Being out of town in a hotel that has a flickering connection with a wireless (more spiritless than wireless....) I thought of giving my installed WMWifiRouter a try. I had it installed some time in January and never used it. Despite the successful connection between the Kaiser and the network, the laptop recognized the WMWifiRouter only twice, for very short time, and it never connected. I searched for instructions in the forum and the only available stated that WMWifiRouter 8 had everything packaged in the cab, no extra hacking needed. It also all referred to a website which apparently has been taken down. Has anybody made it work successfully? Are there any changes that need to be done to the phone other than installing and running the WMWifiRouter? Does the Internet Sharing Kaiser program need to be specially configured? Finally, does the Laptop need to be set up in any special way?
Thanks for any help!

At some point you had made an adhoc connection to your phone, if it was there previously then you didnt have to do that first step. But if you never set up an adhoc connection to the other device then its necessary to do so before running the app.
How do you make an ad hoc Wifi connection between the phone and the laptop? I am not sure I understand what that means.Could you please explain in simple steps?

I could be wrong. But I believed the latest WmWifirouter package will handle everything on the PDA side include the adhoc SSID. Otherwise:
1. Start > Settings > Connections > "Wi-fi" > "Add New ..."
2. "wifirouter" for Netowork Name, "Connects to:" = "The Internet", Check "This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection"
3. In Wmwifirouter, make sure to check "Use DHCP Allocator" so that Kaiser will acted as a DHCP server and assign IP to yr laptop, click "connect"
4. From yr laptop, search for "wifirouter" as SSID and connect to it.
The final version of the program does not allow for DHCP allocations etc., seems to do it all by itself. The ironic thing is that it connected somehow, after about 10 attempts, and I am usiing it to write this one.
Thanks for all your help and patience!
WMWiFiRouter site down
I'd like to give WMWiFiRouter a try. The site is down. How can I get a copy?
Thanks, Bren
The files had to be removed at the authors request. Keep checking his site for details!
http://www.wmwifirouter.com/
Or you can check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357152
Also im going to lock this thread, all support details should be referred to the above thread due to the authors request to pull the software. I dont want to have this app sneaking its way in and having negative affects on the author.
1) I installed SMS chat thread v 1.0 which did not work. i think it is designed for touch screens and I have an HTC s730. I used the WM remove programs tool but it left behind several folders which can be seen only on the folders screen for messaging. I lso have no confirmation after send feature. The company, vito technology has not responded. Any ideas?
2)can anyone recommend a GOOD sms app for the HTC S730?
thanks!
How can I make absolutely sure my phone doesn't connect to 3G/EDGE unintentionally? I don't want it to default to this when it can't connect to a specific WiFi-signal, since my calling plan has terrible rates for data transfers.

i may have the perfect solution for this....(especially if you're operator is Tmobile)
go to start>settings>connections>connections.
manage existing modem connections.
tap and hold that connection located there and delete it.
now without connecting to a wifi signal, open your browser and type a site (ex. google.com) and if that edge/3g doesn't pop up, SUCCESS!!!
hope it works and good luck.
Is there registry hack to force phone to ask user confirmation before connecting using GPRS/EDGE/3G. All normal phones has that...

I'm not recognizing the menu choices there, is this for a s730? I did try to change user name and password in GRPS settings under Start>settings>connections>GPRS, but that didn't seem to help either.
What omadon99 suggested about a registry hack would be perfect, since I don't want to permanently disable 3G/EDGE, I just don't want the phone to connect to it and cost me money without confirmation when WiFi doesn't work.
I am a fresh owner of an unlocked HTC 8925 and I am having the hardest time connecting to the internet via WIFI. I connect to any hotspot just fine (atleast that's what the phone indicates to me) but when it is time to hit the internet with internet explorer it tells me that I can't go anywhere. (Yes, I chose that this connection connects to the internet)
I don't recall the exact error message but it was along the lines of that any websites I tried to go to was name unknown or something like that. I'll get the exact error message if needed.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you.

have you got the IEEE 802.11b/g etc set to "the internet"?
it may be obvious/you've already checked it, but i thought i'd ask, seeing as no one has commented yet...

