back a couple years when I had my Tilt (Kaiser) I created a folder "FilesToBeDeleted" as a temporary folder. After I deleted the folder, I found it residing on the phone windows directory... Deleted it. and this folder keeps coming back and forth. When I upgraded to the ATT FUZE (Rafael) I used the same SD card and now the folder keeps coming back.
Does anyone has any idea why the folder keeps coming back? Thanks
i think this is something like the recycle bin in windows desktop's version. I am not sure what uses it though, it might be the regular file explorer or other explorers like Total Commander and the like.

The only program that uses recycle bin is Resco explorer. neither total commander nor the windows mobile explorer uses recycle bin. I never used Resco... But thanks for the try, hopefully someone else ran into this problem before. I just hope isnt a virus or some sort of thing.
hey all~
i don't have a solution but i did want to say, your not alone...i have the same exact problem, lol i even used a kraiser priviously and am now using the same memory card (that i DID wipe)

"Filestobedeleted" is a generic folder name used for alot of programs and the microsoft installation, it could just be that it keeps appearin cuz ur installing programs, and there the tempory files or other temp files form software that updated itself
Yeah, if you make a cab file with Quickcab, and are only making a reg change with the cab, you have to add a file to the cab to get it to work. Most people stick a blank .txt file in and send it to filestobedeleted.

For some reason, I'm not sure why, when I open File Explorer it just hangs. It keeps loading. I have to go to Memory and end the task. File Explorer always opens up on \Windows. It's probably because the folder is so huge but I'm sure it's something else. Because it crashes I'm not able to install anything else since I can't browse folders. Can any of you guys help? At least for starters, is there a registry key I can change to not make it try reading \Windows at startup?
Okay, I found the regkey and changed start location to "\" and it works now. I still don't know I can't access the windows folder though. it'll hang my system until i can get to my PC and use the remote registry editor.
can somebody recommend a good alternative folder browser?

Total Commander will do the job nicely. BUT honestly I would do a hard reset as if you continue with that problem it will make life a misery in the future and indeed corruption on the windows directory could interfere with other things too.
It's also probable that the likes of Total Commander might also hang.
Unlike the TyTn 1 the Kaiser should open up the Windows directory failrly quickly.

Here are two fixes:
Using a registry editor:
HKCU>software>microsoft>file explorer>Local Path (change \Windows to just \)
Last location on 0 (zero)
Reset
And if that doesn't work (this fixed my issue),
then open File Explorer
Click on Menu>Sort> change it to Name
Okay, after doing a hard reset, and restoring from sprite- I now have 2 calculators under programs. calulator, and calculator (1). how do i get rid of the second one- they both work btw.
I have the same issue. I took care of it before by navigating to a folder \windows but I cant seem to remember the folder.
If you find it, you will simply see 2 icons, delete the one with the (1) attached to it.
Let me know the directory please, I cant find it and my windows load time is long.
Should be windows\start menu\
I don't have any calculators in the Programs folder - where in the \Windows directory does the shortcut point to?
Just subtract
two
minus
one
equal
One.

