Hello Friends,
I got a new HTC Touch Diamond about two days ago. I'm very eager to transfer my songs to it and when I tried to do so by connecting the phone to the system in 'Disk Drive' mode, it didn't work.
Each time I would connect the phone to my system and select the Disk Drive mode, the below would happen:
1. I'll see a 'New Disk Drive found' notification in my system tray.
2. The add new hardware wizard would come up with a message stating that there was a problem installing the new drive.
These two steps would keep on repeating untill I unplug the phone.
Though, I can connect the phone in ActiveSync mode without any issues.
If anyone of you has faced this issue, please let me know what needs to be done? Am I missing something?
Note: I had an older version of ROM (ROM version: 1.93.720.2) when I got the phone and I updated to ROM version: 1.93.720.4. I faced this issue both the times.
I have never used the disk drive mode. This restricts you from doing many things. I would suggest transferring all your files through activesync in the normal "Explore" way. This way may take a bit longer to transfer your files, but you can also sync them (the music ones) with your pc if you have Vista.....

I agree that it applies a few restrictions, however, transferring files via this mode is much faster.
I appreciate your reply, yet I need to get the disk drive mode working.
Thanks,

try changin another usb port, i suspect the port is faulty.. or change another cable.. i encounter such issue before and it turn out dat my usb port is acting weird..
Is possible to have an issue with windows drivers.
If the phone is working in active sync mode with the same port and cable, is not that.
While is connected as Disk Drive in device manager in USB section are you seeing it as storage?
If is there try from computer management\disk management to see if the partition from the phone is ok.
Best regards,
[SOLVED] Not able to connect diamond to system in 'Disk Drive' Mode Reply to Thread
This problem is solved for me now.
It appeared that the problem lay with my system and not the phone. I removed unneccesary programs and "cleaned" my system by using a trial version of System Mechanic v8.
I tried connecting after and now both disk drive mode and activesync mode work for me.
Thanks,

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues connecting my Samsung Captivate to my computer. For about a week, it worked fine, I was able to transfer files to my phone but recently I noticed that the "USB connected" notification is not showing on the phone when plugged in to the computer.
Now, when I plug in my phone to the computer it just charges but doesn't comunicate with my computer. A friend of mine bought the same phone right after I did and he gets the "USB connected" connected when he plugs in his.
I tried using his USB cable but again, the phone is not recognized by Windows nor the phone detects it is connected to the computer. I've tried installing several USB drivers that I've come across on several forums, but nothing. I even downloaded and updated Kies to the latest version, but still nothing.
My phone is unlocked and NOT rooted, and I'm using Windows 7 x64. I've set the USB Settings to Mass Storage, even to Ask on Connection, but it doesn't ask anything when I connect the phone to a USB on my computer.
Sometimes Windows knows there is a device connected but says it couldn't recognize it.
I already did a factory reset, but the issue was not solved. I've tried connecting it to other computers, but still hasn't been able to connect my phone correctly.
What could it be?
Thanks!
Hmm. You have Mass Storage selected and up-to-date USB drivers. Try selecting USB-Debugging and Stay Awake in the Development option of your phone. If that doesn't fix it, then I have a few other ideas.
Make sure the usb door is completely open, it should click into place, some users have reported this solves their usb issues.
I did what you told me, but still my phone ain't recognized by Windows nor my phone is aware that it has been conected to a computer
What other ideas do you have in mind?

Have you tried using a different USB outlet on your computer? I had this same issue when I plugged my phone up using the USB outlet on the front of my computer then when I tried the one on the back of my computer it worked just fine.
Are you running a launcher app? I use launcher pro and can't connect until I change back to the default launcher with home switcher and launch it.

