I downloaded Babble, a free app which resembled the facebook app which i saw in development which looked very promising, good UI, not great, could be punched up a little bit, i think it might be a beta though. I didnt see a fb chat portion of the program or the ability to view pictures, but hopefully on a final version there should be something
Hi,
I'm the developer of Babble. The application is very beta right now, I just wanted to hear some input from people who download this first version. More features will be included once I am sure they work as expected.
The ability to view photos is actually present in the version on the market. Just long press on a wall post and under the person's name you have the option to view albums or view photos of that person.
One thing that's coming soon is notifications - new messages, new pokes, new friend requests, replies to your comments etc. Also coming some time later: tagging photos, uploading photos to albums other than the default one, creating and viewing events and groups. I'm also working on optimising the wall to be a bit faster, but it's not easy with all the photos in there.
Chat cannot be included in this application, unfortunately, at least until Facebook releases an open API for that.
What makes Babble different from the other Android Facebook apps out there is that it uses the official Facebook APIs and abides by the Facebook Terms and Conditions for application developers. This means that my app never gets to see your login and password - hence the difficult login mechanism on first install. Sorry guys, that's how facebook wants it, I can't and won't make any hacks to bypass it, I want the app to make it to Facebook Application Directory one day so I have to play by the rules.
I hope I'll be able to deliver the best Facebook mobile experience to everyone, just give the app some time to mature But I think it's even useable as it is right now!
It's working pretty well right now for beta, what I noticed straight away was it took awhile to post a status change on facebook its self after posting on the phone. Also it's hard to tell if it actually posted or not from the phone. It could be a bit more UI friendly but for the most part for beta its running well. Can't wait to see where this app goes.
The posting is a bit slow, but honestly I can live eith it.
One request. Please make notifications opitional. I really dont need my email and this app going bonkers on a reply. My wifes phone goes off all day and honestly its kind of annoying. I dont personally need notications, but i tolerate the email ones.
You can turn all the email ones off in the settings of facebook thats what I do
Thanks for the app, its already a good app in its beta state! I'm looking forward to the faster wall.
thanks again
Anyone else have the issue when they click "see all friends" it just loads and loads?
See all friends is a bit slow to load right now, that will be taken care of soon.
By the way, since this is XDA-dev I imagine lots of you have access to logcat, so if the application ever crashes on you with a Force Close (which it doesn't ever do when I'm using it, but who knows...) please paste the error trace here. thanks !
Its really simple right now, but its great at what it does have. Great to get status updates and all the replies to them.
Nice app. I can't wait to see where you take this!
Ps. to the guy talking about the friends never loading, my loaded just fine even over an edge network.
For now this is excellent, great job avesik.
are Babble and FBabble the same thing?
fbabble has chat.
To be precise: fbabble is only facebook chat,
babble is (will be) everything else but chat
Thanks. Using Babble, don't need chat. I have AIM for that
Looking good so far. We need a good facebook app that doesn't just wrap the mobile facebook
the app is quite good actually but its a bit slow (while loading) hope that it could speed up abit
good job man, i love the app, i just havent sat down to go through the program, wouldve done it yesterday, but i had to perform major surgery on my xbox 360, had to fix my RROD, but overall its great. It would be pretty sweet if chat could be integrated, im using fbabble, but its got some bugs to be worked out, and facebook chat just seems to be the redheaded stepchild of chat programs
A new version is out, no new features this time, but thanks to some optimizations it should run faster and take up less memory!
I ll be be glad if the next version has notifications
damn admob, i really hate that stuff >.<
good app otherwise

