First off, let me start by saying that I DO NOT condone piracy in any form or fashion. However when I read the story below, my blood pressure shot through the roof. They are strictly trying to prove a point here, and if I didn't know better, I would swear the story was false. They are trying to make an example out of a housewife that downloaded 24 songs. What are your thoughts?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_tec_music_downloading
agreed the lawyers are just greedy. it is scary that there is such a big penalty for something that most people I know do regularly.
Of course they are trying to make a point. As much as you hate all the " music idiots " living in their million dollar " cribs " and driving expensive cars and acting like total A-holes, they do have a marketable talent, that makes loads of money. Piracy is a billion dollar business. Did anyone really think the music industry was going to stand by and shrug off internet " shoplifting " from their stores.
I am a writer, and if my work , which I get paid a living wage for, got repeatedly stolen and shared for free, costing me millions of dollars a year, you can bet I would want someone made an example of.
The " software police " do it all the time. That is one of the major ways of getting back at the company that just fired/laid you off, turn in the IT dept for buying that copy of Vista and then sharing it with 100 other computers, instead of buying 100 licenses. US businesses get fined millions and millions every year.
" She is only a housewife, and it was only 24 songs " Do the math 24 songs = $24 dollars , bet she wishes she had obeyed the law now. The bottom line is, the RIAA tried to settle with her, and she thought that she could use her " I am only a poor housewife " defense in court and the court of public opinion, to get away with her theivery. How is that working out for you ? She could have settled for a $2000 fine like others did but she didn't.
As much as we all hate the music industry, you wouldn't want the night cleaning crew going into your desk at the office and stealing that project you just spent the last 4 months working on, and sharing it with all your competitors , leaving you with nothing and neither does the record industry.
My wife was implying that I might be a little hypocritical the other day when I was chastizing my kids for having limewire on their computers. Since last month I upgraded the five Macs we have to OSX Leopard, that was until I dug out the reciept for the the Family Pack OSX with five user licenses.
So this woman gets charged $80,000 per song for downloading illegally, while Donte Stallworth can run someone down and get a week in jail???
Our legal system is seriously ****ed.
Agree this is the most Ridiculous! Hope they appeal all the way to the Surpreme court the next 2 years...
WTF???
80.000 for a song, but you can buy it for 0.99$, please.
this is the most ridiculous Judgement i've ever heard of

well that woman doesn't look like she had the 2000 usd to pay, also it could have been good that she wouldn't settle for it, if the court had decided in her favour, to show others they should not give in to such blackmail either.
I hope this gets appealed and sorted. this can't go on like this forever. the thread title is correct
PS: I've never downloaded music myself but it is not because I'm a saint (I'm not).

I just noticed this one. well if I was a writer (maybe one day ), and was earning this much (if an amount that is worth millions of dollars gets shared it means your work is very successful) I might just live on happily with the remaining millions. but it is a bit hard to imagine as I'm not in such a situation (i.e. earning this load of money) right now.

denco i agree with what you say, well mostly, but you have to understand when people realise they dont have to follow the ruyles they wont
but i tink its important to have a moral code when i comes to piracy
now before i explain again i do not condone it, im not telling you its clever or cool.
i think piracy on a small scale is fine within boundaries. for instance, i live 50 miles from a cinema that sgow actual films instead crap so if i want to see a movie its not just the admission price or the gas i have to pay its at least £20 on bus or trainfare and that before i get my snackage. i see this as very uneconomical. so i reason im just one person, i dont see anything wrong with downloading a movie especially since ill buy it on dvd anyway
however, any app thats made for pocket pcs i would never pirate due to respect for the creators, and i know how much work goes into the app made.
that may seem a bit hypcritical becuase hard work goes into movies aswell but its not justifiable
basically the new star trek movie is going to make just under 400 million at the box office, so then i dont see anything wrong with having a look now and then buying it mon dvd anyway but for instance i know certain app makers who make app and they spend a lot of time on them and the money will actually make a diference to the development
all in all i like to deal with piracy on a "Cross that bridge when its come to it"
Seriously weak.
This is from my musician point of view: music is for everybody who would like to hear it, you can't put a price on the joy and emotion of music, that someone downloads your songs means that they like your music, and that is way more important then to catch a few bucks if someone buys your stuff.
Stupid music industry, trying to make money out of something all people need.
Money Money Money we still need moar money right?
They are just another maffia.
WTH???
Fined $80.000 for a song cause of downloading illegally??
Well, it's OK to fined someone because of piracy, but $80.000 ??
I can live my life for 20 years (maybe more) with that money...
Most of these musicians wouldn't be as rich as they are if their fans didn't make them what they are today. They are being greedy. END OF STORY. Then on top of that, they are now wanting to "Tax" radio stations everytime they play of their songs... Guess who the front runners are on that?? U2 and Metallica. The same ones that whine about it everytime they don't get paid a royalty, also probably some of the richest musicians in the world.

