doubts regarding the diamond.. - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

guys, i have few doubts regarding my diamond..
i went thru the link for the ROMs which i got from one of the members..i had few queries in mind..i would be glad if someone could clear them-
1st- y do v need cooked ROM anyways??is there any significant increase in the speed of the device? if yes, which ROM should one go for??
2nd- will overwriting the original ROM with the cooked ROM erase the existing data/contact loaded on my device?
3rd- as i personally feel that the system which HTC has provided over the existing 6.1 is great( those contact and weather stuff), will overwriting the device with windows 6.5 erase all that system??or will that retain and only 6.1 will be replaced by 6.5? i have a frnd who says that 6.5 is way too good than 6.1 and i should put 6.5 in my device..mind u, he does not have diamond. he owns a asus p320.
4th- i also use wi-fi device very frequently on my device...the problem is that the device gets heated up very speedily, the battery life while using wifi is PATHETIC..i just wanted to know that if its normal. also, do i need to use any antivirus for my diamond??
i would be greatefull if somebody would clear away my doubts...thnx..

2nd- yes
3rd- updating the rom will replace anything with what the new rom bring to the table for better or worse only way to go back is to flash it with a rom of the pre version
"do i need to use any antivirus for my diamond??

Because (depending on the chosen ROM of course) :
You may have significant performance boosts
The included software is different, especially if you had a carrier branded rom (for example, the Orange stock rom I had with my french diamond didn't have any Google Maps or Youtube software)
Using so-called "light roms" will free space on the main storage area

Yes, but it won't wipe the "internal storage" (that replaces the SD memory card). Depending on the software you have installed to the internal storage, you will want to wipe it also (after having backed up you data of course) so that no conflict arrises with software coming along with the new rom

Everything is replaced when you flash the new ROM. However, many ROMs exist, some have the "HTC system" (actually called Touch Flo 3D or TF3D) and some have only the Windows Mobile 6.5 "Titanium" user interface. You must choose the right ROM to go with.

This device heats up a lot compared to others, whatever ROM you use. Some Radio ROMs make the device heat a little less, according to some people out there.
Hope this helps.

Here's my take:
1. Sometimes. You have to understand what you have before you download. Each string of posts generally refers to different ROMs. Until lately, the ROMs were the whole package (bootloader, Core OS, Phone and Ext ROM). Most folks want the latest OS possible, but want the phone part from an older ROM, so in some cases the phone part of the ROM has been split out as a separate installation. In other cases, Ext ROMs have been undated and distributed by themselves.
2. Depends on what ROM you've got. If you have the all-in-one type, everything gets wiped out and upgraded. Even if you do a backup, chances are its no good because the backup was for the old OS and is incompatible with the new OS. If you install just a phone or Ext ROM, the core OS and all your settings SHOULD be left alone. However just this week some goob couldn't run the right files in the Phone upgrade and nearly bricked his phone, then pissed all over the other guy trying to help...(reference the Great KeithT Rant of '06)
3. Assume you're talking about upgrading the Core OS and leaving the Ext ROM as is. Don't know of a way to do this--it hasn't been mentioned as a possibility in the Wizard upgrade forum in the past few months AFAIK. I think this is highly unlikely anyway, as the Core OS ROM is really in charge of everything. You'll want the match the Ext ROM with whatever Cell provider you have, and there are more than enough all-in-one ROMs to suit nearly every carrier. I'd suggest searching: "T-Mobile ROM upgrade" or whatever provider you have to get a Core OS/Phone/ExtROM all together.
4. Many applications are included in the Core OS ROM, like pocket Word, Excel, mail, etc. I think MSN is included in the Ext ROM, but not sure. Anyway, just got to try it and find out!
5. This is a little tougher. I recommend the latest Core OS matched with an Ext ROM for your cell provider. There is some debate over the best phone ROMs (see recent posts in this forum) depending on the towers in your area. Note, the latest Core OS doesn't necessarily have the highest version number. Someone leaked a Cingular ROM v2.25, then another TMo ROM v2.24 was actually a later build. Diff providers have different numbering schemes.
Good luck, read a bunch, and feel a little comfortable with what you're doing before you leap. Lots of folks here will help if you get in trouble, but be expected not have your head up your arse before asking for help!

install multiple rom or not?

do ppl install and enable multi roms--like multiboot on pc?
or do they hafto recompile or such to get tweaks like they want?
like ala carte.. pick and choose and recompile
or do they just find what they like best?
im assuming that a rom completely wipes out and starts phone fresh?
thanx
Answer is probably very simple: no
Don't ask me technical details, but that's just the way it is. Android, due to it's nature, can be run on an existing ROM (making it a sort of multiboot...)