which apps so far have disappointed you?
For me so far its Opera Mini, Meebo, and Palringo
Opera Mini was just a direct port with little tweaking for the Android OS
Meebo just needs a few more bugs fixed and a few UI improvements and more settings, even without the last 2 it'd be great if it simply kept you signed in.
And Palringo is in the same boat as Meebo.
What about you?
i personally cant believe there are so many different fart apps.. even paid ones..
but as far as things ive tried that have disappointed me, meebo was a disappoint with the logging off.. it logs off and locks up as much as the actual aim im prog that came on the phone..
theres also been a couple of games that ive opened and they were just garbage, i cant remember any of them atm except battleship though
I have the same complaints about Skype as you do about Opera Mini. Skype Lite can't make free skype-to-skype calls and there is no integration with Android OS whatsoever. So if I want to see if I have received any new messages, I have to switch to the app and check it manually.
Also the game called eggs was disappointing. The beginning was good, but the author completely ignored users' comments.
My BackUp Pro was also a waste of money. I thought it did more than just copy apk files to SD card and zip it.
I just was disappointed with the introduction of paid apps. As much as I love many of the apps I have paid for, it destroyed the market. There are now thousands of horrible apps, and apps that once were free that now cost money.
Many apps deserved support and donations, but not forced. Apps like Power Manager. Works great, and I would have no problem donating to them, but to turn their app into a trial, forcing people to update to their now paid version is just wrong. Android was all about Open Source, helping fellow users. When a dev puts hours, days, weeks, even months into developing an app, most certainly should he be rewarded for his efforts. Charging $5 for a fart soundboard is ridiculous. The dev couldn't have spent more than 5 minutes on it and expects users to pay for a joke of an app.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. I was hoping paid apps will give more incentive for developers to create good stuff, but instead all it did was make free apps paid.

I have to agree with you on that one... I just played it on Iphone and it's light years ahead of Androids version. It has sound, pause/resume option. It really bugs me when dev. puts out a game and doesn't bother to port it properly, even for a game as simple as that one.
I am also very disappointed in the apps that used to be completely free and now have been turned into trials and demos.
So far... the only app I don't regret paying for is BetterCut, everything else was junk.
Remote (RDP client) disappointed me so much, it continues to have connection issues.
Opera Mini was pure crap, I can't see why Opera didn't make an effort to port (truly) Opera Mobile instead. I might have paid for that if it was any good. Now I just wait for Fennec to be ported.
Barcode scanner for non-QR codes is disappointing. Other scanners, like SnapTell, can do so much more. All Barcode scanner can do is look it up on Google. I can do that myself by typing in the numbers below the barcode. The QR code reader is the only reason I keep that program.
FBook is disappointing. The interface has been mangled and it's more focused on uploading pictures than it is giving users the full Facebook experience. It's little more than a web-view portal for Mobile Facebook, and sometimes slower than using the browser.

Maybe you would like to try this usage: I'm developing an free online service to log purchases and see statistics. Also, I've implemented a shopping list feature I use all the time (my girlfriend too). The goal is to integrate it with Barcorama and use the barcodes to quickly log the purchases, e.g. right after returning from the supermarket.
So perhaps you want to start logging stuff with costpad.com
sorry for the offtopic post...

Mybackup Pro also backs up AK Notepad, your call logs, your system settings, text messages, and something else I'm forgetting.
I don't use it to back up apps at all, just data.

YEAH - it's great to backup & restore call logs, MMS, SMS's and phone setting and homepages (although the widgets for some reason does not load during recovery!)
But before I forget. You cannot save a backup filename that contains the character '-' ...How weird is that?
When I contacted the app-dev, this was the response:
"These characters are not allwed due to file system"
On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, i wrote:

Weird huh? I think it's a lazy dev!
I find it hard to be disappointed by free apps, but of the apps I've paid for the biggest disappointment has been the Mediafly app. When I first downloaded this app, I used the free version regularly and daily to subscribe and listen to all my favorite podcasts. I used it so much that I decided to purchase the app and within a week the app was completely broken.
It still downloads podcasts fine, but it makes it impossible to actually listen to the downloaded files. The streaming only works about half the time. It won't resume playing a file in the middle (I was once amazed at how I could resume playing a streaming podcast flawlessly upon initial release - no more; it doesn't resume anything now.) It will seemingly randomly delete podcasts that I haven't even listened to for no reason, even though I have it set to never delete anything. Bottom line, what was once the perfect app is now junk.
The official Facebook app for Android is now available in the market. Looks a pretty solid release. Loving the widget.
A lot of people, at least in Sweden is reporting it to crash at startup. I'm running latest MoDaCo ROM.
How come application is released by katana-something. How do one actually know this application is an officially one?