I have been searching the forum trying to find a good software to watch TV with. I want to add a little more to my device and try to watch episodes that I cant normally watch while I'm at work.
What are some good softwares I can use to watch TV with? I found Sling and looking up another called "Orb". I have no experience with either. Can someone educate me if you have experience?
Are there more out there that I have not ran across?
Thanks in advance!
orb is excellent, check it out ! (but make sure you are on an unlimited dataplan, and you have 3g in your area.
I do have an unlimited dataplan but I dont have 3g (not in area yet)?
Will 3g make any difference?
Thanks for the reply!!

a huge difference mate, GPRS is around 50 Kbps ( a tiny grainy postage stamp for a pic and mono sound)
3G starts at 384 Kbps and maxes out a 1200 Kbps on the athena and means full screen decent quality pics and stereo sound !!
PS since upgrading to Ap 4.0 I am having a problem with this, it works but the video (windows media video) is very stop start, where as on AP 2.0 I got fluid full motion video in TCPMP
Makes since. Well I can only wait until Tmobile get 3G hopefully soon! I have been struggling with TCPMP and Windows Media since the upgrade to AP4.

if you dont mind my asking, where are you ? here in the uk Tmob have fairly good 3g coverage
I'm in Minnesota over in the US. I have read talks about Tmo getting 3G but I called yesterday after i read your post and they said they have plans to launch it this year. But he didnt know when.
i also read that in other states they already have it up. A little confused if that was accurate information or not!
Thanks for asking!
Makes me want to move to the UK!
trust me, you dont wish you live here, the only reason we have 3G coverage is that in comparison to the US, it is cheap to set up here, as the country is so small and densely populated, did you know that London is only around 30 miles across but home to around 7 million people, This pressure on land makes housing cost stupid amounts here.
plus we pay around $9.85 for a US Gallon (3.79 litres) of diesel
OMG I cant believe that many people live in such a small area. That make since about the inexpensiveness of 3G.
Wow...we complaining about 3.99 per gallon here. I cant believe gas is that much. I'm certain we will be there in 12 months, in less we find away to do something.
What would an average 1 bedroom cost in London? It cant be a crazy amount is it?
Well maybe I will come visit first!!!!

Try it here in CT for 4.40 per gallon of regular gas, and that's the cheapest.
...
If CT is paying 4.40 per gallon. Then it is around the corner before MN get over 4.10.
I wonder who is paying the most in the US? Clearly we arent where London is or are we?