First off, think back. If it worked for a week and then suddenly stopped, what changed? Maybe you updated something on Windows or changed something on your phone. There's a reason it just stopped.
You can try using a free program called USBDeview.
It might do the trick for you and help you install the correct drivers. I'm thinking you no longer have them.
1. Download USBDeview (link is above)
2. Plug your phone in and open the program. Find all the HTC drivers-delete them
3. Unplug your phone and plug it back in
4. The correct drivers should install automatically
You can also try updating the drivers manually.
Galaxy S drivers (These are for ADB, but will work fine)
1. Click the Start Menu on your computer and right click "Computer"
2. Choose "Manage" --> it will ask you to continue --> "Device Manager"
3. Plug you phone in and look for it to pop up, probably under Portable Devices
4. Right click --> "Properties" --> "Update Driver" --> "Browse" --> "Let Me Pick" --> and navigate to the location you extracted the drivers to.
This is most likely a driver issue. I doubt your phone is messed up. You'll get it eventually. I also had a hard time getting my Captivate to connect. After uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers (more than once) it finally worked. One last thing, for now. When you uninstall drivers, also make sure you don't have any installed under your program list. As in, Control Panel --> Uninstall a program. Good luck!

I just did the new AT&T update and mine is now having this problem. I have to manually go into manage applications > usb settings > mass storage to get it to work now

I did all that yesterday, but the device ain't listed in the USBDeview nor it shows up in the Device Manager
did you finally fix this problem? because I'm having the same issue here
Same here. It was working fine, I could connect to Kies, transfer music in Media mode and see both sd drives in Mass Storage mode. Then I rooted today and now I get nothing. In anything but Kies mode I get the Windows Bong of Recognition, but still not visible in Explorer. Also, my Home screen stays active instead of switching to the USB animation like it did before. I know this can't be a consequence of rooting the phone, can it?
EDIT: More weirdness, with the phone connected in Mass Storage mode if I look at My Computer in Explorer there are 2 extra drives showing, but they are greyed out and when I click on either of them it asks me to insert a card as the drive is empty. WTF???
UPDATE: I unrooted and managed to get my USB connection back to working. It is still a bit flaky as I sometimes have to disconnect/reconnect several times before it works, but at least it now works although it sometimes loses sync in the middle of transferring a file. Can't imagine why simply rooting the phone would cause the loss of USB connectivity. I am going to reroot and see if it occurs again.
OK, a rerooted the phone and this problem is now back. I have no problem connecting while in debugging mode. I installed OCD (non-Market apps mod) and when I turn off debugging and connect I get the Windows bong and see the USB icon in the Notification bar, but the MTP screen never comes up and I can't see the phone in Explorer (Mass Storage mode) or in WMP (Media mode). Kies can;t see it in that mode, either. I really don't want to have to unroot every time I want to look at the phone contents. Any ideas? PLEASE!
I'm having a similar problem - I installed the Perception ROM and immediately afterwards I can't see the USB connection at all from my PC or my Mac. The USB icon on the phone does not come up either.
I'm trying to get my hands on a different cable - but the weird thing is when I plug the USB into my computer the phone starts charging for like half a second and then stops.
This is really annoying. I tried changing the rom to Cognition 3.02 but that didn't change anything.
There are a few topics on this here on the forum - I would recommend the following:
How are you rooting your phones? Nobody has said exactly how they are doing this. Are you using recommended rooting methods? Or are you using some app found on the market?
Make sure you have USB De-Bugging is turned on.
Make sure you have it listed as ask on connection.
For those who can see the drives in Windows...
Plug in your phone and then pull down your notification bar and click on the USB connected message. It will give you an option there to mount your SDCard(s) to Windows allowing you to transfer files.
Kies is junk - I'd recommend uninstalling it as it seems to cause more issues then it solves.
Use the drivers I have posted in the Q&A section (these are the ones that are linked in Design Gears Odin 1 Click Back to Stock post btw) - but I would try and COMPLETELY removing the pre-existing drivers before installing the new ones.
Make sure the USB Cable is plugged into the back USB port that is directly on your motherboard - this will ensure it's not a computer/hardware related issue.
I know of one user who had to go through his computer and manually remove all remnants of other drivers. I have my phone connected to both a Windows XP 32bit and a Windows 764bit systems and have been lucky to not have any USB issues.
If none of that works - I'd suggest taking it to your nearest AT&T/Rodgers shop and see if they can get the phone to connect (make sure it's back to stock!). If not they should warranty replace the device.