Okay chanced language for the os from danish to english and now it works just fine
seems slow and laggy and has less options than a mobile site :/
Developers email: [email protected]
About as official as a 419 scammer purporting to be from the IMF with an email address like [email protected], with an offer of a share of a few million quid!

Alright... Somebody should change the thread title
Yes and no. It IS the "official" Facebook app, and most certainly must have been developed WITH Facebook. Actually, even the iPhone app development page said it was not developed by Facebook up until v. 3 (I think). --And it definitely was. They just gave credit initially to the FB employee who had done the coding. The story behind this app is that Google "lent" FB an Android dev to create this app.
The Palm, Blackberry, and other "official" FB apps also say they were not made by Facebook. Click "mobile" on your computer at the bottom of the screen and check them all out. FB does this for some reason. Also, any previous apps that have been developed have been forced to remove the word "Facebook" from their names. Bloo was originally called something different, and he was forced to change the name. This is why we have "Babbler", "Bloo", "Fbook", etc. You know every one of those devs would have preferred to name their apps "Facebook". I have no doubt this app is developed officially in conjunction with Facebook.

Works fine for me! No crash on modaco 2.0
Yeh, as Switchbitch said, it IS the official Facebook app, but it was NOT created by Facebook, but rather, in association with Facebook.
And in regards to crashing - working perfectly fine here on MCR 2.1e.
MCR 2.2 Here. No crashing, and every bit as cool as the iPhone app from what I can tell.
iPhone version is obviously going to be a lot more feature-filled and stable (seeing as they're already at version 3.x) but I can picture the Android one improving over time.
The app is the same one shown in the leaked images a few weeks back and when installed and used the 1st time you must accept the facebook terms and conditions.
Does not crash for me at all, is pretty fast however i have noticed that i seem to get notifications from babbler way before this app notifies me about anything.
From reading about the app previously you would have known that it wasnt going to be as advanced as the iPhone app and wouldnt have access to items such as your inbox.
This app is based entirely on the new stream system that facebook usues.
On a side note, does anyone know how to skin the widget and the notification icons?
which one is the "official" one?
i can see quite a few out there like facebook lite, mobile facebook etc etc
This is rubbish. You can see people's walls and your own, but no access to your inbox for private messaging...?
And how do you update your status rather than just post to your... "wall". I think the problem is that Facebook has changed since i used it last and I don't understand it!
They released a version this morning that didn`t work. Force quit during startup.
Around lunchtime they released an update. Now everything is work as it should. Pure joy!
So, it seems status updates now go straight to the wall rather than being seperate. and are archived to your wall. Then the news feed gets everyones comments and status updates. You can also post on someones wall if you wish, as well as commenting directly on thier status. I get it. I think
Well, it's missing friend search, and messaging.
Battery life
Has anyone else noticed this chewing through the battery? Since installing this I've been watching the percent left drop on a frequent basis. I've got it set to update every hour.
EDIT
Forget that, it was just me being paranoid. Fully charged the phone last night, unhooked it from the mains this morning at 7am and currently power is sitting at a very respectable 99%.
ok so this might be the wrong thread and if so the mods will move it but my question is what do the nexus one users or even the android users think is the best twitter app? i used to use twidroid and it was great but i havent used it since the switch to "twydroid" and used tweetcaster as well for not very long. i used touteir probably the longest and then switched to the official twitter for android. so i wanted to know what people like the best and for what reasons so the people who are confused as me can choose easier. thanks
It would help if you spelled "twidroyd" right.
I'm not really active twitter user but its great to read the latest news.
I used seesmic, touiteur, tweetcaster, twitter but i'm using touiteur(paid for more accounts) and that was the one i liked. It looks really slick and it works as it's supposed. the notification is also different and nice.
The only thing I loved about touteir was that you can change the colors of it.
I only use touituer as it looks the nicest UI, and I also use the official Twitter app for its system notifications and its integration into contacts app and the OS.
Twigee is the best twitter app for me.
Twicca for me
I like Seesmic because it has a widget that's dark (I like dark themed widgets).
As for the application, they're all pretty much the same and I've used seesmic, twidroid, tweetcaster, twicca and twitter for android.
Twicca is nice but the widget doesn't show tweet previews. If it did I'd probably switch from Seesmic.
+1 for Twicca. I've tried most of them, and found this one the best. It has a great UI IMHO.
Only thing missing for me is multiple accounts. Certainly worth trying out nonetheless.
Good recent comparison here
I'd say Twitter for Android is the most stable, since Seesmic crashed on me when it was doing a couple of things at once, i.e. geotagging my post and uploading a picture.
Haven't used Tweetcaster though.
Sent from my Nexus One
i LOVE tweetcaster and Touteir. these are the two apps i use the most! its hard for me to choose which one to use so since i bought both, i find myself switching between apps every so often. i uninstall one n install the other. or ill just have them both on
Still looking for a new twitter app
For the longest time I just used SMS (on WinMo), then when I moved to android, I used SMS and Peep since it came bundled with my EVO. Well, I started really using twitter, so now I follow tons of people/bloggers/news. i set up lists to differentiate the streams. Way back int he day I had a desktop app that let me separate/make lists to keep streams separate. Is there something like that on android? I was thinking that swipe left or right could go through the different lists I have made, but I haven't come across an app that claims to do anything with lists. Currently I am testing out twitdroyd as well as Peep, but it doesn't seem that it doesn't anything substantially different. I know it has a pro version, and if it does what I want I wouldn't mind buying it, but it just has a vague "list management" feature, and the free version is "list viewing". List viewing is not as integrated as I would hope.
Any ideas or recommendations?
one thing twitter for android has thats awesome. the twitpics show on your profile instead of having to click the link.
I like Seesmic since I have to use two accounts so for multiple accounts I would choose Seesmic.
If you only need one account then I would say probably the official Twitter client.
Twicca is quite nice as well. Refer to the link to help you decide that was posted earlier. A good comparison by Engadget.