in a really bad area, around $250,000 ~$300,000 and at the other end of the scale the sky is the limit, roughly $1,000,000 or more.
see for yourself, this is an example of one of the best area's in london, 99.9% of the normal people that live in london can't afford this, but renting a 1/2 bedroom flat will set you back around $20,000 per month
http://www.belgraviaestateagents.com/
the normal price for renting a 1/2 bedroom flat is $1000 ~$2000 per month, I pay $1400 for mine. but I live just outside london.
but at least mobile phone calls are cheap, the cheapest being 1100 anytime any network minutes or texts for $40 per month
I learn something everyday!!
I never knew it cost this much to live in London. Following your link, some of the flats were going for 3,500. I dont know what that would cost in dollars!!!
When i clicked on "buying" I saw some houses stating 'Leasehold 63 years' or 'Leasehold 193 years'. Excuse my ignorance...but what does that mean?
I'm also curious about the general demographics of who occupies these sky is the limit areas or the really bad areas? Are there families? College students? Single business owners? Political statesmen? Who live in these areas in London?
LOL £3500, is the per WEEK rental value and at current exchange rates, it is 2 dollars to the pound, so that is $7000 per week or $28,000 per 4 week month.
However apart from feb we don't have any 4 week months, so to get the true monthly value they multiply the weekly figure by 52 (weeks in the year) and then divide by 12 which is $30,333 per month.
Im not 100% on the following as I rent, but as far as I know, When you buy a House in the UK you are litteraly buying the house only, IE the bricks and mortar ! with regards to the actual land the house is sitting on, you are leasing it, houses normally come with a 99 or 999 year lease bundled in with the cost of the house (measured from when the lease was last renewed not when you purchased the house) , if you buy a house and the lease expires, you dont have to move out (infact you are protected from being forced out by law) however you do have to start paying the lease holder rent, (even though you fully purchased your property several decades before) obviously this is not a desireable situation, and if there are only a few years left on the lease, it will have a serious negative effect on the value of the house !
And with regards to who lives where, people just buy what they can afford ! you have famillies with 2 kids or more living in 1 bed flats in really bad areas and the uber rich businessman/woman using the multi million dollar house or flat in central london as a boarding home, just somewhere to stay by him/herself during his/her week in work before heading back out to the countryside to spend the weekend with the family.
The average wage in the uk is around £28,000 ($56,000) people in london are supposed to get more to absorb the higher cost of living but a lot don't even earn the average, to buy a home in the UK, the banks have just gone back to the good old days stipulating you can only borrow 3 times your wages (if your by yourself) , which means nobody on average wage in london, can buy any properties FULL stop (unless they have a mammoth deposit). you have to be earning around £45,000 ($90,000) and have the usual 10% deposit if you want a shot at purchasing a £150,000 ($300,000) 1/2 bedroom flat.
My goodness, the cost is crazy. The average or medium is clearly not in support of home buyers, (sounds exactly like here) but was is the home buying market look like there? Meaning....are people buying? Is the market ripe for it in conjuction to people's ability? What about you down the line....do you who hope to buy a home there in London for your family or maybe stay on the countryside?
Are there other places that use a different formula to calculate rent?
If rent cost that much, even for a flat, what is the homeless situation in London? Have the banks ever financed buyers, single or not, where they gave more then three times the yearly salary? Are there other programs that will support buyers outside the bank? gov., corp, etc.
Sorry for having a lot of questions.....this is just interesting to me! Besides, I'm trying to observe more or less the parellels between the states and your hometown.
Thanks ice_coffee

