Galaxy Mini Recommended apps [I Guess no longer support here]

I guess, I won't support this thread anymore. Our device is not good anymore, and our SGM's can't use all new apps because of Arm v6 processor and only Adreno 200 GPU. But anyway, if you have any good ideas - write it here.
I hope, that this thread was useful for everyone. Maybe I'll back, but I guess, it will happen only when I will buy new phone, so I won't back coming soon. Thanks for everything.
Hi. I had very much problems with apps. I didn't know which is better and which are really usable. So I will try to help you with apps - this is list of the best (in my opinion) apps:
For all users
Everything for browsing:
Browsers:
1. Opera Mini: The fastest browser for Android, but it doesn't support flash, JavaScript and etc.
2. Skyfire: An alternative browser with flash support, but quite slow.
3. Opera Mobile: The fastest browser if you using Wi-Fi. Supports flash and JavaScript.
4. Dolphin Browser® HD: Quite fast browser, but slower than browsers from Opera. But this browser is very customizable, has very much Add-ons, themes and etc.
5. Dolphin Browser® Mini: Something between Opera Mini and Dolphin browser HD. This browser is slower than Opera Mini, but faster than Dolphin HD. Also it is more customizable than Opera Mini, but not as customizable as Dolphin HD.
Social:
1. Facebook: If you are using Facebook you must have it.
2. Tapatalk: For going to the forums like this.
3. Skype: I think you know what is it. It's just a mobile version...
4. Google+: App for Google+ users.
5. K-9 Mail: The best email client for Android.
6. TweetCaster for Twitter: The best Twitter app. Simple. Fast. Many features.
7. WhatsApp Messenger: With this app you can chat with your freinds for free (requires internet). Also there is a group chat.
Other apps for better browsing experience:
1. FeedR: A RSS reader that works as both an app and a widget.
2. 3G watchdog: This app shows your data usage. This app is the best, because it doesn't include Wi-Fi data and shows notification.
Customizing:
Launchers:
1. Go Launcher EX: I think it's the best Launcher. Many functions (I think the best is folders in app drawer, or hiding apps in app drawer), many themes. But it eats more RAM than other launchers.
2. Launcher Pro: This launcher is very fast, but not as customizable as Go Launcher. But if you want the best performance you shuold use this launcher.
Homescreen:
1. Fancy widgets: The best free app for widgets (like htc style clock and etc.).
2. Beatiful Widgets: The best of the best widgets app (But this app costs).
3. PicSpeed HD Wallpapers: This app has very much high quality wallpapers.
Multimedia:
Music:
1. MixZing Media Player: If you don't like stock music player or just need more functions like equalizer and etc.
2. doubleTwist Player: One of the best (or maybe the best ) music player for Android.
3. MX Video Player: Really good video player. Customizable, nice and fast. P.s. you must download Arm v6 codec to use this player.
4. SoundHound: If you are listening to radio or just music from somewhere and you don't know name of the song - just open this app and it will show song that you're listening name.
5. Shazam: Something like SoundHound, but it is better if you are listening rock, rap, pop and other non-electronic music.
6. TuneIn Radio: The best Internet radio app. If it works in Lithuania it must work everywhere .
Photos and videos:
1. Camera Zoom FX: Camera app which has very much effects and functions.
2. Vignette: One more camera app, which also has many effects and features.
3. PicSay - Photo Editor: I think it is the best photo editor for Android Phone.
4. QuickPic: This is video and photo gallery. It has more functions and it's faster than stock gallery.
5. VidTrim - Video Trimmer: With this app you can trim your videos.
6. SyncMyPix: A nice little photo syncing app for contacts; basically it imports your friends Facebook photo's into your contacts.
YouTube:
1. TubeMate YouTube Downloader: With this application you can downlaod videos from YouTube.
2. Listube: With this app you can play music from youtube in backround. For example: You can listen music from youtube while you're browsing. P.S. This app also playing video, but you can't watch video in fullscreen.
Reading:
1. Aldiko Book Reader: With this app you can read books and etc. This app supports .ePub files (with these files your reading will be much more comfortable)
2. IDEAL ePub Creator: With this app you can convert PDF, DOC, DOCX files to ePub.
3. Documents To Go: View, read and edit all .doc,. docx,. xls,. xlsx,. ppt,. pptx and other files.
SMS:
1. Go SMS Pro: Really good sms app, with many functions like password on sms, themes and etc.