Dual boot is not possible with our devices as of yet. I am not even sure if this is doable at all. People who are technical and capable cook their own ROM and use it. Others just find what they like the best and use it. And yes, you are correct that flashing a new ROM completely wipes out the device; however, some files could be left behind from old installation so one of the steps in flashing recommends hard-resetting your device to completely clean the memory.
so android is for kaiser only and i assume that this means Not Tilt?
that android page has 386 posts to wade thru...
the terms kaiser and tilt are not completely interchangeable?
thanx
The Kaiser and Tilt terms are quite interchangable. There are some differences, but Kaiser is the general HTC codename for the device, and Tilt is just a branded version of the Kaiser (with some naunces; a subversion you might say).
Andriod can be used on a Tilt.

SIM Unlock help...

Hi all,
I had an O2 XDA Stellar which I believe is the HTC TYTN II. However, this phone was stolen a couple of weeks back. I purchased a second hand one today which is sim locked to the orange network. I managed to break the lock by following the instructions on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835. I followed the instructions word for word till step 5.
The problem is now though it accepts the SIM and I can dial out, I don't have any audio on the calls So I can call and my phone also rings when I receive a call but I can't hear the caller nor can I be heard at the other end
Also, I hate the orange rom (and I used to complain about the O2 rom) and I wish to use the default HTC WM 6.1 professional upgrade the problem again is that it asks for a serial number and my serial number starts with DCOxxxxxxxxxxx and it says that this is not a valid serial number
What do I do now? Has my phone become a brick Please do help I can't bear the thought of having one stolen and the other toasted by me
All help will be greatly appreciated

Did you actually read anything or did you just start hacking away ? I will cut and paste a few items out of that thread, so that you don't have to actually read it .
PLEASE READ THE *FAQ* BEFORE FLASHING OR ASKING QUESTIONS!!!
* IF YOU DONT NEED TO FLASH A NEW ROM THEN PROCEED TO STEP 6 TO PUT YOUR DESIRED RADIO BACK*
7. After I flash a Rom I dont have any sound in calls and the camera is black
The Radio has to match the version of Rom you flash i.e. WM6.1, an incorrect Radio will give sound and camera problems. Read The Ultimate Radio Thread to find a Radio that matches the Rom there are lots to try on there if one doesnt work then try another.
3. What are the different types of Unlock?[/B] (answer by DaveShaw)
The three stages of unlock are:
SIM: Allows you to use SIM's from another carrier. Can be done using codes or unlocker programs on xda-devs.
Security: Allows you to flash radios from another device - It does other stuff, but this is all the casual user will use it for
CID: CID unlocking is an old concept, nowadays you flash HardSPL instead. This lets you flash any ROM, Splash or Radio (depending on sec unlock) to your device. N.B. the CID is the carrier ID (e.g. HTC__001). The stock SPL's only let you flash ROM's that match the CID in the ROM image with the CID on your device.
Obviously you did not unlock your phone if a serial number is needed to flash a new rom. I would re read everything and do it again
Thanks for the reply

I've been through this link as well and I was contemplating installing the latest version of the HTC WM6.1 ROMS (version 3.34.721.2, radio version 1.70.19.09) available at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs However I was not sure if this would be ok and (at the risk of sounding extremely dumb) I was not sure what WWE stood for