On top of that whenever you buy a house you pay stamp duty (a form of tax) for the house purchase, due to the high prices the govermet eliminated stamp duty for houses below £120.000 ($240 thau) wich is ridiculous due that the average U.K house price approaches £200 thau, then you got council tax (average £130 per month)...I stop ranting about the staggering number of taxes but I really would like to know how Spain France or Germany manage to have first class National health, public transport and council services (compared with those here) and the fourth rich country in the world does not manage.
In the other hand
Unemployed people can apply for housing benefit and income support (the rent paid and a meager amount of money every 2 weeks to help them keep going) single mums and people without income can apply for coucil houses and pay nil
NHS is free as in beer
Buses are free for children and the eldery....there are more benefits, and yes there are homeless some people abuse the system and the system is a mess but just say that in other parts of the world the needy gets nothing.
London is a sprawl rather than a concentration ( more LA than Newyork) Given the chance people will live in garden houses rather than flats, in flats will live however cannot afford a house or profesionals that can aford the £500000+ Luxury pad with river views plus the home at the country and profesionals that use a small flat during work days to avoid long conmmuting, an hour conmuting to work is the norm.
just an anecdote, an american couple both layers and her daugter came on holidays and wanted to see Nothing Hill, they liked the area as charming but after enquiring the price of one house the guy commented, "my god a million pounds for a place that fit inside of my garage"
Welcome to London
and now I better get back on topic
The housing market here has just come out of a massive boom period, where they were giving everybody mortgages, and I really mean everybody, they copied the US companies by giving out N.I.N.J.A mortgages to people with N.o I.ncome N.o J.ob or A.ssets or giving people 6 times their salary with no deposit, this pushed the house prices up, as supply could not meet demand. Now that this boom is over and house prices are falling, there are lots of peeps with mortgages they can't afford, having their houses repossessed. The banks are stuck with repossessed homes that they have to sell for less than they paid for them, which is why ALL the banks have gone cautious again, back to the old days of 3 times your mortgage and deposit upfront !
My fiancé and I are saving a 10% deposit at the moment, we are at £15,000 ($30,000) but we need to get to £30,000 ($60,000) so we can buy a house, we will probably stay where we are, I work nights all over London on the underground rail network, so traffic is not a problem for me, plus it is really nice where I live.
There are homeless people in London, but there are also volunteer organisations to look after them, plus the government will give free accommodation to those who apply for it as mentioned by PBL1! although it would be really crappy accomm and in a bad area and if your a single man you will be waiting years as pregnant teenage girls (thrown out by their parents) get to jump the queue!
There are some part buy schemes where you buy a percentage of a property and another organisation buys the rest and you pay them rent for their portion (this equates to a lower monthly outgoing but adds years to how long it will take for you to own outright !
also if you are a KEY worker (Medic, Police, fire etc etc) the government will put you in discount nice accommodation, any new build housing complexes have a percentage of the homes/flats dedicated to key workers only with heavy discounts.
Feel free to ask questions, that is what forums are for !

I'd travel with my friends and see the world, then I'd use the rest to make other people happy too. I'd have a lot of paintball, airsoft and real guns and a huge yard.
Also I'd have a midget. With a tuxedo.
i wd buy a PS3 a realllyy large TV and some nice games for ps3
I would donate half to my favorite charities, secure my kids education, pay off all my debt, buy my wife some nice clothes and jewelry, and have an investment firm manage the rest.........
Oh who am I kidding, I'll end up blowing it all on hookers and alcohol.
First, Pay off debts, put away more than enough for my children's education, buy a really nice large house on the lake, Boat, 1963 Corvette Stingray for myself and a four door jeep for myself for winter driving, and whatever vehicle my wife wants and do lots of travelling. I would also set up my parents and mother in law for a very comfortable retirement which I would insist should start immediately (they hate their jobs) I love my job, So I would continue working

Hmm. As much as I would like to agree with you on that, and my mom and dad say the same thing if they won the lottery, I think that is soo untrue. Right now you are thinking it is impossible to win the lottery, that is why you say that. If you had actually won a 10mil lottery, I can guarantee you wouldn't be saying that. Even though I don't know you all too well, I don't believe ANYONE could do that. Just my personal opinion. SH*T!!! I would buy VZW just for aggrivating me, then sell it all to Sprint !
First I would pay off all of mine and my families debt. Then I would deposit it all in savings accounts. Then I would continue working for one year. Then I would live off of the interest it gained. This way I would never spend the money. And my children and grand-children...etc would never have to work. There would always be a secure income for them. I would also buy Life insurance to equal the amount, so that when I die, the money would double.
Yeah-Right!! I'D PARTY LIKE A ROCK STAR!!

Sorry...but what do you mean by "One year on?" This situation we're all in has been brewing since 2006...it's just the lame terminology of what a recession is (a widespread decline in the GDP and employment and trade lasting from six months to a year). I worked with the building trade (provided tools and equipment) and we could see the slow decline in building around the last quarter in 2006. This was a sign that there was something going on...and of course the 5 year mark on ARM loans for homes was just a nail in the economic coffin. People being given homes that banks knew they could not afford--lying--err..."Underwriting" assets to inflate a person's assets so they could get a bigger loan. So...here we are with
-people living in apartments,
-working hard to get a condo or a townhouse for $120K in 2000,
-smiling in 2002 at the inflated equity their $425K home currently has,
-Using said equity to purchase a $700K house at ARM and paying only $2K a month
-Realizing that the 5 years is up and that their loan has now skyrocketed to $5K a month
-Not being able to afford such a payment, $300K in equity down the drain...
-back in an apartment.
Very sad, but I'm sure you know of at least on of these situations...
For those that are having trouble paying their home (at no fault of their own) such as loss of income, disability, hardship...Google up HAM loan modification...
might help...