This isn't my first rodeo... But to answer your questions:
I used the rooting method posted in XDA forums - the one-click rooting.
I've used the drivers included in the xda-forum. Not the kies software.
The only thing that changed was the loading of a new custom rom. The cable works (confirmed on my friend's phone). I can't get odin to restore back to stock because I can't get the computer to recognize the phone in either normal or in download mode. I've restored to stock using the jh7 in the stickied q&a thread
I don't think it's a hardware issue either - I think it's software-based. I'm going to try to take it to an at&t store today at lunch to see what they say.
I also have that problem only I noticed it when I cleared the dalvik cache. It messed up the auto rotate so it was always sideways and now I have no connectivity to the PC. Let me know how ATT treats you.

What rom are you on
Hi,
I have searched, I have trown, I have do many things but cant fix this one. I was up till 5 in the morning last time but nothing. The problem I am getting appeared when I changed the usual samsung cable (which I got in box) with Nokia one, since I lost the last one Samsungs. The cable and everything is fine because it works on my notebook and there I can do everything normally.
So whats the prob:
I somehow connect my phone to the computer via media player and I can do anything with files on my phone, I can copy them to my computer BUT I cant do it vice versa, I cant copy nothing to my phone. Its just saying discovering ... and it will stay like that. In mass storage (if I get him to there ) it will lag so I have to unplug and plug it again.
Mom has the same windows 7 as me.
I have a high feeling that this has something to do with my computer being used to cable used before and I would have to delete some file from my computer (phone was already formated) ...
Oh and I have used every single USB on my computer, which is I think around 10 usbs
Restarted the comp and the phone dozen of times, still nothing.
Debuging mode, nothing appeared ...
I tried connecting to samsung kies, it wont connect, it just says connecting to a device.
Guys if you help me, my phone and I will be gratefull forever
Update: I have formated my computer also, still the same!
Update2: I will send $10 to paypal to the one who helps me with this one!
I had a similar problem, i would first ensure, that the Device isnĀ“t connected to a USB Hub, but directly into the Computer. Sometimes the front USB Panels acts like a Hub, so if its not a laptop try to plug it in the back of the computer.
You said, you already formated the device? How? If you can do this again, then make a wipe. Go into the Recovery Mode with the 3 Button Combination and select wipe. After reboot you should have a clean device.
Do you have a external memory card inside? If yes put it out.
Now connect your device to the computer, wait until all drivers are installed. If you get any problem right here, then go into Kies and on the left top Corner where it says Kies, select Driver recovery. It will automaticaly try to reinstall the drivers.
After that you should be getting a connection to Kies.
Tried, and other then loosing my massages and contacts I didnt achive nothing :S
Does anyone else have this problem? When I connect my phone to either my laptop (winXP) or my desktop (win7x64) I periodically - constantly, really - get this message:
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
When I click the message, it identifies my phone as a Generic USB Hub (4 ports) with the first child being a USB Mass Storage Device, the second being the problematic "Unknown Device" and the last two are "Unused Port"s.
This happens whether the phone is in charge-only or mass storage mode. I tried installing the autoplay drivers and that didn't help, so I uninstalled them. No hubs are involved - I've always plugged straight into the tower or laptop. I've also tried two different quality (first party Motorola) cables.
Mass storage mode works fine despite the error - I can access the Internal storage as well as the SD card. Is this a problem with my phone, or am I missing some software on the Windows side?

edit: I had it one more time, but it found them and installed them
that's very interesting. i also use 2 machines--one with xp and one with win7. my usb connection worked flawlessly on both. fyi...my connection default is mass storage, and i've actually never tried the other options. i wonder why the difference? did you make any changes? are you rooted? i am not.

