the maps loading time also fast but in my "google maps 5" the zoom level is not as big as in the video and there's no 3D building (I searched bryant park in google maps 5, I found it, but it was totally different with what it is look like between in my MS2 and the video trailer)
my question is: do I downloaded the right apk?

your motorola should come standard with google maps 5. however, if it doesnt, you can get it from the marketplace for free. there is however a new version of google maps, which is 5.3. according to the post, it should be available from the market place. however if you cant locate it, there are links to download the apk and then install it.

I've downloaded it and it's still the same.
I still can't see 3d building (in new york) and the zoom level of map terrain cannot reach the level I want.

is it because google maps 5 still in beta version or what?

if you do have the latest version, im not quite sure why you cant see buildings in 3D. i dont seem to have a problem seeing buildings in 3d in new york.
however about you not being to search for google maps on the market place, i had the exact same problem. apparently the reason behind it is because google does not distribute applications in Malaysia and Indonesia and many other countries. therefore, the only other way to work around it will be to root your phone in order to obtain google maps and other such software. as soon as i locate the relevant link ill edit this post with it.
EDIT: here is the post i was looking for. its a similar question i asked some time back and this is the answer i got:
I also from M'sia, but i able to update it by doing some tricks.
U can't update directly if u are from Malaysia because currently M'sia still not in the Market List that fully distributing all applications. This link will provide you with that list:

Thank God I've rooted my phone several days before.
so I installed market enabler and choose to fake my network as verizon.
and it's like magic..I searched "map" in android market then from out of nowhere suddenly google maps showed up at the first row (that's amazing)
then I choose google map and it says "open" rather than "update". It indicates that my maps is in the same version (5.3) with the one in android market.
Then I decide to uninstall update and reinstall it from android market.
It's work, now I can see 3D building on my maps (I like the moment when the buildings growing up from the ground, it's cool)
thank you agent008my now my maps become more colorful

Now (still on the Gear) go to the Android Settings menu (only available on the null_07+ roms) and go to Developer Options
In the Developer Options menu enalbe Allow mock locations
Launch BlueGPS4Droid: select Choose Bluetooth GPS and connect to your phone. Then start the GPS (enable Start/Stop GPS)
( Launch Google Maps: et voila... there you are little blue dot (provided you have a fix on your phone with ExtGPS) )

I tested more GPS bluetooth servers and GPS bluetooth providers on the Gear and Note, but these two apps seem to be the only apps that work.
Note
You need of course a working internet connection on the Gear to download maps for the map or navigation app you're using. The Null_ rom supports Bluetooth tethering for this (go check it out). If your provider has blocked BT tethering on your phone use a third party app. PDANet+ works great. Search the forum how to make it work. This will also work on other roms.
If you don't have a internet connection working just mess around and try to transfer offline maps from your phone to the gear. (Don't know how, but it should be possible for some apps. Just try)

Should be no problem. Should work the same as on your phone. You can even download some offline maps in Google Maps. Gear has plenty of room for that. We only have an additional working GPS now via Bluetooth.
Thinking out of the square ! Love it bravo.. Great work.
i already tried gps tethering apps, and none of them worked. this one works flawlessly. i just wish there was a way to incorporate this into custom rom out of the box, so we dont have to install anything.
either way, few days ago i tried sygic from play store. it's unable to download files from google play once you start the app, so i copied the files from my phone to it. i used to get a black screen and then the app was closing. maybe i can try older version or something.
btw - i really recommend caching your area map. works so much smoother then.
just make sure the area you want to cache is visible, and then type into search box OK MAPS.

Try playing around with the gapps of CM. Look in the zip. Copy the files to the appropriate locations. Maybe you should install the play services from the play store too. Eventually Google Login should work
Let us know!

Does anyone have a copy of the Maps.apk that is currently working for them? When I try to install the one I pull from the Play Store I get:
failure: [INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK]

i'm using the one from play store and it work just fine..
however there is one annoying thing - i can't get it to work so that it shows navigation in the direction i'm actually heading to. it stays on always-to-north and 3d north. any ideas? i know it lacks compass but it's not necesarry to display navigation differently..
How did you install? I wonder if I have a bad dload cuz I get a parse error when I try to install via dropbox.

any thoughts?
So after updating to 5.1, I'm finding Trusted Places isn't working in Smart Lock. Prior to this update it worked fine, although refused to recognize my Home and Work locations, forcing me to add them manually as new addresses. But now it actually shows my Home perfectly in a new, better interface, but no amount of turning my phone off and on, rebooting, or confirming my location with Google Maps will get it to not lock itself when I turn off the screen.
Now initially it would also crash Google Play Services when I'd go into the Trusted Devices screen or tap on my Home address, so then I updated to the latest Play Services and restarted. That seemed to resolve that, but it's since resulted in still usually crashing when it tries to pull my home address. I finally disabled Home, then added it manually, like I had to do int he past. It accepted it, but unlike in the past, it still won't work. Phone locks when I power it off, despite sitting right in the epicenter of that feature.
Anyone else seeing this? Anyone else manage to resolve this?
I haven't upgraded, but trusted places stopped working for me yesterday. I think it might have something to do with google play services.
Still on 5.0.1 myself and I ended up just turning the locking off because it was screwing up so much. So not sure it's a 5.1 thing.
Sent from my Nexus 6
Trusted places not working here either. Still on 5.0.1 stock. This just started two days ago.
Trusted Places was working fine on 5.0.1. After upgrading to 5.1 I have the following happening
Trusted Places through Google Maps (Home, Work) Do not work
Trusted Places Manually added do work
Same here. Sideloaded OTA yesterday and TP fails. If you revert Play Services back to 6+ (5.1 takes it to 7+) it works fine, so a Google Play Services issue.
Also for me, I have a pin to start the phone. IT used to boot to the pin then stop there forever until you entered the pin. Now, it continues to booth "through" the pin screen and will take you to the (locked) main home screen. When you swipe up to unlock, the phone hangs and has to be hard rebooted - every time. They only way past this is to immediately enter your unlock pin when it first appears during the boot process, before the full system is up.
this happened to me as well but not from 5.1 from the Google Play Services update. And yes it seems to be more of a problem with your Google Maps places vs custom set ones. A temp fix i found was to turn it off and back on (along with trusted agents) but it doesn't stick forever.