but the damage don with companys going under

In India, i think we have not even seen as such as being seen by Americans.
Lots of Indian shifting back to India from America. But nonetheless we have seen some decline in sales and jobs markets, but not as much as in abroad.
guess on the ground, things are still tough..
then its scary to see the markets value going up these days again as it may
be a bubble again...
when you hit rock bottom there is only up to go
think it got some raising to do before it could be a bubble
because now most is worth more then you can get for it
Still stuck in the rut no job not prospects no future "yeah i'm making a joke" but infact i have seen no change in the current climate with work being the bigest was made redundant and the field i work in is a bismal "in my location" and has been since the day i had to leave........
Fix Up........... Look Sharpe........
Things can only get better

That´s the positive thinking!!
Cheers for that!

Unemployment index is still very high, and many companies are still a bit hesitant about hiring. However, Dow Jones is moving up (though it might just be a slight bit of higher confidence), the housing market is slowly recovering (though bad mortgages are still being collected, and "big banks" are still writing them off), hiring is looking somewhat positive for the first time in a while and consumer confidence is starting to pick up again (retail is looking good again, meaning people are spending more).
Nobody's really sure whether this is the light at the end of the tunnel, but it might be a little break from the storm.
I think many factors are behind the share rally. The cash for clunkers program is one. The Chinese government's forcing its bank to lend is another. Then, there is also the issue of financial institution given the leeway to value the toxic assets as anyting they want once again which mask the problems. Add to that the massive money printing by the US government, and some of those money are now propping up the US share market.
Bank CEO's are doing anything in their power (including cooking their books) to justify paying themselves obscene bonuses once again.
When the Chinese government forced the State controlled banks to lend, there is no actual demand by businesses or individuals to borrow it. After all the export market is shrinking rapidly. But since the order from the top must be followed, the banks have to bribe the borrowers to accept the loan. These loans ended up in risky properties, shares, and commodity futures bets and gambles. We already see how the Shanghai A share plunged 20% within a few days recently when the Chinese goverment announced that it is "finetuning" its lending policy. The Chinese has yet to learn to spell bubbles but I think it is definitely forming and that will in turn send a shockwave throughout the world.
Unemployment is still worsening, not geting better. The loan defaults in US is now a more serious problem in the primed mortgage area, even surpassing that in the subprime mortage area. The banks are once again packaging extremely risky assets and try to market them to unsuspecting investors all over again.
According to some reports, the insiders are throwing out their own share at the ratio of 8:1 (for every share they buy, they're selling 8), while the fools are being sucked in once again.
Unfortunately, retail investors will never learn. Memory is short. The reason is we're all driven by greed. Many are investing purely with a herd's mentality. Once again, they're not happy with a small trading profit and try to hold it longer for larger gain. Once again, they may find out that when the market head for the exit again, they can't sell it fast enough as the big guys who have everything computerised.
There is so much spin going around in the market, with so many experts telling us that the economy has recovered. They won't tell you about 77 (edit: Just read from Bloomberg that it is now 84 in the year 2009) US banks have already collapsed this year. According to a very famous analyst, hundreds more are heading that way. They manipulate the unemployment figures to make it look less worst than it actually is. They are trying to encourage private investor to buy up those lousy banks with worthless assets.
I think the world is now characterised by the Chinese doing all the hardwork for the West to enjoy, and their money are still with the west in the form of investments that they are stuck with. This was the great imbalance that, unless corrected, will continue to worsen the problem of the world. This imbalance is unsustainable.
The "stimulus" is no stimulus that resume the heatbeat when removed. It is more like a crutch, which remove, the patient collapses once again.
The world needs reform. The imbalance needs to be addressed. The Chinese/Japanese/Indian must start consuming more and save less. The West must start consuming less and save more. There is also progressively more imbalance in the world in terms of pay. Just look at what the greedy CEOs are getting compared to the ordinary workers. As a result, the purchasing power of the masses, hence consumption power in the economy, will suffer.
Just my 2 cents.
newsuser, nice read
S&P500 is now above 1000
I think economy will recover at least a little bit in the next year. Of course recovering from what happened is hard and takes several years but I am quite positive that it will go up again, at least because everyone tightened their belts a little bit. I think that was kind of an important lesson learned for our society. Not everything works out the way we want forever.
s&p500 is now around 1060 .. rather fast do u folks think?
Hello!
I left my night shift job last month and still don't have a job. I'm actively looking for a job, but even then I won't make it to my first pay at this pace.
Is there any way I could make a few bucks at least for gas in the meantime, just so I don't reach the negative balance?
hey sorry about that better times will come.. in the meantime I'll give you my advice and this one comes from personal experience(yes I've had a few rough times, who hasn't?)
Last time I was short on the "thing you use to buy potatoes"(sounds better in portuguese) aka money, I sold something(s) that I had and was not making use of, like my PSP for example. Broke my heart to let it go but you gotta do what you gotta do.
The point is, we always keep things we don't use anymore because we think "well I might be needing this some day" and probably will need that thing again but until then there are more important things one might need.
hope this helps
I have been out of work for 6 months...
are you handy around the house? why not post your talents online (painting, wallpapering, cleaning) on free classified postings...
I lost my job in february due to a work injury, and I was physically unable to do most work with out the use of my left arm. I have healed since then but stopped receiving disability pay in october. It has been 10 weeks and unemployment still has yet to come through and help me out.
I also have sold off things that were luxury items like my ATV and an engine I had built sitting around in my garage. A friend of mine supplements his unemployment doing odd jobs he finds off craigslist and I have helped people move and cut firewood for cash. Hoping the economy picks up locally so i can get back to work soon.
Good luck and look everywhere. Craigslist is a good place to start.
what response have you received from the unemployment office?
Have you gone to them?
If you have, did you show the letter stating when disability payments would start and/or end?
They may be waiting from a response from your previous employer...
I don't get unemployment cheques, but I'm getting a job internview this morning. Thankfully, I don't have many financial responsabilities (college student here), but I could use a few bucks just to close the gap 'till I get a job.
As for putting gas in my car... I got rear-ended yesterday, total loss, and 5 minutes later Staples calls for a job offer!