yeah, it was there, it makes it easier to find, if you change the sort paramater to type.
I had this problem after doing a sprite back up as well, only my tilt changed the file explorer into the second calculator link. I had no way of getting in to try to fix it because I couldn't access file explorer to change it. I ended up doing a hard reset back to stock settings to get my file explorer back.
After long last, I have a new laptop and a new Kaiser. Had to get rid of the 8525 since I could get such a hell of a deal on it.
It's been a few months since I had been on the forum because of the laptop issues, but now I have Vista (blah) and things are a bit different. But luckily, I have voided the warranty w/in 5 hours of having my phone.
Glad to be back, but couldn't find any threads that answered my question.
Does anyone know how to access the Windows directory on the mobile device via Vista Windows Explorer??
I am trying to copy some .png files over to the windows directory to replace the HTC HOME items, but it won't let me on the old desktop I had so I was just going to stick with the laptop and mess with my phone through that. The old Hermes thread said I could just transfer files like welcomehead.96 over to the directory to overwrite, but I keep getting errors.
Can anyone direct me? or PM some answers? Thanks
In Windows, choose TOOLS, Folder Options, View and then uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
You are getting errors when trying to overwrite the files because they are in the rom. Vista's built in system file protection will not allow the files to be overwritten. Your best bet is to copy the files to My Documents on the phone, and then use Total Commander to move them into the Windows directory.
ahh.. i did not know they are built into roms now... thanks
Been messing around with some of the more basic tweaks, and I have all of a sudden got a major issue. My File Explorer takes an extraordinary amount of time to load up the Windows directory. I mean, it sits there for a good 5 minutes before it loads up that directory. Once it is opened, I can navigate through my device and the other folders just fine, but the SECOND I try to get into the Windows directory it's just wait-city....
I did not tweak anything with File Explorer. Is there any way to fix this?
its my first PPC so maybe im missing something but... why would u ever really need to explore your Windows Folder that much on your phone? and ofcourse it takes a ton of time to load, it has tons of system files in there to enumerate
that is weird though, mine takes a while to load up, but certainly not 5 minutes
if you are installing programs into your Windows folder, and trying to access them through the File Explorer, then ur "doing it wrong" as they say on this here internets... most anytime i mess with my windows folder on my phone, im doing synced up with active sync on my PC
There are actualyl plenty of reasons to be in the Windows Directory. And many of them have to do with tweaking and other enhancements to the device.
Just backup your stuff and do a hard reset, perhaps it is worth making a note of which stuff you changed should this happen again?
EDIT: Yes there are PENTY of reasons to be navigating into the \Windows folder on a PPC so its not a "doing it wrong" situation...however it is always wise to research the tweaks and changes you are carrying out should you end up in the situation where you cant boot the device....hence losing your data.
On my ELFin, I think this used to happen whenever I messed about with TF2D themes, since they contain hundreds of files.
Mine will load from my PC or on the phone in about 30 seconds (slightly longer from the phone itself)
5 minutes seems rather excessive just for the window's directory
As stated above try the reset on it to see about clearing up some memory.
Also when active sync came up on the phone did you accidentally select a different type of connection than active sync? I did once and everything ran super slow unless I was browsing through it as a thumb drive.
On WM, windows throws EVERYTHING into that one directory, the more stuff you add, the more that directory gets filled. I know my tilt could take like a minute to load that one directory. At the moment the Fuze loads it in under 15 seconds.
I use it to launch cabs and find files. Its my first PPC w/e its called. I had that happen before though it lagged soo much i reset my fuze and it fixed it.
A lot of the time is how its sorted. Make sure its sorted by name, as this is how the files are normally indexed. If you select sort by Type, it has to sort it each and every time you try to browse to the Windows directory. Its nothing wrong with your Fuze, but rather Windows Mobile. We are so due for an update.
Hi Supertruck,
You could try using Total Commander instead of File Explorer, it's loads better by far.
Also, you can setup directory hotlists so if you need to take a look at \Windows\Rings or \Windows\StartUp for example you can navigate straight there and miss out the wait while the device enumerates the \Windows dir.
Cheers,
D.
m. carroll....that was it!!! I had it sorted by file type because I was doing the PTT changes and was copying .lnk files around and wanted them all together. It opens right up now that I have it sorted by Name.
Strange how something so small can make such a huge differece.
Thanks so much!!!
Just did a backup using Sprite and it reported errors. Said it could not backup the folders in "Documents and settings\Default" folder. When I looked in it there were 62 folders simply called "." . I cannot delete them. Anyone know how to get rid of them or what might be causing them
Mmmm...
Are you using the built-in file explorer? I'm sure if you use Resco Explorer / Total Commander or similar, you should be able to delete them. You might get a 'are you sure' message, but you should be able to get rid of them.

Tried that. No joy. In the end I hard reset and restored. Now they have vanished coz Sprite hadn't backed them up. Still intrigued to know why they appeared