+1 Thanks! This got it working. I turned off the previous place and added new and all good.
My trusted places seem to be working after the 5.1 upgrade, BUT it only seems to want to automatically pull my home address now. It used to allow me to use home and work. I can't seem to get work to show up unless I manually add it. I think my OCD is just bothering me about it more than anything.
5.1 on AT&T.
Both the built-in (Home, Work) and custome locations are failing for me.
Mine works better than it did on 5.01.
Update:
4 hours later and stopped working again.
Another play services update is coming out. Can't tell if it works yet. Still only gives the option for home.

I was having this same problem myself and I have finally fixed it. For me, it looks like it may be caused by street names in the smart lock address mismatching with what Google Maps has. In Google Maps my street name changed from two words to one (from River Creek to Rivercreek) and once I updated my Home location in the "My Places" section of Google Maps the smart lock worked for that location correctly. When I did all of this I was running Google Play Services 6.7.74. I just upgraded to 7.0.96 and the smart lock function has stuck (although it didn't seem to stick initially after the upgrade until after I manually went to Maps and pressed the location target).
I have no idea why my street name was changed from two words to one in Google Maps. I listed a complaint with Google. I am wondering if they somehow knew the name of my home street changed before I did. Google knows best I suppose.
Mine works, then doesn't, all without leaving my house. Borked.
Nexus 6
I have the same issue on my Nexus 5 with 5.1.
Trusted devices and trusted faces do work.
Trusted places do not work, even adding an address manually.

Trusted places are based on Location Service objects like longitude and latitude. Not labels (names). You can pick any spot on the map. They don't work in 5.1 with Google Play Services 6.5 or 7.0 (as of 7.0.96).
Before testing make sure any Trusted Devices are off.
Waze on twitter mentioned, "Android Auto is on the way". No plans for Apple CarPlay.

I just tweeted Waze asking when we can expect Waze to be compatibly with Android Auto. Awaiting a response.
I've never used waze, but how will that functionality be different from what is already offered with Google maps?

Search youtube for videos regarding Waze.
For a short explanation: Waze is a crowdsourced mapping solution. Users that are actively navigating via the Waze navigation input road conditions, pot hole locations, debri in the roadway, road closures, traffic jams, traffic accidents, construction areas, and where police are located. This notifies other Waze users who are going through the same area of the aforementioned conditions ahead. After a few users pass through the area and do not see the tagged item, they simply let the app know that it is no longer there, and it gets cleared from the map. So it is constantly updated and fairly accurate.
City road contruction actually has been known to use waze to locate pot holes that need to be repaired around the cities.
It will be Android Auto's main killer app.
Oh sounds awesome! Does Google maps already pull in waze data and this functionality will allow users to update it or will waze be a standalone navigation app?

Waze is standalone.
However, some data is cross referenced with google maps. The only thing I've seen cross over is traffic accidents. Google bought out Waze not too long ago.
Within google maps it will actually show that it was inputted through Waze.

Google bought Waze years ago!
I would love to see Waze on AA. But with big buttons to easily tap while stuck in traffic. They better not say they won't for the driver safety reasons. The whole idea of Waze is for the driver to submit notifications while driving

I'd expect it to be integrated with voice commands. That way you wouldn't have to tap anything to report road conditions.

This could be the method of integration with Android Auto then. And Maps can be pickier about not showing distracting info or offering methods of inputting data.
Is there some setting required ?
I can't see any Waze stuff in Maps, on Nexus 9 with Android N dev preview or on One M8 with MM GPE.

Instead of Waze + WHAT ? I don't understand.
If Maps is not installed, AA will attempt to install it, and refuse to run if it is not installed.

Not a good idea. Waze's interactivity and user-generated reports are far more accurate and more interactive than what Google Maps currently offers. I would rather run the Waze program as a standalone. Not sure what Google's approach for it is considering they have to either pick between one or the other or having to put in resources to bring Waze to the AA market and maintain both at the same time.
There's still no updates from the development team regarding bringing Waze to AA other than "it's coming." Only time will tell.
I'm afraid this will never happen.
At beginning I was very excited about AA. There are (still) many issues/bugs and I'm running a Nexus device + OEM head unit. No hack anything standard and it's still not stable.
Second point is AA is very proprietary and closed and limited. Google wants you to use Maps and nothing else. Devs can only brings apps to messaging and media. Moreover AA apps have to be deployed through playstore. As a result you only find very few AA apps in the playstore.
Now I think that a basic mirroring solution would be a better. choice. Mirrorlink already exists but is not widely deployed (Nexus devices don't support this).

What will never happen? Google owns Waze, doubt they would say it's coming for AA and then not actually do so..granted vendors say things and not deliver, but I suspect that Waze, which is an ideal AA app, is definitely on AA's roadmap.
So I don't think we will ever see Waze on our head units. I think Waze really wants to go to AA but Google has to agree with that. Google has to open more AA APIs for Waze. So the decision is up to Google not just Waze. I really hope I'm wrong.

I'm really hoping for some news on new APIs for developers for use with Android Auto at Google I/O, allowing for more 3rd party apps.