2. SMS Backup & Restore: Simple application for backuping and restoring your sms.
3. SMS Popup: This app provides a convenient popup dialog when a message is received that allows you to quickly read and reply to messages.
4. SuperBackup: An EXCELLENT app for backing up your SMS and Contacts.
Privacy:
1. Safe notes: You can write notes with this app. Why it's safe? Because you can put password on your notes.
2. Hide it pro: You can hide videos and pictures with this app.
3. Call Blocker: Sometimes we need to block calls or SMS from someone. So, this app will help you to do it (It works not in all countries (countries list in this app description - in market))
4. Fake-Call Me: With this app you can make a fake call, so you can get out of awkward situations .
5. avast! Mobile Security: One of the best (or maybe the best) antivirus app for Android. Why? Because it has a lot of features, blocks many viruses and it is faster than others. There are many viruses for Android, so if you are downloading apps not only from Google Play - you should install this antivirus.
6. Perfect App Protector - FREE: App that will let you set password on other apps.
Files or apps managing and etc.:
1. Astro file manager: File manager alternative, but it's better.
2. Dropbox: certainly know what's the point of this application.
3. AntTek App Manager: The best application manager. Fast and simple .
4. App 2 SD (move app to SD): With this app you can move apps to SD.
5. Auto App Organizer free: This app will help you to organize you apps. Many features, nice and simple.
6. Google Drive: This is one of the best cloud services. With this app you can store all your files in one place, so you can access them from anywhere and share them with others. 5GB is free.
Entertainment:
1. Rage Reader: I think you know what is Trollface, Rage, forever alone or other memes. With this app you can find many comics with these memes. Comics gets updates every minute .
2. TrollCamera: One more funny app for memes lovers. Take foto and add any meme.
3. RoidRage Rage Maker: With this application you can make your own meme comics.
4. Places Directory: This is an awesome app for finding shops and etc. near your current location. From restaurants to theaters to medical facilities to taxis.
5. Relax and Sleep: App which will help you to relax or get some sleep.
6. Sky Map: A stunning app that renders Patrick Moore obsolete, by using your phone's orientation tools to give you an accurate representation of the stars and planets on your screen.
Education:
1. Google Translate: It's the same like as pc version Google Translate.
2. RealCalc Scientific Calculator: If stock calculator is too simple for you - you should download this app.
3. WolframAlpha: This app will help you with mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, astronomy and etc.
Notes:
1. ColorNote Notepad Notes: A very superb Note app which is very customizeable. Also you can back up your notes to SD card or online.
2. Out of Milk Shopping List: With this app you'll never forget to buy or do something.
3. Evernote/Hello Evernote: Sync your notes to/from your computer/phone's works in a similar vain to Dropbox to an extent. They've just released a new side app called "Hello Evernote" which is sort of like a Social Network integration of sorts.
4. GTasks: With this app you can do your notes, watch calendar and etc.
Shopping:
1. Official eBay Android App: Really good eBay app - fast and simple.
2. Amazon Mobile: Do you want to buy something from amazon? This will help you.
Others:
1. Live Scores: With this app you can watch livescores.
2. Quadrant, AnTuTu benchmark, NeoCore: With these 3 apps you can check your phone performance.
3. Swype keyboard: One of the best keyboard for android. Many functions, very fast and comfortable typing. You can find it in Swype.com
4. Rainwatch: App for watch weather via map.
5. Memory Booster: This app will free you some RAM.
6. Evernote: This app lets you stash and sync all your text notes, voice memos and files on your phone and access them through a desktop computer.
7. DroidCam Wireless Webcam: You don't have webcam on your pc? This will help you .
Only for users with root permissions
Memory, apps, files and etc.:
1. Titanium backup: If you installing another ROM you must have this app! It is for backuping and restorind apps and data. Also you can delete system apps, or move apps to SD.
2. Root Explorer: With this app you can get system apps and folders.
3. CacheMate: The original and the best cache cleaning app. It's available for $1 in the market. A demo is also available in the market.
4. SD-Booster: It speeds up your SD-Card.
5. ShootMe/PicMe or drocap2: The best apps for making screenshots of your phone screen. I don't know why, but for me working only drocap2.