I maintained the default that was given by the unlocker for the CID (I think all zeros). Do I have to change this as per the ROM image? I don't mind re-doing this again it's a relief that my device isn't busted
No your phone isn't busted. Go into bootloader and check what it says next to spl, if you followed Mark's steps, it should say 3.29 Hard. If that is what it says ,then you can flash any Kaiser rom you want. If it doesn't then start over again.
WWE stands for World Wide English and those roms are all in English. That rom you picked will be fine, if you do not wish to explore the fine world of custom roms ? Maybe later.
You only have to CID unlock once by following the steps, not at every rom flash.
No sound means wrong radio, 6.0 roms need 6.0 radios and 6.1 roms need 6.1 radios. If the rom has a radio in it already then flash away.
Thanks Denco Flashed the ones I mentioned and it works perfect. Can't believe I actually have a working device Thanks for all your help, really great.
Now to sync my data to my new (second hand) htc and I'm good to go
Another question, the device works fine, however since it is a HK rom, it seems to have localised to HK. I've changed this as much as possible to UK. However, I'm wondering if this will affect anything else? For example the gps? Is there any quicker way to configure this globally so all settings use UK instead of HK?
Why didn't you flash the latest UK ROM.
Use this code: HT750GB02264 to download from HTC's site.

Once you are unlocked and HardSpl'd you can flash any rom you want. Pick a UK one another WWE rom or a custom rom. Test a bunch until you have one you like. Your only restriction is it has to be a Kaiser rom. And with all the Kaiser roms available, it is not a restriction at all.

Wow, thanks for that, I was looking for a valid serial through which I can download from the htc uk site One question I had is do I install the radio which I download from htc? Or do I keep the one I have already flashed? The one I have flashed yesterday seems to be a later version than what I've downloaded from htc

1. I keep hearing on this forum about Hard SPL, I'm not sure what this is used for or why it is required but I followed the instructions and it seems I had installed JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe. Now, since then I had flashed the rom, so do I need to reinstall this again? Is there some other one I should be using? I come across different versions on some threads. Also, how can I check the version of HardSPL I have?
2. When I view the memory (under settings) it shows me Storage and Program. However, I can't seem to see any storage area in file explorer. I know in my old xda 2i, there used to be a separate storage area. The reason is because some of the apps I install are quite bulky for example lexisgoo english dictionary (the dictionary files themselves are about 18mb) and this fills up the main memory. How can I install this in the storage memory? (not storage card since I sometimes swap storage cards)
Sorry lot of questions I know, but I'm a newbie and all help will be greatly appreciated
The UK downloaded ROM will install the radio too.
I would do a bit of testing with your current set-up, then flash the UK ROM.
Test the new UK ROM & radio & then reflash the radio only if you want (do some searching on Radio versions)
Newer versions are not always best, chasing the latest builds normally bites you in the ass at the end of the day.
Check HardSPL by going into bootloader:
* Using a stylus, press and hold the soft reset button at the bottom of the phone along with the camera button
* Release both buttons once the bootloader screen appears
* Exit bootloader by pressing soft reset button
Once you have installed HardSPL thats it, job done (you installed it during unlocking)
What you see in file explorer regarding storage is correct: 128MB RAM for running software ect & 256MB ROM for storing your programs ect (WM2003SE was different)
ROM can be increased by using one of the cooked lite ROMs if storage space is a concern.

I've attached a screenshot of my memory screen. The bit that puzzles me is that the storage area apparently has a lot more storage but I do not have an option to install all my applications on that area or atleast the bulky ones. I don't think I need a lite one since I do have 112MB free in the storage area which is more than sufficient for all the apps I usually install. Can you advise how I can install apps to the storage area as well?
Lastly, I was wondering if it is possible for me install my apps on the rom and then kind of take an image of my setup and flash the rom with this setup. That way when I do a hard reset, all my apps are installed again. Which will save me the trouble I know sprite backup does something like this but I'd prefer if it was in the rom
Thanks for all your help, it has given me a lot of confidence in these matters. Something I probably wouldn't have attempted

I agree 101% and it appears fewer resources are put into ironing out bugs in the WM 6.1 ROMs than the WM 6.0 ones. I replied to fmervin's post in the ROM forums along these lines.
If all is running OK I would stick with your current HardSPL.
When installing your applications choose the option of installing to "Device"
You could install all your apps into a ROM, this would be cooking a ROM & is a complex process.
I would suggest a backup via Sprite or SPB. I use SPB v2.0 build3065 & it works well for me, preference of backup software is a bit of a Marmite scenario, you either love it or hate it.