GOT IT! At least for myself (HTC Touch "Elf" w/ ShadoW 2.0 ROM).
Was going MAD over this.
Problem is that some programs (in my case the WMWiFi Router ICS software) changes the default network settings for WiFi.
Go to Settings-->WiFi -->Network Adapters Tab. Click on your main WiFi adapter (in my case "IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi Adapter") and select "Use server assigned IP address".
If this doesn't help (i.e. already checked) I do apologize. Worked in my case.
Hope this helps!
has anyone figured out a way to get the GPS to work with any nav software (i have the Garmin SD card) or use the HTC Internet Sharing without having to give AT&T the extra dough every month?
Also, do these features work with a new ROM?
thanks guys!
GPS on Pure is not locked so even with the AT&T stock ROM you should be able to run you nav software. I personally have tried Google Maps, Bing and TomTom, all working fine, so I don't think there should be a reason for Garmin not to work.
Haven't checked the Internet Sharing with stock ROM though because impatience just drove me putting a cooked ROM onto the device before I really explored all the stock ROM features/bloatwares. However, I can confirm that Internet Sharing works like a charm with my current ROM (I'm running Duttys at this point and am going to try out EnergyROM pretty soon).
Hope this helps.
do u have a direct link to where i can get the ROM you are using?

I'm using the stock rom that comes from ATT Pure.
I installed Garmin, Google Maps and Bing and all of them are working without making any change to registries or any trick.
definitively the GPS is not locked on the original ATT Rom
Following along with the others in this thread. Third party GPS tools seem to work well.
As far as Internet Sharing, you'll want to check this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437796
Is anyone else having this issue (having searched, haven't found 'lest I'm blind )
On my AT&T Pure, have GPSToday (full app, not the "today screen" version) and Bing. Both have worked fine on my old Kaiser, when GPS running, the apps both actively download new map sections as I go...
However...
On the Pure, if I open either app and run GPS, the app doesn't update maps, but when I stay in the app and turn OFF the GPS, both apps will start downloading map data (from the centerpoint of the last GPS position...
it's almost like there's something in the Pure (or some setting I've screwed up?) that shuts off these apps' access to the data network when the GPS is on... I'll test that this afternoon after my class, by allowing GPS to run in Bing and seeing if IE will hit the Internet... but in the meantime, just wondering if anyone else is/has experienced this?

Great, worked for At&t Pure. I'm now using MEdia Net. You may be able to change the registry key Value from At&t ISP Net to MEdia Net so you won't have to deal with accdidently clicking the drop-down when you connect.

Just install this cab and set both your networks to MediaNet and you can tether.
How do i get the ATT Pure to Share the Internet
I can't get the phone to to the internet sharing, I have uninstalled the proxy but to no good. If you go to the program for intenet sharing I dont get any option, I click to connect and the error message says unable to connect. Is there a register edit to be done or do i have to pay ATT more $$$$ for the service?

First go to Settings\Connections\Connections\Advanced\Select Networks and set both to Media Net, click OK.
Then go to Tasks\Manage Existing Connections\Proxy Settings and check "This network connects to the internet" and uncheck "This network uses a proxy server", also remove the proxy server settings.
For the second part, it may be greyed out if you're on the stock ROM, if so, install the RemoveHiddenProxy.cab posted previously.
having problems again and again on just unlocking the phone so I can put a new ROM on it. I too want to use the tethering on my HTC Pure from AT&T. Have a link to a simple process to unlock and push the ROM?