6. SD Maid - with this app you can free some internal or external memory. Very useful.
Performance increasing, tweaking:
1. Android Terminal Emulator: This app allows you to access the UNIX terminal and execute commands.
2. Font Changer (root): the best app if you want to change your phone fonts.
3. FasterFix: This app will speed up your gps.
4. AnTuTu CPU Master: With this app you can overclock or underclock your phone processor (also you need a custom kernel).
5. Market Enabler: This app lets you access paid apps from countries where paid apps are not yet available.
6. LCDDensity for Root: With this app you can change your density. That means this can make you view bigger or smaller. P.S. This ap doesn't change your resolution.
7. Juice Defender: This app is saving your battery - for example it turns off internet when you don't need it and etc.
8. S2E (simple2ext): With this app you can move dalvik-cache, data, apps to the SD-EXT, it frees up very much internal memory. DANGER! Your phone SD Card must be partitioned and it must have CM7 ROM. Otherwhise it won't work and it can brick your phone. Also, remember that you can't move out your SD card when you moved something to SD-Ext, or your phone will get brick.
9. System Tuner: This app will help you to increase and watch your phone. Most of the features requires root.
10. Autostarts: This app can disable unwanted autostarts and speed up your phone.
11. [root] Chainfire3D: This app will decrease your graphics quality, but this will improve performance of games. How to use it? Just google .
Privacy:
1. PDroid Privacy Protection: with this app you can take control of access to your private data by the applications you install.
2. Orbot: Tor on Android: App that allows you to browse via proxy servers.
Ads, internet and etc.:
1. AdFree: If you don't like ads in games or apps - you must download it. It will block any ads from apps.
2. Wireless Tether for Root Users: Enables free tethering via WiFi and Bluetooth to allow you to get an internet connection for your PC or other device that allows ad hoc connection, using your SGM 3G connection.
3. DroidWall - Android Firewall: With this application you can disable internet in other applications.
Other root apps:
1. Webkey: with this app you can control your phone from pc browser.
2. Root checker: If you want to check your root permissions.
Games
Arcade & Action:
1. Fragger: This game is a grenade launching action adventure, where hundreds of tricky levels meet hundreds of exploding enemies. 370 levels and 12 worlds. Not bad, right?
2 Warmux: 2D Worms style (steps-based) game.Very much weapons, maps and characters.
3. Exhaust Thing: Starving smoke creatures are eating our atmosphere! The heat is rising! They destroy the earth! Help repel this hot global gourmandization!
4. Line Birds: Guide these birds through a world full of danger. Fun game: 5 Birds and every each birds has different abilities, various achievments and etc.
Classic:
1. Checkers Free (By AI Factory Limited): I think these checkers is the best, because it has 10 levels, multiplayer mode, stats and etc. Many settings and etc.
2. Glow hockey 2: Very good table hockey game, just try it.
3. Extreme Droid Jump: Something like doodle jump, but free. In this game you must jump as high as you can.
4. aTilt 3D Labyrinth: A tilt-based labyrinth game featuring realistic physics. Many levels, achievments and etc.
Race:
1. Turbo Fly 3D: Very good futuristic racing game with good graphics. P.S. To get more FPS turn off sound in settings of game.
2. Stick Stunt Biker: 2D graphics physic based bike game. Really good, one of the best selling game on iPhone.
Logical:
1. X Construction: Build a bridge to let the train safely cross the valley. P.S. Paid version has more levels and free build mode, so I think you should buy it.
2. Save My Telly: Action physics game where you build to protect a TV set from natural disasters, such as wind, rain, earthquake, meteors, grasshoppers, aliens and others.
3. Alchemy: Combine Fire, Water, Earth and Air and get more then 300 new elements. Simple, but fun game.
4. Unblock Me FREE: The game that defines “Unblock” puzzle games.
5. Constant C: This is an action puzzle game, based on gravity controls.
6. Amazeballs Free: This is a physics-based puzzle game where you rotate the world to move the ball under gravity and collect all the stars in the shortest time possible.
Cards, casino and etc.l:
1. Live Holdem Poker Pro: The best poker game online. If you don't know how to play poker click here
2. Slot City - Slot Machines: The best slot machines game for Android.
3. Solitaire: You hould know what is it. There is: Regular, Spider, Freecell and Forty Thieves modes.