You can't do that, it is flash memory. It's not like you can partition the hard drive.
But this is the easiest way to get your Apps and settings back after a flash.
Try this Sashimi Auto installer by a former XDA member. It is a nice little program that installs all your apps after a flash

Hey Denco..Than'x for considering my thread & giving out suggestion towards the link to check the info. But i m really nt that techy afterall so i can burn a ROM on my Tytn II. Even though i tried to burn a RUU rom that supports TyTN II ..Its just gets disconnected from USB mode..So i was looking forward to start it initially with some comparatively easier to install .cab files..Can't these RUU files be transformed into .cab files or maybe some other version of Manila 3D cab file that is completely fixed...I seriously have done a lot of research upon this but nothing looks like working. So please if you have some links to .cab files that can give a better & different look to my Kaiser running Windows 6.1...It'l be a great help !!

I think you need to decide what it is that you want to accomplish. Unless you cook your own rom, there is no way to add apps to the rom ( so that they will remain after a hard reset) Your rom is wyour phone's base operating system, it contains your OS (WM 6.1 ) and can only be replaced after completely erasing and replacing all files from the previous rom.
If it is a new rom you want, pick a rom that interests you and follow these instructions verbatim .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
Your phone will go to the bootloader screen ( three color) and it will disconnect from usb during the process, but be patient until the end. When it says it takes ten minutes, it takes ten minutes. Leave the room if you have to , to keep from getting impatient.
If you just want to keep your OEM WM 6.1 and keep it simple, but change the look of your phone try this,
http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Manila+2D+and+M2D+Themes
This will change the look and feel of your phone with uninstallable .cab files and will not affect the rom or brick your phone by accident.

Just got an old Tilt/8925, need updates?

hi all, I just got my wife's old tilt. No software or ROMs have been updated on this device at all and I'm curious what updates anyone can recommend that I install.
I did read through the WIKI and it was hard to tell what is the most recent updates available. Nothing is really working incorrectly on the unit, I just want the newest, fastest software/rom etc installed.
is there a windows mobile update that I should install? I saw some references to touchflow 3d working on the tilt, is this worth installing?
I'm starting from square one here and am looking for some general info which is why I posted in this room as opposed to the software or rom rooms. Any info would be great. thanks!
taz
The first thing you need to do is back up your phone. You can sync your or what I would do is use back up your data to your card. DO NOT USE SPRITE BACKUP THAT IS ON YOUR PHONE! I did this and could not get it to restore to my phone. Use PIM Backup. You can get the cab file by doing a search on the software thread.
I just upgrade my rom on my Tilt 8925 last week and I used build 23069 and I really like it so far. Make sure you also download the Jumpspl56,Jumpspl93 and Jumpspl94 file. You will have to add that to your phone first and I used the Jumpspl56 file. I did not have a problem with it.
Read the Wiki it will help so mucn and there is also YouTube videos on it. When looking up the information look up Kaiser. I also used this web site for help.

thanks Biloxigirl! do you know if I can put a new version of windows mobile on the device? I've read that some people have updated to 6.1 but do not want to update to 6.5 because it lacks good support for landscape mode?
taz
It all depends what you want? You can flash any Kaiser ROM after Hard-SPL [Resources] Flashing Your First Kaiser Rom (For Noobs) , there are many 6.1 ROMs to choose from and even though M2D doesn't support landscape well it can be disabled via today settings, not sure what you mean about landscape support on 6.5 as Chome has full lanscape compatability.
Good luck

yup, look in the rom dev forum.
when reading these steps from the tutorial, am I suposed to pull out the battery while the device is still powered on or should I turn it off first?
1. Copy JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe, JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.exe and JumpSPL1.94-KAIS.exe to your device memory (NOT STORAGE CARD)
2. Pull out the battery and reinsert it (this step IS important) *DONT turn phone back on yet*

Questions about changing ROM

The first time is always the hardest.
Recently I've been playing with the registry to try and lower the 'lowest volume' setting for my headset with no success. Apparently I need to change the audiopara file. I'm thinking that changing the ROM may help. So here's a few questions:
1 - If I decide to go back I can download my original ROM from here (Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update)?
2 - Do you reckon Christians 6.5 ROM is pretty good? Do you recommend changing ROM?
3 - Does each ROM come with it's own registry etc or do they rely on stuff on the phone (does flashing the ROM remove everything?).
Thanks!
.... sorry can't post links. Feel free to recommend a good 6.5 ROM.