CA-CHING!!!!!!!
I can already feel your neck stiffening up and a slight loss in feeling both of your pinky toes!!!
Not really, the car took it all so I'm feeling fine, but still. Now I have to get another car with what the insurance company judges my car is worth (360 000 km, but in better condition than anything that mileage).
Trouble likes company

Judging from your post, you are a student. 88 bucks is enough to survive for 3 weeks as a student. Just make sure you have stuff that you can prepare for meals. Driving is not important.
Depends whether you want to survive or live.
LIVE:
Take a part time job. Ask friends for money. Don't drive. Cancel the cellphone for the month(if possible). Sell your PS3/XBOX.
SURVIVE :
Eat only once every two days. Don't take a bath. Take the thug life. Start a clan in the neighborhood and start stealing. Blackmail friends for money. Start pick pocketing. Thrive on Christmas party left over.
^^^THAT^^^

You're pretty much set. Borrow money for books from parents, or just wait till the first pay check to buy the books. Or do what I do. get drunk now and worry about stuff tomorrow.
Lol... I only have half bottle of hot damn left... And parents dont have the extra money, theyre about to lose their vehicles and home phone has been cut off, i paid for electric here for the month

Make some moonshine
Sell all your electonics on eBay, including youre smartphone. Go with tracphone get their barebones plan, get a cheap dumb phone. For internet access, use the school computers. This is the time to make hard choices.
Worst case scenario is living on the streets begging for money... and judging by interviews with bums i've seen, they're generally pretty happy...