1. PES 2012 Pro Evolution Soccer: The best football game for Android. For better performance turn off the sound.

Swype is the best (of best) keyboard available out there. With QWERTY layout and and swiping feature it lets you type any word within a seconds. It is best for fastest typing on smartphones....

Ya only recently started using Swype...will continue it for some time

u can post abt paid apps..but can't post Warez or links to pirated versions...if u can afford, I suggest you to buy and support the dev.
One day if u create something and if it's pirated..then u'll know.

Windows Phone 8 questions

Based on what I've seen today it still has no:
- system dictionary for definition lookup(only for predictive text). The Kindle App does nothing when I press & hold on a word, unlike on my iOS device.
- hi-speed media scrubber for music. you know the little round knob on the progress bar that allows you to move the time index to any point in a song or video.
- unified search aka Local Search(apps, music, videos, contacts, emails)

The music app is pretty bad. I had several attempts to build a proper one, but the developer can not interact with the music library, other than playing existing playlists or songs.
You can't make custom playlists(actually you can, but it very, very, VERY complicated and prone to error and simply does not worth the shot), change the order of music inside the list and stuff like that for a third party app, and that sucks.
There are no new APIs for XNA (which is used to access the songs in the phone) so there is no way of making one.
If there is something I can say it is not right on WP, that's the music app.

Does that imply that there´s the same limitation for video? ...and ...as a result of that a videoplayer with support for more codecs is very unlikely to ever happen?

The File-Assosciation feature in WP8 works like this. Your App can define certain file endings (e.g. .mkv) which it can handle. If those are found on a SD-Card or downloaded the according registered App is then started for those files. The App can then do whatever it is it does as long as it keeps to reading the file (the original can't be manipulated although the app could copy it into it's isolated storage and manipulate it their). But there is one Caveat - there are several file extensions that are reserved for the OS which means that 3rd party Apps can't register for them. One of them is .mp3. Avi is another one of those (you can look them up in MSDN).
.mkv on the other hand is an extension that Windows Phone itself does not know so people could build Apps that would be able to consume them. Given that we now have Native Code capabilities writing a decoder or recompiling one written for another platform is possible, though it remains to be seen wether anyone will put the effort into it.

ok. i was mainly into psp dev. before, and never had a winphone in my hands so far.
but if you say that´s possible, then i´ll go for the lumia920, reg. for a dev account and see what i can do

I haven't had the chance to look over what the native code can do and what it can't do, but it is to be expected that it will have limitations, just like C# has.

You can render images (obviously) and output them using Direct3D which is pretty much what e.g. VLC does on the Desktop. You have complete read access to files on the SD-Card for your registered filetypes. MKV could be registered, MP3 or AVI could not (because they are in use by the system already).
But of course you would not be able to offload processing to the dedicated decoding units like with the built-in Codecs, which will mean more processor utilization and worse battery life. Still as a programmer I don't see too many actual road blocks (but it's a bumpy road to do this to be sure).
@TarKin: before you drop the money perhaps it would be best to start looking into the SDK. I'm not an expert in Multimedia-programming by any measure so you might be able to spot problems in there beforehand.
If you're still going for a L920 with these uncertainties for your use-case: welcome to the family, I'm anxiously awaiting mine.