The first time is always the hardest.
Recently I've been playing with the registry to try and lower the 'lowest volume' setting for my headset with no success. Apparently I need to change the audiopara file. I'm thinking that changing the ROM may help. So here's a few questions:

1 yes
2 best find out for yourself; the earlier the better
3 yes and no; no, the rom is replaced and most probably rilphone.dll, but radio and spl are normally untouched
cheers
Hey guys. I just got my x1 back from repairs (they fixed the nasty crack for free XD) and wanted to know if I can Hardspl again. When I put the stockspl, the page said that dont bother using this if you are gonna put hardspl back. But I had to for warranty reasons.
Anyway...can i just flash hardspl again?
Thanks in advance

1 - Sweet.
2 - Changing the ROM takes a bit of effort just wanna be sure it's a good move.
3 - Okay - what is the radio and spl?
Cheers.
That Energy ROM looks pretty sweet. May go for that one.
Another Question;
The 'NEW ORIGINAL X1 and X2 ROMS update 3.2.2010' thread lists all the original ROMS (in my case Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update).
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475482
So could I restore my X1 to it's original ROM by downloading from the Link above?
Why would you choose to take the time to back-up your ROM if you can just download the original?

1. Yes.
2. Some people flash their phones 2-3 times a day, so it's good to have something to fall back onto where everything is setup the way you want to. That being said, I don't back up my ROM, I just do a clean install every time I reflash.

Cool, thx.
When you do a hard-reset, which I've done recently, that take your phone back to square one. So I guess what I'm trying to work out is if it's necessary to back-up the ROM. Basically I'm being lazy.
I've downloaded two ROMs to try - Christian's ROM and Firestone V6.1.
HELP:!!! my x1i phone not running
lastly , i 've installed a language supporting program , then i restart the x1i but it did not boot again , it just reach to sonyericsson logo and still there .... i've tried hard_spl and all of these stuffs one by one. but when it connect to the device -as i remember the third step- it shows the the current verion: -it does not show any thing here- and the next version , 1.00.x or something like this.
when i clicked the next button i show the progress bar on each of tow (pc and x1i) and then stay on 0% for about 3 min then it show the recovery wizard , some time it said that "lost connection" others nothing but recovery... x1i here still showing the progress bar as 0% , so i remove the battery or soft reset to go into the recovery wizard , then i shows successfull recovery ... but i don't see any respond on the x1i , it's the same status , no boot no ability to update or or ...
when i connect the x1 and go to boot loader(manually known buttons) the Win XP (mine on pc SP2) show new device and good install driver and successfull driver installion on the first time and then just shows the sound of plug in the device or plug out...;
sorry if i said too much here . just i want to make it shown to all.
thanks for all who will mention even "i 'll try to ask for you"
good to be here

I would advice on backing up your personal things: contacts, mail, messages, some settings if you want (like hw keybd layout...)
to back-up a rom is only useful if you change reg settings often and want to have a backup in case of system crash/failure
as you intend to change your rom once in a while a backup of one specific rom doesn't make sense you see? preserve your personal data, that does it
pim, sprite, spb, synch, myphone, ... there are many ways, read about them and decide for yourself
@truthglow did you try with your sd card taken out?

I've my person data sorted. All my contacts are stored in Windows Live - so all I need is the Windows Live app to retrieve my contacts.
I use online sync for my calendars - so no problem there. Don't care if I lose my SMS messages.
I've copied across any pictures.
I store all the .cabs for my favourite apps on my SD card.
I made some changes to the registry to try and adjust the headset volume but to no success.
So probably don't need to pack up my Rom.
I like the look of Spike's X1.5 ROM.

sounds reasonable so far
you can use apps to automatize (to a degree) the restoring of personal settings/apps/progs/data/...
e.g. with user customization (UC) or sashimi
that's especially useful when often flashing an update of the already installed rom, as menu structure and general reg layout is similar (expect for certain update)
that way you can easily get most of your customization done without major effort (except of course for the one time you need to config your uc tool), right after flashing, some roms even check for uc configuration during rom customization process
about the reg edit: did the adjustment not work or the export of the changed setting?
yes i did it

^ I edited the registry in an attempt to decrease the headset minimum volume (I found the minimum volume too loud for in call & listening to the radio).
I have since learnt that I need to change the audiopara file. But I don't have the expertise. So I'm hoping my new 6.5 ROM's headset volume is a little quieter .