Here's another new version.
Turned on hardware acceleration.
Fixed some of the initial setup issues.
Fixed issue when using a Wifi XOOM with the web service.
Fixed some misc infrequent crashes
Removed some unecessary debug code
Known issues
Colors still don't work
If you choose a google account, and have never provided permission before, a loading dialog will not show up. This has been a ***** to fix because the emulator is dog slow and I have to wipe everytime I try to test.
---------------------------
As promised here's a new release. quickjotter-android2.apk is the new one. I left the old one on there in case you don't like the permissions for the new one.
It has a few performance improvements. There is now an editor in the main view, so you can still use the syncing without having the always visible sticky. I've also added a syncing component, just choose a google account when the app first runs to use that account.
http://quickjotter.appspot.com for the web interface. Log in with whatever account you choose when you first run the app. Syncing to your XOOM is done via C2DM, so it does not poll and should impact battery life minimally.
Please uninstall the old version before installing this one.
Some notes...
I've had some testing troubles since I can't figure out how to wipe out the permissions to access a Google Account without removing it, which is a total pain in the ass. So it's quite possible this version will crash right off the bat. I apologize if it does. Hopefully I'll be able to test a first use aspect more this week before it goes public. Please let me know any oddities related to account permissions.
The colors don't work yet.
The account selection is very rough, press it once and wait a few seconds it should go away. If you hit the back button it will likely screw up. This is my priority to fix this coming week.

Hi guys,
I started working on a proof of concept for a sticky note app for the XOOM.
Right now there's one note, it's the only note. Swipe inward over the bar to bring up the note. You can't move the note.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please don't distribute it.
-mike dg
This looks neat. I'll give it a try.
For what its worth, my home screen began to run really rough after installing this and having the service run in the background. But its a very handy app. Looking forward to further developements.
Hmmm. Perhaps it's due to the transparency. I'll look into it.
Hopefully this weekend I'll have a new version up.
Some editing and UI improvements. Some performance improvements as well, since I remove some bad debug cod. Also push synching between your device and the web. So you can get stuff off of or put it onto your XOOM.
Awesome idea, I have to agree there is some pretty heavy slow down post installation.
Going to remove the semi transparentness of the bar. Any objections or suggestions? The sticky note will remain semi transparent.
Yay for new version.
Couldn't open the apk..
Just me? Hmm.
this is great! Thank you Thank you Thank you
Hi guys,
I should have a new release in the next few days. Mainly bug fixes. I'll possibly work on getting colors working or at least removing that toolbar if they don't work.
Any thoughts on the current version. Stability issues? Has anyone used the website?