5.Scan Media-simply runs the phones media scanner which I was astonished that really the only way to do this (at least with my phone) was by unmounting and remounting the sd card you have to do this sometimes especially if u download something after you turn on your phone some applications won't find the media unless you do this

[Q] Things to know before beginning a music player app for WP8

First of all, hello to everybody. I have just joined xdaDevelopers.
To business now..
I recently bought my first Windows Phone (Nokia Lumia 520). One of the reasons for getting it was for developing my own WP8 apps.
I would like to start with a music player app - one that can play mp3 files from phone memory and SD card; arrange songs according to name, albums and artists; create playlists; have capabilties of fast foward and rewind (seeking); and recognise album arts.
What do I need to know before I can start building it?
I have zero experience in app development; I am a web designer.
I noticed that there are very few "polished" music players (which function properly as well as have a nice UI) in the WP store. Any particular reason for that (other than the platform being relatively new)?
I created this post mainly because the lack of quality music players appeared a bit strange to me. I have heard that a particular file type can be accessed by only one app (please correct me if I am wrong). So does it mean that one has to somehow uninstall the default music player in order to use the newly downloaded one?
For instance, I have "Adobe Reader" which can read PDFs from my MicroSD card. But the "PDF Reader" app (which I installed just yesterday) cannot even find them! So I had to uninstall the latter.
So I wanted to know if there was something about WP8 that doesn't allow such things - if these "security measures", which render apps like file managers less useful, are also responsible for the lack of music players in this otherwise very fantastic platform.
Please note that I come from Android, and am very new to Windows Phone platform. So kindly point out if there's something incorrect about my assumptions.

Welcome to Windows Phone. The Lumia 520 is a great choice in my humble opinion. In regards to why there are so few music apps, there are probably several reasons. One such is the fact, that the easiest way to make one is to integrate with the built-in music features, which however limits you in several ways, like not being able to add more file types, not being able to customize the experience too much, playlisting is limit as far as I know, which basically puts you in the position, that the only actual improvement you can do upon that is implementing a new streaming service. The other route is to implement your own music player, but then you're going to have issues making it work in the background (not to mention, that implementing a music player isn't entirely simple).

1. Make sure you have hardware for it. I recommend a minimum of Windows 8 Pro 64bit, but you can find instructions for Windows 7 on this forum as well. You'll need VT-x support on your CPU, plenty of RAM.
2. Download and install the WP8 SDK.
3. Once you open Visual Studio, you can start by creating a new project, you'll need a UI project (I recommend Windows Phone App or HTML5 App templates) and a music playback project (WP Audio Playback Agent -OR- WP Audio Streaming Agent).
4. For tutorials on how to get started I usually go to Pluralsight.com, because I have a subscription there, and they're plain awesome, but I'm sure there are a bunch of other sources as well, which are for free.

If you have both Adobe Reader and PDF Reader installed, once you tap on a PDF file (say after downloading one in IE) an option should appear for you to select which app you wanna open it with.

You can install and use as many audio/music apps you like, but obviously only one can have the background music feature used at one time. (You can only have one music playing in the background).
Also:
"Developers must pay an annual subscription fee of $99, (this, according to Todd Brix, the General Manager for Windows Phone Apps and Store team, is currently on an ongoing promotion at $19) to become an App Hub member and submit apps to the Windows Phone Store. There's no limit on the number of free submissions for paid apps. There's a limit of 100 free submissions for free apps; thereafter, there's a fee of $19.99 per submission for free apps." - Wikipedia

What I want to do is modify the UI and UX a bit. Some of the features can be as follows -
1. Introducing a scroll bar;
2. Option to get rid of the grouping system by name;
3. Control over the font size;
4. Allowing the currently playing song to continue if I select the song (currently it starts playing from the beginning);
5. Enabling the seeking feature (tapping the timeline of the song so as to play from that point of time);
6. Having a tile feature in the start screen with options to pause, change song, etc (number of options would depend upon the length of the song);
7. Showing the album art of the currently playing song in the tile;
8. Having an animated background in the app (just a wide photo which slowly slides from left to right).
Am I allowed to do the above?