Wifi tethering is built into the leaked 2.2 rom. Just go to Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP
If not on 2.2, this is the best I've seen so far. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
USB tethering is built into the phone.
For 2.2: Settings > Wireless and network > Tethering.
For 2.1: Settings> Applications > USB Settings
Isn't the built in usb tethering in 2.1 so you can use at&t's subscription tethering service? If not I wasted $10 on EasyTeather. (which works like a CHAMP btw.)
PDANet adds the bonus of being able to text using your computer also. Costs more if I remember right.
For sure on froyo MobilAP is full of win.

Neither Hotsport nor Tether Works on Captivate
Hmm, so I tried "Wireless Teather" but failed to ever get the computer to recognize the wifi hotspot...any ideas there?
As for tethering direct from the USB, when I go to Settings > Applications > USB Connections, I only get the following:
Kies
Media Player
Mass Storage
Ask on Connection
No option to tether...
Ideas?

Samsung's i896 Captivate (Rogers version) allows for wireless tethering, stock:
Settings -» Wireless and network -» Mobile AP settings -» [hit the checkbox]
AFAIK, PDANet is a free-download:
junefabrics [dot] com/android/download.php [you know what to do]
This works for me, I've tested it: very easy setup.
Could it be, that the i897 (AT&T) rendition of the Captivate does not include wireless tethering by default...?

Got WiFi Up and Running...But...
OK OK...thanks to the thread WIFI is up and running on the captivate (tethering I am still clueless). But I am using the latest version of WIFI TETHERING and it appears to be working fine. I am using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk version on this site:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
BUT:
Here is the real pickle now....it works GREAT (about 2MBPS) until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
I know this sounds like a real trivial question...but the AT&T cap on data cards simply devastated our internet in my house (we live in the sticks). I am trying to find a good alternative.
To summarize:
Internet now works on WIFI until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
One possibility for you would be to install Cognition. It enables both Mobile AP and USB Tethering, among other things. You have two choices, Eclair or Froyo. Cognition 2.1.7 is Eclair and includes the JH7 rom update. This version is completely stable. The Cognition 2.2 Froyo beta versions are also good but there are a couple of issues.
I have had Cognition 2.1.6 installed since the day Froyo was first leaked. I decided not to intall Froyo until the release version is available. My version of Cognition runs fantastic. There are zero issues.
When you have USB Tethering insatlled, there will be an additional option in the USB Settings screen: Samsung Kies, Media player, Mass storage, "PC Internet" and Ask on Connection. PC Internet is the Tethering option.
I havn't used either wifi mobile ap, or usb tethering much, so I don't know how well either of them works, but just thought this might be one possible solution for you to try.

I believe there may be an easier way. I think I remember seeing a thread in the apps and themes forum about a ported mobile AP app from one of the i9000 roms. I could be wrong of course. I'd find the link but I just woke up and am now planning on passing out again

You probably already found this, but, you would be installing from stock 2.1 I believe, so here. This rom is drop dead easy to install:

I have both working setup yesterday via Perception. All I did is go to Wireless and Networks and chose MobileAP. That's for the wireless. Then for the usb, I chose Tethering. My windows installed an Samsung NDIS driver for the device.
It works perfectly on the internet. However on VPN, it works but I get disconnected in less than 2 minutes. I am able to remote desktop to a Windows machine as well as ssh to a unix machine but after a minute, my access is gone. The remote machine wouldn't respond anymore. I had to disconnect my VPN then reconnect again. Not sure why.
I can't speak for the stock ROM since I've been on Cognition for quite a while and now Perception. However, I just tried the USB Tethering on Perception... plugged in the USB cable, selected Mass Storage... then went into Settings->Wifi->Tethering and turned on USB Tethering. Took Windows a minute to install the drivers and whatever else it decides to do when you plug something new in and withing about a minute and a half, was connected to the internet via my phone. (typing this on it right now actually)
I believe Cognition had the same option available... but can't be 100% sure since I never used it prior to just now.
Have also used the wifi tethering without issue since some of the earlier cognition 2.2 releases.