The app is great! The only thing I suggest is nothing that will make the app more functional, but rather aesthetically pleasing IMO. Can you capitalize the "new" and "hide" buttons?
also possibly making the hidden bar a bit skinnier?
Thanks for the suggestions. I have no sense of style, so most of my apps are ugly as hell, but I hope they are usable.

haha, you are too humble..just keep making updates! =)
so any updates on this? Another suggestion is the ability to access the settings menu from the note. Like have a new, hide and settings button
Going to be a delay of a few days until the next version. Just swapped my XOOM for a wifi one, and that caused a handful of issues.
Also noticed some peculiarities with the website data. Anyone out there want to tell me if the web syncing has been working?
Any updates?
Just because you asked I'll put the current Work in Progress later today. It's pretty stable except for a wonky initial sign in if you pick a Google Account, you will see no loading screen for a few seconds.
Ok latest version updated. Next on the agenda is adding the location setting to the note and making the "bar" much more eye pleasing and less intrusive.
So, there have been a ton of complaints about the facebook app on windows phone 8. Am I missing something? Why would anyone put an app on thier WP8 phone, when the People Hub ties all that together? I don't even have a facebook app installed, because everything I need to do is done from the hub.I can post an update, check in, see my notifications, whats new specific to my stuff or my friends that I have grouped exclusive.
So what am I missing?
Nothing. Some people are not used to having working things out of the box, so they just download apps to replace what the system already does.
My point exactly. I would even go much more further, I would ban all FB, Twitter... apps from the market since they r not needed at all. Instead, I would want some RDP apps for free, also some good database apps etc...
Good! I thought it was just me! Thanks guys.

There is quite some functionality in the Apps though that is not available in the Hub. It's conversation views in Twitter or Groups in Facebook. If you use those Features you can't rely on the People Hub alone.

Groups in facebook? Isn't that the same as Groups in the stock app? I don't do twitter, so cant answer to that. But still have found more functionality as well as easier interface when using the stock app on the phone.
I think OP has to look at things way wider. Maybe you just treat your phone more personal...
1)Facebook app can allow me lend my friend/families the phone and he can have a quick look at his facebook. (more social)
2)Facebook allow me to take control of another account I own( not saying about pages though, not sure WP8 facebook app can allow users to manage the page we owned)
3)respond to friend request.
4)As for myself, I have subscribe to many funny pages and news ones, the endless timeline give me look at what I have missed unlike the facebook/twitter integration,it does limits certain number of news/tweets and we can't scroll down after that.
I think these are the things you missing, might be more when compare to facebook apps on other platform since facebook app on wp has lesser feature.

Yea, my friends are goofballs. If I let them have access to my phone, I get crazy posts on FB, and my profile picture suddenly changes to a crotch picture. So, no one gets to screw with my phone except the better half (and now Jr thanks to Kids Corner). But then again, I do the same to them!
And I don't have more than 1 facebook account, but I see where you can add accounts, so maybe someone who has two accounts can try to add an account under thier different one? Might allow it, although, I think it would merge the two, which could become confusing.
And I have not noticed friend requests, so will have to see if I get one recently and see how that works.
I see where your coming from, guess since I am not a power user I don't utilize all the capabilities that FB has, nor the native / 3rd party app.
Thanks for clarifying, FINALLY some one did! Thanks!
Groups are not the same as WP Groups (well, something similar exists with the lists Feature but that's an entirely different Topic).
Facebook Groups can have members and have there own pin wall, calendar, etc. You can use them e.g. to bundle all the Information on a certain Topic like e.g. when you are part of a certain Club. To my knowledge I can't Access those from the People Hub.
I'm only using two of them but those pretty frequentlly. There are other Features not used by everyone but rather important to others that are not available in the People Hub.
Thanks for the info!

It's missing a lot of the interaction you'd get from the website or a third-party app, for instance:
The messaging app does not pick up Facebook message threads, for one (Just chats).
You can't edit your own status updates.
You can't friend/unfriend people.
The Facebook People Hub is meant more for getting the basic info on people that you have on your contacts list and to keep them in the loop on you. That's it. I think these limitations are by design.