You're welcome.
"Integrating with the built-in music features" doesn't mean you get to rewrite the UI/functionality of the current Music+Videos app. What it means is, you get to use the built-in classes for simplifying music playback in your new app. You'll still have to build up a new UI around your classes, you'll also have to write quite a few lines of code for the playback functionality (but obviously way less than if you tried to write your own music player from scratch).
Now sadly I cannot answer all of your questions with absolute certainty, because I haven't tried writing a music player yet, but I'll give them a shot.

1. Yes, since you'll have to make a new UI from scratch, and you'll have the ability to include any logic behind it you want.
2. Yes, the grouping can be avoided AFAIK.

5. Don't think so. Someone else with more knowledge will have to answer this to be sure, though.
6. If you mean a tile on the start screen, which, when tapped will play/stop/next/prev/whatever and STAY on the start screen? No. Tiles (sadly) always open a program (even if for only a millisecond). You can use this for deeplinking to favorite songs/playlists/streaming services though, which is cool.

By "deeplinking", do you mean pinning songs to the start screen by 'long pressing' on them?
I do hope that Microsoft introduces interactive tiles in some future update. Sort of start screen widgets.

Deeplinking is launching an app with a link toward a specific page with parameters. Imagine it as a URL to a specific page on a website. If your app and pages support it, you could tap on a tile (say on the start screen), which opens your app, and instantly navigates to a playlist, album, song, whatever you made that tile link to.
Pinning items to the start screen can be triggered by anything you want. You, the coder, decides how you're gonna allow the user to pin their songs/albums/playlists/artists/whatever.

There are a couple fo things the guys here forgot to tell you:
You can not read Mp3 files from SD card.
You can not read mp3 files from the user music folder.
You only have access to web resources or your app's isolated storage.
You basically have to engineer a way to get them to the app storage.

[APP][5.0+] Youtube Player for Android Auto - Pre app fieldwork

As I have mentioned it before I have started working on a YouTube Player for Android Auto, but since I'm not a big youtuber myself I will like to get some input from you guys on how this should app work.
My thought till now are:
1) When you are outside Android Auto, you will need to open the app, give permission to access your content and sync your playlists to the app.
2) When in Android Auto, the media player will contain entries for each PlayList and all the items of a playlist will be listed as subitems. This part will work as any other media app.
3) Video playback, this will be on the fifth tab, same menu structure, but it will also display video, of course only when the car is stopped, other than that video playback will be disabled.
4) Provide search for individual songs.
- Is there any other way you usually use Youtube beside created playlists, if yes please tell me so I can understand what should I build.
Sync before use - Why is it needed?
- To be able to use the YouTube API which gives me access to your playlist and content I need to create a developer API. The API is limited to 1.000.000 trade units per day, every query has it's own unit value (not necessarily 1) so if I don't sync the playlist and use a fetch as needed approach, I will risk to run out of trade units when the user base grows bigger.
Any comments suggestions are welcomed.

Local players do exist for audio, and it's easy to create an app for AA for them, but YouTube is more problematic, and yeah it's a bit against youtube policy because you shouldn't have sound without video, so officially that app will never be created (maybe with youtube red).
However this project did not receive too much attention so it's on a backburner at the moment, probably till end of November.

Ahh, Ok! You think in audio only YouTube player.
I hope someone will start to develop a Xposed module that "rewrites" the MainActivity of any selected App and add AA support on-the-fly! This will be more similar to MirrorLink (not supported in a lot of devices).

I want to say that clearly: I believe no apps should allow playing videos on the
car display while the car is in motion. Period.
I ask all here to not write such apps and not promote and talk about them here.
Instead of supporting those who create these apps just to satisfy popular demand of
doing a forbidden thing, please support those who actually care about creatively
and carefully designing the apps to be useful and which assertively, yet nicely
prevent being used in a stupid way.