Hi gr33nT,
Thanks for responding. I'm 100% stock at the moment, not rooted or anything (though it will be soon ) Sometimes I use charge only if I have it connected to my laptop at work but I still want to listen to music from the SD card. I may see if I can get Verizon to swap out the phone, the message pops up all the time and it's getting annoying...
A quick follow-up on this one: I tried the stock LG cable on my win7 machine (I had been using moto cables). I installed BOTH the bootstrap drivers as well as the LG drivers from the web - still happening. I rooted with these drivers via S1C so I know the drivers are good. If nobody else has run into this, something is probably wonky with my phone, so I'm probably going to exchange it.
For mine, every time I connect, it asks me if I want to install bootstrap. Even though, they have already been installed cuz I am rooted.
I've had the same issue both as stock, and rooted and in every configuration with the phone and PC you can think of. I've downloaded the drivers and installed them from both the phone and web site all to no avail. This is really getting annoying.
I hope someone has a fix for this.

Hmm...that is troubling. I'm still having the issue running the stock rom and rooted, now. When I get time I'm going to drop by the Verizon store and hopefully they'll replace the phone - I suggest you try the same, as I doubt it's the computers we're using. My win7 box and winXP work laptop could hardly be more different!
I doubt a replacement will fix anything, I experience the same thing as majorpay. Drivers worked for a while and then it started asking for it again. This also causes issues when using usb tether as its connecting and disconnecting. The issue is not present when used as a mass storage device.

Hi bwhxeon,
The issue (USB device not recognized - it sounds like you're referring to the autoplay driver installation) happens for me in mass storage mode also. I believe it has to be the phone as I've never had this problem on any of my PCs with my OG Droid or any other USB device. With this phone, I have the problem on all of my PCs.
I had the same problem. The error popups seemed random at first. I noticed if I enabled/disabled the WIFI on the device while it was connected, I could make the error popup.
I ended up getting a new replacement device when I also noticed the 4G Hotspot wasn't working either even after a factory restore. There was definitely a hardware issue with the phone.
USB Unknown Device
same issue here.. when using ADB though I have to set to Internet Connection then it goes away for a while until I want mass storage or just charge from USB again, then re-appears.
LG is not like most other phones as in usb debugging only works in internet connection mode where others go into it as soon as you plug it in.
Just kind of scanned this thread but have you tried a different USB cable? I was having a problem with mine only wanting to charge with the stock so I grabbed another cable and it has worked right ever since
Same issue, two different pcs, with two different cables. Bootstrap does not load anymore so I am using the drivers from the links, both sets of Lg verizon drivers
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA App
This is kind of strange. I have a 32gb Touchpad and Win 7 32bit computer. Upon first use of the Touchpad, I followed the guide posted in the tweaks and tips section right away.
I updated to 3.0.2, turned off/down logging settings, installed Preware, installed all of the recommended patches, installed Uberkernal and Govnah, and OC'd to 1.5mhz.
I then went to load some media (songs, videos, ebooks etc.) onto the touchpad by connecting the usb cable to the Win 7 machine. The computer makes the found new hardware sound and the touchpad then asks if you want to put it into USB storage mode (which I did). The computer should then pop up with the window of the Touchpad drive and assign it a drive letter (just like any other usb mass storage device), but it doesn't. when I go into windows explorer, it shows a new drive letter has been added, but when I click on it to presumably see the contents of the Touchpad's drive, the computer does nothing. In fact, it even caused Windows Explorer to stop responding.
I almost positive this is a Novacom driver issue, but that doesn't make sence due to the fact that those drivers should (and were) loaded when installing Preware.
I am not sure how to resolve this. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated. Regards, Dcartes-
I'm have a similar drive issue but it consist of the touchpad (I think), not recognizing when I disconnect the drive via the computer. This always results in that error message stating that I didn't safely remove it after I physically unplug it.

I'm not sure on the OP's question but as for the quoted response you need to go into my computer and right click the touchpads drive letter and then choose eject..
simply unplugging or using "safely remove hardware"will result in the error you are seeing
And if I connect TP via USB and then disconnect it w/o PC "eject" thing, then next time PC wont recognized TP in USB mode. And I have to restart TP to make it "recognizable" again
I go through all the normal, safe, and necessary steps but no matter what the tp always stays connected. I've even went so far as to shut my computer down completely with my tp still connected and it still stays in disk drive mode.

I've had to same problem--finally tracked it down to the original usb cable. Touchpad would still charge but was not recognized by the computer. Changed to the cable that came with my Samsung phone and everything works like a charm.

Thanks for the tip about the cable. I had the "Ouch That Hurt" message the other day after moving some pictures from my PC to the Touchpad and then ejecting the Touchpad. Ejection did not work. After the ejection process, the TP was no longer an option with either of the normal methods for ejection. So, my PC thought the TP had been ejected. But the TP did not think it had been. So, no option left but to turn off my PC or unplug the USB cable from the Touchpad to the PC.
However, I have noticed an issue with charging the Touchpad lately where I have to wiggle the cable where it connects to the Touchpad to get it to charge properly. Could be that this same flaky connection gave me a problem when trying to eject the TP after transferring the picture files? Though the pictures DID transfer properly. Will try a different cable next time. Hope I don't get a "wrong cable" message when doing that. Hate it when the TP does not eject properly as I fear I may be introducing file errors when that happens.

My HTC 8x for T-Mobile doesn't show up in windows explorer. It suddenly stopped after working perfectly from the day I got it. I thought it may be my computer, like a missing driver or a setting but it doesn't work on my work computer, while my friends lumia works perfectly on the same computer.
Did there a setting I switched off in the phone?
I really don't want to hard reset cause I have so many email accounts set up with the phone. Any help would be great!

or try to delete driver and reconect phone.
didn't do anything. Plus it doesn't work on another computer that detects my friends lumia.
Anyone have any ideas? Please any help?
I had this problem on my computer that was previously connected to my Lumia920, and the second time I have connected it, nothing detected. I just plugged/unplugged the device several times, and after 5-6 times, there it was. Is ur device functioning properly? Is there any sound of connection from ur computer when u connect ur device?
Is your phone locked, by chance? I noticed that if the phone is locked it will not expose the file subsystems unless its unlocked.
some people have also reported that using a different usb port in your computer also helps.
Make sure you are using short USB cable that is working with another phone. Half of problems i have with computer "not detected" phones was due to low quality USB cables and under-powered USB ports, especially ones located at front of computer. Try to experiment with different USB cables and USB ports on different computers, this sounds stupid but helps in half a cases .

Watch for Memory card!
Hi,
Try to remove the memory card and reattach the device.
It solved the problem for me and read on some places about it.
Be careful what size and 'shape'(brand) memory card you use as it can block usb usage as it seems for me.
Method 1:
Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (Universal Serial Bus) drives, etc...)Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up.
If this corrects the issue then add the devices back one at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue. Then get any updated drivers\software for the device.
Method 2:
If you still come across the issue, I suggest you to run Hardware Troubleshooter and then check for the issue.
Method 3:
If the above step does not help us to diagnose the issue, uninstall the drivers for USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller and restart the computer. Let Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.
a) Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then Device Manager in the search box.*
b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c) Look for the device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller, right click on it and select Uninstall.
d) Reboot the computer.
e) On reboot, Windows 7 should re-install the drivers automatically.
You may also refer the steps from the manufacture website or contact Nokia for any known issues.

Try installing the Nokia Software Recovery Tool or the Nokia Care Suite. It should install all of the drivers necessary to connect your device. There is probably a driver corrupted.
the question you need to ask is if your friend has the same model Lumia as you. If he doesn't, it could be a problem with the driver on your PC.
If he does have the same model as you, it has to be a problem with your phone. You need to do a factory reset.
Have you checked if it works with the Windows Phone app?
Also, there is really no reason to have a need to connect it to a PC. As long as you store your documents and photos in OneDrive, you can easily access them from your PC without having to connect your device.
